A smirk flickered across her face, upon seeing the challenge this other dragon presented. Ooh how fun. Something entertaining! She chuckled, a ripple of excitement starting from somewhere inside and shooting outwards, like a spark, turning into a flame. "I will play your game, Articuno, but do not think I will go easy on you!" she laughed. Her tail lashed as her body did a little flick, like a serpent in the water, she seemed to swim through the air, darting forward to try and outrace her companion.

Oh, how much more enjoyable travel was with someone to spend it with. And to think, she almost declined his offer. Maybe it was good to have a little trust every now and then. The air slipped past her like liquid over a rock. That was the ingenious nature of P'an Lun scales, their small, smooth texture lessened air resistance, but her wings and feathers were a drawback, only creating more drag. Unless she used her wings, they only got in the way.

Doing something unusual, she decided to try something. She unfurled her wings, throwing them open like crimson blankets grip the sky. She would try the more conventional method, and see if it gave her any luck.

With a laugh, Articuno smiled as the pan'lun accepted his challenge. He hadn't had a good race in awhile, so he was glad to have run into Zephyiote for this opportunity, as well as to be able to help her out in general. After giving her another glance, he focused on the tree in the distance and worked on optimizing his speed.

For a moment or so, he flapped his wings down hard to bring himself higher above the ground. As he did so, he pressed his arms against the length of his body and kept his legs back to try and make himself as streamline as possible. He had to do this, especially since working to ascend was slowing him down slightly.

It may have slowed him down now but he had a plan.

When he felt that he was high enough, the hybrid quickly tucked his wings back and began to dive down towards the tree. He had doubts he would be able to dive all the way to their local destination, especially considering he couldn't go too steep or he wouldn't really go anywhere, but it should give him a nice lead if everything went as planned.

So down and towards the tree he went, with his feathered crest and tail flailing wildly as he cut through the air.

Zephyiote growled, seeing Articuno get ahead. Furiously her wings ripped and tore at the air, trying to go faster. Her tail lashed like a giant rudder, her legs trailing behind her. She set herself at an incline as well, calculating quickly in her head the degree to maximize speen and distance, and not going down too fast. Of course, it wasn't perfect, she could only estimate the distance to the tree, but she was pretty good at judging distance, etc. Extra eyes definetely helped with that.

Zephyiote couldn't ever recall ever actually having a 'race'. But it wasn't something you needed to learn. The game of chase...every half intelligent animal knew it. Particularly predators.

She snorted, seeing for just a moment her breath come out in a poof of moisture in the chill air, before it parted around her head as she shot threw it. No breaking. No stopping. No giving up! Articuno was going to beat her! The tree was rapidly approaching, and her course would run her into it, if she didn't break quickly. Maybe her calculations were a little too perfect?

As he sped down towards the earth and the tree in particular, Articuno could slowly see Zephyiote coming up from behind out of the corner of his eye. The dive was a rush, and he tried to push himself to go even faster. Faintly, he could feel Pagos clinging to his foot feebly, trying to not be blown off with the blasts of air that were rushing on by.

Feeling his heart pounding hard in his chest, he watched as the tree drew closer and closer. If he wasn't careful, he'd end up crashing into it or into the earth. Chances were that it was the same case for his current rival. Still, he didn't want to give up a whole lot of speed, so as he neared the 'checkpoint', he twisted his body to bank off to the right, spinning through the air as he did so. Because of this, he couldn't tell who actually won, as his back was to the tree when he flew past.

Quickly, he righted himself and shot upwards to slowly decrease his speed once more.

Sometime ago, Pagos did lose his grip. Thankfully, Frio was doing her best to keep up with the two crazy speeding dragons and managed to catch the salamander. At a much slower pace, she came down to the grassy ground to drop off the lizard safely.

Zephyiote didn't see who reached the tree first. All she saw was the tree, and then...

WHAM!

It was like two boulders colliding. There was a great flurry of leaves thrown out and around, the snapping of branches or bones, and a great groaning as the tree gave way and toppled to the ground. Zephyiote crawled out of the wreckage and righted herself, spitting out leaves and the like. She'd rammed it with the top of her head, the plate like top that served to protect painters from falling boulders doubling as a ramming implement, and her horns serving to only increase the damage to the tree, and to make it easier on her. She laughed, mouth turning up at the corners as her lips parted good naturedly. Heck, even her peacock feathers were intact!

