Johnny raised an eyebrow at what Brooklyn had done to his finger with the knife but ignored it.
"Glad your happy with the knives," Johnny said, "And i'm about as clueless as you are when it comes to this guy." He raised the folder in his hands to emphasise the point.
He sighed, "I'm sure we'll find someway to find him."
He thought about their predicament as they walked towards one of the exits of the building. Johnny spotted a young girl close to the entrance and wandered over to her. She dealt with most of the communication between them and the gates. He asked her to contact the gate keeper at the gate they wanted to go through with a smile. The girl nodded enthusiastically before getting on with the job.
Johnny walked back to Brooklyn. "Don't they have something in the overworld where you can ring up and give them a name and they'll give you an address or something?"
~
Lilith walked back to her desk and sat down, taking out Noah's statement.
"What time is it?" she looked at her watch, "Do you think it's too early to ring Noah to come in later for an interview? May as well get it out of the way now."
Bryan shrugged. "It's not that early is it? Feels like i've been up for hours."
"You probably have, Bryan, but that isn't saying much. What time do you get here anyways?"
Bryan looked up at the ceiling and thought. "Five-thirty? Something like that."
Lilith turned around, staring at Bryan with wide eyes. Bryan glanced behind him to see why the other had gone so silent.
"Yes?"
Lilith shook her head. "You, sir, are abnormal. And i thought seven would be early. How wrong i was."
Bryan chuckled and turned to his computer. "Why thank you. Ring the kid, if he's not up you can always leave a message. I'll look up these names, see if we can get an address."
Lilith nodded and reached for the phone. "Too true."
~
Taki turned to look at Kai. "Funnily enough, Kai, that is the idea. Like you said, i wasn't getting into the evidence cabinets anytime soon and i wasn't planning too."
He stood up and took his bowl over to the sink then turned around.
"I want to see if your ugly mug is plastered all over the bloody overworld or not so that there is a chance of you lot still sneaking around up there and i won't have to deal with you more than i have to," he snapped at Kai.
Now he remembered why he didn't get up in the morning. It was to avoid everyone else's bad morning moods so that he didn't bite someone's head off.
Not that he wasn't moody normally.
"I'll head out now anyways. We have reports coming in from our source inside the tyrant's headquarters regularly. If you see anything of interest, you have my permission to act on it," he said to Rei since he seemed to be the only one functioning normally in the room, "They haven't been doing anything lately but that might change because of recent events. If the informants can't find anyone in the house, the report is usually on the desk."
He walked past Tala on his way out and patted him on the head. "Watch out for dark lonely places now Tal, i hear they're everywhere," he smirked before walking out of the room.
Tala grunted and went back to sipping his coffee, still half asleep.

Brooklyn shrugged as they walked out of the building. “I’m not normally involved in the reconnaissance side of my missions.” He said shortly. “So I wouldn’t know anything about it.”
He sighed as the car pulled up to take them to the gate Johnny specified. Perhaps he had been wrong and Johnny was just like all the other idiots that had been sent to babysit him. Brooklyn got into the car and closed the door. He paused for a second before rolling down the window and poking his head out. “You know, this kid probably has to go to the police station at some point today. If we find him there then wait til’ he’s somewhere less conspicuous... It could work”
Brooklyn shrugged and wound up the window again, angry with himself. Planning missions not his job. He put a hand inside his jacket, feeling the sheath of the knife he had tucked in there. He pulled the knife out of his jacket and held it in his lap, staring down at it reverently. This was his job.
~
Noah jumped when the phone began to ring. He waited for it to ring twice before picking it up. “Thomas residence, Noah speaking” He said as he opened up the fridge, gauging the edibility of the contents.
~
Rei nodded and stole Kai’s cup. “Alright. Stay safe up there, okay?” He asked, taking a sip of the coffee and making a face. “Eugh! That’s disgusting.” He told Kai, giving him back the mug. “Why the hell would you drink something like that?”
Kai shrugged and took his cup back from Rei’s unresisting fingers. “It’s the one drink I thought would be safe from you.” He said seriously, taking another sip. “Plus it makes me a decent person to be around in the mornings.”
Rei grinned and finished eating his cereal. “You do know that caffeine is addictive, right? What happens if one day, because we can’t get up into the overworld, we run out of the stuff?”
“We form a raiding party, send Tala up as a sacrifice to distract the authorities and get some more.” Kai said without hesitation. “This time we make sure to steal enough so that we never run out.”

Johnny raised an eyebrow at Brooklyn. He wasn't actually asking for the other to solve all their problems. Just making making conversation.
To be honest, it was rare for Johnny to be on any mission like this. It was why he had only heard stories about Brooklyn and not actually seen him in action.
Sure, he had popped up from time to time while Johnny was in the room but that was all.
He wondered why Issac chose him to accompany Brooklyn. Johnny shook his head before opening the car door and getting in. It probably had slipped Issac's mind.
He waved to the driver to go before sitting back, furrowing his eyebrows in thought.
He was starting to wonder about all the things he had heard about Brooklyn. Apart from the aura of creepiness that emanated from the guy, he seemed to be altogether mind wise.
Maybe Brooklyn's skills weren't being fully utilized.
"We'll won't be able to do anything outside the police department," Johnny said," But i think you already know that."
Johnny opened the folder to look at the brief description. "Maybe some kind of trap. If he's a kind of person who's kind enough to help people, it shouldn't be too hard to lure him away from the public eye and deal with him. If he's not like that then more force might be needed." ~
"Hi, Noah, it's Detective Lilith McAdams from the Homicide department, I don't think i had chance to speak with you yesterday. How are you?" Lilith asked while fiddling with a pen.
