I'm so sorry, please. I'm a rabbit, I'm the least important creature in this forest!" Vel babbled. She was talking to cover up that she was even more scared of the lynx then it was of her.

Elsie was calming a bit. This creature seemed nice. She obviously did not recognize the species she had eaten so many times with Zare. " Elsie?!" Zare called urgently into the undergrowth has he raced along. He looked frantically for the kit.

Vel kept talking. It seemed to be working. "I'm Velvet. Vel, Ash out there calls me. He may be big, but he's really a pacifist, and he's really good at telling stories!"

Elsie was now back to her normal self, and was ignoring the fact that they were still extremely close to the mountain lion. " Your name's Velvet? Hiya, Velvet! I'm Elsie!" she grinned happily. Making friends brought her joy. Zare whined in annoyance and desperation. His lynx was nowhere to be seen! He was still following her scent, till he smelled a familiar one. Mountain lion. Plus a coyote was in the mix. His first and only assumption was that they were fighting over who gets the kill." NO!" He charged forward, ready to fight for Elsie if anything else. He was coming from behind the coyote.

Ash's nose twitched, and he twisted in time to see Zare{{who's a wolf, right?}} charging him. "Oh... I hate fights." He murmured, and darted out of the way. In the bush Vel jumped. "Nice to meet you, Elise.... Is that your wolf, he's awfully loud."

Zare was surprised at the coyote's dodge. He was now face-to-face with the mountain lion. His fur bristled and he started to pull back his lips to snarl a warning, but stopped himself. If he could avoid a fight, then he would. ' Caught in another tight spot. Twice in two days, now,' he thought, feeling his nerves tingling with nervousness. Elsie's safety was becoming a problem. He watched the coyote out of the corner of his eye, and kept his defensive-yet-daring stance. He was giving them a chance to stay away while he collected his bundle. " El!" he whined between his teeth. He was just about to lose it over this lynx. Elsie's ears perked up at Zare's familiar growly voice. She had been waiting to here it, anticipating the encounter. She grinned happily at Vel. " Yep! He found me! Velvet, I want you to meet Zare! He's really nice!" she was ignoring the fact that Zare was not like her. The wolf only thought of rabbits as food. Plus, he still could not see the cub, and her voice coming from apparently nowhere was freaking him out. He lost stance, and had stood up straight, eyes wide, searching desperately for the feline. He could be heard calling for Elsie again. He was starting to make circles through the area, ignoring the other two predators, and just worried about finding whatever trace of Elsie he could. Any observers might have dubbed him a lunatic.

Ash watched the wolf carefully. Suddenly, Vel burst out of the bush, and ran directly at the wolf, stopping a few inches away. "Hey!" She cried. "Hey! If you're looking for a lynx, she's in that bush over there!" "Vel!" Ash called. "What are you thinking!?" He tensed, waiting for the wolf to attack his old friend.

" Velvet! Wait up!" cried Elsie, and she rushed after the rabbit, giggling. Zare's fur bristled, and he took a few steps back as a rabbit of all creatures ran at him. The usual signs of challenge to him had clicked in his mind before recognition of common prey. He quelled the start of a growl in his throat, and instead was able to listen to what the rabbit said. The wolf's eyes switched towards where the creature had come from, and relief flooded his mind when he saw his little lynx cub running towards him. He grinned wolfishly. " Brother!!!" the kit squealed happily, and she jumped at Zare playfully to say sorry. Elsie landed on his leg, and purred as she rubbed her head against it. Zare crouched to greet the little cat, and he licked the top of her head joyously. " Don't ever run off like that again, Ell!" he said with a hint of anger. He ignored the presence of the coyote and lion, just glad that Elsie was back with him. Zare nuzzled her furry body with his nose.

Vel sat cheerfully, until she felt Ash gently tug at her ear with his teeth, and she backed up some. "You worry too much." She whispered. "El said he was really nice!" "And you are food to him." The coyote told her softly. "You're food to me, but I know better. I am not going to loose you, Velvet of the Trickster." He nuzzled the top of her head, quoting. "'You'll be my favorite creature and here's the reason why. Your eyes are bright, your feet are swift, your ears hear round the bend, and your very simple humbleness will steal the heart of man. And when time comes and men forget the lessons animals render, will be the humble rabbit, that mankind will remember.'"

