Marut chuckled as Ehren was bothered by his mane again.
'You wanna get that cut or something,' she joked. It was pretty, far more than her own so she wasn't entirely serious, though he did need to do something with it. Maybe he could 'pay' a squirrel to hold it away from his face.

'How come you feel like that anyway? Did you not go out and meet others as a colt?'
Marut had gone out as much as she was allowed to, and had come across a couple of interesting Soquili, including a very large half-Kalona stallion. She shook her head.

'Nahh, I mean, unless you wanna see if you can find me an early autumn apple? Those are supposed to be nice.' she laughed.
'So if you want to tag along and meet my mother, I guess we should set off, as I don't know exactly where she'll be.'

Eyeing his hair at her comment he snorted. "I have been meaning to do just that for a while now. But finding a creature with the means and willingness to do so is proving to be rather difficult.." He gave his wayward mane a last glare before returning his dark mercury gaze to Marut's own.

Tilting his head, ears flicking briefly as he considered her comment. "I suppose I must not have. Though it seemed a fairly normal foalhood to me and my brothers... " He smiled at her agreement, grateful that she didn't find his desire strange, nor denied him for it. "Thank you, and I shall have to keep my eye open for that apple then.. It is the least I can do in return." He flexed his large wings. After all, he would have no trouble actually acquiring said apple.

'Wow, you'd really get it all cut off?' Marut looked surprised. She got annoyed with her own, but would probably never resort to having it trimmed in anyway.

'Personally I think you suit your mane.' she added quietly, and then changed the subject straight away.

'Yes,' she laughed.
'You find that apple, and follow me, we'll see if we can find my mother.' she turned, getting her bearings and set off, walking slowly at first to let him join her.

Ehren nickered softly, giving his head a flick to send his mane over his back even though he knew it would never stay there. "Yes, but it would just grow again.. and it would be out of its band, so I’m not going to.. At least now its semi-manageable." He replied, flashing her a rare grin of what could almost be playfulness.

"Thank you.." He replied, tilting his head slightly as she swiftly changed the topic, but didn't see anything unusual in it.

When she set off, the tall stallion followed. His long strides swiftly catching up to her before shortening to match her own speed once he was level. Lifting his head he eyed the trees around them before glancing back at Marut with a smile. "Let me know when you see an apple that catches your fancy."

The stallion was definitely lightening up and relaxing now. He was also pleased to be on the move again, letting his strong wings drop as they walked, stretching them without getting in her way.

'The nearest fruit trees are near the Village I think..' Marut said, casting her eyes around for an apple tree.

'So you might just have to owe me it for another day.' she yawned, though it wasn't from boredom, her body had just gone to sleep from standing and talking for so long. She was glad to be on the move again. Her ears flicked as they walked, and she scented the air.

She caught sight of his dropped wings out the corner of her eye, and turned her head to look at him.
'What's it like to fly anyway?'
PostPosted: Mon Sep 29, 2008 1:44 pm

Tilting his head he glanced at her. "The Village?" He had never been there.. was it yet another type of soquili he had yet to meet? He was stunned by how little he actually knew about his world.. really, he had to remedy that as soon as possible, if he was going to be of use to his father.

Looking back at one wing he frowned at it briefly before tilting his head in thought. "Hmm... the best way I can describe it is, liberating..." He finally replied in a thoughtful tone. Folding his wings in to avoid clipping her with one, he lifted them over his back then stretched them out again. They were far larger at full stretch than was apparent when they were tucked at his side, and the shadow from the shimmering limb fell right across Marut, the feathery appendage arching high over her.

"When you fly, there are no trees or anything else to dictate your path... there is also little chance of seeing another wind unless you actively seek them out. It is both joyous and alien in a way.. You can feel utterly alone, or you can entrust yourself to the wind herself and then, you are never alone." The stallion's voice was soft, almost dream-like as he spoke, remembering what it was like to soar high above the world, untouched by anyone, free of everything..

'Yes,' she said as they walked, on the alert now as they walked, not from fear, it was just her usual state of being when she moved around the Kawani lands.

