"Oh, so you didn't really know her too well, did you?" Shee giggled. "I'd certainly want to know about who'd marry a man like that, if he's as bad as you say he is. But I'm sure he's not. It happens between people who are close that things just tend to get... amplified."
Shee felt a scoff come out of her mouth inadvertently before she could stop it. After an awkward pause of trying to think of something to say, she tried to sidestep lightly around the issue. "I thought I was too."
So she was glad as the conversation turned towards bicycles. "Really!? That would be so much fun! And don't worry about the season. That's what the endless hallways are good for," She continued nonchalantly, and punctuated her remarks with a sage nodding of her head. She knew this from experience.
Shee giggled again at Lai's confusion over the holiday. She hadn't known what Halloween was either, but after having it explained to her about 50 times by an exasperated Wraith (and who knew where he'd learned what it was), she knew all about it. "Halloween is a holiday that they have in Ireland. You dress up, and you scare people, and there's lot of sweet things! It's great!"

"Not really. I have only seen a picture of her. She looks like a nice woman though." Lai shrugged. "He is bad, but he has got his tough guy routine. He is not so bad really. Boisterous is the right word. He likes to be king of the court."
At the scoff Shee let go, Lai cocked his head to the side. Where had that come from? He let it go as soon as the conversation went to bicycles. A more relaxed and enjoyable topic in Lai's opinion.
"Certainly. Just be sure to tell me in advance if you want to use it. That way I can make sure it is in working order. I hope you do not mind that it is a man's style bicycle." He mentioned that because of the high middle bar his bicycle had. Lai knew a woman's bicycle had a far lower one for whatever reason. At Shee's mention of being able to ride in the halls he looked surprised.
"We are? I was worried I would get into trouble if I did such a thing. Extraordinary." A sheepish smile at her giggle.
"I have never heard of it before, but you make it sound interesting. Dress up though? In what?" He had no other clothing, what could he dress up in?

"Well, that's not such a bad thing. Everyone likes to be the centre of attention sometimes, right?"
"I think I could manage. I know it doesn't seem like it, but I assure you, I've been through worse than having to ride a men's bicycle." Shee looked delighted at Lai's surprise at bicycles in the hall. "Well, you probably would. There are some benefits to being in charge, you know."
"Oh, but it is really interesting! I thought it was kind of weird at first, but then, it did kind of remind me of the Asuras and the Mahabharata... so it's not really that odd! And you can dress up in anything you want! It's an excuse to be something completely different than the person you are normally. If you need any help with clothes or anything, you can just ask me. I mean, Wraith would be no help."

Lai smiled. "I prefer not to be." He disliked being the center of attention, it made him feel very nervous and afraid.
"Well, that is good then." He was curious as to Shee saying she had been through worse, but he did not want to pry into her personal business. "Ah." He gave a short laugh. "I guess there are. I will not ride in the halls then. I shall keep my bicycle in my room until spring."
The Russian thought over the Halloween holiday as Shee spoke animatedly of it. It did seem like fun, the way she was describing it. "Well, that does sound like it would make for a good time. Though," He tugged at his skirt. "I only have this set of clothes. Nothing else until I am able to send a letter to my aunt and have her send me some things. But if you have some spare fabrics lying around I am sure I could sew something together."

The corners of her mouth curled up into an almost devious grin. "Don't let anyone else here know that. They're not all as nice as me."
Shee laughed at Lai's remark. He seemed slightly put off as he talked about bicycles in storage. "Well, just let me know if you ever want to go riding in the hallways. I'll make sure Wraith is distracted."
Shee's eyes widened as Lai tugged at his clothing. Only one set of clothes? She couldn't imagine it. "It would be a travesty to wait that long. Why didn't you tell someone earlier? Clothing is not a big issue." Starting as he mentioned sewing, she looked towards him wiht another admiring glance. "You sew too? You provide food AND clothing?" Maybe she could ask him to make her something. Tailors never agreed with her-- her sewing-related relationships had always ended badly. On second thought, maybe she shouldn't, wincing as she thought of her last visit to Chandigarh's bazaars. She shook her head and turned back to Lai. "I do have a lot of fabric lying around though. I like fabrics; they're so pretty and colourful. Oh! Do you want to grab something now?"

"Oh I will not, be sure of it. I am afraid of the torture they could put me through if they found that out!"
At Shee's offer Lai shook his head. "I could not let you get in trouble for distracting your brother for something like that. It is fine, I am a patient man, I can wait." He beamed at her to show her he was fine with keeping his bicycle in storage for now.
"Well," He started, going to tell her the truth. "I did not want to be a bother to anyone about it. Plus, these ones seem to be holding up alright, so I can easily wear these for another few months. It is only the winter I worry about." Her glance made him flush, he had never gotten a look of admiration before.
"Yes. Pretty much anything domestic I can do. It is not seen as masculine in my time, so I tend to keep it quiet, especially the sewing. I have been berated for that sort of thing as it my hobby, my passion. My uncle is a tailor, but he gets more respect as he does it out of necessity." At her offer he nodded.
"Once I just finish putting the rest of my cooking away and clean up a bit I would not mind that at all, if it is okay with you of course. And maybe not grab anything, but browse. I want to read up on this Hallo-ween and the sorts of things you dress up as before starting anything. Maybe get a letter to my aunt back in Tomsk, I am sure she could have several packages here fairly quickly despite the distance."

Shee laughed at Lai's... morality, she supposed. "I know how to handle him best. Don't worry; he never really gets mad at me."
"But... don't you ever want to wear something else? For... variety? Oh, but you're right. It does get cold here. You'll need something thick and resistant to snow. Very resistant to snow." She nodded unconsciously as Lai continued. That was something she realized that had probably been used to, after researching what India had been like when she'd lived there.
"Alright! That's fine with me. But Halloween isn't something you read up on; it's something you experience." She tilted her head and smiled at him again, before bouncing back on her heel and bounding back onto the stool she had been occupying previously, fingers tapping against its wooden side impatiently.