Zare sat down and allowed Elsie to scramble up his back. She hung over his shoulder and giggled, while he peered at her out of the corner of his eye. " Why'd you run off like that, El? You really scared me," he said, and the kit gave him a phony I-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about look. " I did?" she grinned evilly then continued, " I just got a little bored!" " Brat!" Zare barked, only slightly annoyed, and licked her nose. The lynx slid off the wolf's shoulder and tumbled to the ground, giggling even more. Elsie rolled over onto her paws and bounced over to Velvet and Ash, Zare watching her carefully from where he sat. " Hiyas, Velvet! Is this Ash?" she grinned at the coyote, craning her neck so she could see his face. She had run over too late to hear what Ash had said to the rabbit. Zare kept his gaze locked onto Elsie, the rabbit, and the coyote, making sure the lynx wouldn't disappear again. He couldn't help but think of the resemblances between him and the coyote, especially that both canines had a companion that would usually be considered prey. He made a mental note to make sure any rabbits he hunted weren't that one, because now that Elsie had met it, she'd have a tantrum if he brought it back for a meal.

"Yes. Ash, this is Elsie." Vel told her friend. Then she lowered her voice, and whispered quickly. "'Coyote my friend, together we'll spin many a tale at night, and show man by our naughtiness what really should be right.'" {{El can hear that if she wants. In fact, it would start a plot.}}

[[ Heehee, that sounds fun! By and by, what happened to River?]]
Elsie's ears perked up as she listened closely to what Velvet had whispered. She knew it hadn't been for her to hear, but curiosity killed the lynx! The word naughtiness really caught her attention, and she couldn't help but ask. " Naughtiness? Oooh, are you going to do something bad? Can I come along, too?" she hushed her voice so Zare couldn't hear, he'd be mad if he heard El ask something like that. Zare watched the lynx kit suspiciously as she whispered to the rabbit. Knowing Elsie, she was plotting something, most likely to annoy some poor creature. He was tempted to walk over and join the conversation, but was content with shifting so he could sit facing towards the little group. ' Whatever it is they're scheming, let them scheme, says me,' thought the wolf. He'd bug Elsie into telling him at some point, anyways. There was no secret El could keep that Zare couldn't find out.

{She quit.} "OH!" Vel jumped. "It-it's just a quote from an old story! Ash! Tell it!" Ash sighed, and sat beneath a tree. "Trickster came a'calling To find a totem here To teach the foolish heart of man Without installing fear. Many came and many went And still the Trickster paused; Bear and Cat and Tiger tried but had too many claws. Dog and Wolf though wise indeed Had teeth t'were quite a fright And Owl with his tawny eyes could only see at night. "No," the Trickster said at last "Teachers, I see many. But My way is full of laughter and in you I see not any."
But beneath the tree where Eagle sat Coyote told the tale of silly hares cavorting In the old country of Wales. Raven stared unto the sun And Crow sang awful songs And Rabbit sat a'listening With ears so wondrous long.
"Aha!" The Trickster danced a dance Of mirth and vict'ry sweet. He leapt with joy and swooped a swoop And landed at their feet. "Of all here now," the Trickster said "You are the very Beasts!" And Rabbit said, "I'm sorry sir But of all, we are the least."
The Trickster smiled and raised a hand And spoke: "I have a plan The four of you shall help me To teach the heart of Man. Raven with your love of light The Sun you'll steal and soon. For the gift of warmth I give to man To be the greatest boon. And Crow, you silly creature Who sings without a voice, Teach man `bout pride and helping You really have no choice. Coyote my friend, together we'll spin Many a tale at night, And show man by our naughtiness What really should be right."
At last He turned to Rabbit With a twinkle in his eye "You'll be my favorite creature And here's the reason why: Your eyes are bright, your feet are swift Your ears hear round the bend But your very simple humbleness Will steal the heart of men. Together we shall thwart the pains The gods do throw to earth And turn aside their fiery darts With merriment and mirth. And when time comes that men forget The lessons animals render T'will be the humble rabbit That mankind will remember."
And round the Trickster the animals thronged The birds and all the beasts And humbly bowed to the king they found, who thought himself "the least."

[[ You've got to be kidding me. Who's running the Guild, now?
Elsie managed to stay quiet all throughout the story. She was watching Ash with wondrous eyes. She'd never heard a tale quite like that. It sparked her imagination, and she could almost see all the animals sitting around to listen. She grinned happily. " Oh, that's so cool! But, where are the lynxes?" A typical child's question. But she didn't care.

"They aren't mentioned." Ash says calmly. His voice sounds distant, and his eyes a far away. "Yes... Nightshade, Torwen... Where are you...?" Vel murmurs, as if in a dream.
