As soon as Kaela collapsed, Keiran gasped and slowed his pace as he came to a stop a few feet away from her. The sound of muffle sobs reached his ears, which had him utterfly confused. First of all, he didn't know butterflies could cry, and secondly, why would the pretty butterfly girl be crying? Did she not like to be called pretty?
Approaching Kaela carefully, as if a sudden movement might send the girl running again, Keira kneeled down besided her. He wanted to reach out and play with the pretty blue hair, but he didn't want to scare the butterfly girl. So he managed to control himself and kept his hands at bay. "Are you okay, pretty butterfly?" he asked in a soft voice, head tilted slightly as the lines of worry crossed his features.

A gentle voice stirred her out of her panic, soothing it to a mere murmuring apprehension. She slowly raised her head up to face the older boy, oblivious to the tears that streaked her pale face. He had an expression--like Aston, when he'd been kind and sweet. The thought of her older brother hit her like a blow, and she shrank back slightly. But was it possible--that he meant no harm? Such a possibility startled her, but did not sound altogether unreasonable.
"I--I'm not sure." Her voice wavered, but didn't entirely fade away. "Why were you...chasing me?"

Keiran watched the girl with fascination - he'd always been on observer, but remembering what he observed was another thing altogether. But he liked to watch the way people and animals behaved and interacted, and then come up with silly possibilities of what they could be doing.
Right now, however, he was slightly confused as to why she had such ugly streaks of wetness running down her face. Keiran couldn't decide if she was scared or sad, so he decided on a combination of both. When she spoke up, he had to lean forward and turn his head to hear the soft words.
"Chasing? Who's chasing you?" his voice responded in slight alarm, head darting behind him to see if someone was after them. But seeing no one, Keiran then turned to Kaela with a soft gasp. "Are the faeries after you??"

Despite herself, Kaela gave a weak, shy smile. "Faeries? You believe in them?" Surely no one who believed in faeries would be hostile or cruel--faeries were sweet and gentle, and always nice. They were the only ones who would comfort her in those dark times of her past. With a little wince, she pulled herself up into a better sitting position. "I thought you were chasing me," she explained in a clearer, less shaky voice. "But perhaps you weren't?" She wiped her eyes with the back of one hand and looked up at the older boy.
His face was so different from Aston's...concerned and gentle, without a trace of malice. Slightly darker, in a healthy way, and much more open. He almost looked like a faerie himself... Shy and embarrassed, she realized she was staring and looked away. Aston would have slapped her for meeting his eyes in such a way, but the boy did not seem upset. The difference confused her, but encouraged her as well.

Keiran blinked in surprise at Kaela's question, having never met someone who didn't believe in faeries - except the Drill Sergeant, but he figured that big evil man only said such things to make him sad. Tilting his head and furrowing his eyebrows in confusion, Keiran rocked slightly on his heels. "Of course I believe in faeries. Those glows that you see in the trees at night? They're from the faeries!"
A pout crossed his face as he frowned at the girls' sad features, making Keiran feel slightly guilty. He hadn't meant to chase her, but he just wanted to touch her pretty hair. And he hated to see other people sad, because it made him sad, and he rather enjoyed being happy. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to chase you. I just wanted to look at your pretty hair."
Smiling brightly, Keiran resisted the urge to reach out and stroke the soft locks of hair. He rarely saw such a beautiful shade of blue, and it kind of reminded him of a butterfly flying across the open skies. "You look like a butterfly."

A faint smile crossed her face. Of course the lights were faeries, but how did he know? She hadn't known about the faeries until Aston started to hurt her, when they'd come and cheered her up. Most said it was her imagination, that she had made it up. "You don't think they're made up, do you?" A soft glow came into her eyes, one that hadn't surfaced for years. "They are--they're real..."
His mention of her hair puzzled her. Was she pretty? Aston only said such things when he wanted something from her...she shuddered imperceptibly at the thought. "Whyever would you want to look at it?" She lifted a silky ringlet, wondering whether the curls were ugly, like Aston had told her so often, or pretty like this boy said. Only barely did she catch the flash of unhappiness on his face. "I'm sorry--I mean, for running away." Perhaps he was hurt, like she had been so often. She didn't entirely understand how others felt, whether they felt the same way she did or differently...
His gentle words stirred her, and encouraged her like the lifting smiles of the faeries. Perhaps he was a faerie... She'd never received such sweet words before--You look like a butterfly-- and was at a loss how to respond. "I--I do?" The image of bright butterflies in the meadow lifted her spirits, and gave her a spark of self-confidence she hadn't had.

Keiran couldn't help but to stare at Kaela with an incredulous expression, shocked that she would dare question the authenticity of his words and the honorable fact that faeries did exist. Blinking several times, he lost all sense of tact and reached forward to grasp her hands in his, smiling and nodding vigorously in affirmation. "Of course faeries are real! You've seen the lights, haven't you? They come to our world from Fairyland to bring us pretty lights!"
Glancing at her, he tilted his head at her next question. Keiran examined her soft blue hair which curled in unnatural ringlets, which only led him to further believe that she was magical herself. He'd never seen anyone else with such interesting hair, after all - and Lora had told him all about what faeries looked like. "Because you have the hair of a fairy! No human has such pretty hair," he answered with a slight 'Duh!' look at her. Then as an afterthought, he nodded and grinned. "Butterfly."

