But the thing is . . . the ideas aren't amazing. Meyer had a dream about a sparkly man in a forest with a girl. Then she wrote it all down. She admits she didn't do any research on vampires whatsoever. Robert Pattison in an interview agreed that the book seemed like some author writing down a cheap wet dream.

Bella is a mary-sue that has no personality outside of her boyfriend. She lives for him, which is sweet but also totally demeaning towards women. In the last book when she has the baby, Edward ******** RIPS IT OUT OF HER ABDOMEN. Literally, he bites her skin to take the baby out because it'd break her bones or something else. When they have sex he breaks like her ribs.

It's just ridiculous to me, that's all. Then again, I like my books to have adventure and a little love instead of love and a little adventure.

Neither of us have read the books yet, so until I get a copy I can't say much on the content; but I do like the few glimpses of the fandom that I've seen, since much like the HP fandom, the Twilight kids have started expanding on the original idea of a series to produce (in a couple of cases) creative and well-written fanfiction. And their girlish excitement is much like when you get a group of Harry Potter fans together -- the passion and the blatant refusal to admit any flaws in the book/movie give me deja vu.

I can't say much on whether it's demeaning to women as I regularly abuse female fiction characters through fanfiction to fulfill my own fantasies; Lavender Brown, for example, has been turned into a soulless whore doomed to be used, abused and left no matter what storyline I place her in, yet I write her as a pathetic being who will kiss the ground you walk on if you give her a second glance, who lives through her lovers because to her there is no life without one. I can see where it'd be considered disrespectful and rather sexist, but since my personal views on it differ from many, I can't object to it since everyone has a different line between acceptable and unacceptable, and everyone has the right to feel and believe what their emotions and moral standards dictate for them personally.

I think the issue of "Twilight vs Harry Potter" is more of a "what makes a book good" debate, rather than a debate between two pieces of literature and their fandoms. I was thinking on it earlier, and for me personally it comes down to on what do we judge fiction? The skill with which it's written, the manner in which the storyline is formed, the effort that is placed into its creation, its ability to affect its readers or appeal to a large audience..? Does a huge fanbase make Twilight a good book because its contents stir up passion in so many people, or is it a bad book because it is poorly written, researched, and executed as compared to others in its genre? Is the Harry Potter series good because of its fanbase and the creative world in which it is based, or is it bad because of Rowling's plot/writing inconsistencies and her choice to "steal" ideas from other places and reshape them for her own?

I dunno if there's really a final, acceptable answer to any of it simply because it's all based on opinion, even the appropriateness of its content. But I do enjoy hearing everyone's opinion on the matter. n_n

Shoulda put it better...

I meant it was amazing to them... Or at least that's what I hear from everyone that's a fan of it.

Eh, I don't know. I just thought it was sweet that they were all so excited about it like I was for Deathly Hallows.

I'm just a feminazi so I hate to see demeaned female figures in literature that's popular amongst teenage girls. u_u

My sister and my mom like it soooo . . . gonk My sister was even an anti-Twilighter until she read it, and kept trying to get me to read it, but I hate romance stuff. Sometimes even the stuff Darrell says makes me want to like, strangle something.

I just think there are so much better things out there, like all the stuff we're reading in British Literature class. BUT THIS ISN'T A BOOK THREAD, IT'S A MOVIE THREAD. SOOO YEAH. ;D

I, personally, loved the movie Coraline. Anyone else see it? I saw it twice.

(Psh, you are not a femnazi. I totally see where you're coming from. I'm just too perverted in my way of thinking to resist the abused!woman/abuser shiz.

Good point my friend! I'ma make a thread so I can gush about rereading The Great Gatsby.)

The trailers didn't quite sell me on it. I couldn't tell if it was completely creepy and if it was a Series of Unfortunate Events-styled plot where it was a horrible things happening with no real happy ending, or if it was a twisted and 'moral-of-the-story-is' plot like Nightmare Before Christmas.

(xD But I am a self-proclaimed feminazi, so yeah. <3)

I didn't see any trailers . . . I don't watch TV or anything. XP But I just saw some of the poster art, and plus, it's a freaking NEIL GAIMAN book/movie. And it's really freaking awesome, and it has a definite ending. It totally feels like a video game at times though (it would make a kickass one, at that).

OH GOD YOU CAN'T UNSEE IT. gonk

I'm reserving judgment of Twilight until I actually see the movie/read the books.

And ribs being crushed during sex makes me... makes me...

IT CAN'T BE UNSEEN!

crying crying crying

The only fic that has ever scarred me and makes me feel like sobbing inside.

Draco/Lucius

Lucius has a Drill. Draco is tied to a chair. IT INVOLVES SKULLS AND NON PG-13 things.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before. D:

Movies, movies, movies:

Um..... We just got rid of a bunch of ours. razz FOR MONEY.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory was on the other day! <3 (With Gene wilder)

Omfg. <3 That's my favourite movie ever, followed by Happy Feet. And then Milo and otis, and then Bambi. XD

I just love Charlie and the Chocolate factory so much, because they didn't have that cheesy drawn effects like a lot of old movies had. And it was so well done, that though it was done in 1977, it just seems to me to easily translate over into our time. Except for the clothes. xD But still.

I just love it. <3 The whole setting and how they did it and everything. *sigh*

Kat and I went with a friend to see Watchmen the other day.

