Sage Leander

PostPosted: Wed Dec 17, 2008 3:05 pm

Leander's eyes widened...

He gasped sharply in pain, holding Nino tighter, bringing his hand to his temple as images and names began to rush into his skull, mashing together and blocking out all else. He shut his eyes tight, swaying a bit as his head throbbed and his mind reeled at the torrential assault of information.

One voice rang like a crystal bell above the rest:

'In the absence of order, chaos reigns. While the king sleeps, his enemies creep into his land. The cat has many playful mice to kill when he returns from his long journey.'

A ringing sound, and suddenly Leander's mind was clear and free of distraction. He opened his eyes and looked down at the people far below, his enemies, who had taken his kingdom in his absence, who raped and defiled his land. He clutched his tome and staff to his chest for a moment, then growled, "Thou villains and curs, begone from my kingdom or fall where thou stand! None shall move me from power until the day I have shed this body!" His voice, amplified by the magic that coursed through him, boomed across the courtyard, and suddenly There was a powerful flash and both he and Nino disappeared into the castle. This ice pillar on which they had stood fell to block the entrance to the castle.

Yes, it could be moved, but through all this, the dogs had not stopped their assault to take interest in King Leander. Now, the remaining twelve Mauthe Doogs and their Cerberus leader stood between the citizens of FEF and the entrance to the castle, snarling at the nomad, priest, and their comrades.

Their slavering maws and misting breath seemed to give them an aura of ferocity and intimidation that hadn't been seen from them before. With the cracking of the ice and the toppling of the frozen crag, it was a matter of moments before they leaped forward, the alpha already engaged with Sue.

Though it squealed as it fell, the loss of the leader did not immediately register. Even despite its death, several of them moved towards one they knew was vulnerable- a woman with a swollen belly and a sword held up, awkward now due to her changed sense of balance. The blood of the mother and child would no doubt nourish them for days.

With a snarl, the first of them leaped towards her...

Aran saw Sue and Rhys, and decided to make his way to them. He punched away a dog that tried to pin him, and sent many others away with wounds or broken bones, Aran felt it was perfect training for him. He saw Sue take out the Alpha Cerberus, well it looked dead to him, and he said to them, "Sue, do you know what's going on? As he blocked a pair of fangs with his Lance.

"Rhys! Sue!" Blossom shouted. She ran rapidly into the courtyard of the castle, looking around wildly. There were huge skeleton-like dogs everywhere, all covered in matted, dirty fur. She gripped her 'borrowed' Iron Sword tightly and looked over at Sue and Rhys and Aran, who seemed to also be aiding them in the fight.

"Nino got t-taken?" she shouted over to Sue in astonishment. She pulled a defensive stance and stood before Sue, watching the dogs warily.

Amelia was close at Blossom's heels, having heard the news from a distance back at the lake, but needing to get her armor caused her to arrive some minutes after the tiny mercenary. Amelia soon was where the others stood, gripping her lance tightly enough to make her knuckles sore.

"Fill me in!" she shouted breathlessly. A canine lunged at her, and she threw her lance, spearing it through his flank. She jerked on the rope tied to the end, which ripped the lance right out of his flesh and back to her hand.

He could have sworn there was another entrance into the castle, but Soren sighted no such thing. All stray entrances had been blocked up. To top it off, the ice pillar which Nino and their regal guest once used as a stage had collapsed, barricading the gates to the castle. It was best not to ignore the thirteen creatures which paced hungrily before the defenders as well.

The mage winced, recognizing exactly who was under attack at the moment. She was in no condition to fight! The hawk king would surely tear down upon the attackers if he witnessed this. But Soren saw no glimpse of the hawk king's bulk anywhere, and Soren remained unarmed.

He quickly shifted through his mind for any strategies, any tactics he would employ for himself or the others. The landscape was lacking in terrain advantage. They were faced off against creatures driven by instinct and reflex, formidable foes that were painful to deal with. Even if he could act as a distraction, the creatures would outrun him and rip him to shreds in a flash. That was one foolish strategy crossed out.

Soren breathed calmly, feeling his breath emerge warm once more now that their guest had vanished. Yet Nino may well be in danger.

Soren shook his head. Curse my prayers, he repeated in his mind, keeping himself hidden behind a drapery. Soren explored the area with his eyes, wondering if there was anything nearby he could use. The most he recognized were the invaders, the defenders, the snow-smothered streets, and a wooden cart at the head of a slight hill.

That was ridiculous. A wooden cart would do little to scatter these foes, and that hill's incline would not provide nearly enough. The hill would have been useful had the mage been in possession of a tome. He was in no position to attempt magic without tomes either — that required too much effort in itself.

He snapped back to his immediate surroundings, a snowflake landing on his nose and drawing his attention to a Mauthe Doog that had sniffed him out. The creature bounded forward, fangs bare, muscles pumping with adrenaline, throat trembling with a low growl. The beast dashed at him so quickly that Soren himself acted on instinct.

