Foggy winced at the smell of blood in the cave. He tried to breath deeply the scents of cedar and willowbark, but it was no use. We'll have to change the bedding later... he thought. He stepped cautiously in the cave, expecting the worst from the scent, setting the willowbark down near the entrance. Instead, he was relieved to find that his mate seemed to be all right. Then he saw the eggs. He had thought somehow they'd be bigger than that. They seem too small to put her through all that pain...
Small but worth it. "They're beautiful, Aine," he whispered. "They're so beautiful..." He wrapped his tail around Aine and nuzzled his family gently. "I went off to find some willowbark for the pain," he added bashfully. "Looks like I got here too late to do any good...not that it would have helped anyway, it probably has to be boiled." Foggy fell silent again for a long while, staring at his radiant family. "I love you," he murmured at last. He tilted up his head to lick Aine's ear gently. "Are you hungry? You must be hungry..."

Aine nodded absently. "I love you too, Foggy." she said tiredly. "Yes...yes I could eat..." she said shifting slightly with a wince to curl tighter around her precious eggs. "They are wonderful aren't they." she said touching each with her nose. "Two though...." she said drowsily. "We...we only had one before..." she murmured laying her head back down. "Doesn't matter though.....love them both...." she closed her eyes for a few moments before opening them slowly remembering everything he'd said to her.
She smiled absently and laughed a bit stopping as she felt a small stab of pain. "Thought that counts...." she said. "Maybe....maybe if I chew it...." she yawned and shook her head. "Sorry....." she said her eyelids drooping again. "Tired.....thoughts all over....place...." she finished before dropping into sleep. Her body still curled tightly around the eggs.

Foggy smiled gently and nuzzled Aine as she fell asleep. Yes, two of you, he thought, lowering his muzzle to nose his children gently. The tan one will be Cathair, of course. It seems like a fitting name...it must have been his name in another life, my other life with Aine... The day had dawned outside, and he turned to look at the lit world outside with a smile. It was a brighter dawn than he could remember in this life. He was a father again. Funny...it still seemed like a big deal... I wonder how long this wonderment will last at fatherhood, he thought wryly.
He turned back to the cave, mentally ordering his thoughts. He decided to change the bedding first. Aine was so tired she would probably sleep for a while, and he wasn't hungry himself yet. He lowered his head, trying not to think of where the blood had come from as he dragged it out of the cave. It smelled...different from normal blood, and he tried to hold the branches off the ground. He buried them far away from the cave so that no predators would track them down in their weakness. He gathered up more branches and replaced them in the cave before returning to the forest for a hunt.

Aine slept for a good part of the day and only awoke when her stomach complained loudly to her that it was time to eat NOW! She moaned and slowly opened her eyes looking around the cave. She licked her lips and winced as she realized her mouth still tasted of sap. She wanted a drink badly but shook violently at the thought of leaving her eggs even for a moment. "Oh..." she shivered and pulled them close to her taking comfort in the feel of them close to her. She touched each one gently and purred soothingly to them although in truth it was more to soothe herself.
"There there...Momma's here. Momma loves you...she won't leave you, she promises." she cooed. "Oh, my little ones...my precious little ones..." she said before turning slightly to look at the door. "Oh, Foggy...where are you?" she asked out loud.

Foggy dragged the deer to the cave, exhausted. It had taken some work, but he had managed to bring a stag down all by himself. Amazing how much work it required...He had had to flush the prey out himself and chase it. The chasing wasn't the hard part, but separating one individual from the rest had been a challenge. He dragged the deer up to the mouth of the cave, swinging his tail at a pair of cheeky crows. "Gerroff, my freshkill! My kill, you hear me?! My kill! Stupid freaking birds!" Once he was sure they would not bother him again, he peered into the cave.
He smiled at Aine's words. "I'm right here, my love," he murmured. He padded in and nuzzled her. "I'm glad to see you're awake. I brought down a deer. That was quite a hassle--shall I bring it in here, or would you like to eat it outside?" He still remembered Aine's complaints a week before about bringing prey into the cave with a shudder. He wasn't sure if her mood swings were over, or even if her insistences on eating outside were normal or just caused by the pregnancy.

Aine nuzzled him back and rested her head against him. "You didn't have to do that." she said. "I know how hard that must have been." she said still somewhat tired. Aine bit her lip and considered. She really didn't want the deer in the cave, but she was also exhausted and the thought of being away from her eggs rendered her absolutely senseless. "In here...for now..." she said. "I'm still so tired..." she said. "But I'm thirsty too....but...but...I can't leave them Foggy....I know I need to drink...but I just can't leave them!" she said somewhat pitifully looking up at him.
"What do I do?" she asked quietly hoping he'd have an answer.

"It was no bother," he replied cheerfully. "After all you've been through today and this week, I thought it was the very least I could do to catch you some tasty food. Besides, you'll need the nourishment after giving birth." Once more he nosed their beautiful eggs. If such loveliness and wonder could be created by a dragon, it surely could only be created by his amazing Aine.
With a grunt, Foggy dragged the deer into the cave, pushing back the branches so that he wouldn't have to change them again. "I'll find some moss," he promised her. "Then I'll fill it with water. It's an old technique, though a little slow. It's a pity this cave doesn't have a spring in it, that would make it all the more perfect..." He got up with a grunt. "I'll be back soon," he promised. He left the cave once more to hunt through the forest for some moss. It would be slow going--he couldn't carry much in it--but it would be something. It's the least I can do. I couldn't share her pain, I can help her now that it's over.

