Oh dear, it seems as though he's been caught. “Ah, well... that'd be fine too.” he replies to Blackbirch, before turning the appeal towards Fi. “Is it alright with you?” He really doesn't want to 'steal Fi's thunder', but in spite of himself, his budding curiosity is having a hay-day tonight. It's not that Basil hasn't seen his fair share of the old structures throughout his lifetime, some of his own relatives have had some very splendid homes of their own... the significant difference here, was that this one was owned by one who may very well have helped build them!

“I've been woodworking ever since a few seasons past graduating. I shape tools mostly, though I'll get the odd commission now and then...” he offers in answer to Blackbirch's question. “... though it's nothing as grand as the scale you have here. How did you manage all this, if you don't mind me asking?” he adds meekly.

His eyes gleamed in quiet triumph as Basil reacted in the way that Blackbirch hoped, no, expected to. Perhaps Fi's line of work is well-suited for the elder, but alas: wood is his one and only passion, and he would never dream of dabbling in anything else. He listened with interest as the young adult spoke of his experience with the material as a crafter. He's very humble, he muses, that's a good quality to carry. However... Basil will need to show him that he has the confidence, as well. If one doesn't believe they're capable of doing a certain task, then what's the point?

"Ah, so you're a crafter, eh? And one who even dabbles with wood. Very, good, very good," He said aloud, "Though really, grand isn't the sort of word I'd use to describe my home. I would think of it more as...a never ending project, so to speak."

He opens a wing and points while he speaks about his creations. "I simply work on them when I have extra time to. The key to making these sorts of things is to have a lot of patience, I'd say, as well as a good dose of persistence." At the end of what is now the vague answer for Basil's question, he flicks the tip of his wing towards the largest of his trees, with the wrap-around platform. "A good workshop helps, too, and is the first part of the tour. That is, if you're inclined to take it, Fi."

Even as an 'outside' party, Fi listened with increasing interest while glancing at the wood beneath her feet, and even doing a sort of testing shuffle. Building was a far cry from making traps, and utterly outside the scope of her abilities, but it was still fascinating - with a practicality she definitely appreciated. She was absolutely with Basil...this was grand!

At her Great Uncle's question, she looked up again with an enthusiastic, "Of course!"

Well, isn't this exciting? Now imagine if only father were here to see him now. Hah!

Basil casts a quick look back behind from whence they came, nearly expecting to see the disapproving glare of a dubious 'someone'; the haunting, faceless being of expectation. Silently chiming its criticisms and rebukes from afar... no, enough of that!... not tonight for goodness sake. He's sick of dealing with these phantom beings. These insistent memories! How many times will he be forced to struggle with himself on this?! The fretting and paranoia needs to come to an end, and now.

Through a rare force of will, Basil sprouts an almost stupid-looking grin as he waits expectantly in anticipation of the offered tour. This is a start... this would be his new family. Time to start behaving like it.

A grin edged its way across Blackbirch's beak before he said, "Alright then, let's go." And with that, he quickly unfurled his wings and pushed himself off of the platform. His feathers quietly caught the wind and he used the current to glide the fairly short distance it was to the largest of the trees in his territory.

When Fi and Basil land on the large wrap-around platform, they'll first notice the sturdiness of the wood from which they perch on, and second, they'll notice many scrap materials or unfinished carvings scattered around. He may be a creative and wood-working genius, but as far as keeping things tidy, he definitely falls short on.

"Feel free to look around as much as you'd like," He starts, "This is my workshop. Many ideas and projects are born and then made here....as it should be with most crafters, anyways. If you have any questions, feel free to ask - nothing is too stupid when it comes to broadening your knowledge."

He'll be keeping close but furtive tabs on Fi and Basil as the couple take a look around, and more specifically, to Basil. If he sees anything that may look promising, it could be a good night for the young crafter.

(I was thinking maybe Fi and Basil could talk amongst themselves and maybe Basil could mention a few of his own projects that he has worked on, as well as anything else that needs to be said. xD Perhaps after Birch has made his decision, we could just fade to the trio looking at the rest of his territory and overall catch up to end the RP. What do you guys think?)

On the new platform, Fi again had a look at the wood beneath her feet, tapping on it curiously with her talons. It was fascinating, in a similar way to Basil's crafting, but taken to a larger scale. The idea that someone could start with a tree and get to something like this was almost mind-boggling. Though she couldn't see it with the professional eye her mate probably could, she definitely liked what she saw.

As they looked around, she mused to the Wildtype, "Wouldn't it be nice to have something like this?"