Bryan began to type up descriptions of the suspects to enter into the data base. He had the distinct feeling that all of this was a bit too easy.
~
Tala put his coffee cup down and looked at Kai. "What was that about a sacrifice?"
He looked around the room for a moment and furrowed his eyebrows. "Where'd the other one go?"
The other one being Taki. This was why Tala didn't get up in the morning. He was useless.
~
Taki gave a backwards wave to Rei as he worked out of the door. Of course he'd be fine. He wasn't going to get into trouble if he could help it, despite what Kai thought.
He walked into his office and headed towards the desk. An assortment of weapons was kept in the last draw.
Sure it wasn't very secure, but Taki knew who came in and out of this house. It wasn't unusual for there to be weapons lying around in someone's house, this was the underworld after all. There weren't any laws about weapons, or anything for that matter, in this society.
Taki closed the draw after grabbing the items he wanted and headed for the front door.
It was dark, as per usual, outside. And cold. It was always cold. The sun didn't heat the earth this far down. It was pretty much like living in a cave. A very big, highly dangerous cave.
Taki shook his head at the thought, concentrating on where he was going and who was around. Lack of concentration meant death in this place.
The rebel's base was really on the outside of the city so it wasn't as densely populated as it was inside the city walls but there were enough people around to cause trouble. The tyrants didn't have as many scouts out this far either. There was just too much ground to cover to be effective.
Taki had reached one of the entries into the overworld. He looked around before going through.
There were also certain secrets that the rebels were able to keep form the Tyrants, like other ways into the overworld apart from there gate systems.
Taki smirked to himself, wondering if the Tyrants were baffled about how the rebels, especially the ones known to Balcov, were moving around the place.

Brooklyn took the file off Johnny and read it again, raising an eyebrow as he noted some of the details he hadn’t paid attention to before. “He’s not very sociable. Either that or he’s fairly introverted. He was by himself walking with a lone girl in front of him and didn’t talk to her. Nor did he make any attempt to catch up to her and avoid being seen as a creepy stalker. So he either doesn’t care or simply didn’t notice her. Added to that his reaction to being basically ignored after an incident like that? We won’t need to do anything. All we have to do is wait; he’ll go somewhere quiet all by himself.”
Brooklyn put the file on to the empty seat between himself and Johnny. “He won’t put up much of a struggle.” Brooklyn sighed softly, he didn’t understand it when he was given such straight forward cases. They were beneath him, really. He turned to stare blankly at the shadows through the window. At least it would get him to the overworld. Perhaps, when the mission was over, he would be able to convince Johnny to let them stay up there for a while longer.
The car pulled to a stop outside the gateway Johnny had chosen, his eyes widening as he recognised it. He got out the car and headed into the building without waiting for Johnny.
“Are you the people from Centr- B-Brooklyn!” The gatekeeper visibly paled before recovering himself. “Um... I mean welcome Sir! It’s been a while.”
Brooklyn smiled benignly, reaching out to grab the front of the gatekeeper’s clothes. He slammed the other into the wall, still with the smile fixed firmly on his face. “It has been a while, hasn’t it?” He said lightly. “So long ago that I can’t remember what happened last time, can you?” He asked, shaking the gatekeeper for emphasis.
His victim squeaked, earning himself another dint in the wall. “Can you remember what happened last time?” Brooklyn asked pleasantly.
The gatekeeper shook his head, hands fumbling uselessly against Brooklyn’s hold. “You’ve been here before?” He managed.
Brooklyn nodded and dropped the man he was holding. “Exactly.” He said, disdain coming into his voice.
The gatekeeper nodded as he stood up, straightening his clothes. “Of course I’ve heard of your reputation. I’m honoured that you’ve chosen to use my gate for your transport. May I ask who is with you?”
~
Noah’s eyes widened as he recognised who he was speaking to and what she would want to hear about. “Uh- I’m- Uh. Fine.” He stammered out. “You?” He recovered himself enough to ask. “How are you? Isn’t it a bit early to be at work?” He asked, glancing at the clock.
~
“Taki left to do his job.” Kai said flatly, the caffeine starting to kick in. “It’s a change.”
Rei smirked and turned to put his bowl in the sink. “Just like you’re going to do your job and clean up the kitchen?” He asked sweetly. “Thanks so much!” He leant over the peck Kai on the cheek before quickly walking out of the room. “I’m going to have a look on Taki’s desk to see if we have anything pressing to do. If not I’ll be holed up there for a while catching up.” Rei smiled and walked to the back of their house and into Taki’s office.
He rolled his eyes at the mess on the table. Trust Taki to be running the most effective rebellion force since the Tyrants set up their regime with a desk that looked like a bombshell.

Johnny raised an eyebrow at Brooklyn's analysis of their target. If he got all that from the brief description, why on earth was he just a hit man?
Johnny's eyes widened in alarm as Brooklyn as he disappeared into the building. What was his problem?
He quickly open the car door to follow, fumbling a few times because he was trying to do it too quickly. He raced into the building after the other man calling out.
"Brooklyn!"
He came to a stop inside the building when he saw the frazzled gatekeeper and Brooklyn.
Johnny's head tilted to the side as he took in the view. Something was definitely going on here.
~
Lilith laughed. "You have no idea what we consider early around this place. No, seriously, take it up with my partner Bryan when you get here. You'll be surprised at what time he starts work."
