Heron was satisfied. He was amidst the middle of the marsh with a close follower feeling not only euphoric from his travels, but somewhat important. "And if I do not come?" He asked, finally returning his gaze the the doe.

"Then I'll be lost without you!"

Forgotten Feathers didn't lie. If it weren't for the buck she'd still have her nose sitting in the water, forgetting where she was or how to get back home.

"But, if you promise, you'll have to come!"

The buck's ears went flat once more, surely she was joking? They had only just met and she was lost without him? Well, according to the pale doe, he was her bird, and she was a chaser of birds. Whose to say she wouldn't find another bird? Yes, he saved her from the marsh and was leading her closer still toward what must have been home, but he certainly wasn't the only bird in the swamp. Perhaps they could strike a deal?

"If I am the only bird who could save you, then I suppose I have no choice..."

Forgotten Feathers' ears perked up and she stopped. She was slightly alarmed. Was he going to leave her here? She'd never get home! She anxiously kicked her hooves around in the ground and tilted her head. "No choice?"

Heron felt that familiar wave of laughter once more, though it failed to escape. He paused along with her, nodding somberly. "...but to return to you." He added, surveying her aggravated stance. He was far more accustomed to this appearance in does. "I couldn't leave you lost in the mire if I'm the only one who could lead you home." The buck strained to see past the high morning sun, they were making slow progress.

Forgotten Feathers sighed a relief and happiness. She was so glad she wasn't going to be left in the swamp... to be... forgotten. It seemed to be her destiny. She found herself walking extra close to Night Heron, as if, making sure she wouldn't be left behind. "Then lead away!"

He continued his step, the darker half of a black and white pair, and suddenly realized how silly this doe really was. She could very well be crazy. Perhaps she never was lost at all - but someone could say the same of him. He seemed out of his mind, probably even to his kin. Perhaps they were quite the complimentary duo, they were merely two ends of the extreme. "What If I become lost?" The buck mused. "Then we're both in a rut."

"Well, being lost together is better than being apart," she said, chipper as can be. Still very delighted about not being forgotten. "If worst comes to worse... two voices are much louder than one! We could call out until some cute little foxbun finds us and hops us in the right direction."

"Yes, because foxbuns seem to do you a lot of good." He added, nudging the clumsy doe as gently as possible. Toppling her again would only further postpone their journey. The grumpy buck was rather kind when sleep-deprived. Or perhaps it was the doe's striking resemblance to his radiant elder. Regardless of the reason, he found himself growing very fond of the doe, and his growing interest in their proximity was proof of that.

"To justify them, in all this mess, it was the start of the journey that lead me to you." She whined lightly as she was nudged, worried she was about to topple over from the soft force bestowed on her side but fortunately, they managed to stand straight.

"How do you know which way is which? The swamp all looks the same!" She found, in her anguish in the situation or rather her lack of direction, that she was prodding Night Heron with her nose. Softly, and mindlessly.

That was a suitable retort. The buck shook his head about, taking a deep inhale of the musty swamp air. "Birds have a brilliant sense of direction," he began, his expression far too serious. "They flee the swamp when the cold rolls in, but they always return." He continued his slow-paced gait, completely undisturbed by the doe's persistent probing. "It's in my eyes -- but every Kimeti has it in their nose...don't you know the scent of your own home?"

Forgotten Feathers was suddenly feeling very inept. "E-every kimeti?" She said as she begun to walk even slower. "What if I don't? Is there something wrong with me?" Disturbed by this, she sniffed the air. She couldn't fly, could barely walk without tripping and couldn't even find her way home! She must be useless. They should just leave her in the middle of the swamp and forget about her.

Her mind was ridden with thoughts about abandonment and failure. "I don't know... I can't walk, how could you expect me to smell my way home?"

Heron cast a shallow glance at his companion, eyes drawn magnetically to her winged marking before reaching her eyes. He couldn't have her frustrated and slow, he would never bring her home in time to finish his own journey. Her condition could be pulled full circle. "Perhaps you're too much like a bird..." He offered, slowing his gait to match Forgotten Feathers'. "You can not smell your home, you just need to learn where it is and never forget. So when I do return you to your home, remember it." Despite her giddy nature, the doe harbored dark anxieties. Perhaps she was more like his Bitterleaf than he had thought...

"Or maybe not enough like one. I can't fly, I can't find my way home upon instinct. A failure. Forgotten." Forgotten Feathers seemed to drown on in her thoughts for a moment, as if recalling something a long time ago, before she finally snapped out of it and came back to her giddy self.

"Oh! I remember this tree!" She expressed it so delightfully as if she had discovered gold or found water in a desert. "I remember! I remember!" She appeared to dance in a triumphant trot around Night Heron before suddenly feeling embarrassed and slanting back to his side.