((That's cool with me~ 8D))

“Mmm...” Basil nods in agreement, still with the mild grin. “I could get some of that clutter cleared out of the hollow, maybe? I don't think I can fit many more of your busted traps in there.” he adds cheekily.

At Blackbirch's encouragement for questions, a thought has begun to dawn on the young Wildtype; ... is there, perhaps, something more to this tour then just... touring? Why the sudden interest in 'the broadening of one's knowledge'? Seems a bit odd...

“Well, I suppose I do have a few questions, but for starters... how do you fasten all this into place?“ he asks. The problem had/has often perplexed him as a crafting novice, even though the concept's base traditions are only barely understood in his mind as it is. He figures covering 'the basics' should be a good place to start... without (hopefully) high-jacking the conversation entirely.

"With rods," He quips, "Long, wooden rods that are tightly fit within holes of the structure. It's a bit rudimentary, but it's the best that we can do with limited materials, and really, it's not....bad." His feathers ruffle in recollection of the older days when he was just a new apprentice, but the memory was swift: it had gone as quickly as it came and embed itself within his mind. "No, no, not bad at all. It's just a different way of doing things, and it gets the job done efficiently. All of my structures are stable because of it."

Well, there does seem to be an interest in the area of study, but not enough to make him want to pursue anything just yet. He'll wait just a few moments more before taking them into an entirely different direction of family talk.

"I'll un-bust them eventually. Maybe." Fi chuckled, ruining her mock-offended expression. Otherwise, she remained quiet and listened to the males.

((Fff sorry. :< Somehow I didn't notice it was my turn. *lose*))

“Hmm.” Basil smiles in response to Fi, before looking back towards her great uncle. “Is there really much difference in how much wooden rods could support over the alternative? What else could you use?” he asks, fervently hoping that he's not asking the dreaded 'stupid question'. “I mean, do you rely on the natural form of the tree for the majority of it's stability, or is there some other way around that?”

"The difference ....honestly, it's not much of a difference. We are no longer in a position to make hard metals, so we make do with the materials that we have, and we do it in the best possible ways that we can harness, which is a never ending process." He clicked his beak in his own agitation, "And me being reminiscent isn't making it better."

"It is best to move on," He finally remarks. Perhaps one day he'll divulge in the older techniques, but for now, that is all he will speak of them. "And for that question..I believe I'll answer it in the way a very wise sentinel once told me. 'You can't build a stable platform on an unstable tree, but you can build an unstable platform on a stable tree.' I thought he said it quite well, don't you?"

His eyebrow ridge lifted, giving a sense of innocence that was hardly there in the plotting Builder. "Is this sort of knowledge something you are interested in, Basil?"

Natural tree structure, hard metals, platform supports...all things Fiercefire really never thought about, or even thought to think about in the first place. She listened idly, with a sort of half-interest. It really wasn't her thing, but most would probably say the same of her traps.

Oh no, now I've gone and done it. Much to Basil's chagrin, his question appears to have made Blackbirch uncomfortable some how. He should have thought through what he was asking more clearly... or maybe... bah, it was a stupid question. The look of disappointment on Basil's features is fairly evident for all but a few moments, until he's posed with the short parable. It takes him a few seconds to work it out in his head before responding. “That makes sense, I suppose.” Truth be told, it hadn't really been the answer he was looking for, but then again, he may not have worded it the best way.

He'd been struck with a certain idea not many days ago; one of Fi's hanging traps had originally put him onto the thought. What if... it were possible to suspend one of these platforms so as it would be able to do something similar?... the part where it snapped into the air after being set off. Chances are it was a poor idea, not necessarily very practical, but it got him to thinking just the same.

“Yes sir, I think so. I don't really know that much, but it's something I've always been curious about.” he answers, reverting back to some of his prior formality. He'd work up to using his proper name eventually. For now, the familiarity would take getting used to.

"Well then...it's always good to broaden your horizons, as I said earlier," His eyes give an almost mischievous gleam when he finally heard something that he was certainly looking for: previous interest. The fact that the boy was actually giving him good questions certainly helped as well. "I hope you continue to research so as to satisfy your curiosity. You never know what you may find yourself in."

And with that, he had decided on one thing: Basil definitely had the potential, and he will look further into the matter and contact him later if all things worked out in his favor. But for now, it is time to do something he hasn't done in many, many years: get together with family and catch up.

"Unless there's anything else you'd like to see here, I can continue the tour back to my hollow, where we can divide that delicious looking hare you brought," He said as he took steps towards the edge of the platform. "Tell me, Fi, was that one caught from one of your traps?"

[unless you guys want to continue, I think this is a good point to say that they continued back to his hollow and spoke of other random family stuff. x: ]
