Sergeant Major Mitchell stepped through the Barracks door and entered the office of 1st Lieutenant Harold N. Doyle. He snapped to attention and saluted crisply when he noticed that Lieutenant Doyle was not alone. Every ODST Combat Team leader on the base was assembled in the Lieutenant's office. The room was set up for a briefing. The Lieutenant was visibly tired and looked like he had just been given orders by very scary people. This was confirmed when Major Ingram stood and introduced himself and the man standing next to him.

"Gentleman, my name is Major Ingram. This is Colonel Welsh. I trust you are all aware of the political unrest in the outer colonies as well as increased pirate activity near the Hades Gamma cluster. ONI section One was able to find a connection between a group of pirates operating near the Hellespont system and an influential party on New Harvest. We have received evidence from the Section One boys that supports the rumors of a base of operations located somewhere within the city of Illisium."

The holotank lit up and a satellite view of Illisium fizzled into view.

"This complex here," The view zoomed in and highlighted a single hotel compound. The view switched to a three dimensional image with an overlaid floorplan, "is a possible location for a meeting between two lieutenants. One representing the Pirates, another representing the backers from New Harvest. The meeting is scheduled to take place at Fifteen-hundred hours. Sergeant Mitchell's team will insert via Hornets here."

A dot appeared on the roof of the building. Small lines indicated the path of their advnance.

"Hendrix will insert here, Jacobs here, Williams here, and Penkala here."

The ODSTs would be securing separate buildings. Mitchell absorbed all the information but only paid special attention to that which involved his team. Their building was three stories tall and set in a deep urban area. They would be using Hornets because Pelicans wouldn't be able to maneuver between buildings. Guessing from the insertion plan they'd be using Hornets with extenders clamped onto the landing skids. They would get in and out quick. For backup they'd have elements from 2nd Batt. of the 301st Strike Infantry Regiment in addition to the Illisium police force. Colonel Welsh stood and took center stage. On his berret was the insignia of the Office of Naval Intelligence. He was Section 1.

"Your targets are Justin Vasquez and Louis Talbert. These are priority targets and must be taken alive. They will be protected by moderate security forces. Most likely armed with MA5 series rifles. Their security teams are expendable.

Current Images of the two men appeared alongside older three dimensional UNSC headscans. The images had been enhanced from surveillance photos taken by an ONI black ops team. Vasquez had a short beard that ended in a point on his chin. He had a shrapnel wound on the left side of his face. He had been a Marine during the war and served honorably. After the war he had become disenchanted with the UNSC and was drummed out of the Corps. He took jobs with different private security firms and eventually disappeared. Talbert was a wealthy man with a clean-cut face and powerful features. He had no facial hair save for his eyebrows and his nose was slightly crooked.

"Gentlemen, any updates will be forwarded to you in the field. Dismissed."

The Briefing had been held in secrecy, which meant that either ONI was playing with the corps. or that it didn't trust the Marine brass. There was a chance that this would lead to complications later on, but he had faith that ONI and NavSpecWeap would resolve them. It was time to get to work.

Andrew slowly brought the Warthog to a halt at an abandoned intersection he had traversed in his time patrolling the city. He turned his head toward the dark street to his right and remembered what it was the first time he had driven through there at night; there had been absolutely nothing during his patrols. However, a cherry red two door sedan sat parked on the side of the rode and a man sat with his head hanging between his knees on the curb. The private turned the wheel to the right and eased his foot down on the accelerator, pulling the Warthog up four spaces behind the sedan. The Private got out of the vehicle and grabbed his MA7K-T3 PA Assault Rifle from the weapon rack between the passanger and the driver's seat. "Darian, Zeke; spread out and check across the street" said the ODST. "Devin" he called softly, "see if he's ok."

James walked over to a parked mongoose, checking for a key which he found in the ignition. He got on and started it up, smiling as it hummed to life. He prefered driving it instead of warthog when on patrol. It was slightly more manueverable, atleast for James, in a city enviornment. He sped out the bay and onto a road, beginning his patrol.

