He shakes his head and he chuckles softly. "I'm fine." He looks up as he catches the door to the bathroom opening out of the corner of his eye and he smiles softly as he sees Serenity coming out. Now maybe she'd have some questions for him so they can get to know each other. He had to admit that he was looking forward to this, though there were so many questions that he didn't know the answer to. It was kinda scary yet exciting at the same time.
Prince seemed to notice the same thing. He got to his feet from where he was munching on the ice cream. He turned toward Serenity and waved. "Heey Serenity! Gaunt wants to date you! So hurry up an--mmn!" He blinked when Gaunt slapped his hand over his mouth. Gaunt laughed nervously, his cheeks coloring. "Aahah.. listen to that Prince.."

Serenity blinked at Prince and Gaunt as she moved to sit on the bench across from them. "I ... sorry?" she asked, perplexed. Had she heard correctly? Gaunt was blushing ...
And shades didn't it make him even more handsome.
She herself blushed at the thought, and she banished it from her mind as quickly as it had come up. "I ... I'm afraid I must apologize," she said softly, her eyes lowering, folding her hands in her lap. "I'm not sure what I did ... but I can't help but feel that I must have done something to offend you, Prince ... so please ..."
She bowed her head to him, her hair falling in front of her face. "Please accept my apology, for whatever I might have done."
Ian stared at his mom, open-mouthed in amazement. Wow ... what had brought THAT on?
"Prince!" he exclaimed, reaching over and flicking his ear. "You made my mom feel bad!"
As if it had been the Prince's own fault and not his own as well, indirectly.

Prince blinked as suddenly all attention was back on him. He blinked again. He didn't even know what to make out of what this was. Why was Serenity apologizing to him? It was a flick to his ear that dragged him back to reality. He rubbed his ear a little and he stammers. "I.. I.. uh.. You see. .uh.. you.. you didn't.. really.. do anything. Its just.. that.. you know.. Ian.. and I.. well.. we wanted you and Gaunt to get together. You two seem to seem to like each other.. so.. you know.. I was just trying to find a way to bring you and him together!"
Gaunt blinked a few times at the explanation, and while he suspected as much, if he wasn't flat-out told, it was still shocking to hear. This seemed like one of those sappy single-parent love stories, where the kids like each other so much that they work together to get their parents to hook up so everybody can be family. Was that sappy, or what?

Serenity's eyes grew wide at the Prince's admission, and her entire body froze, her face burning yet again. Bring them together? Closer than what they already were? Of course she wanted to get to know him, he was a nice man and she would be happy for them to be friends ... but she had never thought to go a step further with anyone, anyone at all ...
Ian jumped to his feet and ran over to Serenity and put one hand on her arm, as high as he could reach. "It's okay, Mom," he told her, his voice filled with concern. "He didn't mean to get you all dirty and stuff!"

The Prince bit his lip as he watched the reaction of Serenity to his words. She appeared stuck on her pose and ready to explode. It only took a few seconds of this lasting that he looked down and looked ashamed. "I.. I'm sorry.."
Gaunt looks down at the Prince and he shakes his head slowly with a kind smile. "It's like I told you. These sorts of things take time to develop. And it's up to me and her whether or not we want to walk down that path together. So it's no use in trying to rush it, okay?" He gently pats the top of the Prince's head - or as best as he could with the hat that rested on the Surprise's head.
"B-but.. Serenity and Ian are really fun to be around.. And.. I know you like them too.. so what's to hold you back?" Prince looked up at Gaunt, appearing a little teary-eyed. Perhaps he was feeling so bad about making Serenity react the way she did that he was about to cry.
It was hard to try to explain it to someone so young and who had such a mindset. All he could do, for now, was to continue to smile kindly and shrug his shoulders. "One should never try to rush into love, Prince. Love is a sacred and fragile thing. It has to be treated gently and tenderly, and it is something that can take a long time to take root. It's.. just best to take things slowly and one day at a time." The Prince just stared up into Gaunt's face at that explanation, trying to wrap his small mind around what he said. It was obvious that right now, it didn't make sense to him.

Serenity forced herself to calm down as Gaunt spoke with his son, listening to his little lecture. Her heart went out to the little Second ... he hadn't meant what he had done in a bad way.
She lifted her head a little and watched Ian as he ate his ice cream, her mind echoing Gaunt's words to the Prince. His words about love ... she had heard them before, or at least the same idea, but only from her parents. Everyone at school went from one boyfriend to another, and it had all become so meaningless ... but Gaunt, she thought, knew what true love was meant to be.
Her respect for him rose even higher than it had been, and she allowed herself a smile.
"You know," she said softly, brushing her hair aside and looking across the table at Gaunt, "it's rare to find anyone who feels the way you do ... so many people nowadays think that love is something they can create, or toss around and discard ... as if it has no more meaning than the napkins we use to wipe our hands with. I had begun to think that ... that the true meaning of love ... was lost to our world."
Her smile widened slightly, and she lowered her eyes self consciously, her cheeks tingeing a soft pink. "I think you are very unique, Gaunt," she admitted quietly. "And very special."
Ian was pleased as punch. "See?" he beamed at Gaunt. "She does like you!"
After a look from his mom, he added, "As a friend."