Bryan rolled his eyes at the remark and continued typing. Five-thirty wasn't really that early. Besides, it was better than sitting around at home and he was always up at that hour.
"Anyways," Lilith continued, "Ignore my babbling. I wanted to ask you to come into the department some time today if it suits you. We'd liked you to identify the suspect in these photos that we just received. Is today ok?"
~
Tala nodded and went back to his coffee. He took a sip, or tried to at least, before realising there was nothing left.
"Oh well, time to wake up i suppose," he said looking into his cup.
~
It was rather cliche that Taki had to walk through this cramped tunnel to get to one of the portals to the overworld. How original to have a portal at the end of a dark, creepy tunnel. No one would ever think to look there. Except that's where all things seemed to be hidden.
He rolled his eyes at the thought. Luckily for them it did remain hidden, much to his shock.
A faint glow up ahead caught his attention. It was unusual for there to be any light in here at all. As he got nearer he could make out what it was.
The glow moved, making him slow down. He got close enough to touch it before it turned around and hissed at him. Taki jumped and hit his head on the ceiling.
"s**t!" he exclaimed clutching his head. The thing hissed again before running away towards the entrance. Taki watched it go with a glare. He hated those animals that could glow, they always looked so goddamn freaky. This particular one was skeletal, had a huge glowing hump on its back, dark, wrinkled skin and pupiless eyes.
Taki shuddered again before making his way further into the tunnel. He reached what appeared to be a dead end but continued walking.
He stopped, putting his hand up to the rock wall. There was a faint glow before his hand disappeared through the wall. Taki continued to walk and had soon disappeared altogether. There was no evidence that he had ever been standing in front of the wall or that he had walked through it. Everything was as it had been.

“He is.” Brooklyn told the gatekeeper.
“What’s that look for?” Brooklyn asked mildly, turning to Johnny with a raised eyebrow. After a second he shrugged before turning back to the gatekeeper. “Now that my escort has arrived would you give us access to the gateway?” He asked, smiling. He hated the fact that all gatekeepers knew he wasn’t allowed access to the gateways without an escort. Not that any escort could control him, of course, but it was an inconvenience.
The gatekeeper bobbed a bow before hurrying away, glad to be out of Brooklyn’s presence. Aside from the impromptu violence (that was fairly normal), the sudden change of demeanour was plain unsettling. That someone could change personality so rapidly was unnatural. The gatekeeper hurried into the control room, shutting and locking the door behind him. He moved over to the control panel and entered in a series of codes in order to unlock the room guarding the gateway.
Brooklyn smiled as the heavy metal gates opened, revealing a non-descript room with a raw rockfacing for one wall. He raised a hand to wave at the gatekeeper while he walked toward the rock, once again not waiting for Johnny. He touched the rock, caressing it almost lovingly as he felt the warmth that indicated a gateway. He stepped through without fear.
~
Noah laughed. “I don’t think I want to know what time he starts work.” He said as he snuck a bite of an energy snack bar. “Today?” Noah asked, checking the clock. There was no way he was getting to school. He tried to care but just couldn’t bring himself to. “Yeah, sure. I’ll leave now. Be there in about half an hour?” He asked, taking another bite of his breakfast.
~
Rei sighed as he sat down at the desk and picked up the piece of paper on top. He read it briefly. Paused. And read it again.
“s**t.” He said angrily, standing up and rushing out of the office. “Kai! Tala!” He called, trusting they would hear him. “We have to go now!”
Kai looked up from his contemplation of the coffee. “...What?” He asked intelligently.
Rei appeared in the kitchen, throwing coats at Kai and Tala, already wearing one himself. “Do you remember that boy from yesterday? The overworld one? Balcov’s put an order out for his death.”
Kai paused for a second too long. “That’s bad?” He asked, “Sorry, but isn’t him seeing us a huge risk on our part? Wouldn’t it be better if Balcov cleared up that loose end for us?”
Rei glared at Kai. “And you’re happy to let him die because we screwed up?” He asked, daring Kai to argue. “It’s that kind of behaviour that we’re fighting against. There’s enough death and destruction down here. There’s no reason to bring it up to innocent people.”

Johnny blinked a few times before shrugging and following Brooklyn.
Maybe he was wrong and all those stories he hear were true. If that scene was anything to go by, Brooklyn sure was a creeper.
He walked up to the rock face and laid his hand on the surface waiting for the portal to activate before following Brooklyn through.
~
"That will be great," Lilith told Noah, "I'll see you when you get here then. Good bye Noah."
Bryan waited for the phone conversation to finish before he swiveled his chair around to face Lilith. It was time for a coffee break and he knew the best person to get a coffee from.
A certain bet had nothing to do with at all. Not.
~
The coat landed on top of Tala's head, completely covering his eyes and turning the world just a little bit darker.
"What do we have to do now?" he mumbled through the coat before pulling it off to look at Rei.
"Who were we saving? I didn't know there was someone else at that scene."
~
Taki squinted as he stepped in the overworld and the blinding light of the sun. He turned around to look at the portal and frowned.
"Great," he muttered, "Still a blank rock wall. No wonder no body has found this thing. Its too bloody hard to find."
He looked around for some kind of marker, anything that would tell him where the portal was. Someone had planted a tree on one side of the portal. It was still young, so it only came up to Taki's hip but it was a very good marker.
Taki turned and walked toward the buildings and busy streets that were closest to him, wondering if Rei had planted that tree there. Sounded like something he would do.

