Casia was relieved he had asked that. It meant he hadn't known, and the last shadows of doubt she had had about his intentions in talking to her could quietly vanish. Still, it hurt to talk about. "A few." she admitted, hands twisting wretchedly in her lap. "I don't want to go into detail about them though." She couldn't talk about it, especially not Anna yet. She still felt like Anna was going to be the one picking her up after school sometimes, it was too surreal to have to talk about her in past tense. "It wasn't their fault they had to send me off or anything. But it's kind of crazy, you know? I didn't think I was going to have to adjust to a new home and stuff again. I'm sick of getting used to new moms." Casia gave him a weak grin. "At this rate, I'm going to be an expert, anyway. Real flexible for just about anything, that'll be me." She needed to joke about it, if only to distract herself from it.

Because they were on the topic though, she continued in a slightly more hesitant voice. "That was why I asked you about adopted children though." she said carefully. "Because of how you introduced yourself, I thought maybe..."

The look on his face was answer enough. A mixture of pain, sadness, and loneliness that only came from having someone you loved wrenched away from you more than once. Merroth could feel himself crumbling. "Could I, um..." He lifted his hand, intending to ask for his handkerchief back, but could not complete the question and looked away, barely able to swallow, hand falling back down to his lap. His voice became a whisper. "Sorry."

For a fleeting moment, he heard the drums, and he closed his eyes and willed them away.

Casia bit her lip, sorry she had even brought it up. Wanting to comfort Merroth, who she wasn't quite ready to call a friend, not until he said it first, she placed the handkerchief on his lap. "No, s'my fault for bringing it up." she muttered. She looked at the ground, joining in the painful silence easily. There was, she thought, a lot to regret. But...

But if she hadn't ever been rehomed, she would never have met Anna. She probably wouldn't even be here right now, if it came to that. And though this wasn't quite the most cheerful place in the world to be right now, it wasn't a bad place to be. Quietly, she began to sing, almost unconsciously trying to help heal both herself and the boy next to her.

"There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends
I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all...
"

She opened her mouth to sing the next part and caught herself, a furious blush creeping over her cheeks. It fit, yes, but considering she was actually singing to someone else instead of just her usual audience of one, it might lead to a totally different interpretation than she'd intended it to. Furthermore, Merroth was like her but he was still a boy. She'd get funny looks if she went around singing stuff like that to boys.

The drums were washed away and he was listening ever so carefully, but all he said at the break was, "Did you get taken away, too? Or did you want to leave? Or did they send you back?" He could answer yes to all three.

Casia shook her head. "I was taken away, I didn't want to leave." She bit her lip and fidgeted even more, clearly uncomfortable with even saying these things. "I wish they'd send me back." The siren's wings fluttered a little at the fantasy she had been imagining sometimes guiltily at night. She moved away from the topic, pushing his questions back at him. "You?"

Counting came easily to Merroth and put him back in control. He began to list off on his fingers. "Let's see, first one and second one I got sent back, and then I was taken away, then I was taken away again, then I wanted to leave and they sort of let me." Which was his way of saying he would have died rather than stay with Peri and her husband, and was willing to have gone that far. "I think I might be missing one send-back. I was little at the time, so it's a bit jumbled in the memory." He flourished his hand in dramatic illustration of memory-jumbling.

Casia's eyes widened. "That's hairy." she said, sounding just about as grave as 60's slang could sound. Merroth must have had a much harder time of things than her and she felt bad for feeling bad about her own situation, which was a feeling that was confusing to feel. She wasn't surprised he acted the way he did, just two adoptions made her practically starved for attention, for causing someone else to just notice her and only her for even the length of a song. Slowly, she asked "What about the mom you have now? Do you like her?" Casia was vaguely aware that fathers existed, but as she had never had one before, or met one live and in person, it was the same sort of way she was vaguely aware sea cucumbers existed. People talked about them, but they were not something that sprung immediately to her mind in conversations.

Merroth loved Emma. She was wonderful and attentive and free-spirited and could turn even the worst day into a fun one. He wasn't quite ready to admit that yet, so he only said, "I like her." If Casia had known to ask him about his father, she would have gotten a much more confident response. Emma always had time for Merroth no matter what. Boston was always busy but made time, an act which Merroth cherished dearly. "What about you? Do you like your mom?"

Casia frowned. She didn't know ANYTHING about the woman she was supposed to call her mom now. "Um.. She's okay." she said finally. She didn't trust herself to say anything else.

The door opened at that moment and Casia startled as the woman in question looked in. "Casia, I've been waiting outside for fifteen minutes." she said amusedly, and then blinked when she saw Merroth. "Oh, is this a little friend of yours?" The siren got up a little too quickly, and something strange slid into her voice. "Oh, gosh, I'm sorry!" She gave a slightly-too-charming laugh and added, "Yeah, one of my friends." Waving vaguely at Merroth, she said "Well, thank you for a groovy chat, but looks like I've gotta split." She headed towards the door and the woman who she wasn't quite ready to call 'Mom' yet, but paused before she left. Turning back, she looked at Merroth and spoke in a tone more like what she had been using just minutes ago, more real and less syrupy. "I come in here a lot afterschool." Then she walked out and Jane closed the door behind them.