Soren tore the flag from the wall. As the Mauthe Doog launched itself at his throat, Soren gripped the drapery with both hands and slammed the cloth across the creature's head, effectively throwing it into the wall right beside him. He let the cloth fall from his hands. The creature flailed and roared, tangled in the drapery, thrashing and biting at that which blinded the beast. Soren panted from the startle, dropping to his knees and attempting to restrain the beast with the cloth, mostly around its snapping jaw. He winced as its claw managed to scrape his cheek. Its talons caught onto his robes, its paws clumsily but furiously swinging.

Impatient and seeing no other course of action, Soren whacked the blind beast across the snout with his journal. The creature let off a yelp, alerting two Mauthe Doogs that had heard its cry.

He did not notice the creatures as he struck the beast across the jaw again, then stuffed the stunned beast's face into the snow with the drapery. As he did, Soren glimpsed the two Mauthe Doogs with their wicked eyes fixed on him. The creature underneath the cloth ceased its movements, giving him a moment of relief. But when it resumed thrashing the mage sent his journal flying across its skull.

Soren cursed the stars as the two Mauthe Doogs bounded across the snow toward him. He punched the creature beneath the drapery out of anger, his fist landing against its rib with surprising effect. It was then Soren realized these creatures were not hardy at all.

"Aran... Amelia... Blossom..." Sue smiled with relief to see all of them had come as reinforcements. "That sage took Nino... we have to free her! Again.. FEF castle has fallen to another... hm. Let's talk later."

The nomad raised her killing edge, whispering something to her mount. The horse nieghed, and then they sped forward faster than usual, Sue striking heavily to try and get the horde of Mauthe Doogs off her group. All the while, everyone was still defending Rhys's patients.

She'd been cornered. It was stupid of her to go back- even if her shirt was still cold and wet from her hawk partner's jesting- and still think she was capable of defending herself. Though her sword was in her hand and she had tried to assume her normal battle stance, the odd sense of alarm that ran through her whenever she tried to think of all of her evasion tactics was distracting. Her mind and instincts kept turning back to the child. Ayra couldn't risk the health of her unborn, and the snarling beasts knew it.

"Curs!" When she saw the first of the maned wolves leap towards her, she swept her sword out from muscle memory alone, but felt her heart skip a beat when she felt a pain move through her abdomen. The sheer exertion of her arm arcing the blade, driving it through the beast's neck- even a movement as simple as that had sent alarms running through her body. Moving her other hand to her belly, she stayed back, keeping her balance as best as she could while eying the nomad and soldier in the distance. They were too far- while an arrow may have been able to make it, the toss of a javelin would fall short.

And yelling would only incite more attacks.

Turning her eyes to where she hoped her laguz lover was, she took a dagger from her belt and threw it into the air. The sheen and luster of the steel caught the cold winter's light, and would serve as a marker, at the very least. And with Tibarn's eyes... well. If he didn't see it, she hoped someone would.

"Away from me!" Though she couldn't risk another all-out strike, even as her foe lay stiffly in the snow, Ayra still retained as much of her intimidation as she could possibly muster, keeping the blade before her and between her body and the hungry beasts that stared at her. At the very least, they stayed back, though they still snarled at her, teeth bared and speckles of drool dripping into the snow.

They didn't stay back far, however- just far enough to stay out of reach of her blade. And with a sense of alarm, she quickly realized that if more than one was to attack at once...

She would not get out unscathed.

"A... dagger?" Sue had noticed it... her senses were a lot more keen than the rest.

She turned into the direction of it, and again, went dashing madly. Despite being weary... the nomad trooper rode on without stopping, aiming her bow towards the beasts surrounding someone she couldn't see yet.

One of her shots, that of her short bow was dead on. She wondered if it would draw them away. "Over here!" she shouted.

"Right!" Amelia shouted. She lifted her spear to ward off the snapping jaws of a Mauthe Doog and braced herself against the attack. His frame was thin and looked like a well-placed steel boot could crush through its spine, but their strength was deceptive. She managed to throw the beast away and huffed out a breath, the exhale shifting into a faint white cloud in the cold air. She stuck near Rhys and his patients, acting as a defense.

Blossom, meanwhile, ran along with Sue, not minding the fact that she wasn't able to fully keep up. She leaped at a creature close by and slashed at his face. A swipe of claws made her leap back and reevaluate her strategy. Gotta take more defensive, she thought as the scrape on her cheek bled just a little.

Ayra's shouts, however, got rid of her ideas of moving defensively. Get them away from her! "Sue! Could you rescue her?" she shouted to the nomad. "Get her on horseback and run her away? Can you move faster than them?"

