The American Bushido dream. xd

Not all of us are Yanks, y'know. xp

Where did your journey start?
All the males in my family's generation had to do Shotokan Karate one time; me and my four cousins got a 'private' Karate lesson with one of the higher-ranking Shotokan Karate black belt.

To be honest, I wasn't VERY attracted to it at the time. It was just because my grandfather was an 8th Dan black belt (awarded by Funakoshi Gichin himself, apparently due to his contributions to the spread of Karate in Indonesia IIRC); he liked the idea--his daughters liked the idea as well.

But it was a very sanitized environment. Even though I got to 3rd Kyu, I still don't feel like I earned it. sweatdrop

That's how it started.

How far will it go?
I've tried some other martial arts when I had to stop Karate and moved to study in Australia; Aikido, Hapkido, Bujinkan...and now I met someone who knows some Qi Gong and Wing Chun. I'll probably continue doing Bujinkan some more and do some Ba Gua or Tai Chi to bolster my skills. I would also like to learn some Ba Ji Quan as well.

As far as I see it; I see my 'budo' or 'martial way' as more of a road of self-discovery and mastery. I'm very lazy, undisciplined, weak and pathetic in reality--yet Fate seems to keep throwing friends who do martial arts my way, as if telling me that it is a path that I should choose to walk on however hard I try to ignore it.

To round it all up, my grandfather told me one thing that I keep in mind whenever I train: that the world will be much better if people practice the martial art mindset instead of the martial art itself. And I agree.

But, who of you have been inspired to pursue martial arts?
Inspired, I'm not. It just seems to go my way.

Is there anyone among you who have cherished martial arts purely as a way of life? Are there any among you who cherish it as what it is, a martial art?
I am not so young so as to naively think that way. As I've mentioned before, it's better to practice a 'martial arts mindset' more than the martial arts itself. My 'budo' is a part of me. To let it dominate my life is to let it become unbalanced. Yin/Yang, anyone? 3nodding

Are there any of you out there willing to sacrifice as much?
See above.

Hmm ... Reasons ... ha, time to type some nonsensical crap to gain some Gaia cash, I need it to buy stuff ...

Where did the journey start:

(ok, some of it is fact, and it is marked in Blue, the rest of it is something I came up after typing for an hour, enjoy, even if it isn't as funny as www.realultimatepower.net ... mrgreen )

A long long time ago, when kung fu masters rule the earth and everyone can do Chi blasts and kill stuff easily ... there was this guy who was born and he was named " The Terror " which was me ... (because I am an evil person who likes to kill stuff ... and often had fun taking the lives of helpless victims I can find.)

At first I wanted to learn the art of the Great Essence Fist ... but well, most pugilists around me from the Youth Flower Group, convinced me to join the them and the Great Youth Flower Clan ... After reading the great secret manual of the Youth Flower Group Style Fist Art written by the strongest man in the world ... giving me the secret to get strength and the ability to fly in the air ...

Later, some people from the Youth Flower Group decided to leave to join the newest Kung Fu School in Town ... the Waaaata! Instant Kung Fu Group from Mount River Water (A name I came up with, when thinking of a story to write) ... aka Instant Fighters ( Instant fighters is the name I came up for a short webcomic I wanted to created )... and I became "Bo liao lor" and started to join them as well, secretly going to Mt River Water for Instant Kung Fu training ... and learned from that guy who can blast people with lighting one ... and after a day, I can fly around and kill stuff with lighting bolts. ( I just saw too many chinese kung fu drama filled with too many special effects ... )

(Actually, I just joined Goju Ryu when I went to my tertiary institution, in my late teens, the quality of training there is pretty good, as there are very few places that you can train for more than 3 to 4 hours a session.)

Later, I discovered that ninjas from Western Sun Mountain are hidden at Mount River Water ... I decided let them stay, only if they would pass me their secret manual ... their leader, some guy with long white hair who wants to take over the world, pass me the manual, if I promise to keep their operations confidential ...

After reading the secret manual of ninja magic and arts ... I gain super ninja powers and can now hurl blades of ice at my enemies .... freezing them ,before shattering them into tiny bits of frozen meat ...

After gaining my new found skills, the Instant Kung Fu masters and Youth Flower Group members realised what was going on and a great battle ensued ...

In the end, lots of extras died ...
some people blew up and some had gotten fried (by fireballs)
lots of people were dying and chi kung doctors ran amok ...
and now my name has gotten famous and whenever a person remembers the bloodly kung fu melee incident ... they remember me ... "The Terror" ...

(Ok, in real life, my skills at fighting are almost non existent, my strength is compared to that of a child and my footwork is like that of a stomping elephant ... Anyone who knows me, can easily take me down without a sweat ... sweatdrop )

How far will it go?

I am at 2nd or 3rd kyu now and still training ...

But, who of you have been inspired to pursue martial arts?

Ok, I was influenced by many factors ... from schoolmates in Primary school to movies like "Once upon a time in China" to books to people like " Mr Dust Mite" ( ha, he doesn't want me to reveal his name you see, he has a secret identity ... sweatdrop )

Is there anyone among you who have cherished martial arts purely as a way of life? Are there any among you who cherish it as what it is, a martial art?

Well, it is an form of art, as well as a way in life ... whether you train for pleasure or solely for self defence.