Brooklyn smiled as the sun hit his face for the first time in what could have very well been months. Time was an extremely hard thing to keep track of in the underworld. He looked around at the small alley he had stepped into, mentally calculating where they were in the overworld city. He paused to wait for Johnny to come through the wall behind him.
It was irritating to have to always wait for his babysitters but it was preferable to the alternative. After his first (and only) solo trip to the overworld Boris had been on the verge of banning him from the gateways for good. He had only been saved spending the rest of his life in the darkness of the underworld because of his skills.
Brooklyn waited until Johnny was completely through before walking to the mouth of the alley. “The police station should be... this way.” He said, indicating. “It’s not that late. There’s a high chance he won’t have gone yet or, if he has, he hasn’t left the station left.” Brooklyn paused before walking off again, looking at Johnny, trying to hide the amusement from his face. “Try to keep up?” He asked before disappearing around the corner. ~
Noah hung up the phone and finished his breakfast, desperately trying not to think about the events of the day before. He only needed to remember the faces of the three people he described to the police. Nothing more. He didn’t need to think about anything else. Only their faces.
He sighed and threw away the wrapper of his breakfast. Like that was going to happen. He screwed up his eyes and rubbed the bridge of his nose in an attempt to calm himself. “May as well get this over and done with.” He muttered to himself, walking back into his room and finding a coat.
He looked around his room once, assessing whether he would need anything other than himself. Deciding not, he turned and left his room, grabbing his set of keys as he walked out the door of the apartment he shared with his mother. Noah locked the door of their apartment, mentally mapping the fastest route to the police station. The faster he went and identified those people the faster he could forget about the whole event, he reasoned. Noah pocketed his keys and walked down the stairs and out of the apartment building. He blinked in pain as the sun hit his eyes for the first time that day. Shaking his head in disgust he turned and walked down the street, thankful that the police station wasn’t that far from his house. Noah didn’t particularly like the sun. It was too dazzling. Even on a cold day like today it seemed to work its way into everything.
Noah walked at a brisk pace until he found himself staring up at the front of the police station building. He allowed himself a brief smile as the large structure gave him respite from the sun. The smile disappeared as he steeled himself and walked into the building. He only had to do one thing.
~
“That’s because we were too busy running away to save our own asses.” Rei told him matter of factly as he walked back into the kitchen and opened the pantry. He pushed aside several boxes of cereal of the non-chocolate variety to reveal a small stockpile of weapons. He pulled out three guns and a few extra clips of bullets.
Rei paused in his preparations to look at the other two, exasperated. “Don’t you understand? They’re going to kill this person.” He said almost pleadingly. “More than that, they’ve sent Brooklyn after him which means this poor kid is going to die a horrible death all because he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Rei began to stash a few of the extra clips on his person. “I’m not going to be responsible for the death of another overworlder.” He said flatly, loading his gun with the last clip he had pulled out for himself. “Especially not a death that we can prevent.” He pushed the rest of the equipment he had pulled out towards Kai and Tala. “Look. Either you both come or I’m going alone.” He said, checking that the safety catch was on and tucking his gun in the waistband of his pants.
Kai paused for a second, gauging Rei for his seriousness before sighing and grabbing one of the guns and several of the spare clips Rei has pushed over. “Time to wake up Tala.” He told the redhead as he began the same process of loading his gun and stashing the spare clips. He fixed Rei with a hard look. “And just say we manage to find this kid in that huge city.” He said, standing and pulling the coat on. “How do you propose to save him, exactly? Especially if it’s Brooklyn. “
Rei raised his eyebrows. “You’re assuming they know more than us about the kids whereabouts?” He asked, smirking. “If we find him before Brooklyn even gets a whiff of him we can hide the kid and we won’t be in any danger.”
“And the reason for the heavy weaponry then?” Kai asked with a raised eyebrow.
Rei smiled wolfishly. “In case if we do run into Brooklyn I want to be able to greet him properly.”
Kai nodded, understanding completely. Brooklyn had been responsible for the deaths of many rebels, some of them friends. “Let’s go then.” He said, walking out of the kitchen.
Rei grinned and followed him, turning to call over his shoulder, “Seriously, Tala, time to wake up.”

Johnny raised a hand to shield his eyes from the glare of the sun. Unlike many of the inhabitants of the underworld, he was overly fond of the sun. There was something unappealing about squinting all the time to cope with the glare and his skin just wasn’t made for the sun.
A typical redhead, Johnny was easily burnt and, much to his irritation, he only ever turned as pink as a lobster while everyone else could tan.
Johnny frowned in annoyance at both the sun and having to accompany Brooklyn on this mission. He was ready to go back to dark and he hadn’t taken three steps in the over world.
He grinded his teeth together at Brooklyn’s instructions to keep up before he followed the other man in silence. Johnny may have been here to keep an eye on Brooklyn but it certainly seemed like Brooklyn was the one pulling the strings.
~
Lilith put down the receiver. “Noah should be by soon,” she said turning to Bryan, raising an eyebrow at the fact that Bryan was already facing her.
Bryan nodded before holding up a mug that normally sat on his desk. Lilith chuckled and stood up, taking the mug of Bryan.
“You don’t need to tell me, it’s coffee time, I know,” she said before making her way to the little kitchen in the back of the building.
Smirking, Bryan turned back to his computer. “Thank you, Lilith,” he called after her. He had just finished the write up of the suspects and the incident for yesterday. It was time for him to start searching for their suspects and where they could possibly be found.