Darian stopped smiling and grabbed his assault rifle, as alway's Darian held it with a firm grip and he knew that this time it better be extra firm, it's his time to shine "No mistake's Darian, none at all..." Darian thought to himself as he got out of the parked vehicle. Darian quickly went across the street and began to check every little detail of his enviroment, no movement or sound was made.

Darian watched the ODST's back, following him as he moved form the left sidewalk "I dont see anything, how about you?" Darian looked behind him to quickly glance at Zeke "keep sharp, I got a gut feeling." Darian looked forward again, he came to the end of a wall, there was an alley Darian quickly ran down it, checking for any enemy presence but there was none.

"Sergeant," he called to Zeke, "get your man!" Andrew hated speaking up, but the man's life could be held in the balance, and even though the ODST was a lower rank he had assumed command because of his battle experience. The boy just didn't want to see anyone hurt, that was all. His eyes traced up to the seemingly vacant windows along the building across the street. No matter how much the young O'Connol son agreed with Darian he had to keep his cool; there was no point in getting spooked over nothing.

Devin had jumped from the warthog just as quickly
as Andrew had thrown the orders at her and was making her
way, cautiously, towards the man. She didn't really see anything
out of the ordinary except that perhaps the man had drunken
too much and passed out on the sidewalk, or perhaps he'd fallen
asleep. For whatever reason it was, Devin had a weird feeling
that something was wrong.

This feeling grew even more when she knelt down next to the still
person and set her hand on his shoulder.

"Hey...Hey are you alri-" Her nudging was hard
and caused the body to fall backwards against the concrete. This
startled the sergeant and caused her to jump back a foot. She took
a few moments to examine the body before inching closer to him once
again, confirming that the man was dead. Her eyes gazed down at
him with a sickly look and grew to curiosity when she noticed
a green colored shirt, much like her own uniform, underneath
his jacket. She unzipped the front of the jacket and immediately
threw her assault rifle into her hands as she jumped to her feet.

"We got a marine down!" Devin
felt in her gut that something was going to happen and began
to feel weak at her knees. She took one more look at the marine
before she started to scout the buildings from where she stood.

((Sorry you guys. I've been seriously busy with school work. Ya know?))

Zeke got out of the Warthog and then took hold of his Sniper Rifle. He slowly took steps towards Devin's position as he kept his eyes on the area around them. What the hell happened to this man? When Devin pushed the body over. Obviously, the man was dead but what killed him? He finally got over to Devin but didn't take his eyes off of the buildings. His gun was ready but the barrel was pointed slight down. He nudged Devin with his shoulder.

"Devin. Can you determine the cause of death? Check the body." The Sergeant said as he slowly took a couple of steps away. His eyes were scanning every inch of the area around but he couldn't find anything. His finger was on the trigger and the safety was off but it might've been for no reason. He hoped that this was for no reason because the last thing he needed was a gun fight to break out. He looked over at the ODST and nodded. "How do things look?" He asked as he kept inching back towards the warthog.

New Harmony, the name stuck out like a fish out of water. Harmony was that supposed to be ironic right? A civil war was brewing, unpleasant like bad coffee. The military presence, Winter suspected would have created the opposite effect that it had. Perhaps they were easily bribed soldiers tired and devoted to greed. Maybe the soldiers wanted something for the wife or the mistress. Maybe a few beers and enough money to pay off some pretty girl to spend the night with them. Gun running had access to stores of weapons from the human Covenant war offering a new business venture. Rebellions need guns. Rebellions that had somehow survived the Covenant’s scourge of humanity and made it alive with the will to fight. Winter had received the reports and frankly, they were dull and impassive. Of course they didn’t explain what ONI was truly up to. They were hush, hush about the upcoming operation, and yes he knew there was an operation. Just nothing about it, yet.

“Sarah the reports please, thank you.” Winter commented to himself, the driver paid no attention and drove on. There was no need to speak but he wanted to avoid contact with the driver. It was best to distract himself and the driver by making the appearance of work and or insanity, on Winter’s part.