Are there any of you out there willing to sacrifice as much?
No ... I am not a fanatic or an extremist ... I can't spent 16 hours a day solely for training and doing nothing else ...

Maybe I'm beating at a dead horse here but I'm at work, feeling a little lethargic and decided that I can slack off by posting here instead.

It all began...

As a kid, as far as I can remember, I loved fighting. I love the feel of being capable of defending myself. I admired the Amazons, fell in love with the idea since I learned about them. And yes I was a Xena fan.

Moving on from that, it wasn't until I was 18 before my parents finally had to let me take martial arts. They said I was too violent, too unlady-like already. My poor parents. I never did quite turn out the way they wanted.

so how did I get started? I pulled open the community centre and went "eenie meenie mini mo" on the list of martial arts there are. I'm serious, I kid you not. I was incredibly lucky that I ended up with such a good school. I knew nothing, didn't do any research, and just jumped right into it.

As for how far I will go, I don't know. But it's part of my life, I love it with a passion and I think I'll it will always be a part of me no matter what, even if I have a family with three kids (doubtful). Well, if I have kids, they're just going to have to deal with it. I am not looking to be the best, to go to a certain dan, but simply just to keep at it, to learn skills and to be able to fight well. I have my own standards (namely right now, to be able to win in a spar with friends for once.) That's pretty much it.

Where did the journey start:Well, for as long as I could remember, my two older brothers had been in Tae Kwon Do. That's when my mom decides to put me in Tae Kwon Do, along with my brothers. I was trained under Y.H. Park. If you do not know who he is, he was the Coach for the 1988 U.S. Team in the Olympics (Female won gold and males won silver, losing to Korea). Anywho, that was when I was 5 years old at the time. To tell you the truth, I actually didn't like Tae Kwon Do. That's when 2 years ago, my mother decided that I needed to go back to Tae Kwon Do. This time, however, was different. I actually liked being in Tae Kwon Do class for once. That's when after 5 months, I became a black belt (I'd stop taking it when I was in the 7/12 belt). So then, for some reason, the feeling of Martial Arts had hit me. I felt as if I wanted to learn more Korean arts. That's when I soon began to take up Hapkido. Basically, Hapkido was like Aikido, Tae Kwon Do and Judo put together. Soon afterwards, my father, who had been a black belt in Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do in korea over 20 years ago, decides to teach me Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do. Soon, I also met a friend of mine. He was raised in the bronx and he learned Muay Thai kickboxing there. After awhile, we became very close. That's when we decided to spar ever once in awhile. And damn, his knees felt like rocks. He was also very fast for his size (he's 6'3 and weighs 215 lbs.). So yeah, I'd get bruises and black eyes. He'd get torn muscles and bruises as well. So he decided to teach me a bit of Muay Thai. The kicks are not as technical as the other arts I've trained in (well, atleast that's how I think), but they sure as hell were effective. Sadly, just a few months ago, I suffered an injury during my Tae Kwon Do training. I had torn a ligament and just barely missed the tendon. The doctor said that I could no longer do anymore Martial Arts. Bullshit was what I thought. After about a month, I continued training it. Hurt as hell, but it paid off. Although I still can't do many Martial Arts (the injury was perminent), I still like to train anyway.

How far will it go:For as long as I live, I hope.

As of now, I'm looking up the arts of Judo and Jeet Kune Do. Maybe even Shotokan Karate.

my journy first started when the doctor told my parrents i had the worst case of add he had ever seen so my parents relutant to put me on medication at first handed me over to my uncle at the time tony a korean war vet who learned the korean version of ninjistu from one of them old dudes you see in the kung fu movies (you know old hermit lives in a shack and eats only rice but could kill a guy by looking at them one of those ) so he tried to teach me but i lacked the dicipline nessacary for me to even be taught self dicipline. Yeah my add was that bad, so then my parents found something much simpler Soo Bhak Do then called Tang Soo Do(the two arts to the best of my knoledge split up when the federation dicided to change the name back to what it was origonally called when grandmaster kwang jang nim was first working on the style) any ways thy signed me up but soon tok me out of it when i started using it on my little bro then in about 3rd grade i signed back up and did it till i had to move and recently i found a school that teaches it in my area and am noe back in it for good (i missed two months one cause i was getting setteled into my new job the other(june) cause my grandpa died )

i love to learn about the martal arts and would some day like to get my former uncle tony(hes my former uncle cause his bro got a divorce from my aunt when i was little) to teach me that korean ninjitsu and to do hand stand pushups (hes like 60 or 70 and does those when he wakes up he used to be able to do them on his fingers when he was 50[he once did one with one hand on his finger tips]) also id like to learn more about shotokan from my freinds dad pluss there are the styles i want to learn before i die which are capoera then eather, drunk boxing or monkey kung fu and mabey regular ninjitsu and or kendo

Ha ... just started martial arts at 18 ... hmm ... reminds me of some people I know, they joined the Karate club at this age too ... (mainly because most students who enter Poly(technic) are around 17 to 18 ... ^ ^" )

Anyway, I don't think that martial arts are all that violent ... it is an art form with combat applications. Anyway, I know a lot of girls who take up Martial Arts ... and they weren't violent and unlady-like ... sweatdrop