~ “I’m awake, I’m awake,” Tala retorted, standing up and slipping into his coat. He grabbed the remaining gun on the table, loading it and switching the safety lock on in a quick succession of clicks. Maybe it was because of living in the harsh reality underworld but preparing a weapon was one of the few things he was able to do without thinking while still half asleep. He was pretty sure everyone else was able to do it to. Such was life.
He shoved the spare clips in his pocket and following the other two out of the kitchen.
“I hate to say it out loud,” he said, “But are these,” he held up his gun before tucking it to the waistband of his pants, “going to do anything to that nut-job Brooklyn if we happen to run into him? I have my doubts.”
~
Taki stuck to the back alleys as he made his way toward the police department. He always isisted on keeping to the shadows and back streets when he was in the overworld in case something happened.
They all had to go into the main streets when they were after something in the overworld, back having good knowledge of the hidden back alleys always helped when you wanted to be inconspicuous.
You couldn’t stand out if no one saw you.
Taki worried his bottom lip as he walked along. Balcov was unpredictable. No one had expected that he would kill Voltaire in order gain the upper hand nor had they expect him to aid detectives in the overworld in an investigation that could ultimately reveal everyone in the underworld.
Taki frowned. Balcov had to be up to something. He would only let innocents up here run around investigating for so long, especially when he was directly involved.
The rebel leader was going to have to find more sources to get into Tyrant’s headquarters.
Taki sighed. The Rebels he was in charge of now was relatively new. The rebels had been around for a while now but every attempt at an overthrow was thwarted. This may have been the most effective rebel alliance so far but there was no telling how well it would fair against the Tyrants. As it was, Taki thought things were starting to crumble around the edges. They were stringing this fight out too long. Something was going to have to be done soon.
History, unfortunately, was against them.
~
Lilith tapped her fingers on the kitchen counter as she waited for the kettle to boil. There were no fancy coffee machines here, just good old boiled water and instant coffee, or a teabag in her case. It was too expensive to buy coffee everyday with Bryan’s coffee addiction. This one was probably his second one today. Lilith looked towards the ceiling as she thought.
Might be his third too. She didn’t know how many he had earlier in the morning since she wasn’t around for those.
Maybe she should stage an intervention for her partner. All this caffeine couldn’t be doing any good.
“Oh, Lilith there you are.”
She turned her head to glance at the guy leaning around the door. He was one of the other detectives in this building. With the amount of staff in this building, it was clear that there were a lot crime cases to be investigated in this city alone. Rather disheartening. Why was she in this depressing industry again?
“Hey, Matt,” she said, “Bryan needs his caffeine fix. What did you need me for”?
He smiled. “Typical for him. You’re rostered on to take the garbage out the back this week aren’t you?”
Lilith nodded. “As long as I’m in the office and not otherwise preoccupied with events out in the field,” she clarified. The department’s chief was a little odd. He had started a roster as soon as he started about everyday things that had to be done around the office and handed it to his staff members. It rostered people to do things like take the rubbish out the back, make sure there was water in the water cooler, make sure there was sugar, milk and coffee in the kitchen and other little things.
Like they didn’t have enough to worry about with their other duties.
Most people complained that the cleaners could empty the rubbish but the chief didn’t want anyone trying to fish through their rubbish and get clues or any other private documents.
Of course there was a shredder for those things but he believed people would try to piece things together like a puzzle so he felt better if it was his own staff that took out all the rubbish to the big dumpster.
The chief had many quirks like that.
“Just wanted to tell you the bin in here is full already,” Matt said.
Lilith frowned. “But it’s only the start of the day.”
Matt grimaced. “Yeah, we think someone was doing a lot of shredding late last night. Then we’ve had a lot of paper rubbish this morning. One of the printer keeps splatting ink everywhere.”
Lilith nodded. “I’ll be right on it,” she told him just as the kettle clicked off, “Right after Bryan gets his coffee."
Matt chuckled before walking off. “Thanks Lilith.”
She sighed. Right, get coffee to Bryan, get rid of all the shredded paper and then come back and make myself tea.

Brooklyn walked quickly toward the police station, trusting Johnny to keep up with him. “If we can find somewhere where we can watch the front of the police station inconspicuously we can just camp out until he appears. Then we just need to wait until he gets by himself.” Brooklyn continued to walk, trying not to pay attention to the sheer amount of life around him.
More than the darkness of the underworld Brooklyn hated the lack of life down there. The animals in the underworld exuded a creepy aura so unlike the exuberance of the living things up here. He turned to Johnny, about to comment before he noticed the look of distaste on the redhead’s features. “What’s that look for?” He asked as they rounded the cornerand the police station came into view. ~
Noah looked around the lobby of the police station, unsure of himself. He walked over to the reception desk and stood there for a second, feeling awkward. “Um...” He began. “I’m... uh. Noah Thomas. I’m here to have a look at some photos?”
~
Rei looked over at Tala and raised an eyebrow as they left their house. “Although Brooklyn is good at what he does he’s still one of us, you know.” Rei said matter of factly. “Which means that, if we can hit him, he’ll feel it.” Rei smirked and began jogging, heading toward the nearest gate to the overworld.
Kai rolled his eyes and followed Rei. “If we can hit him.” He muttered, jogging at an easy pace. “So. Tell me your master plan in order to find the kid.” He said, doubt clear in his voice. “I assume you do have one, right?”
“We wait near the police station.” Rei said with a smirk, pleased at his own cleverness. “They’ll be wanting a statement from him sometime so that’s a place he’s almost guaranteed to be.