His fingers intertwined the glasses frames. He brought the pair of half transparent red spectacle up the ridge of his nose and like an invisible switch being flicked on the glasses transformed. From a simple pair of shades the sunglasses started to project through small projectors implanted around the glasses frames information, more specifically the report he was given.

A document scrolled swiftly across Winter’s HUD implanted into his glasses. There was no scent to follow and so few trails to follow it seemed almost like a dead end. Sure there were smuggled weapons, apparently a tradition on New Harmony. A smart seller left no receipts and kept their trails swept. Following the leads of sellers would have been a waste of time arrests a plenty wouldn’t bring him one inch closer to the source.

You’ll just have to wait told a voice behind Winter’s forehead.

Sadly that voice was right, patience was the only path.

The black vehicle moved from the throng of traffic zipping off on an elevated exit ramp looping north towards the military base. Winter watched half interestingly at the cars zooming past creating a rainbow of traffic all around him as they crossed onto another bustling road. Truthfully Winter almost detested the cities sterile appearance wanting a change of color from the concrete blandness. The only touch Winter could construct within his mind was a few explosions bursting overhead flames trickling across the cities surface. War, battle, blood, the images flowed before his eyes stretching on for infinity. The dreams weren’t bad the war hardened b*****d cared little for the past but drove forward. You could either keep on walking or lay and die. Winter chose the latter.

“Sir I will need identification.”

“Oh, yes sir.” Winter groped for his ID reading, Master Gunnery Sergeants Winter Charnock ONI. In short Winter was a spook.

“Very well sir move on.” The armed guard waved the vehicle through the main gate. The base was overlooked by high walls and armed guards moving with remarkable purpose eyes ever watching armor clinging to their chests.

The driver brought the slick black vehicle into the compound.

Swiftly Winter was rushed past what seemed hundreds of soldiers behind a Colonel Welsh into a room packed full of ODSTs. ONI had worked diligently to bring to surface the information playing before them. The soldiers in this room were perhaps the most trustworthy and best equipped for this ‘retrieval’ mission.

The briefing ran smoothly Winter commented to himself. As the informative speech wrapped itself up he crossed his arms across his chest moving away from the M6A handgun clipped snuggly to his waist. He enjoyed the M6A’s comfort verses it larger brother the M6C. With 12.7mm armor piercing rounds it proved itself for self protection. As the meeting came to halt Winter crossed outside the briefing room following the blank concrete halls and following the sign, ‘the armory.’

A soldier standing behind a bullet proof shield eyed the ONI operative with curiosity but with a swipe of Winter’s identification he crossed through the large metal doors. His fingers wanted to clutch the grips of the hundreds of black plated weapons. Battle riffles to assortments of handguns, sniper rifles, and shotguns. The prospect of being confronted by enemy forces was slim but you could never know and something more than a sidearm at his side would add comfort. Selecting a M7 submachine gun Winter felt the comfortable weight against his forearms. He threw a ballistic assault vest around over his chest stashing two M7 magazines into one of its many assorted holders. The hardened nylon vests would not protect him from anything but projectile weapons but hopefully that was what they were facing. Winter finished the transaction by giving a nod of thanks to the armory’s watchmen before heading to the departure vehicles.

He would be riding with the 301st allowing the ODSTs to do their invaluable work. This moment brought a momentary sadness to Winter. How he earned to slip on his old armor and move with the rest of the soldiers. Yet those days had past remnants of them pinned against the black beret upon his head and the combat knife dangling from his left hip.

“Sir?” Asked a middle-aged Sergeant from the 301st. He seemed slightly annoyed by this ONI operative intruding on the operation.

“I need a warthog. And a gunner but don’t waste your best for me. I think my driving with suffice.”

The soldier eyed him for a moment before noticing the iconic ODST blade hanging off Winter's hip and the symbol pinned to Winter’s beret. This man used to be a ODST and he deserved respect.

“Yes sir. This way sir,” he said. The soldier moved through the throng of soldiers. The ceiling was lit by a canopy of overhanging industrial lights and bellow it dozens of warthogs laid out across the concrete floor. Soldiers moved around as the sound of the mechanics of weapons with the snapping back of bolts and the sound of magazines entering the chamber.

