Darsh, for his part, knew what to do. He clung to Casia, looked up at Jane and then screwed up his eyes, big fat crocodile tears falling down his face. "Daddy!" He sniffled. "I can't find daddy!" He sniffled again and gave Jane a puppy-face. Casia might be savvy to it, but most grownups were not nearly as smart as you'd think they were. "He's lost. He's tall an' he's got brown hair an' glasses."

The thing that Casia had forgotten was that Jane had chosen to adopt a siren. Jane didn't choose anything unless she thought she could handle it, and the word-obsessed guardian was sharp. She looked at Casia, who was looking as innocently worried as sirenly possible, and then at Darsh, who was looking like one of the puppies up for adoption and nodded slowly. "Poor dear. Let's drop him off with a responsible adult."
Casia frowned. "We could just find his dad ourselves!" she argued.
Jane shook her head. "Oh no, we can't do that."
The siren looked perplexed. "Why not?" The guardian looked down at her sternly. "Because you're grounded for lying to me. I saw where you came out from. If he knows how to get into the back of the shelter and knows his way around it, he has to be familiar with it. Which means he belongs here. And you belong in your room, to think about being more convincing next time." Never mind the fact she had lied, the postal worker was more upset that the siren had not been more persuasive about it. What kind of siren tried to get out of something just by being cute?
Jane looked over at Darsh and quirked an eyebrow in the same way Casia had. Blue kid. Why was everyone she had seen Casia talk to but Vest Boy strange looking? "Am I right?" she asked him sternly.

Darsh scowled up at Jane. "I dunno where my dad is." It was still true. He didn't specifically know where Max was off working. "Casia was helping me look. She let me out of the puppy cage." He added. "Dad left me there all day." The little boy was pretty sure the jig was up, but Casia didn't look like she was about to cry. Which meant Darsh probably didn't need to start crying either.

Jane was not an experienced parent. She knew about it in theory, but her practical experience barely exceeded a month. Nevertheless, shutting children in puppy cages all day didn't sound responsible. But who was she to say anything? Part of her was concerned, but another part was insisting that it wasn't her child. She didn't have a right to question what men chose to do with their own puppy cages and children. "Well, if he left you there, he'll find you if you stick around." she said firmly. "Say goodbye, Casia."
Casia looked like she had something rather different to say, something directed at Jane, but she bit her tongue. "Looks like I've gotta boogie." she told him reluctantly. The shelter had been alarmingly full of sharp things and Blue Meanie coloured boys, but it had been kind of fun, and she was sure that going back home with Jane was not going to contain anything interesting or fun at all. "Easy, little man!" She waved to Darsh as Jane led her away.

Darsh waved back, musing that this had definitely been more interesting than this place usually was. Hoping he would see Casia again, the blue boy wandered back towards the puppy cages.