Gaunt was, of course, unaware of Serenity's feelings toward him. Gaunt was just speaking his mind, of course. And he was well aware of what was going on in today's world, even if he was unaware that the same sort of problems plagued Gaia. He glances up when he hears her soft voice reaching his ears, and he smiles softly as he hears his words. "I know the feeling, Serenity. I don't think people in recent times have a clue what love is. They're well acquainted with lust, and mistake the need to not be lonely for love and devotion." He smiles softly as he reaches across the table to gently rest his hand on her wrist. "And if believing what I believe means that I am special, then you are just as much so, Serenity."
All this was soaring way over the head of the poor Prince. He nodded slowly at Ian's pronouncement, with the correction, and chimes in a 'Yeah! I think so too!' but it seemed clear by his body language that he didn't understand the situation and the words the two 'grown ups' were having. That lead to him being bored, but fortunately he had ice cream to keep him company. At least, until it would melt away or he finished eating it.

Serenity's wrist tingled a bit at Gaunt's touch, and her smile widened as she looked at him.
"You know," she thought aloud, almost amused, "I think you would fit in very well with my mother's world ... it's so different from this one, and from Gaia ... everyone there shares your view - and mine - of what love is. There is a common saying among her people ... that there are two ways to die. The first is by murder ... the second, by a broken heart."
She shrugged one shoulder, blushing faintly yet again. "I suppose that we Seconds may be similar ... though we can also get sick. Then again, our kind is so new that no one really knows if we are immortal or if we simply don't grow old. I have uncles who are adults, and as far as anyone knows they will remain like that forever ... unless by some accident of fate, they die. Myself, I have one more growth to go through ... the goddesses have told us some of what will happen to us, but not everything."
She was babbling now, trying to convince herself that there was nothing more in the touch of his hand than the simple return of a compliment. She was flustered, but as far as she knew it was because she was already so comfortable with him, he who was essentially still a stranger.
"But you," she added, looking at him curiously, "you are a regular human ... right? Or do you have other blood in you?"
Ian was still munching away on the toppings for his sundae and hadn't yet reached the ice cream itself. Of course, the only toppings he hadn't gotten were the healthy ones - the strawberries and nuts that the Prince had gone for.
"Hey, can I try some of yours?" he asked his new friend, completely tuning out their parents by this time. "You can try some of mine if you want!"

He retrieves his hand relatively quickly. The touch only lasted for a few seconds before he found a more comfortable pose to stay in. He smiles and he shrugs a little bit. "I like that philosophy. I imagine I like very much that prospect of growing old, celebrating some 50 or more years with the woman of my dreams." He shrugs and he chuckles softly as he samples the ice cream again slowly. "Mmn. Then if Seconds are fairly new, then I guess it's still to be determined whether a Second and a human are able to even be compatible. I imagine if you really do turn out to be an immortal being, that falling in love with a human would only end in pain. And after so much pain, I also imagine that it would be horribly difficult to fall in love again because you don't want to feel that again." He was babbling now as well, still just trying to understand whether or not he's compatible with a Second. There were just so many unknowns in the equation, it was hard to even fathom an educated guess.
Prince nodded and he smiled brightly when the trade was suggested. "Sure! I'd like to try yours!" He pulls the spoon with him and lightly spears the other sundae, pulling away a spoonful of goodie-and-ice cream mixture. He pulls the spoon closer to him, and tries a bit. "Mmmmm~! So sweet~!"

"But it has happened," Serenity pointed out, cupping her chin in her hands, elbows resting on the tabletop, "that mortals and immortals have not only fallen in love, but had rick and happy lives together, has it not? And even if the immortal must live on after the death of their loved one, would they regret it? 'Parting is such sweet sorrow,' as we learn from one of the poets we have to read in school ... and though there is sadness in death, is there not peace and happiness in memories?"
Maybe she was getting too philosophical.
"But even among immortals," she added, "there is death and sorrow in parting. My grandfather was murdered ... I think perhaps close to a century ago now. My mother was very young. The only reason my grandmother did not also die was because the love that she had for him surpassed death."
Suddenly she blushed and smiled sheepishly. "Of course, he was reborn and they did meet again," she admitted, "but that doesn't happen very often, from what I understand."
She shook her head. "My point is, I suppose ... what is the point in living life if you aren't willing to take a risk for your happiness?"
Ian's eyes lit up and he reached across the space and plucked a strawberry that was bigger than his hand from the Prince's sundae. He licked his lips in anticipation.
"I bet this is gonna be great," he giggled, opening his mouth as wide as it would go and taking a huge bite. He nearly choked on it, but he managed to bite it in half just in time, and he coughed softly and looked at the Prince, his eyes watering slightly. "Heh ... that was great!" he grinned.

