@ sunsetsmile
Oh my gosh that breadbox is cute! I cant people believe throw stuff away vs. donating it....
And i also cant believe someone robbed you at gun point, what the hell is wrong with the world?
If they knew you, i'm sure they would feel like crap and want to die stare
@ momoxhime
I would be a Freegan before i would steal, just because i dont want a criminal record - ever.

Thanks, Pixie!---it was pretty scary, scarier after it was over! eek What was scariest was standing in line at the grocery store checkout years later when the same person stepped up from the other side, excused himself, and told the checker he forgot, he meant to grab a pack of cigarettes----I looked up and stared straight into his eyes! Just suddenly went cold to my very core. I saw his obituary in the newspaper a few years ago. Maybe it's awful, but I really felt relieved. sweatdrop

sunsetsmile I never could understand why anyone would want to steal anything, either. I've had my house burglarized (twice), and been robbed at gunpoint in my own house. Good grief! If you need/want something that I have that badly, just ask me for it! Wow, that's horrible! I knew a guy once that used to mug people for change to get booze, then one day he got mugged and he felt really horrible and never mugged anyone again. I live in a crappy town but luckily I've never had trouble, probably cos I don't look like I'd be worth stealing from :/

No. My parents would disown me. On my own in a few years...I still wouldn't, but I would be very limited on what I buy and only buy organic, vegetarian, and eco-friendly stuff. That might be crazy, but idc. I'll go somewhere, maybe I'll be Omish. I wouldn't mind, I hate technology.

I wouldn't ever do that and I don't think it's a good idea.
Sure if you're a restaurant with an overload of left over potatoes from the other night, donation is great.
But going through dumpsters is complete unsanitary. All sorts of germs and diseases manifest in dumpsters. It's not a good idea for us to do that, the human immune system cannot take it.
What I usually do when I have old food. As long as it's not dairy product, I take it out to the field near my house for all the deer, coyotes, rabbits or whatever else is hungry can have.
I never just toss out perfectly good food, that would be senseless.

I'd have to say I don't think I would ever willingly dumpster dive for food unless I was starving to death. I have no problem diving for items that I could use, though.

D: I don't really think I could do that, it's a little over board, even for me. I'd rather save that for the homeless. u____u

Nutmeg the Nerdfighter I'd have to say I don't think I would ever willingly dumpster dive for food unless I was starving to death. I have no problem diving for items that I could use, though. Around here, people will go through large items left out for trash. It's not that uncommon, if you don't want something to leave it on the curb for garbage and someone will come by and see it and take it.

That happens all the time in my neighborhood, especially with furniture but sometimes with other things. I've snagged fans (perfectly good fans! well, filthy, but...), a rabbit cage and an aquarium from a pile of like a dozen rodent cages and aquariums eek (trying to figure out if I can convert either to a rat cage, as the girlfriend has vetoed rabbits as pets sad ), a weird synthesizer from the '70s (I rescued it from the rain but then gave it away to someone who actually wanted it), a sea chest... People generally put stuff like that out several days before the trash is picked up to increase the odds of it going to someone who wants it smile

The best Valentine's Day gift EVER (for me)---and it's a dumpster dive treasure!
It's a vintage Hamiltom drafting table, oak and cast iron, with a 36" x 60" top. Missing one leg--just a small piece of oak will fix that, and it needs a new drawing surface. I just peeled off the original linoleum top, all in one piece. A "historically correct" top would cost about $400.00, but you can bet I won't wait for one of those (or put that much money into it.)
I'll post a picture when it's together.
I AM JUST SO HAPPY!!!!!! rofl heart rofl heart rofl
Don't be afraid to look! pirate

I think freeganism is wrongly paired with dumpster diving.
You don't have to dig through the trash to get free stuff. You can ask just as easily.
I used to wait around until they came out to do the trash at Dunkin Donuts and just ask them if I could have the bagels. I only had a problem once. (You learn their schedule quickly, and grab the bags after they're dumped.) razz
They always keep their bagels/donuts separate from their trash, so you've got clean baked goods from the day before. wink
And on the subject of stealing, I don't really like the idea of robbing people...
But if me stealing a couple veggies from the grocery is going to fill me up enough so I can sleep tonight, you better believe that I'm gonna have those tomatoes.
Edit- @Sunset: Any updates on that table? I'd love to see some pictures. Just reading about it, I got incredibly jealous. xp

I'm having one heck of a time finding a place for that drafting table---in this little house, it's just huge! I was in such a hurry to fix it---replaced the missing leg with a piece of 2x4, didn't even run it through the table saw to get the right thickness, and now it's just sitting here with the tabletop next to it until I make room! It's almost mocking me! I think I'm just going to use a piece of masonite for the top until I can find a smooth piece of vinyl to use upside down. Hopefully it will be nice enough outside to haul it out there and get a few pictures with it all assembled this weekend. I'll try.

I've got exciting news! (for me at least.)
A close friend of mine just got a job at a local bakery, and come to find out they're tossing their donuts as well! gonk
So I'm having her put all the donuts in a bag and put them in the dumpster last whenever she closes, and I'm gonna start letting people I know that they're there. blaugh
The people that own/work there seem pretty straight forward with trashing unsold foodstuffs, though. What's trash is trash, do as you please with it.
So with the exception of the few girls that are, say... Less than pleasant.. they're more than likely to bag all of the food apart from the trash if you asked them and told them the situation. heart

I would have to try it before I could decide or not ... I'm always up for trying something new at least once.
Companies are so wastefull and it seems if they can't make a profit off of it then they don't want anybody to have it.
I worked at the sears outlet store for 4 years and sometimes there would be clothes, shoes, and other items that were too damaged to sell. Some I will admit were unwearable (it's amazing how many clothing items we got handed back to us at the fitting rooms with menstral blood and a wide range of disgusting things on them) and should have gone in the trash. But there were a lot of things that they should have donated to either local shelters or to third world countries such as jackets that just had a broken zipper, or shoes that shoe laces magically disappeared. I know that if I had no jacket I would gladly take one that just had a broken zipper instead of not having one at all. The worst part was that they didn't simply throw the clothes in the garbage, they would cut them up first. I guess in the past people had gone through the dumpsters and taken the clothes out, ... who cares? You threw it in the trash!
