Seeing that there was no apparent way to get through to either stallion verbally and noting the increasing distress of the gentle mare she had tried to soothe, Gardenia came up with a bold plan. "Well either this stops them or I'm getting seriously injured..." she thought to herself. Taking a deep breathe she hurtled between the two dueling stallions, reared up on her hind legs and yelled as loud as she could "Stop this ridiculous fight this instant! Can't you see how you're upsetting that poor mare!" Now she could only hope by coming between the males, she'd end this foolish battle.

((I think it was supposed to be large cut. XD))
"Protrect me?" she asked, looking rather blank. "That doesn't make any sense at all. I think this is stup- NO!" she shouted, absolutely terrified as she saw the slender, much more fragile body work it's way between the two males who were about to collide again.
61/100
Silvanus took this latest blow without flinching, too deeply embedded in his memories and his rage to register pain. "I'll show you!" he snorted, more than a hint of madness in his eyes. "I'll teach you why it isn't wise to mess with your leader, Thelan!" He reared back, ready to deliver a blow to Alu's head, when a smaller body was suddenly before him, and a mare was yelling some nonsense. For a moment, it seemed he wouldn't be able to stop himself in time, and Gardenia would bear the brunt of his wrath, but at the last second, he turned aside, wincing as the movement pulled a muscle, and thumped back the the ground. "Are you out of your MIND, female?! I could have killed you, or the young buck could have!" he yelled, incessed.

The spell was broken. As the new mare threw herself between Alucard and his adversary, all desire to battle vanished, and he scrambled to avoid colliding with her.
Bewildered, he looked around: at the stallion he had been fighting, the new mares that had come out of nowhere... and finally, Khalidia. His earliest and best friend was upset, shocked, worried.
As he took in his surroundings, a deep sense of shame struck him. A battle over berry bushes? Was that really worth making Khalidia so uncomfortable, and almost killing another mare?
He couldn't face either of them right now, or even the pretty blue mare with the glowing horn, so instead he addressed the other stallion roughly.
"My name is Alucard, and I answer to no leader. Who in the nine hells is Thelan?"

Natsuhi took in a sharp intake of breath when the bright mare suddenly darted in between the two. Thankfully everything turned out alright, but that move could have potentially gotten her killed. The navy mare shook her head lightly, not really understanding much of the situation at all. What foolishness, all of it. Although inclined to walk away and leave the group be, she decided that she would at least stick around long enough to get an explanation for all of this. After all, the green and brown stallion's words hadn't really seemed to make much sense.

"It was either throw myself between you two idiots or let you two continue to fight over a blasted berry bush. Didn't you even notice how much you'd upset someone or how much attention you were gaining?!" Gardenia's tail lashed angrily behind her as her ears pinned themselves to her head. "Goddess knows there aren't enough problems without us fighting each other for food!" She spat angrily as she tried to glare at both stallions at once. With a snort of displeasure, she dropped back down to the ground and trotted over to the older stallion. Lowering herself to where he could hear her, but the others couldn't. "Are you alright?" she asked him in a gentler tone than when she first spoke to them.

Hmm... maybe Natsu was right. Maybe it had more to do with things beyond berries that she'd thought. The younger blue mare shook her head, then gently bumped her shoulder against the glowing mare's. "I guess it's safe to go over now." she murmured softly then trotted to join Gardenia. Of course, her attention went to her friend, not the crazy stallion who'd started the whole mess.
"Alu... are you..." the question trailed off before she finished it, her eyes going wide as she saw his cut up close. She shivered, not enjoying the sight of blood - especially his, then took a step closer to him, then another. Soon, her neck rubbed along his as she moved to stand chest-to-chest with him, her head propped on his neck.
"Am I..." he bit back the rest of his answer, staring at her now as if he really believed she'd lost her mind. "I'm fine thank you. And if this young idiot had left the territory I claimed as my own, this wouldn't have happened." he snapped. Honestly... did this silly female really think he'd be fighting over berries? He glanced over at Alucard, and saw him with Khalidia, his hurt pride flashing in his eyes. Again, a younger stallion had shown him up in front of a crowd of mares.
He was too old for this, he realized, a defeated stoop in his shoulders as he turned to leave, squeezing his eyes shut. "The territory is yours, young buck." he muttered bitterly, not sure the other male would even hear him.

