personality ; Adam is cynical, he has little faith in anything but himself and lately even that has started to slip. He isn't a complete jerk, he has moments of seeming almost caring. Though they are somewhat rare and tend to only be around Kasch. He doesn't quite want anything bad to happen to his two charges but he'd rather not be the one that dealt with them unless it involves arguing (which he can't ever seem to do to Kasch). He prides himself on being able to win arguments and would be sorely put out to find someone who could beat him or strike him mute. In some ways he's quite the chameleon. If he wants something, he's not above lying and pretending to be a charming gentleman to get it (thought don't expect him to remain so, and his brain will sure to be thinking up many remarks about his companion). Adam likes to physically fight but doesn't tend to be prone to bar brawls, his aggravations are usually taken out on innocent people who he dupes into believing he is a priest and telling them they're damned no matter what they do. He does have a heart, it just tends to be more concerned about himself than anyone else. The whole idea of being depended on, of being loved unconditionally completely escapes him as being natural. He can understand blind devotion, but love is not a concept that he understands. Despite this he does have feelings for Kasch, more because he sees the child as a future outcast and thus sees some of his early beginnings in the boy.

I have a tentative book list written out all ready consisting of recommendations and Barnes and Noble Classics. I'll be attempting to write about the books I read in this thread. I don't know yet what I'll write about them, I've never done book reviews (not to be confused with book reports) so I really don't think it'll be anyone that will interest anyone. vanished along with the Viscount de Chagny. The narrator takes the reader on a journey to discover the truth about the Opera Ghost, O.G., who haunts the Opéra Garnier.
Leroux was inspired by the Opéra Garnier, mainly it's architecture and the incident of a counter-weight for the grand chandelier falling that killed one. With architecture consisting of underground cellars and an underground lake, it was the perfect setting for tales of a ghost. Leroux made use of his background of law and journalism to complete this story that was original printed as a serial in Le Gaulois.
If you love the musical or the movie (starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum), the novel is not quite as good. Some of the secondary characters were elevated in the musical/movie, such as the Girys, who aren't so much apart of the story in the novel. Madame Giry does have a part to play and is a link between the Opera Ghost and the managers. Little Meg is seen once or twice and has little to do at all with Christine, though she does know of the Ghost, having been told things by her mother.

What exactly was Philippe's problem with Raoul wanting to marry Christine? Perhaps a class issue. Why wasn't Philippe married at 41?