'It's the home of those two-legged creatures, peep-ell I think they are called?' she chuckled, only slightly sure that she'd mispronounced the name. She turned as his wing shadow moved across her body, and watched as he moved them, intrigued by how the wing functioned, the feathers perfectly aligned and formed in rows, from small to the larger pinion ones.

'Sounds marvellous.' she said, looking at his expression as he spoke of flying.
'The only thing that I can do that comes close if when I run full pelt, the ground moving swiftly beneath my pounding hooves.' she smiled, a line wrinkling her nose as she did so.

'You'll have to show me how you fly, I'd love to see you soar.'

The stallion's stormy gaze roamed the area, but he didn't seem overly concerned. But then at his height and muscle bulk, there was little other than skinwalkers or kalonas that could pose any kind of threat to the male.

Looking at the smaller mare at his side he flicked an ear in curiosity. "Peep-eel?" he copied, wrinkling his nose at the unusual word. "Two leggers.... sounds a little like my father when he speaks of the tribesmen he left behind.." Ehren replied, gaze forward as he looked thoughtful. He had been told of his father's past in bits and pieces through his childhood, but only recently did he think he had begun to understand it. If these peep-eel were like his father's old world, then he should at least go and investigate.. there might be clues to his own inheritance.

Pale white ears flicked back as the stallion looked at Marut in surprise, pulled from his musing by her comment. "Now?" Tilting his head he glanced around. The area was plenty open enough for an easy take off and landing.. He supposed there was no reason why he couldn't, it was just a bit of a surprise to be asked to fly for another.

Marut laughed as Ehren repeated her mispronounced word.

'I'm sure it's not that but sounds like it? Anyway, really, don't learn from me, you'll just sound silly.' she nodded, listening.
'Yes? From that other place you mentioned before?' she queried, trying not to sound too nosey, but curious enough to ask.

'Now? If you like, I didn't meant exactly now, but it's really up to you.' Marut wasn't often envious, but of her mother and sister for having wings when she did not. Yes, she was able to admit that she was of them.

Neither of them flew enough in her opinion, her mother had an excuse because her grandmother had managed to permanently injure Neve's wing and it wasn't so strong now. But Maharet..her wings were wasted. She never said it out loud though, she loved her sister really

Ehren nodded, dark gaze moving from the surrounding country to the graceful mare at his side. "Correct.. Though I don't know everything.. our Father comes from a world outside our own, or at least, that is how I understand it. He presided over a country of tribesmen, which I suspect are much like these two-legger 'peep-eel' you mentioned. He arrived in our world in his present form suddenly, this cloth I wear is from his own outfit." The stallion flicked his head high without thinking about it as his mane slipped forwards and tangled round his heavily feathered front limbs.

"I think I should investigate these two-leggers some time.." He murmured to himself, before he was pulled back to their conversation by her words. Tilting his head he regarded her a moment. "No reason why not now, correct?" he answered with a smile. "Alright then..."

Suddenly the massive stallion jumped forwards, muscled body flowing with surprising grace into a loping canter. His long tail lifted, trailing out behind as he shot past her. After three strides he spread his wings, the great shimmering limbs flashing in the sun briefly before they flared and beat downwards. The stallion's muscles bunched sending him skywards, the great wings powering him into the air. Muscles pistoned, the powerful movements of his wings sent a wash of cold air downwards to flow over Marut.

Within seconds the stallion was soaring high, massive wings outstretched as he caught the wind and glided, spiralling high above. Feathers flared as he banked sharply, forelegs tucked up tight to his chest as he swung round, streaking like a bird of prey in a sharp curve.

The forest shot past far below as Ehren let himself enjoy the feel of the cold wind racing over his body, tugging at his errant mane. Looking down he saw Marut, a tiny form below him. Circling so he was behind the open area she stood in he tilted his wings and suddenly zoomed towards the land once again. Wings strained from the speed as the stallion shot like an arrow out of the sky, pulling up at the last minuet to flash past the mare, just overhead. Pulling up he let the updraft carry him high, the wind tugging at his strong feathers as he spiralled high over head. His white underbelly flashing in the sunlight, the faint trace of colour of his clothing just visible.