"I hate the sun," Johnny answered, giving Brooklyn half of the truth, "It's way too bright, way too hot and never fails to make me burn and turn into a cooked lobster."
Johnny looked around the street the police station was in, looking for a decent vantage point as well as someplace that wouldn't look like the pair of them were just standing and watching the building.
There were a few small shops and a cafe on the opposite side of the street. He caught up with the other male so that they were standing beside each other.
"How about there," he motioned to the cafe across the road, "It's easy enough to see the building from there plus no one is going to think we're loitering if we're sitting down just like everyone else."
Johnny thought for a moment. "I'm pretty sure there won't be any rebels up here to spot us just yet. Those three yesterday handled most of the missions in the over world. That idiot leader of their's will probably be scrambling around looking for more people to fill in. If he has any left that is."
He smirked. "Of course we may have to find some money to order coffee and actually look the part of normal customers. Any good at pick-pocketing?"
~
Bryan's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. The first suspect's name he had typed in hadn't come back on any of the databases. The guy didn't exist either, just like Balcov.
He tried another name. Searching in every database available to him.
Nothing.
"Dammit," he muttered. If nothing came up he was going to have to do way more investigating. Possibly even getting higher government departments involved.
Something really fishy was going on here. He'd have to talk to Lilith when she got back.
~
Tala scoffed as he started jogging. "Sure he may be the same as us but i wasn't talking about in this form."
He stopped jogging. "Wait a second. Just realised you were talking about the Brooklyn. Why are we going again?"
He started jogging again and shook his head. "Was nice knowing you i guess."
~
Taki was getting closer to the police station now. He could just make out the car park around the back near the large dumpsters.
It was probably going to look weird when he walked out on the main footpath to see the front of the police station but he shrugged it off. Everyone would be too preoccupied with their own lives to worry about him walking out of a car park without a car driving into it.
He was just here to see if there were any recent wanted posters displayed out front. That was all. How much trouble could he get into?
~
Lilith poured water into Bryan's cup and stirred the concoction around. She couldn't drink as much coffee as he could throughout the day and really marvelled at how Bryan was able to do it. One cup in the morning was enough for her.
Actually, she was pretty sure the milk in it made her feel queezy, and that was the only reason she couldn't drink so much.
She picked the mug up and walked back to Bryan's desk. She put the mug down in front of him.
"Have chuck a bin-full of paper out so i'll be back shortly," she told Bryan, too preoccupied with garbage removal task to notice the troubled look on his face. He nodded in acknowledgment but continued to stare at his computer, fixated on his name search.
Lilith picked up the large garbage bag near the bin, which was almost a quarter full already, and headed to the front door. My God, how do these people go through this much paper?.
Amy was just greeting Noah as Lilith reached the lobby.
"Hello," Amy said to Noah, "Which detective are you here to see?"
"He's after Bryan and I," Lilith said walking over, "Bryan is at his desk if you want to take Noah through. I have a bag full of paper to deal with." She raised the garbage bag in her hand before looking at Noah.
"Hello, Noah, I'll be with you and Bryan shortly, ok?" she smiled before walking towards the door.
Amy nodded and smiled at Lilith. "Sure thing. Follow me Noah," she said smiling before leading Noah to Bryan's desk.
Lilith was glad the front door was on the side closest to the carpark. How odd would she look walking out into the public with a garbage bag. Seriously, who decided to design a duty like this? And who on earth thought it was a good idea not to put a door leading outside at the back of the building?
She was almost at the large dumpster behind the building when she noticed a guy walking into the car park from the back.
She raised an eyebrow and slowed her walking. That was odd. What was he doing coming from that way?
The male hadn't spotted her yet so she studied him for a moment as he got closer. He must have about a head and a bit taller than her, blue-black hair, dark grey shirt, dark olive green jacket, jeans...
Why was that familiar?
Taki looked up from where he had been watching the ground as he walked and spotted Lilith. Great, he thought, Now i have to make up some reason for being back here.
He smiled at her and opened his mouth to say something but was stopped by her gasp.
Lilith's eyes widened and her hand instintively moved for her gun at her side.
"Takiran Kinsley," she muttered. What is he doing here? This will be the easiest arrest yet.
Taki's eyebrows shot up and his eyes moved to where her hand was on the gun. She must be a police officer at the station.
She certainly knew who he was and there was only one way that was possible. Balcov ratted him out too.
Oh s**t.

Brooklyn looked over at the cafe and nodded. “I’ll take care of the money.” He told Johnny, heading toward the cafe. “You sit down and watch for the kid. Follow him if he comes out and I’ll find you.” Brooklyn smirked and headed into the cafe.
Once inside, he looked around the cafe, figuring out the easiest target. The cafe was busy with late breakfasts and the inside was packed, a single waitress hurrying around between the tables. Brooklyn began walking toward the main counter, eyes still roaming the cafe as he perfected his plan. He managed to hook one foot around leg of an empty chair and fell, taking the chair with him.
Brooklyn gritted his teeth as he felt the chair fall on top of him. Next time I’ll just mug someone. He decided as he began to sit up amid the sudden silence of the cafe. “Ouch.” He muttered.
“Are you ok, Sir?” The waitress asked, hugging a tray to her chest nervously. “Are you hurt?”
“Huh?” Brooklyn looked up at the waitress and gave her a beguiling smile. “Oh. No, no I’m fine.” He said as he struggled to his feet, one hand rubbing the back of his head sheepishly. “Just need to watch where I’m going. That’s all.” He laughed awkwardly as the rest of the cafe lost interest and returned to their conversations.
