"Of course." Delilah paused, looking over Kaimi's head at Prosper. "Unless Mr. Prosper needs me for something?" When he made no comment, she turned her smile back to Kaimi and touched the flower lightly in the other girl's hair. "Please introduce me to your friends," she asked. As she followed Kaimi's motion, though, she nodded suddenly. "Oh, I've met Carlisle already."

"Hi, I'm Maddy," Maddy greeted the new addition with a shy little wave and frantically fluttering wings - she might have gotten better at this socializing thing, but only for kids her own age. Not with older people!

Still, she was (obviously) approved by Kaimi, and so the butterfly girl would do her best not to clam up and run for cover.

Kaimi puffed out her chest a little bit, proud that beautiful Delilah was going to come sit with her and the others! "Maddy and I escaped bad guys in a butterfly garden." Kaimi added after the butterfly girl had introduced herself. "And this is Ophelia. She's good at surfing and taught me about the beach!" Kaimi beamed at both the girls. "And you know Carlisle already." Which was a good thing, since Kaimi barely knew the boy. But she gave him a beaming smile anyways.

Lucien nodded vigorously.

"We can be dinopirates," he said enthusiastically, tilting his head to the left. "Or maybe piratesaurs. And -- and we can have eye patches and walk 'round with our arms like this." He raised his arms and made a clawing motion with his fingers, his wrists limp and his elbows tucked into his chest. With a dorky grin, he made to run after Joshua with a loud "raaarr!".

Joshua ran. "Dinopirates look for tresure!" He told his friend, turning around. "They say 'argh!'" Mommy had told him all about pirates. She always told him stories about them. "Mommy says some pirates are mean. Are we mean?"

Josh didn't know if he could act mean for very long. He'd never tried. "Can we be nice dinopirates?"

"Hello, Delilah," he said, moving a little closer to the counter so as not to get knocked into by any running children. "Hi, Casca, what's up?" Carlisle didn't think that they would be gaining any weight, not really, since everything he'd seen being prepared had some nutritional value. Well, except for the pie. He didn't know about that. Setting down the knife, he brushed off his hands and piled the discarded ends of the beans near the edge of the table.

Ophelia nodded happily and flashed a quick grin around the table. "Maddy and I already know each other," she said, plunking a peeled carrot down on the table and picking up another. "Kaimi, you have to come over and go surfing with me when it gets warm again!"

Something was going to get broken, it was just that Prosper wasn't sure what yet. With two little boys running around, it was only a matter of time. Sighing, he stepped out in front of Lucien and Joshua to stop them from barreling through the kitchen. A moment later, he directed them to the sink.

"Why don't you two wash up?" he suggested. "And I'll give you something to do."

"Tomatoes, apparently, mon ami," said Casca, who was apparently apt to break out in weird and wonderful other languages. But he grinned at Carlisle anyway, showing off some sharp teeth, and deftly cut the last tomato up. "So why do they call it Thanksgiving when it's all about eating, 'Lisle?"

The dark-haired boy grinned brightly. History was his thing, and he had learned some stuff- well, a lot- about Thanksgiving in class. "Thanksgiving is an American holiday that originated with the Plymouth settlers, colloquially" not like he knew what that word meant "called 'pilgrims' because they fled England to escape religious persecution. It was a feast held to celebrate a successful harvest with their Indian neighbors. There were games and stuff. The reason it's called 'Thanksgiving' was because preceding the feast the Pilgrims held a religious ceremony called the Mass of Thanksgiving, so the name carried over." He paused to take a breath as he cleaned off his section of the paper.

"President Abraham Lincoln made it an official holiday in 1863. In 1941, Congress passed a law requiring Thanksgiving to be held on the fourth Thursday of the month of November. So really it was a sorta party-holiday, like Christmas, not really about eating at all. Just, at the time, family dinners were a way to show you were thankful for your family or something, and families were pretty big, so it came to mean lots and lots of food, and it became tradition and now it's all about food. By the way, what does mon ami mean?"

Finished with his miniature lecture, he turned to find Prosper and said, "I'm done cutting up the green beans. What should I do now?"

Cascati laughed out loud; he pushed his hair back out of the way as a stray curl fell over his forehead, taking the time out to tuck it back into the braid lest he infest the Thanksgiving dinner with hair. "Danke, Professor," he said, but not unkindly. "I feel enlightened now. And it wasn't even boring like... normal history class is. Who'd have thought? -- and mon ami is Francais, that's French, for my friend. 'Cause aren't you, after all, my ami?"

He finished his own prep. "Tomatoes are done too," he told Prosper.

Lucien skidded to a halt, careful to avoid colliding with anyone or anything, and tilted his head to the side.

"Okay, we can be nice dinopirates. And we can steal from the rich and give to the poor, like Robin Hood. But I'm still gunna getchoo!" he cried, repeating his limp-wristed clawing motion and moving to chase after Joshua with a growled cross between "argh!" and "rarr!" before acknowledging that Prosper was in fact standing before him. Hesitating suddenly, Lucien glanced up at the older male apologetically and shuffled backwards with a soft kay.

"Um," said Ophelia, biting her lip, "What's French? Where do they speak it?" She looked down at the carrots in front of her. "Carrots, too, Dad!"

Prosper looked up from child wrangling (which looked to be a lost cause, anyway,) and made his way over to the table, picking up a stack of mixing bowls in the process. "Carlisle, can you put the green beans into this?" he asked. He put another in front of Casca. "And the tomatoes in this one."

He took the knife from Carlisle and gave it to Ophelia. "Dice the carrots, too, okay?" he asked. Ophelia nodded and got to work. Prosper walked off again and returned with a bag of potatoes.

"When you're done, could you go over to the sink and wash these?"

He left the potatoes waiting for them on the counter.

For a moment, Carlisle was a little insulted. History wasn't funny, it was ironic and a little ridiculous sometimes but never funny. Okay, the bathtub thing, that was hysterical, but... Then Casca actually spoke, and he felt better. "Thanks," he said, "Yeah, I guess I am." Was danke French too? Probably not. It didn't sound the same... He could sort of intuit the meaning of the word, though. That made him smile.

"Yessir," said Carlisle, scooping up a handful of green beans and dumping them into the bowl. The only downside to this plan was that there were so many green beans, and his hands weren't that big.

Quietly but with a faint smile, Delilah stepped up to the table and picked up the bowl Prosper had given Carlisle. With expert hands, she held it just below and against the table. "You can just push them in this way," she suggested. "It goes faster." She looked around at the other children and added, "I cook often with Mama. I helped make those things I brought."

More or less, anyway. She had gotten bored halfway through and wandered off to tease Uncle Kiet.

The tomatoes were upended into the bowl; Casca obediently went to scrub potatoes. He held them delicately in his claws, though he'd also flashed a passing smile at Delilah -- it was hard not to smile at Delilah, who moved through like an exotic hothouse plant -- before going back to menial potato-scrubbing.

Looked like Carlisle wasn't totally sold on being his friend. He'd have to definitely sweeten the deal. With what, though, he was racking his brains.

"I didn't help mum make hers," he said, "I can't cook. Ah, well. I have other talents."