Sue's blue eyes stared in the direction of Blossom, nodding. "Me and my mount can make it to the Lake. There's too many of us there... these monsters wouldn't dare try and swarm a large group like that. Cover me."

Once again drawing out the killing edge, slinging her bow over her shoulder, Sue rode forward, into the middle of the Mauthe Doogs, and pulled Arya up on her mount, despite any protest the swordmaster might have had. "I'm getting you out of here, Arya... I would never know what to say to Tibarn... please understand. You will be safe..."

"And you too... Soren... I'll be back for you." Sue thought as she rode on, not once forgetting her Sage friend was still knocked out, being protected by the others she left behind. "Looks like once again... we'll be hiding out in FEFGA's house, won't we?"
PostPosted: Wed Dec 17, 2008 3:59 pm

Tibarn's cry, the unearthly, enraged screech of a bird of prey, cleaved in twain the sounds of snarling wolves. There was no way they could be distracted from their easy prey by Sue, no... they ignored her minor threat, and two instead leaped at Ayra, claws bared, jaws open.

A rush of wind passed over Ayra as her lover, faster in the air than any earthbound creature could match, snatched a beast in each talon mid-jump, and slammed them both to the ground, crushing and snapping their necks as he turned and glared at the others. He spread his wings wide, puffing up his body and screeching again as he hopped toward them on bloodstained talons.

The two remaining decided they could find easier prey back by Sue, and bolted.

A second later, Tibarn resumed his laguz form and ran to Ayra's side to support her. "Baby, oh, goddess, tell me you're alright..." Despite the freshly falling snow, Tibarn immediately removed his heavy, warm coat and wrapped it around Ayra, leaving his muscular upper body exposed to the cold. "Come on, hon," he murmured, glancing back at the three dead dogs. "Let's get you inside somewhere, it's not safe..." Whether or not she chose to protest, he immediately began to usher her toward the nearest house.

Blossom looked back at the Mauthe Doogs and rushed into the fray alongside Sue. She swept her sword in a wide arc to try to ward them away, and when she looked back up, Tibarn had dove down and taken out at least two of the Doogs, carrying Ayra away to safety.

A ripping snarl near her left ear brought Blossom back to reality. Fight. Fight. Blossom narrowly managed to dive down and avoid a lunging attack aimed at her face, skidding her pants leg on the ground in the process. Would've meant quite the scrape if not for the pants, she thought as she pulled herself up, barely swiping her sword out to ward off an attack before another Doog could bite her shoulder.

"What is this? Have you gotten in trouble once again?" A momentary shimmer could be seen in the courtyard, the trademark of a Warp staff, and a moment later, in its place, a familiar bishop stood, though with a kind smile and. . . wearing all read and white, with an odd cloak over all. "Come now, children. . . it seems I will be needed to save you once again." The incident of a couple months earlier had not been forgotten; however, Renault had forgiven it and no longer worried about it.

One glance around showed the most pressing problem; that of Soren, who seemed to be defenseless at the moment; or so it seemed, as Renault doubted that he would be punching enemies if he were able to do anything else. One hand came up, holding an ornately decorated book; and a bolt of light shone through the clouds, piercing the creature as it writhed and screamed, then disintegrated into a puff of dust. The other paused, now given cause to worry, having just witnessed the death of its partner. "Soren. To me," the bishop spoke, gesturing with his free hand. "I will protect you for now."

((Mauthe Doogs count is seven now, if I'm correct.))

The Scripts of Strategy

With the first beast still thrashing under the covers, Soren stumbled away from the two that were advancing on him. He could do little to stave them off as one leapt upon him, the other barking and snapping its jaws at his heels. Soren guarded himself with his arm and let off a cry of pain as teeth clamped down. A second set of fangs seized his ankle and the beast yanked back, pulling the mage to the ground.

Soren howled as teeth and fang ravaged his arms, which so desperately tried to shield the rest of his body. Blood seeped into his once pure-white robes, tarnishing the snow around him. He thrashed blindly at them, wondering why he was alone in this fight.

And then a light covered all in brightness. A shriek split the air around Soren and the other Mauthe Doogs quickly glanced up, away from their prey, toward a man garbed in red and white. Soren ceased fighting and he blinked spots out of his vision. He breathed heavily and attempted to collect his thoughts. For some reason, the beasts had stopped eating him alive.

Then the young scholar glanced up and he understood. Father Renault had spotted him and was kind enough to lend a hand.

Soren silently thanked the goddess and Elimine as a precaution, throwing the perplexed Mauthe Doogs off of himself. He groaned loudly when he realized the condition his arms were in. The beasts barked and clawed once more at his robes, attempting to drag him down, but this time Soren pulled away toward Renault as he hugged his journal to himself. One pair of fangs seized his ankle again and Soren collapsed to his knee. The evidence of blood had drawn a faint trail to the mage.
