Kodah cantered to a halt, his little sides heaving a bit. A sweat had broken out along his coat now and he took some time to regain his breath, head hanging down and he saw all the mud - he hoped that didn't mean..looking up he just managed to stifle a groan as he saw that his Uncle was pointing towards the river with one wing. How many baths in one day did he have to take? He was sure all this washing couldn't be healthy.
Kodah wandered slowly towards the water, his tail hanging down in a decidedly dejected fashion. The water was no less colder than it had been earlier, and his teeth were set a-chattering as he waded in to clean himself.

Ambroise preferred to call all these baths 'conditioning', the more accustomed Kodah became to the cold, the easier it would be for him to adapt swiftly to the alternating seasons. A warrior had to be prepared for anything, just because it became cold didn't mean that he could pause. Stiff limbs in winter were not acceptable and as a result it was imperative that his skin and muscles adapted to the climate. Admittedly this would make summers in the lowlands a little warm and uncomfortable but it was a small price to pay to be able to deal with any other shift in the weather. If anything, being too warm was more desirable than freezing to death simply because your legs shivered too much to find shelter.
One day, Kodah would thank him.
This was the thought process that went on in the depths of Ambroise's mind and with a bemused expression he watched as the tiny colt quivered against the chill of the river. In a week or two he was certain that Kodah would adapt and he would enter the river with the occasional curse (as Ambroise did) but he wouldn't be overwhelmed by the bolt of cold. There was potential in his nephew and he wouldn't dispute this, it was just a question of figuring out how to get it to reveal itself. Ambroise had never been good with kids but he could try at the very least. When he was satisfied that Kodah was clean enough (and cold enough) he approached the river with a rather rare smile on his lips.
"I would say it is the right time for you to return home to your mother, to eat and rest up... Nyah?" That said he waved his wing dismissively and the rare smile disappeared to once again be replaced by the stoic expression on his youthful features.

Right now Kodah probably wouldn't thank his Uncle, but he was thankful when Ambroise walked over to him and spoke those words that were so sweet to his little ears;
'Thank you Uncle.' he said, as he left the water and shook dog-like, making sure that he was far enough away not to get any on Ambroise. 'Will you find me when it's time for more training?' he asked, before he headed off.
