Exactly.. we show the other "sports" or rather athletics teams respect and yet we get none returned... I don't care whether they call it sports or not.. I just don't like it when they diss it because that is a general public reaction to it.. Why is that the general reaction to it anyway question

We had a TEACHER at my high school who said band is not a sport because we dont sweet, compete, or bleed.

1. We dont sweet (sweat? I dunno. I feel so stupid. I think its sweet. Oh well, I waste all my time in band.)

2. We dont compete.

3. We don't bleed.

Heres my reply for him -->

1. Even WALKING across the parking lot at noon in the middle of the summer is enough to make you work up a sweet (sweat?). And we're out ther MARCHING on it for 3-9 hrs (depending. Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.)

2. Dont compete? That one is just plain stupid! What about, I dont know, to name some of ours, Jeffco, Douglas County Invitational, Pomona COMPETITION (See, competition is even in the name,) Metro Regionals, Quarter Finals, State Semis and Finals. What are those, a stroll in the park?

3. I hit my horn on the back of a clarinets head with my trumpet durning practice one day. Not only did I chip my tooth (OWW!) but I sliced my lip open (double OWWW). And I had a COMPETITION the next day, WITH a solo. Needless to say, playing brass is not fun with a sliced, bruised lip. My solo sucked (and thats saying it nicely.)

Boy, I had fun telling my teacher all this stuff. until he got mad at me and sent me to the office for back talking (luckily, I only got a warning)

Gerbil, I have to say that without a doubt, that was an amazing post. I had thought mine would blow them away but yours kicked my a**...to be honest. I was quite proud of it actually. It's a bit too bad that they wouldn't understand..simply because they refuse to.

They never truly understand until they're in marching band. For them (the football players that generally think the marching band is just completely simplistic and way below the belt and those who look down on the band because they're always working at something that looks like it could be got down in two minutes) it looks like we're walking in lines playing instruments, but they don't understand half of it. It takes a lot of work to be able to coordinate your step and play your instrument at the same time...and be able to concentrate on both.

Of course, they wouldn't understand unless the previously discussed kidnapping were to take place of those too ignorant to notice that it is a sport. xD

This is what I had to say to them:

Evil Black Swan
Marching Band is OFFICIALY a sport now. A few weeks ago on ESPN (the SPORTS channel) the international drum and bugal corps championship, DCI (Drum Corps International). Drum and Bugal corps and Marching Band are the same God damned thing except Drum and Bugal corps only has brass and drums. There aren't any woodwinds.

If cheerleading, choir and chess are all considered sports, then Marching Band is damn near higher up on the scale than Football and baseball!

Marching Band members practice for hours and hours each DAY to perfect their show. They also have to spend weeks, if not months, on the music they play at the SAME TIME!

Marching Band is MORE physcially demanding than Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, track, cross country, volleyball, wresteling, cheerleading, etc.; and is more mentally demanding than chess, golf, yoga, tai bau, etc...

Anyone who still thinks that Marching Band isn't a sport, watch the halftime show at your football games, go to marching band competitions, TRY OUT marching band to proove that it's "nothing".

Come on, I Dare you.

You have been Dared by the first chair oboe/second chair flute.

I don't think any of you really know me because I haven't been active on this forum that much and don't talk to any of you outside of it, but I think I made a pretty decent argument on there.

I've been in band for almost 5 years now, marching for 4, and such ignorant comments made by people who don't even have great grammar skills really irritate me.

(Especially that tuba comment... I'm a tuba/sousaphone player)

I totally got on that thread and I'm b*tching him out now. Gawd that just pisses me off. Even though I am just a flute player, I sweat during practices!! Think of the sousaphones!!