She stuck out her tongue, pulling off a leaf that didn't want to get off. "Ha! Beat that!" she laughed, standing up on her hind legs to brush off debris clinging to her belly. No matter that it was accidental, she still thought it was funny. To think, she bested a tree in close combat! Not that it entailed much bragging rights, but to think she ran into it at full speed...how amusing. Her eyes' second lid, the ones that allowed her to see underwater, also served to protect them in times like this. Very much like a crocodile. Or something of that nature.

She tilted her head up, took a deep wiff, and sighed. "I smell food!"

Having heard a loud collision, Articuno spun about in the air to see what had happened. To his surprise, he didn't see the tree standing any more, but instead a pile of wood and leaves. Quickly, he came down to land to see if Zephyiote was alright. He soon found this to be the case as she emerged from the rubble looking quite in tact. How she managed to get away unscathed, he couldn't be sure, but it was still a relief nonetheless.

Laughing at this, he shook his head and sat down on his haunches, taking a moment to catch his breath.

"Hehe, I believe you've won this one my friend."

Shakily, Pagos, crawled towards Articuno before flopping down at his feet. The Salamander has had several moments like that before, and he never enjoyed them much.

For a moment, the hybrid glanced down and pet the lizard in apology, but the scent of prey also hit him. Quickly, a smile returned to him, bringing him back to his feet.

"As do I! We better get hunting then right?"

Zephyiote laughed. "I will win any competition, if being headstrong comes into play." she gestured at the fallen tree. "Quite literally in this case."

Zephyiote watched the rather frazzled salamander, taking a step closer, and lowering her head, to sniff at him carefully, while not intruding on his space too much. "He looks like he is on fire, but...is he hot to the touch?" she stood back up, and shook her head. Her curiousity was distracting her. What she wanted was food.

Her head turned side to side, trying to discern the direction. It smelt like deer. Good. Zephyiote loved Venison. Ahead, not more than a hundred meters, was the actual tree line, where the real forest began to start. Poor tree she'd just knocked over, had been standing relatively by itself. She padded forward a few steps, then looked back over her shoulder at Articuno. "Flying or walking?"

PostPosted: Mon Nov 10, 2008 11:37 am

Looking at the felled tree, Articuno laughed again before looking down at Pagos. The flames were a bit deceptive in the case of the fiery little creature, but he was certain that salamanders would be able to burn others if they really wished to. He would imagine that doing so would exert quite a bit of energy however. It actually surprised him some that Pagos didn't eat a whole lot, considering it had to be quite costly to have a constant flame going on.

"He's a little hot, but it's not so much that it hurts to keep contact with him. I guess if you make him angry enough, he can burn you though."

After patting the lizard a little more, he let Pagos crawl up his arm to go back to his spot on his back. Once that was done, he took in a deep breath, smelling the same prey that Zephyiote had picked up on. It smelled quite delicious in his opinion, and he couldn't wait to be able to sink his teeth into some nice meat.

"Hm... walking would do for now. It might be a little hard to swoop down on some prey with all the trees around," he said while staring at the treeline not too far away, "Should we go after two? Or do you think that would one be enough for the both of us?"

Zephyiote guffawed. "My dear Articuno, ten deer would not be enough. Catch what you want, I will not bother you with my needs." Her tone was even through the whole thing, so it was impossible to tell whether she was exagerating or not. Walking was good. Swooping was a little hard with so many trees. If you wanted to keep your wings intact, anyway.

She set off at a brisk trot, making a beeline for the trees. No doubt she would feel compelled to take a short nap after a meal. It was annoying to fly on a full stomach, to say the least. There was a rather joyful bounce to her step. She liked these little excursions of discovery. No matter the danger at the end, there was food to be had no, rest, and idle chatter to enjoy. On the horizon, very, very faintly, were hints of the sun's arrival. She quickened the pace a little. The deer were easiest to catch at dawn, before the sun rose, and at twilight. Once the sun was up, they tended to take more care to hide themselves. How bothersome. "We had better hurry, Articuno."

