Dhiren smiled and took the offered hand. "That's understandable. A lotta firelizards around here seem to thrive on shiny stuff." Shaking Rayale's hand with his smaller hand, Dhiren grinned in good humor. "I'm Dhiren. Nice tah meetcha Ray." A glance at the mini-dragon on his new comrade's shoulder. "I take it his name is Rikk?"

"Yeah thats the one." Rayale confirmed, relaxing slightly. He had a powerful grip to go with his broad frame, and his broader smile. "Nice to meet you Dhir. I'm from a fisherhold, I got searched....so here I am. Nice to come up for air though. What about you?"

Riordan eyed the other wares, knowing that the man had probably picked the most expensive piece to show off. The pieces were all pretty, that was for sure. When Conomor asked his thoughts, he stayed silent for a moment. Not that it mattered to the vendor, who kept talking even when it seemed that both boys were tuning him out.

"Hmm... not really anything like we were looking for..." He stated, giving the necklaces another look over. Before the trader could start showing them something else, he started off towards another stand.

Once away from the man, Riordan glanced over at his friend. "... That one was pretty though." He chuckled, knowing the merchant would've loved to have sold them that one... and for a pretty price too.

Conomor chuckled and gave a lopsided grin. "A very pretty price I'm sure." More than he could afford no doubt. "How about we try over there," he suggested as he spotted another stall displaying jewelry of various kinds. As he drew closer, he began to doubt there would be anything here either; it all looked like gold and silver, and there were a lot of precious stones in evidence. Far too rich for his blood, but still pretty to stop and take a look at. That was half the fun of gathers anyway, looking at things you had no intention of buying.

Ghilani hadn't really planned on going to the Ista Hold Gather, but when he found that the Weyr had become rather empty because of it, he figured why fight the tide. He still had plenty of marks to spend, and was in need of both new clothing and a few other things... like a new comb. Thankfully, he had finally managed to orient himself a little better at the Weyr, and being a fairly fit youngster... figured he'd just walk to the Gather. The day had started off well, and he hadn't heard any rumors of storms to come.

But halfway to the Hold, he was regretting his decision.

The walk was nice (once he got himself away from the ancient caldera that was Ista Weyr ) but the road dust was a force to be reckoned with. Twice he'd had to stop and seek out a water source just to clear the grit from his eyes, and his clothing (which, admittedly, was not his Gather best) had been transformed into a uniform sandy brown. There was a nice seabreeze, so despite being dusty he wasn't sweating a great deal, just a light sheen for the grit to cling too. Thankfully, only an hour or two had elapsed since leaving the Weyr, and the Hold was in sight. The Gather flags waving in the breeze did elicit a smile from the tired smith, as Gather flags always did.

After finally reaching the outskirts of the merchant area, Ghilani immediately sought out an area to clean himself up a little, and was pleased to note that said area wasn't far, and he could pick up a new set of clothes along the way. He wouldn't be picky this time around, just something semi neat and comfortable, and he wasn't disappointed when a nearby trader brought his attention to a tent full of rough-spun tunics and wherhide breeches. He ended up purchasing a dark wine red tunic and a well fitted pair of breeches for less then a mark, and on a hunch added a belt and matching carry satchel from another stall along the way just in case.

Cleaning himself up was easy enough, and he just stuffed his old clothes in the carry sack and headed out to explore the rest of the stalls suitably refreshed. His first order of business would be the tailor shops to place an order, and after that.. well... maybe something to eat?

Riordan chuckled, "Definitely." He followed Conomor to the next stall, frowning a bit at the display. This was obviously geared more towards the Lord and Lady Holders... those with more marks to spend than the average gather goer. But there were several pretty pieces, no doubt for a pretty price once again.

Conomor slowed his walk as they drew near to the stall but didn't both to come to a full halt. As they passed by, he shot a smile over at his companion. "All very shiny, all very pricey, mostly far too gaudy." Gold and sapphires just wasn't his mother's style; if he ever gave her anything of the kind she'd probably clout him and ask if he'd taken leave of his senses.

"You see any other hopeful ones?" Conomor asked as they walked on past food vendors, tanners, tailors and all manner of other stalls. Humm, that meatroll had been a while ago now; perhaps once he'd found a gift for his mother he could think about picking up something a bit more substantial to eat.

Locating the higher end tailor shops was easy enough, but Ghilani was not of the mind to spend more then necessary on clothing. He'd made do well enough with what he had, and could barter for, at the Weyr, and he certainly was no clothes horse! Yet the prospect of acquiring at least one or two nice tunics to wear when formality deemed it necessary was completely justified (in his mind anyway.) Setting aside the Hatching and the great feast that accompanied it, he could think of a few instances back with his old Master that would have warranted fancier clothing... which he didn't have at the time. So even if he didn't Impress, he'd have a use for his purchases later.

Yes, yes... and even he knew when enough was enough with the mental chatter. So maybe I do just want to look nice for once... fine, to the threads with reasoning.

With that thought firmly at the forefront of his thoughts, he ducked into the nearest tailor tent.

Riordan chuckled and nodded. "Not unless she wanted to pretend to be Lady Holder or something." He really couldn't see any of the weyrfolk wearing something from that stall. Too flashy. Most of the women in the Weyr seemed to be more... calm? Nah, not the word he was looking for, but it would work.

