Really, I don't think he was supposed to be the main character. Pretty sure that part was filled by Ashe.
Way I see it, Vaan's supposed to be the little kid who just gets dragged along after a series of unfortunate events. I think he plays out our, that is the player's, ignorance as to what is going on in this huge world where in a lot more than just an evil empire is the problem.

Hm... He's not the main character, per se, but he's the protagonist. He's not the most important character, but he is the one we follow the closest. Reels is right in that the player is supposed to connect with the player, but... Well, Final Fantasy fans don't seem to want that; most of us just want to see the characters be awesome and badass and not like the average gamer in real life. sweatdrop
