He followed, just for lack of anything better to do. Someone, he couldn't remember who, had confirmed he had a halo- guess it was nice to know what it looked like so he could imagine what others must see.
"I don't," he said. Actually, he felt very incurious. The whole time since he'd spotted it, he'd felt like something was going to happen if he made it to the top of the tower... But then, nothing. He joined Galleai at the center; there was a quick snck sound, and something began to fall from the ceiling...
It was a tiny, round ball, no bigger than an inch in diameter, made out of cold iron. Carlisle didn't move to touch it; in fact, it seemed like he hadn't noticed it at all.

It was odd, his change in attitude. The eagerness to get to the tower, to get into the tower, to reach the top of the tower... it all seemed to have drained away. She was musing over this fact when she managed to catch the soft falling sound.
"Uh-oh, cap'n..." Galleai took a step back, away from the glowing clock face on the floor, and reached forward to tug Carlisle back as well. She watched the ball's descending progress. Something about it felt... well, she wasn't sure. But it seemed as if something would happen when it hit the floor.

A few steps backwards and a little hopeful smile showed on his face. It looked familiar...
The ball burst open, ejecting far more icy mist than such a tiny contraption could possibly have held. Instinctively, Carlisle threw up both arms to shield his face, so he didn't see what emerged-

Instinctively, Galleai ducked behind Carlisle, shying away from the cold mist and shielding her eyes. It wasn't long, though, before she parted her fingers just enough to peer forward. And then she gasped. "Cap'n!" Galleai said, tugging on Carlisle's sleeve. "Cap'n! look!"

It was a girl, about Carlisle's age, visually identical but for her lack of halo and bangs. Her eyes were amber-gold instead of flat gray, too. She looked at both of them and brushed both hands down the sleeves of her red shirt, then opened her mouth to speak.
Before the words came out, though, the world began to fade into the soft golden mist until nothing was left.