"Hmm..." He glanced around, looking for another stall. "No... but that fruit juice sounds really good..." He chuckled. "Perhaps in the next aisle over?"

Conomor glanced over at the fruit juice stand and nodded his agreement. "That does sound nice, but I'm not spending anything else until I find a present. I'd hate to be just a little bit short for something perfect." Fruit juice wasn't that expensive, and it was likely he could argue a price down by that amount if he needed to but you never knew; some traders could be very stubborn about their final price.

"I'll get myself some juice later though," he decided firmly as he set off for the next row over, "shopping is hot work; I'll definitely need something refreshing afterward."

There were some scenes that would never change. They were simply iconic of the human condition. In this case, the human condition was best described as ‘bored’. Cil sighed and looked vaguely at the clothing stalls before complaining to his current companion, “I’ve got enough clothes. I don’t need any more clothes. Really, I don’t.”

Most other Candidates looked forward to Gathers, reveling in the freedom of the celebration. Cilyme, however, merely felt homesick. Every Gather was inevitably compared to the ones held at his own Hold back home. The day off was nice, in some ways, but he actually liked working. It kept him busy. Without anything to do, he had no choice but to----gulp----socialize. And the gangly blonde man just wasn’t good at that. He was a bit older than most of the other Candidates and meeting them always reminded him of how little time he had left to Impress. The knot on his shoulder identified him as a hopeful Rider, although one with very few chances left.

Lytah, the green firelizard perched on Cil’s shoulder, chirped happily, not understanding a single word. But she liked to feel included anyway.

Cil’s companion, Elaeran, ignored it all. After all, she saw something shiny. “Ohhh! But look at this, Cil!” she said delightedly, grabbing his hand and practically hauling the poor man over to look at some clothes. “This is just your color!” The shirt she pointed at was blue. Actually, most of the shirts she had pointed out were blue, simply because she felt they would bring out Cil’s eyes. And she knew it was one of his favorite colors. They had known each other for a few years now, which explained exactly why she was so comfortable with hauling him around.

That and she probably would have hauled him around anyway, simply because he was so sharding amusing! Besides, he had Lytah and Elae had always been a sucker for small cute things. One day she hoped for a firelizard of her own, but it certainly wouldn’t happen here. The prices here were enough to make her gasp out loud, especially for the little dragons. She simply shrugged and moved on, happy to simply window shop.

((OOC: Please do not respond to this unless you've won a flitter egg in the in thread event. If you have won one, don't feel obligated to reply. This is just for those who want to RP out their purchase. <3))

The merchant considered his find extraordinarily lucky. He sold food- meatrolls, and sometimes fish. It had been while he was combing the shore for something pretty to decorate the borders of his stall with when he found the clutch. He couldn't tell if there had been any other eggs there, but he had made off with five mottled orbs that held inside them what he could only assume would be fire lizards.

Now he was at Ista Hold, prepared to sell his wares. He kept the five pots, filled with warm sand, behind him, one eye always on them as he sold his meat. What could he sell fire lizards egg for? He wasn't a very watchful man, and he didn't appreciate the true value of what he held. A half-mark each? That would probably be more than he would pull in for his substandard food for the entire Gather!

Without much further ado, the man began to call out "Flitter eggs! Get a flitter egg before they're all gone! A half-mark each!" That was a value anyone could afford, and had he been smarter, he would have known to ask for far, far more than what he called out desperately.

A... A half mark? Was he joking? Conomor shot his companion an apologetic grin, "Excuse me a moment," and scurried over to the stall, already reaching into his purse. As he approached the food stall he slowed slightly and regarded the man cautiously. Could he be genuine? It was certainly worth finding out. Much as he'd just promised himself he wouldn't spend anything until he found his mother's present, he couldn't pass this chance up. He'd always wanted a flit of his own.

"I'm interested," he said to the merchant with a nod as he showed his half mark. A firelizard. Yes.

Riordan was about to move on with his friend when Conomor decided to check out the firelizards one man was yelling about. The boy debated going to see about them himself, but he'd seen several people have problems with their flits misbehaving.

He took the moment to get some of the fruit juice, spending a moment to haggle the price down from what the man first asked. That was half of the fun of a Gather: haggling. Sipping at his cool juice, the Candidate gave a happy sigh.

He slowly made his way back to where Conomor was, standing back far enough to let the other boy haggle or whatnot on his own.

Glancing up to see the passing crowds again from practicing a bit of stitchwork, Kita hears his master begin speaking up to the newcomer into their tent.

"Ah greetings sir welcome! What can I do for a fine young man? My work is the best of Ista Weyr's finest clothing, I can assure you! Can i interest you in something with some intricate seaming, perhaps a nice shade of green to set off against your skin with gold threading."

His master was one for words, for sure. Kita watches with mild interest as the talk goes on, not really catching the intricacies of hawking their wares when it was right there for anyone to see themselves. Surely the people passing could make their own decisions of his master's skill against other tailors and compare it for their own opinion of quality?

Dhiren laughed a little at his new nickname and nodded in agreement at his friend's statement.

"I'm from a trader caravan, so i've pretty much been everywhere and anywhere." He smiled. "My parents were a little unsure when a Dragonrider plucked me from the wagon on Search but I think they eventually warmed up to the idea."

The walkarea started to get a bit congested, forcing the young boy to press against the stall to avoid getting knocked on his bum. "Hey, Let's walk while we talk. Better than getting shoved, neh?"
