To anyone else the Elven language sounded melodic and seemed to be made for vocal music. To the four Elves of the ranger squad they were orders clear and abrupt. The Ranger lead shouted, "Make ready! Pick your targets! Aim with feeling!." The bows were drawn nearly to the breaking point. "Release!"
Four ornate shafts flew through the air at speeds difficult to see. Sarkra saw her shaft nearly lodge in the combatant's leg and continue to its true destination. Four Cabran were stricken.

Radan wonced when he heard the all-too-familiar sound of arrows streaking the air. He clenched his teeth, preparing for the pain that never came. When they didn't strike him, he looked up to see four cabrans driven back. He had no time to contemplate his good fortune, however, because the stubborn monsters still came on. A wide sideswipe of his axe bought him enough time to turn and see the source of the arrows. He saw, but at the price of the battle. Radan gave a wolf howl as he went down, tackled under the mass of six snarling cabrans.
*~*~*~*~*
"Radan!" Anika pumped her legs faster, gaining her enough speed to leap over the elves' heads. She hit the ground running, axe drawn. The blade flamed to life, along with the tips of her ears and tail, as she threw her momentum at her brother's attackers. She fought with dwarven fury, crashing into the cabrans and blasting them back with a ring of fire. She followed with water, then lightning, giving all she had to protect Radan. Her eyes glowed a bright red-orange, showing loyalty, protection, and rage. No cabran would take her brother, she would make sure of it.

Sarkra had been following the tales of the Rebellion and knew about the Cabran being the enemy. How convenient for Rebels to have come! She would join them after this. And if they didn't take her, well she had her ways... The Elves advanced and leveled their bows at the sprawled forms awaiting and relishing the moment they got back up for more.

Anika went fast to work, charging head-on into the unlucky creature that remained clawing at her brother's back. She rammed her shoulder into it, knocking it back, then followed up with a lightning blow. A glance backward let her see that the city had been alerted of thier presence. "Oh, lovely, now I look like the enemy..." She mumbled to herself, but the thought was cut short when one of the three cabrans remaining alive tackled her from behind. "Ah, sucker punch..." She at once flipped over, kicking the monster away, but it was back on her in an instant. "Get OFF, ye stupid sneakin' weasle!" She screamed, and on the last note blasted it into the air with a jet of fire. It fell beside her, smouldering and dead. But her work wasn't done, for Radan still lay face-down under cabran poison. As much as her body protested movement, she had to get to her brother. With difficulty and a substantial slash across her arm, she got to her feet. She forced her feet to carry her to Radan, who was struggling to rise but only managed to prop himself on one elbow.

"It seems our work here is done, for the most part," Said the Ranger lead, " Throw the bodies in the bushes and lets get these two indoors."
Sarkra slung her new bow on her torso and grabbed hold of one of the dead cabran, which, she happily noted, had one of her arrows in its head. That made it look rather comical. She reclaimed the arrow and flung the cabran into the bushes to the side of the trail. Sarkra wandered over to the two intruders and squatted near the one seeming to struggle to do...well pretty much anything. She merely studied the grounded one while the other intruder struggled over. Sarkra looked up at her.

Anika dropped to her knees beside Radan, helping him to sit up. She glanced at the elf and nodded; thanks would have to wait. They had prepared for cabran ambush, and Anika went straight ot her emergency plans. She dug frantically in her bag, eventually producing a clear, unlabled vial containing a blue, unnamed liquid. "Drink it and drink it fast. The poison's in your blood by now." She said, poping the top off and shoving the vial in his hands. He grimaced but obeyed, downing the half of it then shoving the rest at Anika. She drank half of what was left, since she was wounded less. Stowing the rest in her bag. "Make sure they're all dead." Radan called to the elven rangers, motioning to the bodies they were disposing of. "They like to pretend to trick you into lowering your guard." Anika turned her attention to the girl in front of them at present,. "Thank you. You've got skill with that bow."

