My first year in marching band, our drum major came out of colorguard (no offense to any of them, this is entirely specific to this one person) and couldn't even keep a steady beat! They had to get her a watch with a metronome in it so she could keep time!

we have a DM and a Assistant DM the DM is good and because he knows he is good he is trying very hard to make our ADM have the worst time possible for her years as DM because he wants us to want him back i guess (all a theory i made up in my head cause he really is a douche to her and has told other band members to act their worst for her)
Our ADM is nice but gets pushed around to easily and doesnt get mad at the things that should but gets mad at the things that shouldn't get her mad

MoonDancerRising It is really hard to say whether i like my drum majors or because one of my drum majors likes me and i don't like him, he always fights with me, he's is a really annoying sophmore and i am a junior. And the other one DM is okay. So tell me do you like your drum majors at all? You have a sophomore drum major? In my band, the position of drum major is saved only for a senior, normally one that was previously a brass/woodwind captain or field commander (sometimes they come from being section leaders). Anyway, I don't get along with my drum major. Last year and the year before, the drum majors were both awesome guys who knew music very well. This year, our drum major had to use a metronome pretty much every day during practice. Our band director kept blaming the band for getting behind but I remember the pit telling the horn line that during their daily practice, the drum major couldn't even conduct correctly for them. He was just a favorite. That's how the DMs usually get into that position.

Head Drum Major: He's a good musician, but he speaks Engrish (so he's hard to understand sometimes) and doesn't know how to lead a band properly. He says the wrong things at the wrong time too often, and doesn't particularly care for marching band.
Assistant Drum Major: She's a really good percussionist, and is well-liked by most members of the band. She exudes more confidence than the other two, but has the least amount of dedication. Rather than helping with drill, she'd talk to her friends on the field. She was able to keep time the best, and got respect out of the jazz kids that hate marching band.
Parade Drum Major: She's one of my good friends. She was stuck on metronome all season, except for the < week that we practiced and performed our parade march. She has the least amount of playing ability, but is best at mace. She also has the most patience; she has to deal with snide comments from the jazz kids often, and though she's still learning, she's always trying her best.

My freshman and sophmore year I had a drum major I adored and still wish she didn't graduate. She was so nice. My junior year drum major was okay. She was just way too bossy. Her little sister, who is a sophmore, was the drum major for my senior year this year. I always hear a lot of crap from a certain someone I will not name that always is on her case because she (the 2nd year) got it and not her (the person I am talking about). I say the sophmore drum major did well her first year and may she excell more in the coming years.

The whole band and I absolutely adore our drum majors. Our head drum major is amazingly nice and he's the best drum major ever. He won a community award for all his hard work as a drum major that gave the band boosters $1,000. Our other two drum majors are also awesome. I don't know anyone in our band that doesn't like them all. Two of them are seniors and the other's a junior.

we have one drum major...in the past, all my dms we people like...idk. almost like a celebrity sorta. like i know them, but its not like i'd ever start any sort of conversation with them or anything! but this year, i'm a senior, and i was friends with our current dm last year (kinda...one of those we're-in-the-same-class-so-i-guess-we'll-talk-to-each-other friendships) but now its almost like he's one of the past dms if that makes sense...also a part of me is still sad another of my friends didn't get it. i was trying not to speculate about the next dm last year, since i'm always wrong, but the night before we had a conversation and i was like "whoa! he'd be a good dm!" but no...they had to pick the guy who'd been close to academically ineligible (bad grades) for his first 3 years of high school...*sigh* oh well

Well we basically have one drum major and he and I are friends. He's alright as a drum major. He doesn't really get angry at us or anything. Our band director does enough of that anyway.

Freshman Year: 1 DM: Hated him with a passion. He was rude, egotistical, and if he happened to know you before he became drum major(me) then he treated you like you were the worst marcher in the band. While that was partailly true, he didn't have to announce it and say even what i was doing right was wrong. And he didn't have to make me and a few others go up to "demonstrate" just so he could comment how bad we did to the rest of the band.He had been drum major since his sophomore year. I'll admit, he was pretty good at conducting, but he tended to overexxagerate and lose his tempo, or go too fast.
Sophomore Year: Head DM: Same as above Assistant DM: She was awesome. Totally made up for our ahole head dm. She was nice, a good conductor, and tried to be friends with everyone. She would still call you out if you made a mistake, but more of in your ear or just loud enough for the people around you to hear. 2nd Assistant: He didn't conduct much, only when we were backfield or couldn't see tthe other dms. He was pretty cool too. he hardly ever got mad, but when he did you were n trouble(we thought he killed his twin bro once). he would always tell dirty jokes and such. And again, he wouldn't call you otu in front of the whole band. He would let you know in a queter voice so it was less embarrassing, ut you still got the picture. All three were seniors and graduated. Saddest graduation ceremony ever. thsoe seniors were all awesome that year.
Junior Year(This year): Head DM: He is a senior, and hes really nice. He made a great dm as well. I can definately see him being a bd like he wants to be. During rehearsals, he was kinda rough and yelled a lot, but thats what he ahad to do to get the point across(my band kinda lost its discipline when our bd left). But during water breaks he would come up to you and joke aroudn with you, then the moment he stepped onto the field he was serious again. Outside of band, he is really nice and friendly. He is in my anatomy class and we all have a lot of fun(cat discection is fun with band friends) I'm going to miss him. He has that on/off serous switcht hat a good dm/bd needs. Assistant dM: I'm not too fond of him. He is too laid back, and an ahole outside of band. He cant keep a steady tempo on his own and is kinda timid with his patterns. He had to use a metronome a lot. And he spreads rumors about other band kids. Unfortunately hes a junior, and already acting like he got head dm for next year(w have an audition. previous dms dont automatically make dm next year)

We have two. One of them is a senior and she is amazing. She doesn't choose favorites, she never singles people out, she only yells when it's needed, when she makes a mistake she understands that it was her fault and is able to accept it, and she can conduct and keep everyone at a steady tempo.
The junior one on the other hand....she's, well, she's awful. She always picks favorites and never yells at them, she always singles people out (mostly newbies), she screams her head off ALL THE TIME, if she makes a mistake she blames it on the percussion, and she cannot conduct worth crap. At one point, she was conducting so fast that we ( the guard) couldn't do our dance part. And she yelled at me because our raincoats got switched so she threw a raging fit at me. It's rediculous. confused

Our senior DM who I love very much is graduating, so that leaves me with two "meh" senior DMs next year and one big question mark on the one from my grade (it's even been hinted that the director won't take another one.) The first is very nice, but she doesn't really do anything and her conducting is really inconsistent. The other is nice to me, but damn, can she be a beeyotch when she wants to be.
So, meh.

We have three drum majors: two seniors, and me (a sophomore). Reading this thread kind of makes me worry what other people think of me, haha.
But anyway, I love the other two drum majors. Our senior drum major, John, was a DM last year and he's a great guy. He's really funny, and makes sure everybody knows what to do while joking around the whole time, so nobody can get mad at him. The other drum major who's a senior this year is one of my good friends. She decided to become DM because of how much she loves marching band. She's not the best conductor, or at calling commands, but you can see her passion at every rehearsal.
As for me, I'm still learning. Hopefully I'll be able to live up to the title of Senior Drum Major next year!
So I have to ask, what do you think makes a good drum major? Which is more important: conducting well and calling commands correctly, or having a good personality?