Kaela flinched as her hands were captured in his, afraid she had angered him. Instinct told her to pull away, but when she glanced up at his open, smiling expression it was impossible to remain frightened. And besides...he said he believed in the faeries. "I see them... I see the lights, and the dances, and the sparkles they leave on the leaves at dawn, and sometimes I see them in the swirling mist by the riverbanks at night." Her voice was unconsciously rising in excitement, finally audible to the casual ear.
Then...had she said too much? But he seemed excited, even interested in what she said. Like he cared what she thought. The thought gave her courage to continue. "But is there a Fairyland? Do they come from another world?" She trailed off as he filled her ears with talk of her hair. "Oh, no, I couldn't be a faerie--I don't know much about them at all, only that they are friendly to me...like you." She was talking faster, more confidently than she ever had before. You are rather like a faerie, she ventured shyly.

Keiran listened to her talk, captivated by her soft voice and glowing face, as if she was speaking about the love of her life. The beautiful whisper of her enthusiasm reached his ears like a song, the words filtering through his mind and filling him with a strange warmth. He had never heard someone talk in such a manner, so uncertain yet confident at the same time - it reminded him of the sister he had lost just a few months ago.
Not daring to say a word, Keiran simply nodded and listened to her talk. And when she stopped, he tilted his head curiously as her curiousity piqued up. His eyes blazed with excitement at her question and he nodded vigorously before replying, "Of course there's a Fairlyand!" Then glancing around suspiciously, he lowered his voice to a whisper, "Lora's been there! And she's trying to open a door to their world!"
"And I'm not a fairy!" he replied with laughter, though the comment had him wondering whether it was possible to turn into one. Then he paused and seemed to consider something, looking at Kaela with a thoughtful expression. Nodding his head to himself as if in decision, Keiran grinned. "Want to come help us catch one?"

Kaela nodded slowly, the knowledge making sense. After all, if faeries didn't have a world of their own, why would they sometimes be so hard to find? A smile touched her lips and glimmered in her blue eyes. "Lora...Venlet?" She'd only met the older girl once, and been frightened that time. She looked up at him, meeting his eyes for an instant. "She said she knew who I am, and asked me questions..." Then it dawned on her.
It. Faerieland. Lora wasn't interested in her baby after all! "She asked if I knew where Faerieland was, I think." Did he really want her to help? Could she? Keiran thought she was a faerie, Lora thought she knew where the faeries lived. Perhaps she could help. "I--I'd like that."

Keiran furrowed his eyebrows in confusion at Kaela's question. "Lora vent a let?" He wasn't one to remember names, much less last names, so he had no idea what Kaela was referring to when she said Venlet. To him, it sounded like a bunch of gibberish... like fairy talk! Enlightenment dawned on him and his eyes widened. "Ooh! Did Lora teach you speak Fairy?"
With an excited grin, Keiran grabbed both of Kaela's hands and kenlt right in front of her, glancing into the girl's eyes intently. His eyes shined with excitement, even slight jealousy, and he wondered if maybe it was some kind of girl code to teach each other to speak Fairy. "Since you can speak Fairy, you'll be a great help! Will you teach me to speak Fairy? I want to be able to talk to the Fairies... and sing Fairysongs! And tell Fairytales!" And on he went.

Her eyes widened in surprise and sudden nervousness as Keiran exploded into talk of speaking Faerie. She couldn't speak a word of any other language, but wouldn't he be disappointed if she told him? Yet unwilling to lie--something she only did with Aston, in self-defense--she shook her head, light blue ringlets flying once again. "Oh, no, not at all." Her eyes were threatening to spawn new tears--would he not want to be friends anymore?
"I wish I did...but I don't know Lora well..." Her voice shrank back into nearly whispers again as she hung her head, ashamed. She could see Aston in her mind's eye, yet again, taunting her for her failure. Would she always fail? She wanted to succeed, to grow stronger of heart and be worthy to bond with a wolf, so then she might be able to care for little Jakob herself...
"But, I've seen them, and played with them. They sometimes dance around me as I am falling asleep, and once they left a pretty blue beetle on my pillow." Of course, the beetle could have come from anywhere, but to Kaela it was a gift, for nothing pretty and good happened to her without help.

"Oh," Keiran answered with disappointment, face falling as he pouted slightly at the revelation. He had been hoping that somewhere other than Lora could speak Fairy, since the girl had refused to teach it to him. But at least he had found one other person who knew for a fact that faeries existed. Everyone else simply played along with what they thought was a game - he appreciated that they were nice, but he knew they weren't true believers.
"Oh, Lora is the fairy expert. She's even been to Fairyland! And talked to the faeries, learned to speak Fairy... she knows what they like to eat and how they play!" he continued on, eyes shining brightly once again as he nodded his head vigorously with each of his statements. Keiran grinned foolishly as he considered what he would do should he ever get to Fairyland. But first, they had to catch one.
"Oh wow, are they fun to play with?" Keiran asked as his eyes widened in amazement - he'd never played with a fairy before. And to receive a present from them, he was starting to think that Kaela the Fairy Queen. "Wow, you must be very special if they gave you a blue beetle!"
Tilting his head slightly, Keiran decided that Kaela must know a lot about faeries. "Lora says they like hot sauce... do you know what else they like?"

Relieved, she relaxed again. He wasn't angry with her. "But I thought she was trying to find a door to Faerieland...how has she been there?" And then, after a horrifying thought, "Why would we want to catch a faerie? What if we accidentally hurt one?" She could never forgive herself if she helped to hurt one of the faeries who made her happy when she herself was hurt.
"But yes...they are fun, if you mean that they make you happy." At least that was what she thought fun meant. "But I don't think I'm anything special... they like to make anyone happy. I think they hate to see people sad, and making us happy makes them happy." Unaware that she had just associated herself with Keiran in the simple word, us, she went on quietly describing the pretty flowers she saw them around the most. Without fully realizing it, she had somewhere in this odd experience made a friend.