The private left Winter with a Corporal Rodriguez , a man with a Spanish bronzed face and striking features. A salute passed between the two before the Corporal hauled himself onto his M41 Anti-Aircraft gun.

He found the seat comfortable if a bit large. Snugging himself into his seat belts he took a breathe as his fingers ran against the steering wheel. Oh baby, this was a sweet ride.

Once Darian had heard that the man was a dead marine he knew something was wrong so he quickly took his safety off and checked all the surrounding window's "I cant see anything, check the alley way's Zeke, we got the window's." Darian continued to check the windows, Darian kept his cool but he knew this one was going to get bad so he double checked every window he had already checked "All cle..." a window shattered as a marine body fell to the ground from high up in the building.

"What the hell?" Darian checked the body "Private Mathew Pole, that make's two dead marine's, be carefull guy's." Darian knew now that someone was watching them, but from where, or whom was it even.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 24, 2008 7:46 pm

Zeke looked over at Darian and gave a little nod as he made his way to one of the alleys. He stayed outside of the alley scanning it over before going in. He took slow steps and kept his rifle up and ready. This was starting to really put him on edge. Two dead marines and no sign of what killed them. The silence seemed to add to the suspense. Zeke just knew something was going to happen at any second and he was the stupid one who had gone into the alley. Always in scary movies the guy who went off alone into an alley died. No, Zeke wouldn't let that happen. This was no movie, it was the army and he wasn't some untrained civilian with just a pistol. The Sergeant was trained and had a gun that could take out most enemies with a single shot. He jumped a little as he heard a noise but found that it was just his foot stepping over some gravel and kicking a rock against a wall. Zeke found no relief from this and found that he was more scared. Come on already! He yelled in his mind as he kept looking around the alley.

Andrew glanced over at Devin temporarilly before his eyes shifted to the back window of the sedan. In it's reflection was a man seemingly no taller than the ODST standing on the buildings balcony, but in his hand he held a slim cylindrical item. On the man's face his lips were pressed together into a thing grim line, and his eyes were hard with an emotion O'Connol was all to familiar with: hate. He stepped silently back into the building as quickly as he appeared.

Everything moved slowly as thoughts raced through the Private's head; where was Zeke; where was Darian; who the hell was that; what should I do? The young soldier's eyes darted from the car's back window up to Devin. He bent his knees into a stance like a cat about to pounce and yelled, "Get back!" But the warning came too late as a fresh wave of heat grabbed O'Connol and sent him flying back through the air, slamming him against the Warthog and the wall next to it before dropping him to the ground; he had been standing a good fifteen feet from the car. Shrapnel was flying through the air, pinging off metal, embedding itself into the concrete and asphalt.

Andrew still held onto his rifle in his right hand as he slowly pushed himself off the ground, glancing to his right at the now burning hulk that had been the Cherry Red Sedan. Ten meters from the car against the building lay Sergeant Myers. The ODST got to his feet, ignoring the pain in his upper torso and the massive headache he had, and sprinted forward to her side. Kneeling down he took in the side of the poor Marine. Her exposed skin was cut up from shards of the windshield, and half her face had been burned severely from the explosion; but the worst wound lay jutting from her lower torso. A large piece of shrapnel from the engine of the car had pierced her body nearly cutting her in half; only her spine held her together. Looking at her, her vitals were starting to falter on Andrew's HUD. Gentley he took up her hand and held it between his gloved hands knowing that she didn't have too much time, maybe a minute or two.

Devin hadn't even seen it coming, and when it the wave of
heat hit her she felt her heart stop for a moment. In that split second
she saw her life flash before her eyes, a life that was far too short,
and the midst of all this she could see the visage of two male figures.
But just as soon as they had appeared, they were gone. The next
thing she knew, Devin was lying on the glass shattered ground, half
of her face badly burned and a large piece of glass sticking out
of her lower torso. This was it for her. She couldn't believe that
after all she had been through, after all the war she had fought in and
lived through, a simple car bomb would be the end of her.