PostPosted: Mon Nov 10, 2008 12:08 pm

"Haha, so be it!"

With a grin, he began to head towards the woods with a fairly fast gait. From behind, Frio darted ahead, in search of possible fruits or berries that she preferred over meat. Pagos remained on Articuno's backside, deciding it would be best to mooch off of the dragon's meal. He didn't really need a whole lot of food anyway, having the metabolism of a normal reptile more or less.

Nodding to Zephyiote, Articuno glanced towards the sky before tucking his wings back and rushing into the forest. Though, as he went in, he slowed his pace down. He would need to be quiet if he were to try and catch the deer off guard.

So as he moved through the trees, he kept his senses sharp, headed towards the scent trail that seemed to be strongest. He couldn't hear much in terms of what sounded like a deer walking around, so scent and possibly his eyes would have to be his primary senses to rely on now. It took him a little while, but over all, it wasn't too long before he spotted a splash of a tannish hue amongst the woods.

A closer look told him it was a stag, standing not too far away. Licking his chops, he ducked down and slowly crept forward. Articuno knew that his bright blue body was horrible for camouflage, so he most likely wouldn't be able to sneak up on it completely. So before long, he broke off into a run to give chase to the beast.

Zephyiote wove her way through the denser brush like a snake in brambles, slipping through gaps that looked too small, over rocks, coiling around trees. Silent too. Zephyiote was a versatile predator, and could come across as sadistic, when chasing down prey. She had lost track of Articuno, but that wasn't really a problem. What, with such keen senses, he would be easy to find. Not to mention she could simply call out or whatever. No, what she focused on now was food.

All four ears flickered, as she took another step, treading on careful toes. Deer. Two of them. A mom and a baby. And they were close. No more than thirty feet away. She felt a little shiver of anticipation ripple down her back. Food was so close!

With a snarrl, she surged forward, forsaking the veil of stealth for open charge. There was a great snapping and cracking as any branches in her way were tore from their trunks. The deer turned tail and rain, panic fueling their drive. But Zephyiote had her hunger, her size, and her experience.

It was an intricate weaving dance. The deer, fleet and nimble, bounding over any obstacle, and small to easily skirt any objects that Zephyiote had to go around, or knock over. More than a few stray rocks and logs were shattered or thrown. The deer, in their terror, made a mistake, and dashed through a clearing. This gave Zephyiote a chance, and her legs extended in huge leaping bounds. She snapped up with baby without breaking stride, and set her sights on the mom, who at this point disappeared back into the forest.

Zephyiote followed suit, a flash of aqua from her tail as she stole away into the dark wood. It was a fierce race, to be sure. But the deer started to tire before she did, Zephyiote could see it in slightly delayed reactions and movement. All it would take was one slip up, and then she would have her meal. That moment came when the deer tried to scale a steep ridge. It had rained just the day before, and debris caked the mud, giving it a deceptive appearence. When the deer tried to go up, the ground gave way, and he slid back down. Game over. Zephyiote's jaws snapped shut around its back, breaking the bones with a crunch. She shook it vigorously, in the manner of a dinosaur, breaking the creatures neck.

She would try and find Articuno now. The ridge didn't pose a problem to her like it did the deer, and in fact, it was to her benefeit. The deer was snatched up in her hind legs, her talon like feet a perfect adaptation for carry food, a difference from the typical, paw like feet of Pan'Lun. No trees grew on the incline, which made getting air borne easy. She circled above in the sky, prize held tight in trailing hindquarters. She was tempted to make some sort of noise, to call him, but didn't want to disturb any prey he might be stalking. She wasn't aware of his methods of hunting. Hers were variable, depending on the situation.

She looked forward to landing, and actually getting to chow down. The little faun, while tasty, was not much of a meal to speak of. Even this would serve only to satiate her. But that was no matter. She wouldn't waste Articuno's time by making him wait arond while she hunted. Those wouldn't be proper manners, now would they?

The two rushed on through the trees and brush as quickly as they could through such terrain. To those standing by they might have just seen a blur of brown flowed by a larger blue blur zipping on past. And slowly, as the chase went on, Articuno inched closer and closer to his target with each turn or weave they made. This wasn't his normal method of hunting, but it would do given his environment.