The waitress gave him a hesitant smile. “Um... Ok then... if you’re sure...” She paused for a second, making a decision. “What did you want to get anyway? It’s on the house.”
Brooklyn blinked, genuinely shocked. “Uh... just two flat whites for me and my friend out there.” He said with a sweet smile, holding out some notes. “Are you sure? I can pay.”
The waitress smiled and waved the money off. “No. It’s ok. I’m just glad you’re not hurt. I’ll bring out the coffee in a little bit. You go sit down.”
Brooklyn smiled at the waitress before nodding. “Well... Thank you... We’ll just be out here.” He sent her one last charming smile before turning and walking out of the cafe.
He walked over to the table Johnny had chosen and sat down. “I almost feel bad for taking her tips.” He said, putting the small collection of notes on the table. “Do you have any use for this?”
~
Noah looked at Bryan and swallowed nervously. He hadn’t gotten any less scary since he had last seen the broody cop. “Um... hi. Remember me?” He asked, his voice rising at the end like a teenager’s. “Ahem... um... You want me to look at a few photos?” He tried again, his voice coming out slightly more normally.
~
“No one actually knows about Brooklyn and what he’s like when he... changes.” Rei told Tala as they reached a bare rockface halfway down a tunnel. He paused to wait for the other two to catch up. “So we can’t really know what it’s like when he does.”
“That’s because anyone who’s seen him change isn’t alive anymore.” Kai reminded Rei before going through the gateway.
Rei paused for a second before raising an eyebrow. “Then we’ll just have to get him before he changes.” He said, following Kai through.
Kai sighed almost reverently as the sun hit his skin, warming him in a way that just wasn’t possible in the chilly underworld. He turned as Rei came through the rockface and gave him a little smile. “I hope the police up here haven’t got our faces yet.” He said, turning to look directly at the sun. “I don’t want to give this up.”

Johnny took a seat at one of the tables outside the café. Hey had a great vantage point from here with the front entrance of the station fully visible.
And shade. Johnny didn’t have to wait in the sun. Luck was definitely on their side.
Johnny turned his head to stare into the café at the commotion Brooklyn had caused. He smirked before turning around to watch the station again. That guy was a genius.
He looked up when Brooklyn came over and took a seat.
“Feel bad? You can feel bad about doing things to people?” Johnny asked the other and looked down at the notes.
“Nice.”
~
Bryan slowly dragged his eyes of the computer screen and looked up at Noah. He blinked a couple of times before realising who the mousy boy before him was.
“Noah isn’t it?” he said, standing up, “Don’t remember if I introduced myself to you yesterday. Bryan Kuznetsov. Thanks for coming.”
He held out a hand for Noah to shake. He looked over at Lilith’s empty chair and shrugged. She must have had a lot of paper to get rid of.
Lilith would show up soon so he may as well start showing Noah the photos.
“I have the photos right here,” he told Noah as he gathered them up, “would you like a seat?”
~
Tala walked through the wall and stood beside Rei. He also turned his face up to the sun, basking in it’s light.
“Light,” he said, “I like light. The dark gets way too repetitive.”
~
“Takiran Kinsley,” Lilith said in a louder voice as she brought her gun out to point at him, “You’re under arres-”
He was quicker than her though and he knew what she was about to do. He had started moving when she said his name, closing the space between the two of them and hitting the gun out of her hand while he reached for one of his own weapons.
“Ah.” Lilith’s arm bent back painfully and her gun flew through the air, clattering to the ground. She had never had the reflexes to shoot at someone as soon as she saw them making amove. Nor did she have the guts to shoot anyone. It was why she mainly stuck to analysing their evidence and Bryan did the arresting.
Taki was immediately behind her, pinning her to his chest and a blade against her neck. Lilith froze, not wanting the blade to cut her throat if she struggled, or screamed. She didn't want to get any innocent people involved with someone like this if she did scream anyways. She'd be dead and she was pretty sure he would hesitate in stabbing anyone else if they came to her aide.
He looked around quickly before dragging them both to the wall beside the dumpster. It was at the back of the building so no one could see them.
“You’re not arresting me today,” he muttered at her.
“You’ll get caught eventually,” she retorted, her breath coming in quick gasps.
He snorted. “Unlikely.”
Taki tried to keep his voice calm but it was anything but calm in his head.
s**t, s**t, s**t, s**t, s**t, ********> he thought, Now what am I going to do? I can’t just leave her here like this. That’s not going to look good on my record. Coming here was definitely a bad idea. Damn you Balcov! Should have known you would have pulled something like this.
Lilith noticed that Taki was in deep thought and not really paying attention to her. She moved slightly.
Maybe if she could get a good blow from her elbow in…
The blade was pressed painfully against her neck. She could tell that it had left a nick.
“Try it, princess, and you’ll be sorry,” her captor growled.
Ok so he was paying attention to her. That wasn’t going to work. Damn.
Taki mentally sighed. Unlike Balcov he couldn’t kill someone just because they had caught him. His conscience would never let him rest if he did that. It left only one option left.
He grimaced at the thought.
He was going to have to take her with him back to the base.
Taki moved his hand down Lilith’s side while still holding onto her, looking for her utility belt.
Lilith sucked in a breath. What was he doing?
His hand connected with metal and he grinned, pulling the handcuffs of her. He was observant enough to notice the handcuffs on her belt as well as the gun holster. All members of the department wore these things once they were on duty in case they were called out into the field.
“You have the keys for these I hope,” Taki said as he brought the handcuffs closer to himself.