He flushed at her laughter.
"I am sure you do, but still, I would feel bad if he got mad at you because of me." He would hate for someone to take the blame for something he had done, it wasn't fair to the other person.
"I would like to of course." He said, commenting on her question. "Russian clothing from my time. Long shirts and baggy pants tucked into long boots mostly. It was what I wore back home before the time explosion. Yes...Pants would be nice, very nice indeed." He looked down at his shoes; ankle high slip on shoes. "Boots too. I love the snow, but I cannot stand the cold for very long. I was born in Russian winter, you see, so I have a constant need to seek out warmth when it gets cold."
Lai smiled at her. "Why do you not tell me of this Hallo-ween and the sorts of things that people do, get dressed up as, and the like while I clean up my mess in here? Maybe I can get some ideas going while I work."

"I'll find you some pants then-- promise." She herself wasn't too fond of the cold-- but the wonderous nature of snow and all that you could do with it-- snowballs, snow angels, sledding-- made up for living in the mountains. "I can't either. But... if you were born in the Russian winter, don't you think you would have some connection to the cold?"
Her thoughts were rerouted to Halloween as Lai spoke. "Oh! OK. I can do that. So, lots of people dress up as scary things, like witches and monsters and dead things, and scare other people. But you can also dress up as something cute, or pretty, or... really anything. Wraith was a mummy last time, and I was a ghost. And Eponine was... uh, I don't really know what she was. Something green. Moira was a succubus, and Estrelas was... hmm. Maybe I shouldn't tell you what she was. And I think Sam was a pirate? Anyways, lots of stuff to choose from. I haven't decided what I want to be this year. Aaand... let's see. In some places, children go to people's houses and gather candy in a big bag. And in some other places, they do scary dances and play tricks and stuff. And, you can have a party to concentrate all the Halloween fun..."
Shee continued talking, pausing every once in a while as she tried to recall everything she'd learned about Halloween, not quite realizing that she was beginning to ramble.

Lai turned away to start putting what was left away, turning off burners, and cleaning in general. At her query he nodded.
"Oh, I do, but I just tend to get chilled easily. Calling me 'thin skinned' I guess would be the proper saying Miss Shee." Bowls, pans, and utensils went into the sink after Lai turned the faucet on a warm-hot blend. Quickly he rolled his sleeves up past his elbows and got to work scrubbing each thing thoroughly before placing it in the dry sink to his right. He nodded and started to gather ideas as Shee spoke about Halloween and its festivities. It did sound like fun.
"I like the idea of this holiday. Hmm...I wonder if the library has any books with costumes and patterns that I could take a look at? Just to get a better image of what I could do. I think I am getting a foggy idea as you speak Miss Shee." He tossed a smile over at her before bringing more used instruments over to the soapy sink. "A big party sounds like it would be the nicest get together.

"I'll call you thin-skinned then, but don't call me Miss Shee! Just Shee. You're probably older than me at any rate."
Shee fidgeted on the stool, finding that, to her dismay, it didn't spin. Thwarted, she tried to sit still. "I'm sure it does. It's a very big library. It has books on anything you could ever imagine! Wraith adds to it all the time." Failing miserably to sit still, she began to bob her head back and forth to imaginary music. "We are definitely going to have a big party! Since you're such a wonderful cook, maybe you could be in charge of food? We don't really have any cooks here... well, aside from Lhamu, but she probably wouldn't listen to you anyways..."

"Ah, I will try to Mi--Shee. I apologize, it is my way of being polite." Lai was finished with the dishes and he watched the water drain as he dried his hands and forearms on a dish towel. The clean dishes would air dry and later he would put them all away.
"That is good news. I think I just might lose myself in there, not that I would complain." Lai put the towel back on the small rack where he had got it and quickly unrolled his sleeves back down over his pale arms. Turning, he ran his hands over the front of his shirt as though getting imaginary dust off.
"I would like to help in anyway I can. I can prepare food a day or two ahead of time just to make it easier on everyone and on time. That is important for a successful party I think. Though, I will need to know if anyone has any special dietary needs, preferences, or has any allergies to certain things, just to cover all walks of life and to be on the safe side."

"Oh, I would. The library is so... boring. I don't know how you guys stand it."
She paused at his question, thinking. "Well... I'm vegetarian, and so is Wraith. Mmm... I don't think anyone else really has any allergies or anything like that. Midori did mention something about fish once, but I can't remember if she likes them or hates them. Or if she was talking about eating them, or just in general. Huh."
Yawning, she surveyed the kitchen in its entirety. It was too cold now to have a garden party, she thought, disappointed. Maybe the ballroom? But that was much too grandiose. There had to be one suitable place in the compound...

"Ah, but I find it quite nice. Quiet, easy to get ones thoughts together. Though I seem to have left my reading glasses back in St. Petersburg, so I have a hard time reading small print." Lai checked back to see if he had missed anything. Nope, he had gotten everything.
"But a letter to my aunt and her family should remedy that."
The Russian listened and nodded as Shee mentioned her brother and a person named Midori. He figured fish could be alright to do, someone would probably want it, but he would compile a list of dishes and show it to Shee first before anything else.
"I think I shall make a list of various appetizers, main courses, and desserts and run it by you. That way you can pick and choose what would be best for the group as a whole. Does that sound okay?"

Leaning closer to Lai and almost falling off her stool, she squinted, trying to imagine Lai in glasses. It wasn't much of a stretch, she thought.
"That would be fine. Oooh, now you've made me want dessert."