He nods slowly in ponderance as she pointed out how it's happened. At least in myth, from the Earth's point of view, did things like that happen. "If.. I believed in a sort of thing like an afterlife, I would think dying would be a very lonely prospect in a mortal - immortal pairing. Because as a mortal spirit, it would be sorrowful to know that the likelihood of my loved one joining me in this afterlife woudln't be very good. Of course, if everybody gets reincarnated, then there's always the possibility that couples will last for eternity, just get reborn over and over again as mortals and immortals die and come back." He shrugs and he chuckles slowly. "I guess that's one of the great mysteries of life. Nobody really knows what happens after death. There are a multitude of theories out there, and each probably has as much chance of being right as any other. But I digress. Assuming we only have one life to live, then it only makes sense to grab it by the horns and try to make the most out of it. Laugh every day, love whole-heatedly, and all that inspiring stuff."
Prince nods as he munches on the spoonful of not-good-for-you ice cream and he grins at Ian. "See? Fruits and stuff are good and sweet too! That's what Gaunt taught me the other day. There's this stuff he eats that is brown and long, and that stuff kinda tastes blech, but there's fruit in the middle and that makes it all good! But Gaunt says that brown stuff is really good for you, but if it wasn't for the sweet middle I don't think I'd eat it."

Serenity couldn't help but giggle at Gaunt's enthusiasm. "I have to admit, I don't know much about anything beyond death in this world, or in Gaia," she smiled, "or what happens to Seconds if they die ... my only experience comes from my mother's people. But is it not inspiring to think that after death we may still have the opportunity to return and see our loved ones again?"
She picked up her spoon for the first time, smiling warmly at Gaunt. "You're very optimistic, I think," she told him honestly. "It's refreshing to see that in a world so full of pessimists."
Ian took another bite of the strawberry, nodding. "I think I know what you're talking about ... Mom used to give me food like that before she 'dopted me. But I like the whole thing. I just like all the food there is! Mostly," he added solemnly. "Sometimes my Uncle Triton makes food that's real weird ... I don't eat that though."
He dipped the rest of the strawberry in his candy-covered ice cream and finished it off in one huge bite. "Hey, did your dad find you before you came out of your vase?" he asked. "Or did he find you after, like my Mom did?"

He smiles softly and he shrugs a little. "Nobody knows much about death. It's one of the great mysteries of life because we can't exactly come back and tell each other what we find on the other side. Some people think that there IS nothing on the other side, and we just stop existing. To be honest, that prospect scares me. Something like that would make me afraid of death." He chuckles lightly at her compliment and he returns the warm smile and he shrugs. "And you seem to be the same way, Serenity. So it is just as refreshing for me."
Prince smiles as he finishes the sweet-loaded ice cream and he shrugs a little as he makes his way back over to to his strawberry one. "I haven't been out of my vase for long. So Gaunt hasn't fed me a lot of stuff yet. Mostly those fruit bars, and sometimes he sneaks something back from what he calls.. a.. a cafeteria." He tilts his head as he glances at Ian. "Wh.. what does your uncle make, exactly?" He was curious, but almost afraid to hear it.
He shakes his head and he smiles softly. "I got out of my vase for the first time and I was in Gaunt's house. He shares it with a LOT of people, and everybody has small rooms. Most of them share a room with someone else, but Gaunt has one by himself."

Serenity giggled at Gaunt, not at his viewpoint (which was very serious) but just at the fact that it was so easy to talk with him.
"You know," she smiled shyly, poking at her ice cream again, "I think I would like very much to meet up with you again. I find it easy to talk with you more than with many of the people I know ... and far more interesting. The girls at school talk only about fashion and movies ... but I've never met anyone there who thinks as deeply as you do."
Ian nodded in understanding. "I'm kind of old," he admitted to Prince. "At least, for a Second. We don't know how old, because I don't know how long I was out of my vase when Mom found me, but still."
He grinned at the Prince's question. "You should try some of the stuff my uncle makes! He makes all sorts of things! Fish and pizza and cakes and everything you can think of! And it's soooooo good!" He wrapped his hands around his stomach and giggled. "He even has a cafe! But not in this city, and not even in this world."
He paused, and his gaze turned thoughtful. "I think you've gotta be wrong," he shook his head. "Gaunt doesn't have a room of his own ... he shares with you ... but do you guys live in a mansion or something? It sounds kind of like our clan grounds, except we all have different houses."

He smiles softly and he nods slowly. "Well. I think I really want to meet up with you again too, Serenity. The people at my school do a lot of the same thing. Though they also talk a lot about their schoolwork too. I just enjoy thinking. I'm not a philosopher or anything of the sort, but I enjoy considering life and all its issues."
The Prince nods slowly and he smiles some. "Oh. I see. That's kinda cool though! It must be nice to be able to stay young."
He giggles softly and he leans toward Ian in an interested sort of manner. "Oh! Your uncle likes to cook! So does Gaunt, so he says, but where we live doesn't have a lot to cook with. He just has a pot that he puts rice in, and he has a box that he puts everything else in. He turns a dial and it comes out hot!" Of course, he was talking about a crockpot-style rice cooker, and a microwave.
He thinks over what Ian has to tell him and he shakes his head slowly. "I think.. Gaunt called it.. ah.. what was it.. a dorm! I don't know what dorm means, but apparently its when a bunch of people live together in a big building!"