Alucard didn't actually feel so good... but it wasn't safe to show it yet. He was annoyed that Silvanus had ignored his question and misunderstood him. Time to speak up.
"You don't understand. I have no interest in claiming territory as my own. The forest is big enough for the two of us, and more besides. But the idea that you would waltz into this clearing and tell everyone else they can't eat here irks me.
Khalidia and I have come here since we were foals; as far as I know it's her favourite berry patch. For that, I'm willing to fight for her right to feed here, and my right to accompany her whenever she wants me to.
Stay if you want. Just quit telling others what they can or can't do."
A stallion who had grown up in isolation without a herd was wonderfully naive - Alu didn't realise he had just told Silvanus two things that didn't really fit together. Again, he wasn't thinking straight. He was tired, and a hunt was waiting.
"I'll be alright... once I've had a chance to eat," he said to Khalidia, softly. "Wait for me here."
With that, he vanished back into the forest again, choosing the darkest spots so his pale coat wouldn't startle his prey.

Gardenia looked hurt and backed away from the injured stallion. With a sad edge to her voice she said, "Forgive me. I was just trying to make up for causing you to get injured further..." She bowed her head in apology and slowly moved away from him.

Even with the battle done and over with, Natsuhi held her place and merely observed the transactions in silence. Only after Alucard had gone off in search of food did the glowing female make her way over to Khalidia's side. "You must be relieved," she said with a faint smile. "I believe things turned out rather well with all things considered."

"Oh for -" Silvanus frowned and shook himself, then took a slightly more firm and proud stance. "Forgive me. I allowed my temper to get the better of me." he told the mare gravely, watching as the young buck walked away before turning his attention fully to Gardenia. "You cannot 'make up for it' in any way but by promising to never put yourself between two fighting stallions ever again. You're smaller and more delicate. You could have been seriously injured." he told her, sounding genuinely concerned for her health. "Mares should never involve themselves in such matters."
"Yes. I guess you're right, Natsu." Khalidia whispered softly, eyes still gazing at the spot where Alu had vanished, a longing quality in them. She was right... he had been planning on leaving her all along. "At least I have a ghost to keep me company." she murmured wryly, mostly to herself, giving a bitter chuckle. She wanted to fuss and fawn over her friend, and reassure herself that he really was okay. Instead, she was left to wonder where he was going, and if he was getting himself into yet more trouble...

Natsuhi's ears flicked at the ghost comment, but she didn't remark upon it; she was watching the mare closely instead. "Is something the matter?" she asked softly, not quite sure why the female seemed so sad. Shouldn't she be happy now that her friend was safe? Then again, Natsuhi wasn't exactly very experienced with any relationships herself, so she wouldn't know. For now she'd just try to encourage her latest acquaintance. "Alu will be back soon."

She looked to the other mare, heart in her eyes, and shook her head. "I know that, but... but..." she paused, then hung her head sorrowfully, pawing at the ground. "He's hurt." she whispered. "He's hurt and off on his own, and I don't like it. I... Natsu, I'll be back." she told the other, then turned and took off after her best friend, unable to bear simply waiting for him.

Gardenia gave a soft sigh and checked the stallion over anyway. "I wouldn't have had two if you two stallions weren't being so... so...male," she reproached gently as she looked him over. Satisfied with the fact that no injury was fatal, she set about tending to what wounds she could. Everything she did was confident and sure, but still had that warmth and gentleness that was soothing. "Stallions...always fighting over food." She shakes her head and clicks her tongue, "I hope these injuries were worth it. You could've been killed." She continued to chide him about and to herself (not realizing she was speaking her thoughts aloud) she added, "Which would've been a real shame."

Silvanus was very startled when she started to tend to his wounds - he'd anticipated simply slinking off into the night to care for them himself, alone and ashamed. "Mares... always thinking it has to do with food." he retorted, snorting with a kind of watered down contempt. He knew damned well that while the berries may have been the catalyst, they weren't the real cause of the fight. But maybe... it was better that the females think they were. They couldn't possibly comprehend the real reasons anyway.
"Yes. A terrible shame." he muttered bitterly, glaring sullenly after Khalidia, not seeming to realize that Gardenia might have actually meant it. "The world would be better without me. I'm an old stallion who can't even teach a young buck a lesson or two about the way things are supposed to work. I ought to go curl up in a peaceful corner of the wood and let myself fade away."

She stomped her foot with a soft snort, "Don't you dare! You're a fine stallion any mare would be proud to have as a mate! Besides, just because you're older doesn't mean you're useless." She shook her head again and gently nuzzled Silvanus when she finished tending to him. "Goddess knows we need more stallions like you in this world. If the fight wasn't about food, then what was it? It couldn't have been the other mare could it? Was she your mate?"
