“I am fine.” Snowpeak said clearly stepping away from his minder with a cold expression, Noctus forbid if he was to show any weakness in front of someone other than Typhoon. Still, he knew the ghost female was a hunting teacher and that did put her above most of the sentinels at the enclave as far as the young mist was concerned. He wanted to tell her something and at the same time found himself unwilling to speak, mulling over dark thoughts in silence.

“What did you think of the decision?” he asks abruptly almost defiantly and as his fiery gaze drops on the teacher there is no possible way to misinterpret his intention: he is blatantly testing Highfog.

As he watched the condemnation of the two ex-mates, Emery felt his stomach churn. He had once admired Bushfire so much...once he would have given anything to be by her side. But he had never imagined she could do such a monstrous act as this, the murder of her own chick! Emery was not Rosso--he didn't believe Bushfire to be just another of the 'gentler' female gender. No, Bushfire was strong...there was no way Basil, the deadbeat coward, could have done this without her consent. And with that terrible knowledge in mind, Emery closed his heart to Bushfire.

Her territory would be empty soon, but he no longer cared. She was nothing but another Sentinel to him now.

As far as Birch was concerned he had arrived just in time. He flew in almost at the same time as the Lawspeaker landed in fact. Other Sentinels would probably consider it "late" however, as most of the good spots were already taken. After some scouting he found a free perch next to a mist female and landed there, bells jingling cheerfully.

Recently he had avoided public gatherings to sulk and nurse the wounds from the fight with Bracken. He needed to grow out some missing feathers and his ego was still bruised, but an event like this was too important to miss. It would be the talk of the forest for weeks so it would be truly embarrassing not to have any first hand information. He quickly scanned the crowd for other bards and noted (rather smugly) that Wicker didn't seem to be among his colleagues in the audience. That female could be incredibly annoying.

It was a horrible story of course, and Birch was glad that these two criminals were punished for it. Birch found himself mesmerised by Rosso and the way he played his audience. The Lawspeaker had allowed the tension to build, withholding information to reveal it all after a dramatic build up. An aberrant chick. Really? And those two must be Wildtypes of the purebred variety since he talked about their families.

"He's good," he mumbled.

Bushfire made sure to keep her gaze on Rosso rather than on the onlooking sentinels. She comforted herself knowing that she'd not been the one to physically kill the chick, however, even that comfort was minimal in the face of their crimes. She knew that. Yet she couldn't help but use those thoughts as an excuse; otherwise, she wouldn't have been able to live with herself.

Nodding once more as the Lawspeaker finished talking, she saw the way Fiercefire flew to join them out the corner of an eye. Despite the fact her gaze narrowed down a notch, as if confused as to why the Mist would risk getting herself and Basil into more trouble than they already were (not to mention publicly show the fact they were a mismatched type couple), she otherwise ignored them.

Rather than voice or say anything, the Forager endured the shame and waited to be dismissed, instead focusing her thoughts on the future. The fact she had been sentenced to ship her quota over to the enclave meant she was going to have to seek out a Watcher to fly it over there from her territory for her, or otherwise find a Hunter to help her look after it while she traveled to and fro. Emery's thoughts couldn't have been further from the truth; Bushfire was not only NOT going to abandon her territory, but the punishment meant she was going to have to take extra care of it if she wanted to meet the quota and pass this punishment-test with flying colors.

Now, she just needed a bit of help and a lot of patience.

Minke sat, somewhat queasily, through the remainder of the speeches, hunkered next to Birch and serving as a prime example of the Lawspeaker's prowess - he had garnered her rapt attention, complete with gasps and outcries at the appropriate pauses. When the show ended, she shuffled awkwardly, imagining malformed chicks, and turned to ask Birch if he'd ever seen such an aberrant - but, oh falling owls! Minke went straight back into gawk-mode, puzzling at the bell-decked and impossibly gendered bard in open-beaked silence. Apparently...this sort of play on appearance didn't happen Up North.

Birch was not really noticing Minke's confused gawking. People looked at bards, it was only natural, and he was used to it by now. His three rows of gender spots could be a head turner and a conversation starter, and he still found the idea of it hilarious. Who had three rows of gender spots? Birch, and only Birch.

Fiercefire entering the scene was unexpected, and it was interesting enough to shift Birch's focus from the impressive Lawspeaker to this new female. Normally the exciting part was over when the Lawspeaker had announced every detail about the shameful act. But now this female perched in the tree of shame next to the crafter. Why would she do that unless she wanted to share the blame? Was it a Minder or Watcher who felt she should have stepped in sooner to prevent all this? Was this a different criminal to be judged? Birch's imagination soared and he didn't know if he really wanted an answer or if he'd rather make one up.

"Huh, look at that," he said and then turned to Minke, "Do you know the female over there?"