After hearing the strange habit of the Cabran from Radan the rangers decided to double check their kills. They had all felled one creature with the volley of arrows. Counting the corpses, however, revealed that one was missing. Sarkra, oblivious of the missing quarry, nearly blushed at the complement of her prowess with the traditional weapon of her people. "Thank you, the spirit of my father must have been with me." Suddenly a dark blur erupted from a tree up above. The missing Cabran! Sarkra turned quickly to see what had made the roar and the commotion. The beast came down on one of the Elves, gnashing its jaws menacingly. Sarkra ran to the two engaged in mortal combat and drew her dual short swords. She called upon her Alteration magic and made herself faster. As she came upon the creature menacing her comrade she grabbed a tuft of fur as she flipped over the creature. As she completed the flip on the other side of the creature she lifted it, making it lighter at her command and suspending it in the air 3 feet above the ground. She proceeded to dance around the Cabran delivering slash after brutal slash. She seemed to be a hurricane of blades. After her dance of death she positioned herself at a crouch under the Cabran and called upon her Alteration magic once again. She did a punching motion at the creature above her {{Shou Ryu Ken!!!...no not really}} and it flew upward at startling speed, Sarkra now upright in the punching pose. The other elves, including the victim of the Cabran attack who had by now recovered, aimed at the airborne creature and fired when it came to the zenith of its flight. Three shafts dug themselves into its flesh. Sarkra slowly brought her bow to bear, its form flaming with the purple aura of Alteration. She aimed straight up at the Cabran and released her arrow. It blew straight threw the creature taking some entrails with it. The Cabran came plummeting to the forest floor a few feet from Sarkra with an audible crunch.

Anika looked on, slowly slipping her axe back in it's holster on her back. She had drawn it in response to the ambush from above, but it seemed that there was no need. A wry smile formed on her lips and her eyes held a look of impression. "Radan...?"She asked sideways, not taking her eyes off Sarkra. Yeah...?" He responded, in the same manner, a similar expression on his face. "We gotta have her." "Definitely. New recruit."

Sarkra stood motionless in the morning light filtering through the trees. The smirk on her face told a story of utter victory, but her eyes told a different story. She became suddenly, morbidly nauseous, she felt a sweltering wave of heat travel inside her body, and all of her strength was diminished. She fell to her knees and braced herself on her hands. Sarkra gagged, but somehow suppressed a tsunami of vomit. She had surpassed her current capacity for magic manifestation and was paying the price. She perspired heavily as she let herself fall on her back to the ground.

The grins faded as Sarkra fell, and neither foxwolf said anything. Finally Radan spoke. "Ok well..." "Yeah we'll work on it." That was Anika. They both attempted to rise, but only Anika suceeded, partly because she shoved Radan back down. "I'm not for having ye walk just yet." "Come on--" "Stay, puppy." Anika limped to kneel at the elf's side, scanning her condition and then looking up to seek out her companions.

The Ranger Lead walked over to Sarkra and Anika. He looked down at the elf on the ground. "She saved my man's life, of this there is no question! He's barely even shaken thanks to her." he said to Anika. The elf sniffed the air, "Smell that? That's the scent of magic. She must have used too much for her body to handle. Let's take her back home to rest, and get you two some medical attention. I think we're done here." Sarkra's vision was hazy, but was glad that it was filled with friendly faces. She smiled slightly and fell asleep.

Anika nodded, getting to her feet once more. "My apologies. The last thing we wanted was to bring harm to anyone." She said. "I'll scout the peremiter for any more, thoguh doubt my brother will be going anywhere soon." She volunteered, ignoring her own injuries. "I can hear you over there." Radan called from his place on the ground. "Oh hush, you can't even walk." Anika snapped back. "You can barely move!" He protested, but Anika ignored him. Chase came up beside her, sniffing at her with his eyes closed, assesing her condition. The fox had a strange sixth sense; he was currently sensing her life force. The low growling whine presented that he wasn'y happy with her condition, but she ignored him as well.

"That's rediculous," The Ranger lead said to Anika, "look at yourself! You've got less fight in you than a 3 second old owl hatchling. No, my dear, we are quite capable of defending our home ourselves. There are far more soldiers than us, we just came to see about some intruders, which we did." He put an arm around Anika. "Come, we will take you to Sarkra's house. She can rest there and we will have a medic come with us to look at you two." He indicated the two newcomers to the village. The other female elf, with a little bit of difficulty, maneuvered the unconscious Sarkra into a piggy back position on her. The other male elf went to Radan and offered a hand.

Anika couldn't help but smile at the scorning comment, even if it was about herself. "Well I do have a reputation for doing rediculous things. And if I sounded superior there, know that I meant nothing by it; I know of the elven armies...But doesn't it anger you in the slightest that we show up out of nowhere, bringing with us enemies that have injured one of your own?" She was speaking her mind again, and she knew that she shouldn't so much, but that was mer mindset. She had been in war so long that she had forgotten about the small pockets of kindness in the world.

"If you truly brought them with you, then there's no stopping the Cabran from following anyone here, and they would have come anyway. And none of mine were injured. The pounced upon man was saved any pain by Sarka's heroic action, and Sarkra will be fine given time. All's well in the end." He turned and started walking to the village. "Come," He stopped and looked back at Anika, "Unless, of course, you'd rather stay there and have dirt for breakfast. Meanwhile we'll be having something at home." smile