Aine nodded. "You deserve so much more for putting up with me." she said. "I know I wasn't the easiest dragon to live with...I'm sorry...so sorry..." she said. She then went silent as she watched him drag the deer inside. She nodded as he offered to get her something to drink even if it would be slow going. "Thank you, Love." she said.
She watched him leave again before hesitantly uncurling herself from around her eggs and hobbled over to the deer. She waited only a minute before tearing into it ravenously but stopped only to separate out a few choice bits for her mate. It wasn't much but it was her way of reminding him how much she loved him.
Once full she limped back to her previous position and curled back around her eggs licking her muzzle of blood and waited for Foggy to return.

It didn't take Foggy long to return with the wet moss. He set it down next to her, careful not to waste the water. He gently nuzzled her and licked her muzzle. "I love you, Aine," he murmured. "I love you and our eggs." He nuzzled them gently, feeling a pressure build in his chest. A strong desire seemed to seep through his brain, trickling down his face and down his veins to his heart. A desire to live. A desire to breathe. A desire to eat, drink, see, hear, smell. A desire to be, to be outside the confines of...something...His breath hitched. Where was he? A cave, or an egg, confined and trapped?
Something seemed to pass out of him and curl into the eggs, like a cat turning in circles to make itself comfortable. "Aine," he gasped. "Aine, help!" He closed his eyes, starting to feel dizzy. What's happening to me? "Aine!!"((For reference, see here. Man, I'd forgotten how long ago that was and how much had changed...xD))

Aine smiled when her mate returned and nuzzled him happily before carefully sucking at the moss, and while it didn't completely sate her thirst it did take the edge off of it. She then looked back up at Foggy and smiled at him. "I love you too, Foggy. Always." she said.
She then shivered as the same sudden impulses rushed through her already fatigued body. She trembled and moaned softly, closing her eyes tight. At the call of her mate she opened them but groaned as her vision doubled. "Fog...gy....!" she moaned. She wanted to go to him but was unsure which was the right one so she closed her eyes tight again curling tightly around her eggs. She gasped as like her mate something left her and settled into the eggs. She whimpered and shook. "Foggy! Foggy, what's happening!?" she cried. "Foggy where are you!!!?" she cried out desperately for him as if he was far away from her instead of just a few steps away. "Foggy!"

Foggy felt the pressure ease on him as Aine began to call out in distress. He could do more than moan as he felt his ribcage contract. Stop...please...whatever is making this happen, stop... He squeezed his eyes shut, rocking back and forth with the strain. Then, all at once, once he thought it had gone on forever, it stopped. The pressure eased in his chest and he dared to open his eyes, gasping for breath. He was in the cave, with plenty of space around him. Aine, his lovely mate, was distressed. He reached over quickly to nuzzle her, his paw reaching forward to maintain balance.
As he reached over with his paw, he brushed it across the top of one of the eggs. Great StarClan! It's warm! Foggy gasped and looked down at the eggs. His eyes were wide. "Aine..." he whispered. "The eggs...they're...warm...I think...I..."

Aine gasped as the pressure began to ease off. "Oooh...." she moaned closing her eyes tight. She tilted her head up and nuzzled her mate hungry for his comfort and attention. It was at his surprised whisper that she noticed the two sources of heat that were laying next to her. "They are...but...how...why....? Foggy..." she looked up at him eyes full of confusion. "What's going on?" she asked. "What just happened?"
She trembled and laid her head down. "Foggy I don't feel well at all..." she moaned. "Nothing from before is helping me at all...." she said with a sniffle.

Foggy shrugged. "Dunno...I've never had eggs before...maybe...maybe they're ready to hatch now? Or something?" He nosed the eggs gently before turning to his mate, concerned. "Aine?" he said softly. "Maybe...maybe you should get some water from the stream...move around a little...I can protect the eggs...I can keep them safe, warm if they need any more warmth..."
He settled next to Aine, curling his tail around hers and resting his chin on her shoulder. Aine needed him--they hadn't been together since early this morning. Foolish of him to leave her for this long...she would need some comfort, some reaffirmation of their love, and not just through words. Time to snuggle, I think, he said to himself.

Aine nodded. "You're right...I should get up..." she said. She sighed drowsily as he settled next to her taking comfort in his warmth and presence. She basked in his warmth for another moment before slowly getting up. She stretched out and then turned to him and nuzzled him. "You should eat. I'll be back by the time you finish more than likely." she said. She licked his muzzle before slowly limping out of the cave and down to the stream.
She paused for a moment outside the cave and took a deep breath of fresh air. The world seemed different now for some reason she couldn't put her paw on, but it made her smile all the same. She stretched again and slowly made her way to the stream pausing for a moment before slipping into it and savoring the water lapping over her. She purred and then got out drying herself off and then drank deeply before returning to the cave. She slipped in feeling better than before and a bit more like her old self. She smiled brightly before calling to her mate. "Foggy?"

Foggy nodded and basked in her warmth. It was good to be near her again; he had been in again, out again ever since early this morning, and although he could never claim to be as tired as she was, he was certainly not as awake and alert as he could be. "I'll eat," he murmured, nuzzling her back. "Don't worry about me." Foggy smiled as he watched her leave through half-lidded eyes and got up with a groan, stepping around to the other side of the deer to eat. Aine had left him his favorite morsels; very kind of her, he felt, when she deserved to have them as well. Much more than me. I did a few chores and took care of her. She suffered pain and exhaustion, not to mention mood swings all week. She needs a rest. She needs a break.
Finished with his meal, Foggy looked over at their eggs and smiled. "I wonder when you two will hatch?" he asked drowsily. He picked up the discarded piece of moss, depositing it outside before returning to curl up around the eggs in the cave. He fell into a light doze almost instantly, waking up when his mate returned. His eyes opened. "Hello, Aine," he murmured as he lifted his head. He thumped his tail against the ground and smiled. "Lay down. You must still be tired."