I actually found it pretty engaging; the pacing and the dialogue kept the watcher drawn in during the entire movie, and superb special affects wowed me rather than annoyed me with poorly fashioned CGI. My only complaint was
[SPOILERS]

the ******** tiger-thing. They failed to give backstory beyond a vague mention, so when it appeared on screen I spent more time wondering what the ******** it was than I spent paying attention to the dramatic scene. And I felt nothing when it was murdered.
[/SPOILERS]
Other than that small irritation, I loved it. The humor was always witty and never bogged down the drama with too much verbal cheese. The characters each drew you in through different ways, and by the end you felt as though you knew them even though it had been a mere 3 hours. Not to mention how intense the scenes were -- the scene involving the search for that little girl... gut-wrenching.

I also saw Twilight. The special affects annoyed me in several places, but otherwise I liked it. I think the acting was choppy on purpose, perhaps, giving more of an "awkward teenager" feel to the scenes.

I'll probably go more into depth talking about both movies but right now I'm tired. XD

Y'mean Bubastis? They didn't really do much with him in the comic either, other then show him in a few of Dr. Manhattan's flashbacks, but then again it was more like, "Hey I'm Ozymandias and I'm a ******** genius so I'm going to genetically alter this lynx cause I'm just that cool."

My favorite part of the movie was the beginning, when they played the song The Times They Are A-changin', because that part was so well directed. heart Y'know . . . where they showed the changing of the Minutemen (like Mothman going insane and the others slowly dying off) and the start of the Watchmen.

That scene with the little girl made me angry because in the comics it's more hardcore. Instead of chopping his head with the axe, Rorshach handcuff's the guy's arm, throws him a saw, and sets the house on fire. He turns back and says, "You don't have enough time to cut through the handcuffs." Then walks out and watches the house burn. The other guy never comes out.

That's more hardcore.

Also, you remember when the newspaper seller guy and the black boy reading comics hug before
New York gets blown up and stuff
? That only meant a lot if you read the comics . . . because I was like "D: *HEARTBREAK*" Cause they didn't do that in the comicbooks.

I loved the movie. I know they had to dumb down the ending for regular audiences, but it wasn't that bad because it had the same general idea, I suppose.

OH AND YOU KNOW WHEN DR. MANHATTAN WAS
ON MARS DEBATING WITH SILK SPECTRE? Well when he finally got done arguing
and said that the universe was like "a watch without a watchmaker", that was an alliteration to a religious theory that argues the universe must have a God because, like a watch, the universe is so complicated that it must have been specifically made that way, just like how a watch has to be made into a watch--gears just wouldn't fall into place that way to make a watch without outside guidance. SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS COOL.

Oh and I was also a little irked that the guy at the end, the chubby boy who worked at the newspaper, that he wasn't redheaded. I mean would it have been THAT hard to find a guy for like 30 seconds of screentime who was redheaded? I liked him more as a redhead ;-;

I'm superexcited that on the DVD they're going to put in the scenes with the aformentioned black boy reading comics and the newspaper vendor. Those are like, major characters in the comic.

SORRY I LIKE WATCHMEN TOO MUCH.

Watched Twilight, really, really liked it. Lots of roleplaying possibilities with that one.

Saw Watchmen, it was cool because we got to sit in the very back and have the place pretty much to ourselves.

I kinda fell asleep towards the middle, though. I snarled at Jess to shut up when she asked me what the deal was with Mr. Lynxorz, because I was disoriented and there was a bunny-eared tiger on the screen. Took me a minute to even remember the ******** name. Xp

I was actually really miserable with the movie at first, but I slept on it and it settled a little better.

I like the graphic novel as much as the next rabid comic book fan, but I guess I just wasn't in the mood for that sort of movie.

Kudos to the Comedian's parts.

And finally getting to see Manhattan blow people up, that looked amazing.

Other than that, though... It doesn't spark any sort of excitement or muse out of me like most movies do.

I think Watchmen is just one of those things were I take it down from the book shelf from time to time, give it a flip through then move along with a slight smile on my face at how well-crafted the story is.

ALRIGHT< ALRIGHT.

I admit it. I..... liked Twilight the movie.

The only thing I didn't like, was that Bella was always so... mopey all the time. God. I just wanted to tell her to 'Shut up and get over it whatever it is you're emoing about' :B SMILE!!!

Okay, that baseball game? The most epic freaking baseball game ever.

And I kinda like Meyer's portrayal of vampires, taht they're really like the uber predator........... and the sparkling didn't look as weird as I thought it would. Makes sense, from her point of view.

Aaah... and it wasn't like everyone liked her right away. IT's a small town, maybe 120 kids in the graduating class. Seems Bella got lucky to make it in with one guy, who seemed to know everyone, and then the one guy liked her, but then she got in their group and yeah.

Still, I think she was rather too mopey, and really without reason.

rolleyes And I still don't think I'll like the books. Hahaha, but I liked it when the James dude like, broke her leg. twisted Hahaha sadism. And Edward, I see why he was all weird and hesitant, and I sort of get why he'd be so uber attracted to bella (One, she's a veggie-eater, so she might smell more like animal-prey, and two, he's got this mind reading ability which apparently they al don't have, so if there' sa person out there whose mind h can't read, it'd be rather obvious there'd be something about that person )) ((Lawl, I'd be hypocritical slightly anyways, what with Godfrey/Voldemort))

But I did like the movie, yeah. I liked that part where Edward came to meet her dad, and he's got the freaking shotgun. XD

I loved Edwards family, and I loved Bella's Dad. <3 Loved, loved, loved the Dad! And Alice is soooooooooo adorable!!! <3 Good god, I wanted to hug her.

And I repeat: The baseball game was freakin' epic. xD