It was a bit far fetched, but Minke was the closest Mist around and she might just know something about this. By now Birch's size voice and body language should make it fairly obvious that he was a male. Just a weirdly painted one...

The ugly realisation set in as Rosso announced the crime. Silverbirch watched Dodger's reaction (and eventual) retreat, sighing inwardly. Casting a final glance at the pair of wildtypes, the mist shook her head and took off into the night herself.

There was nothing more for her to see. Might as well get going, she still had a delivery to make.

Being no fool, Highfog would have been shocked hadn’t Snowpeak even tried to know her reaction. She gave her chest feathers a quick preening and her yellow eyes, maternal and confident, met the Mist’s. “Let’s think about this punishment”, she started telling him,” this despicable individual will have to deal with hatchlings for the rest of his life, unless fate pities us all and frees him. He will be surrounded by the painful memories of his crime.”
Her eartufts rose slightly. “This very sight will be a torture, for he is either guilty, or hateful against the poor darlings. As the saying goes, “It is more difficult to live among the Spectres than fighting them”. He will suffer until he learns to love young members of the clan for their potential, and not for their appearance. Since his pain will stop when he redeems himself eventually, I deem it a just judgment.”
Did she believe everything she just said? She hoped she did. But it will take some time for these statements to sink in.
Fog relieved the pressure with more spontaneous speech: “Also, the other part of his punishment is the public shame, and I sure hope I won’t be the only one to remember this duty! I will try to keep an eye on him nonetheless. I assure you I can put in one’s skull many more things than hunting lessons.”
Imagination would do the rest on the precise definition of “more things”.

Typhoon nodded along with Highfog's words. He agreed whole heartedly, but he wondered if this would be a real punishment for the Sentinel. Did he feel guilty? Did he hate his fledgling? What drove him to this? If nothing else, at least he would be working hard. He tried to not chortle at the other Sentinel's threat. It didn't need to come down to that.

"I will also be checking in on him, since I'd like to look into this new Enclave myself. See if I can help out at all. We could go together, Snowpeak." He spoke half to Highfog and half to Snowpeak. Even Ty wasn't fool enough to notice Snowpeak was moving beyond his caring. If he remembered correctly, this other Sentinel was a teacher, specifically for hunting and such. Her name teased at his beak, and so he avoided calling her by her name.

With the exception of a rough sneer as the teacher started talking and a smirk as Highfog said the word “despicable”, the large fledgling remained still and thoughtful as she spoke. The teacher brought a new notion to him, something he hadn’t considered before. Could that wildtype really not be aware of what he had done? He arranged his thoughts in silence as his expression softened a little and he couldn’t help but to smile as he considered the idea of the female teaching an adult.

“It’s clear to me. What he did was wrong. I don’t understand how he failed to see that.” He said slowly, keeping his eyes on Basil once again. “Understanding what he did… to his own son… is it really enough?”

His eartufts twitched as his minder spoke but he did not turn to face him.

“I won’t go, Typhoon.” He said coldly. “I’m almost graduating and I’ll be going to the cold region soon. If I were to meet that sentinel there, I don’t think I’d be able to control myself. Being face to face with him… I don’t think I’d even give him a proper warning” … not that he deserves one anyway.

Though he sounded almost detached throughout his words, reminding Typhoon that they’d soon part their ways out loud brought an intense feeling of sorrow to his expression and the small mist took an unwilling step towards the larger ghost.

"I don't want to be here, anymore..."

Typhoon accepted Snowpeak's answer gracefully with another nod, but his wings pressed tight against his body as his charge reminded him that he would be gone soon. As the young mist turned, Ty fluffed out his feathers, preening for the flight back. He didn't want Snowpeak to see that he would miss him, the little brat. Snowpeak would see that as a sign of weakness, it was just his way.

And Ty knew it was better to not let fledglings see the pain that Minders went through when their charges graduated and left those who had cared for them up until this point. He hoped Snowpeak would remember him, and that was really all he could ask as a Minder. He'd have to find a new fluff to take care of or visit some other Minders, because wallowing in sorrow was unacceptable.

The Ghost preened one last feather and said with a smile, "Right, right, of course Snowpeak. Nice to meet you, Miss. Perhaps we'll meet again soon."

He hopped over to a clearer branch, not wanting to bother Highfog with his take off, and glanced once behind him for Snowpeak to follow before starting a low glide through the branches. Ty knew Snowpeak's flight skills weren't excellent yet, and if he stayed close to the branches there was less of a chance of the Mist falling.