She didn’t answer out loud. She did of course have them on her. They were on set of keys in her pocket.
Taki glanced at the handcuffs, noting they were open before locking them onto Lilith’s wrists, keeping her arms behind her.
Lilith closed her eyes. Captured and bound by her own items. How humiliating.
Taki shoved her into the back alley that he had come from, his knife never leaving her neck. He led her back towards the portal to the underworld, very glad that he knew all the back, shadowy ways to it. He didn’t think getting noticed by anyone would be a good thing.
“Don’t fight me and you won’t get hurt,” Taki reminded here. Lilith ignored him walked the way he was guiding her. Not like she could do much now. Not with a knife against her neck.

Brooklyn sniffed and looked over at the entrance of the police station. “She’s giving us free coffee. I can feel bad about anything.” He retorted. He looked over at Johnny and raised an eyebrow. “Would you like the money? I’m not going to use it.” He sighed and rested an elbow on the table, cradling his head with his hand. “Besides, it’s not like I can’t get more.”
Brooklyn looked over at the station, boredom evident on his face. He knew he was right about the target showing up here but that didn’t overcome the tedium of waiting. “So, tell me.” He tried, wanting to break up the silence. “Why are you here? I see you talking to those idiots in the press conference room all the time. Looking for a bit of field experience?”
~
Noah shook Bryan’s hand and took the offered seat, trying and failing to not appear as nervous as he felt. “Thanks.” He said as he took the photos off Bryan. Noah steeled himself as he looked down at the faces of the people he had been trying to forget.
He spread the four photos out on Bryan’s desk and looked at them individually. It was definitely the same people but they looked different. He paused as he studied the photograph of Tala, eyes noting the hair in its two distinctive points. The photo didn’t reflect the vivid red of the hair that had haunted his sleep the night before. Noah turned his attention from that photo to the one of Rei, understanding about what was different about the men in these pictures dawning. In these pictures, though they all wore an expression of concentrated guardedness, they all had an overall demeanour of calm. Yesterday they had been desperate.
Noah tucked that detail away, unsure of what to do with it, and looked up at Bryan. “That’s them. Except this one.” Noah frowned as he pushed forward the photograph of Taki. “There were only three there yesterday and he wasn’t one of them. I’ve never seen him before.”
~
Rei rolled his eyes at his companions. “It’s nice.” He agreed as he allowed himself a brief moment to bask in the sun. “But so’s home.” He finished. “Come on. F he’s not at the police station by now he probably will be soon.”
Rei began running, not bothering to get agreement from his team mates. H eknew they would follow him. They always did.
Kai rolled his eyes and set off after Rei at a brisk trot. Thankfully the gate they had come through had come out into an alleyway near the police station. He didn’t feel like running. Kai blinked as they came out of the alleyway and into full sunlight, enjoying the warmth of the sun all over again.

Johnny looked down at the money and frowned. "I can't exactly see what i could use it for. I'm rarely up here and its useless back there."
He sighed and leant back in his chair, never taking his eyes off the front doors of the police station.
"I have no idea what i'm doing up here, Brooklyn," he said, "I've never been asked to do missions like this before. My place is down there, not here."
He shrugged.
"Maybe someone has a plan that not even i'm aware of."
He sat in silence for a moment before looking directly at Brooklyn. "Do you always have someone different with you on missions?"
~
Bryan nodded and took the photo of Taki away from the rest. "He wasn't at the scene but he is linked to all three."
He gathered the other photos up and walked over to Lilith's desk, placing them in the case folder she had been looking through earlier. It occurred to him that she still hadn't come back yet but he ignored it for the moment.
"Did you see who did the shooting yesterday?" He turned around to face Noah again.
~
Tala shrugged and started to jog as well. He caught up to Kai and kept pace with him.
"He seems to be eager about this," he commented absently. "I hope this doesn't turn out like yesterday did."
~
Taki walked on in silence, a million and one thoughts going through his mind. He wasn't sure waht he was going to do once he got back to the base. What was he going to with the girl?
And how on earth was he going to explain this one to the other three? Especially after getting angry about them involving innocents.
He sighed and made himself look straight a head. Focusing on getting to the portal before he worried about anything else.
Lilith was trying very hard to ignore the blade being held against her neck but wasn't succeeding. Her neck was stinging from where it had nicked her before, reminding her that this guy wouldn't hesitate in hurting her.
Oh God. She raised her eyes to look at the sky, trying not to cry. That was definitely not the best train of thought. There was a high possibility that she wouldn't survive this.
Her captor brought her to an abrupt halt, making her eyes snap down to look in front of her.
She blinked. A rock wall?
Taki took the knife away from her neck and put it away. He wasn't going to need it to control her once he got her through the portal.
"What? Are you going to bash me into a wall?" she asked incredulously.
"Maybe." He held up his hand to the wall, waiting for it to respond to his touch.
Lilith stared at his hand and the rock, completely confused. What is this madman doing?
Her eyes suddenly widened as his hand disappeared into the wall and he started dragging her towards it. She closed her eyes in anticipation of a collision.
There was none.
She one eye and then the other, looking around. She was in a dark cave with a tunnel leading out of it.
"What?" She whipped around to stare at the wall she had just walked through. There was definitely no hidden whole there. She had definitely walked through it.
She whipped her head around to gaze at Taki with wide eyes, startled.
"Y- you just pulled me through a wall!" She shot at him.
"Yes, i did." This was amusing.
She looked back at the wall again. "How is that even possible?!" Her voice had become squeaky from shock.