Her heart pounded, attempting to keep her body alive, but Devin
knew that she would die, and she accepted it. The sudden feel
of a hand comforted her in her last moments and she gazed up
to see who it was. Andrew, the ODST, had taken up her hand
and Devin found herself fighting to smile.

"Heh...I-It just...doesn't seem f-fair...does it?"
She found herself chuckling at this comment and with the last bit
of energy she had in her, Devin removed a silver chain from her
neck and dropped it in the palm of Andrew's hand. A heart-shaped
locket dangled from the chain, holding two pictures inside; one of her
father and one of her brother, both whom had died in service of
the UNSC.

"My...My mother. P-Please...give this to...my mother..."
With those last, few words, Devin reached over and grasped onto her assault rifle that lay next to her broken body. She pulled it to her
chest, gave a last, friendly, war-hardened and cocky smile to her fellow marine, and closed her eyes. Within those last few seconds, the sergeants breathing slowed until her heart finally stopped and she
became nothing more than the corpse of a former marine; Sergeant Devin A. Myers.

Darian was shocked by the explosion "Private what the ******** is the situation?!" Darian put his assault rifle away and equiped himself with his sniper, he then checked the rooftop's and the windows "Holy s**t, Zeke! You ok?!" Darian was fine, he was behind a wall when the explosion went hit.

"Private, let's call for reinforcment's." Darian continued to scan the area through his scope "I cant see anything, let's take cover in one of these building's." Darian waiting for the others tp respond.

Alice made her way across the military base in her full armored ODST suit. The armor made a profound clanking noise as she walked, catching the attention of anyone who was nearby. No one would have guessed that a feminine body was underneath all that bulkiness, especially when her helmet remained attached to the suit. But as she found her way, the girl removed the headpiece, revealing a soft round face with striking almond eyes and supple lips. Her hair remained atop her head in a messy bun with loose subtle curls that seemed to frame her face. Alice found a spot up against a wall, and leaning against it, welcomed a soft breeze that cooled small droplets of sweat that remained on her face.

Becoming unsatisfied with her messy hair due, Alice pulled away the hair tie that kept her brunette hair in place and let her curls cascade down her back. It reached just past her shoulders now. The girl grimaced as she ran fingers through her hair, pitching it up into another, less messy bun. Though she had lovely hair, it was much of an annoyance to her. She found it better to keep shorter hair for it was more convenient. But her hair grew fast, so it remained an extreme bother. She’d have to cut it again very soon.

Overtaken by boredom, Alice sat where she stood, awaiting further orders. It seemed nowadays that she couldn’t go through one day without just a bit of excitement. As she contemplated about her job, Alice remembered the sole purpose of her reasons and removed a small locket that hung from her neck. Upon opening the small trinket, two pictures were revealed inside it. On the left was her mother, and the right, her father. Alice smiled at the cropped images of their faces which had been taken from a wedding photo of theirs. She was the spinning image of her mother and the soul embodiment of her father’s spirit. The girl smiled at the photos as they seemed to smile back. She also smiled at the thought of her younger siblings whom she cared so much for. Alice wasn’t just there to serve in the military; she was there for her family. They now had a safer place to live, where her brother and sister could go to school with no worries, and her mother could work without any unnecessary stress. But things can’t always remain peaceful. Something was brewing in the heart of New Harmony, so Alice was there to serve and protect if need be.

Zeke turned as he heard the explosion and his eyes became wide. He wanted to move but he was frozen to the spot where he stood. Just seconds ago he was standing by the car and now the marine he just talked to was thrown to a wall. He finally found the strength to move and ran to out of the alley and onto the strength. How was he so lucky to be the one living? He stared at the burning car with wide eyes. A short-lived peace had turned into the horrific death of a marine. His eyes went from the car to the dead body of the female Marine named Devin A. Myers. Again, he found that he couldn't cry over the death of Marine and couldn't find the slightest shred of pity. His mind had worked out an answer to all of the deaths he had seen. This was the UNSC so it was natural. The Marines joined fulling knowing they could die one day but still they joined. Why should one shed tears? One day, Zeke would be dying to and have one last wish so he didn't think much of it. Zeke could only think of what he should do next.
