When she left him, Lachtna stared after her, fighting back the urge to shout. He didn't care how old she thought she was, to him she still seemed so small, and he only wanted to look after her... why did he she have to make it so hard?!

Deep down, he knew he wasn't any better - he should have taken her away from the ocean, which he knew she didn't really like, and gone back to the meadow. He could have taught her better there. But... his eyes swung out to the pounding waves, and he sighed. Something about the water called to him, even if he did still fear it slightly. There was a smudge on the horizon he wanted to investigate - he was waiting only until she was strong enough to make the trip. He liked fish, and the smell of salt, and the feel of the sand beneath his hooves... and he suddenly realized that he was very selfish. Maybe... maybe he couldn't have all that and have Embri too.

Head hanging, he turned and plodded over to where she'd made her nest, and plopped to the ground, careful not to touch. She was still angry, after all. "I'm sorry." he told her softly, the words hurting his pride deeply. "I said I'd help you, and teach you... and instead I kept you here and worried about what I could learn. I'll... I'll be better, I promise. I'll take you to the meadow, where the herd I belonged to once left me. It's safe there, and it's a good place for a filly to learn all about being a Kirin. There might even be others who can help." Please, please let that be enough to make her stay, some part of him thought.

He didn't want to be all alone again.

Embri lay very still, fighting to keep her temper under wraps, since she knew all of today's disasters were equally her fault. His comments only provoked her, though, and she turns and snaps her teeth at him. "Teach me? Teach ME! Does it not occcur to you that you can NOT teach me what I need to know? I was born for the skies, I know that's where I'm meant to be, but I can't even manage a respectable glide, shard it all!" The filly shakes her head, rising, tears in the corners of her eyes. "Can't you see? " Embri stands in front of him, siloetted by the moonlight reflecting off the water, wings spread, before turning and running down to the beach.

Run, run, you're always running.... A little voice in the back of her head nags at the half-grown foal. Shut up, I don't care, I *will* fly! She pounds down the sandy beach, now cool under her hooves, shaking dried salt from her pinions along the way to the head of the bluff, pale cream coat shining under the gloom of twilight.

It was a slap in the face for the almost-stallion; he'd hardly ever considered her wings, didn't ever think to realize how different they made her from him. All he knew was that when she was around, he wasn't alone, and that he'd told that strange glowing Kirin that he'd teach Embri. He was trying... and he was botching it up. "Embri, no!" he shouted when he realized where she was headed, what her plan must be. Images raced through his mind of birds... she was like a bird whose feathers hadn't all grown in yet. She couldn't fly yet - she'd said as much herself - and she wasn't strong enough to swim through the current yet if she went off the cliff.

"EMBRI!" he called again, his voice echoing along the beach, carried farther by the water that surrounded them.

Sand sprayed behind Embri's hooves as she pounded up the moonlit beach, delicate but well muscled legs and a fierce determination giving her strength. A low rumble in the distance made her falter for a moment, but the storm was far off from the coast. Salty cold wind whipped against her face, pulling at the ruffled downy feathers above her newer pinions.

Headwind. Good.
Not usually this strong in the mornings ...
stop thinking, just go!

The filly's ears flick backwards, hearing the sound of Lachctna's alarmed call, but her legs keep moving, racing along the bluff towards the rocky cliff above swirling black ocean. All other sounds were lost in the rushing wind and thunderous crash of the sea against the rocks, pounding away. With a snap she unfurls her creamy feathered wings, bleached gray-white in the light of the moon. Three strides, two strides, one last leap and she was free of the land, neck arched forward into the upswelling currents of air riding out ahead of the ocean storm. Her heart leaped along with her legs, embracing the wind that carried her upwards like an autumn leaf.

Free! Free in the sky, the whole shore laid out below in silver beauty and soft shadow. The storm rumbled in seeming disapproval and Embri laughed, beating her wings and riding the thermal ever higher. Everything looked so small. She had never been so far up before, a small tendril of doubt worms its way through her mind.

It's fine... I'm fine, I'm free! I can glide back down anytime I want to.

A louder rumble filled her ears, closer this time, and a fat raindrop splattered across the filly's nose. The sea storm was growing, sweeping towards the land with alarming speed.

By now Helki could hear some voices carried to her on the wind that had picked up near the beach. Though it seemed more along the lines of shouting and she picked up some negative undertones of the yelling. One of the voices sounded like Embri's so Helki pressed on up the coastline hoping that she heard right only to see a light colored creature race up the beach and off the cliff.

Helki had stopped her progress to watch in shock and soon realizing that it was indeed the little filly Embri. A storm was coming in, rain drop spattered against her body and ran off her waterproof feathers. Helki paid no mind to the rain but she did pay mind to Embri in the sky. A storm wasn't the place to learn to fly especially for one so young.

She snorted and stamped a foot. This wasn't the time to be a bystander. Helki suddenly took off towards the cliff in the path Embri took. She paid no mind to Lachtna as she ran by him, the wind whipping through her mane. As she bore closer to the cliff Helki righted her tail out behind her and opened all her wings. She feet picked up the pace as she galloped towards the cliff. At the last moment she leaped into the air and soared over the edge out into the void between sky and stormy sea.

After a moment her wings began to beat the air and she took off higher into the sky. She had momentarily lost sight of Embri but she pivoted in the air and came back around only to spy her lower. "Darn...I went too high..." she muttered to herself and folded in her wings slightly to descend.

"EMBRI!" Helki called as she felt herself get closer. "EMBRRRRIIIII!"

The little filly with the flame colored mane half closed her wings, but still the stormwinds, whipped about her, carrying their captive off course. The beach was fading, rain driving against her hide like tiny stinging insects.

Embri's courage faltered, realizing that this storm was much more dangerous in the air than it was with all four hooves safely on land. The air howls and whips around her, disorienting, dark and frigid. Ears flattened back against her skull, flashes of lightning leave spots dancing in her frightened eyes. Was that a voice? Lachtna perhaps? The wind twists the sound into incomprehensible wailing noise, thunder deafens the rest.

A fierce gust topples Embri horn over hooves, batting her about the sky like a dried up leaf. Up and down were nearly indistinguishable, let alone direction.

Stupid... this was a terrible idea! Why ... why didn't I stay on the ground!

The storm seemed to answer the filly, howling with renewed vigor. She was being carried along with the storm front, far faster and farther than she had ever flown by herself. In mere moments, Embri was swallowed up by the clouds, disappearing from sight.

(( I'l leave this open for Satu and/or Snow to make a final wrap up post for their Kirin, if they so wish.))