As Ty greeted her, Fog bowed down respectfully. “Nice to meet you too, sir”, she replied. She was glad Snowpeak’s Minder didn’t give his opinion on the subject, as she would have had trouble defending her attempt at a neutral point of view. She watched them go.
The Teacher hadn’t seen much of the fledgling in comparison with her usual students, but it was always heart-breaking to a small degree to see kids start living on their own. Maybe one day, she will meet Snowpeak again, and remember with nostalgia this day, where she shared a small piece of wisdom with him. Such recollections weren’t uncommon, and it always held regrets afterwards.
Her lowered eartufts suddenly rose back, vertically. Oh, come on, there’s nothing more heart-warming than knowing your teachings didn’t fall into deaf ears! Damn it, her mood wasn’t so depressing, usually. She needed to unleash her feelings unto something. Otherwise very aloof in her stance, her talons tightened their grip on the branch, and scraped a negligible surface until it revealed the fresh, light wood underneath.

As the Lawspeaker delves into the final aspects of the sorry pair's crimes, the young murderer's diminutive form turns strangely placid, with any obvious outward signs of attentiveness abandoned. Basil is lost, leagues away in thought. It is done. At long last, it is finally over.

That's not to say he's relieved, far from it. He's terrified of what's yet to come. The rumors are at an end now, with the majority proved true. His family would be sure to avoid him all the more so now, the damage to their collective reputation as irrevocably great as it is. Who could, or even would, help him learn the skills he would need to fulfill the terms of his sentence? Conventional crafts-workers were clearly out of the question... Blackbirch... Augh! Facing him after what he was doing to Fi would be impossible! If there was any mercy left for him within the forest, maybe he'd be relegated into someone else's tutelage. Basil silently thanks the stars above Fi isn't here to see this...

... and suddenly, there she is, flying towards him from amidst the crowd! Noctus, have mercy, turn my wings to stone! Let me die where I stand! He was filthy, plucked bare by her presence. He swore he could feel the stabs of every pair of hateful eyes looking down on him from above. This... his sentence was nothing in the face on this new torture. How could she be here? Why?!

Snowpeak was rather thankful that Typhoon took his desire to leave so seriously and promptly preened a few flight feathers automatically before he started following the minder. However there was something stopping him and the mist fledgling felt that he was somehow unable to leave so quickly. Quite suddenly, he hopped between a few thick branches and tried to get a little closer to the tree of shame, moving more carefully than usual to make sure he didn’t make a fool of himself. Shouting some cold words at Basil, though not something he didn’t seriously consider inside his head (oh, the various scenarios he played in silence…!), seemed slightly undignified and the wildtype wasn’t even worth getting all worked up anyway.

Well aware that the white plumage turned him into a beacon of light in the pale moonlight, he still let out a hoot as reproachful as he could make it sound and clacked his beak twice in Basil’s direction as his feathers sleeked. He glared at the male wildtype as if he was the only one on the naked branch with a low hiss escaping his beak.

So what if most of the sentinels would probably look at him as an inexperienced brat who didn’t have the right to express his opinion? From his point of view he was already much better than the dim-witted adults who were openly sympathizing with the murderer. His only regret was that Typhoon might feel embarrassed by his actions. He’d probably never see Basil again considering how their futures were set in opposite areas of Noctua but he did humor a few mischievous thoughts of what could happen if they did somehow meet and Snowpeak had to resort to all his willpower to restrain a grin.

The white fledgling kept his expression grave as he slowly moved towards his minder once again, stopping abruptly next to the teacher just to nod her a quick goodbye (a sign that some of Typhoon’s teachings hadn’t really fall into deaf ears) before he finally started following the minder. He could almost swear he had caught a glimpse of a sentinel very similar to Moonstride as he was leaving but he ignored it, taking his impression for a mistake. Snowpeak did wonder however what the Elite would think had she seen him tonight, watching what he had become. Would she approve… had he been worth the trouble? He was a little distant as he juggled the new ideas in his head and the mist he flew away with small glides chasing after the ghost minder.

Through all the bustling and gabbing from the branches below perched a large and dark form, alienated from the busy group only by a couple of feet farther up amongst the branches. It was silent and stood ever still all throughout the Lawspeaker's show and the time for gossip; there is no need to give in to such selfish reflexes.

However, can Blackbirch blame them? It was certainly a crime to be told, the murder of your own blood, let alone kind. And for what? A single, imperfect soul? Most of crowd here should feel ashamed for verbally attacking Basil, as all he ever did was do the exact thing that their own prejudice longs for. Filthy hypocrites, he thought to himself.

He found himself musing back when he met Breeze, not too many nights ago. He hadn't believed her when she mentioned a different history of Basil's, and now, right before him, is the truth all laid out for him to see. There is no room for denial tonight. What a shame, he would have made an excellent apprentice, even if he lacked self-confidence.

And he would have left both the idea of an underling and himself physically from the platforms just then, if he hadn't noticed a flurry of pale feathers suddenly appear from the crowd and perched herself beside the one who was, or perhaps still is, her mate. An eyebrow ridge raised in surprise: she still supported him, even after all of this?

Shuffling his wings together, he decided that he would stay for a little while longer. What could that girl be up to...