As he came up from behind, he pressed his legs to push his body forth more. And when the time was right, he kicked the earth powerfully with his hind legs to launch him towards the deer's behind. His claws, outstretched, grabbed onto the stag's rump and effectively dragged it down. Without wasting another moment, he snapped down onto the deer's throat, hoping to either slice through its jugular or break its neck. Whichever happened first.

The prey beast struggled, but it was to no avail. Before much longer its body went still as the earth itself. This hunt was a success.

Happy with his catch, Articuno grabbed a firm hold of the stag and took flight. It was a bit difficult to fly well enough with the extra weight, but he wasn't going far anyway. As he took in several deep breaths, he scanned the ground for any sight of Zephyiote as he moved just above the tree tops.

Before much longer, he found her a little ways and began to decend towards her to join the pan'lun for their meal. Grinning, he touched down and dropped the carcass, noting that his companion had been quite successful as well.

"Glad to see you got a nice catch yourself, Zephyiote" he said before promptly beginning to dig into the meat.

Pagos took the moment to scamper down from Articuno's backside so that he may get a few bites of the tasty flesh himself. For now, Frio had yet to return, but she most likely was eating whatever food she came across at the location she found them.

Zephyiote didn't waste time descending to join Articuno. Her catch was on the ground no longer than a moment before she unzipped it with expert teeth, and began to dine. While extremely appreciative of good food, Zephyiote didn't have a particularly discriminatory palate. Flesh, skin, fat, and bone passed down into her gullet, at a rather remarkable speed. It was habit. Food was hard to steal when it was in someone elses stomach, and even though she didn't fear anyone stealing her food, it was a remnant from...she didn't know when. Maybe it was just animal instinct.

She made quick work of it. And a minute or two later, she sat up satisfied. There was nothing left of it. No hooves, no organs, nothing, but a pool of blood on the ground. She chuckled to herself, and set about cleaning the blood on her talons, on her hind legs from carrying him, then licking it off her lips. It was good. She was moderately satisfied for now. She lay down in contentment, legs folded, her head still raised though. Not wanting to appear impolite to Articuno.

"My my...that was quite good," she commented.

PostPosted: Mon Nov 10, 2008 7:42 pm

While he ate, Articuno remained silent, not wanting to waste much time on words when he could be filling his belly. But before long, he heard Zephyiote speak up. However, when he looked, the deer she had caught had miraculously disappeared!

Blinking a bit in disbelief, he glanced down at his own meal. The dragon had only gotten about a fourth of it eaten at this point. And he thought he was eating quick.

"Wow... You really wolfed that down fast," he said with a light chuckle.

It took him a little longer, but eventually there was nothing left of his own meal. Feeling quite satisfied, he stretched out and let a belch escape him.

"Ah excuse me," he said apologetically before sitting back and starting to preen his feathers. Between the race and hunting, his wings and tail feathers especially were getting slightly tattered and whatnot. It was a bit tedious, but at this point it was almost an unconscious instinct of his to fix up his feathers if they need to when he's free.

While waiting for Articuno to finish, Zephyiote preened herself more. Teeth carefully combing through her mane, her tail fluff, her arms, shoulders, everywhere she could reach. It was deeply frustrating she would never be able to preen the feathers on the back of her neck. Those glorious long peackcock feathers, with their crimson azure eyes...forever out of her reach. Unless she felt like pulling them out, but that would defeat the point.

She finished when Articuno finished his meal. "Oh contraire, Sir Articuno. Who is to say wolves do not eat like me?" she laughed when he burped, smiling a lot. Something unusual. But it was true, the fact that it was hard to be down when you had food in your belly, pleasant company, and idle company to pass the day away. Of course, it was just beginning to be morning, and a nap felt iminent, and then more travel. But no use pondering silly details.

"No need to be excused. In some cultures, burping is a sign that you enjoyed the meal. Not burping is considered bad manners." She snorted, and stuck her tongue out playfully. "You fly remarkably well, Articuno," drawing on the idle chatter component to a good mood.
