As the bike continued to speed away the handlebars were wripped from his grasp. The pull, plush a stumble from his feet, sent him tumbling forward. He rolled once head over heels and landed in the dirt awkwardly on his bottom. His head throbbed a little, but his dizziness cleared away to leave a dull ache in some of his limbs.
He stood up with a whince and then looked to see where Maddy had gone. It gave his heart a bit of a jump; he could see she had crashed in the distance.
"Maddy?" He jogged as quickly as he could over to her, "Are you ok?"

"I-I'm fine." Her voice was a bit slurred, but it was mostly shock. Tentatively, she wiggled her fingers, and then her toes, mentally keeping count. Yep, everything seemed to be there, still.
"Are you?" She opened her eyes to look at him, noting the dirt and the rustled clothing. Obviously he hadn't escaped entirely unscathed from her little escapade.
A pang of guilt shot through her stomach. "I'm so sorry! I just, I didn't-- and then my feet fell off and my hands, I couldn't find the stupid brake and-" She heaved a dry sob, more shocked and guilt-ridden than anything.

"Oh no, wait...don't cry-" Jamie felt a little lost. Her being near tears threw him. He really didn't know how to handle crying (he'd never been big on it himself and his sister never did) so he certainly didn't want her to start. He didn't like feeling helpless. He was a fixer and if he couldn't fix something...well...it just wasn't a good feeling.
"Here, look, it's ok," He walked over to her, reaching out a hand to help her up, if she'd take it. "As long as you're ok, that's all that matters, right?" He smiled. Sometimes those helped. He hoped it'd help. Please don't let her cry.

"But it's not!" She wailed. "I nearly hurt you as well! And your clothes are all dirty and you've got a scratch on your chin and-and--" She sniffled, tears starting to run down her face. She'd never hurt anyone before, ever, and it was an awful feeling.

He felt his nerves twitch at the sight of the tears. So he hadn't managed to stop her from falling apart...and he didn't know how to put her back together again. His mind was panicked and his smile was starting to show it. He honestly had no idea what to do. Nada. Zip. It actually made him a little angry, more at himself than at her. He wasn't used to not having an answer for something.
"I get dirty all the time...and scratches all the time. I build things, remember? Please don't cry...I'm fine. And you're ok too. So please don't cry." Maybe if he said it over and over she'd stop.

"Really? You're really okay?" She sounded suspicious, as though it was the sort of thing he'd lie about.

"I promise," Jamie breathed, feeling a slight twinge of relief that she seemed to be calming down. He rubbed the back of his head a little, his fingers brushing through his massive amount of hair before he offered her his hand again. "Need help getting up?" Please let that be the end of the tears. Please.

Luckily for Jamie, the tears seemed to have subsided for now. With a watery smile, Maddy nodded to answer his question and held out her hand to let him help her.
"Thank you," she said, a bit contrite about all the theatrics now that it seemed like he wasn't in any danger - not that she wouldn't do the same thing all over again, of course.

He pulled her up. It was funny, but now that things seemed to be better he could feel how tense and shaken he'd been. It was over now. That was good.
"Do you want to stop?" He asked uncertainly. If that was going to happen every time she or he fell over...well, maybe it was time to take it easy. He didn't think he could take another session of weeping. Who knew if he'd be able to stop it at all if it happened again.