Marut listened, unable to interject her own thoughts because she'd not experienced anything so different herself. Neither had she worn anything like the stallion did but she could speak of that;
'Do you find it strange wearing things like that? I know the two-leggers wear the soft stuff, but they don't have our pelts.'

Marut watched with held breath, her teeth chewing into her bottom lip. The waft of air from his wing strokes blew her mane about, and it settled across her face, shaking it free she watched him with a fixed gaze as he climbed the sky, her heart thrumming as she imagined what it would be like defy gravity and swoop gracefully through the air..well maybe not entirely gracefully in her case, but she would be fast. She just knew it.

She lost sight of him for a moment, and then there he was, falling to the ground like a hawk that's seen the grass rustle, and he was gone again, leaving her mane in her face once more.

'Thanks!' she called, her laughter following him up into the air as she tried to find him against the sunlight that was in her eyes.

He grinned at the faint voice he caught from Marut as he soared lazily. Being up here, with just the wind streaming past his coat and the song of the skies in his ears, this was truly freedom. Large wings beat lazy strokes as he circled, mane whipped back, for once kept out of his way by his deceptive speed as he soared atop the thermals.

Dipping a wingtip he angled slightly, gliding in a wide, lazy circle as he looked for the best place to land again. Getting airborne was an effort of pure strength, but landing was all about skill. He had taken many a tumble at the end of a flight as a young colt, taking the landing too fast. It took experience to know that your speed in the air was multiplied when you met the solid ground below.

Picking a flat spot just a little way in front of the mare below he banked round then dipped his wings, the air rushed over the leading edge as he dropped, ruffling his feathers and throwing his mane over his back as the green grass rushed up, transforming from a formless emerald carpet into the familiar rolling land he knew.

Massive wings suddenly flared, driving forwards as he decelerated, hooves drumming over the ground as he landed, galloping a couple of strides before he bled off the remaining speed, wings half-folding over his back as he settled back to the earth. Shaking his head he ruffled his wings before folding them neatly against his sides and out the way before turning to look back at Marut.

Marut drummed her own hooves in approval of his flight style, the finesse and the power and freedom he possessed.

'Wonderful, I confess that I am envious of you having wings, I really would love that freedom.' she smiled.
'Besides, I'd be able to have races in the sky, and that would be a great deal of fun as well I would imagine.'

She turned at that, carrying on their course, still looking, listening and scenting for any sign of her mother.

'Have you ever raced anyone in the sky? Or raced someone on the ground?'
That was an idea! She'd never raced like that, hooves against wings. She thought it maybe a little futile, especially given that in the air there were no obstacles like rocks or soft ground, but it would still be interesting to attempt.

A smile touched the stallion's muzzle, his pulse still fast from the impromptu acrobatics, making him forget his usual shyness as he chuckled softly. "Thank you.. though I am by far not the best flier of the family." Tilting his head as he resumed his place at her side when she started forwards again, he watched her a moment. "I would lend you mine if such a thing was possible. I can not imagine what it is like to be earth-bound." His voice was soft and sincere, though her observation about racing made him smile again.

"It is, though I admit it is more fun to fly amid the mountain peaks, or low over the land.. obstacles add an element of skill and ..." he flushed, lifting his head to look up at the skies self consciously. "... well, its also a thrill.. with the danger of crashing." Tilting his head he looked back at Marut from the corner of his eye, a slightly playful if still shy smile touching his expression. "Though our parents weren't too impressed with us."

Dropping his head back to a normal level he pondered her question. "We have raced in the sky, but I’ve never raced overland, or raced a grounded..." Suddenly he blinked and looked at the pretty mare beside him. "You would like to race?" He asked softly.. half afraid she would turn round and kick him for suggesting it, yet feeling that maybe she would wish to..

'Well mostly it's fine, I don't tend to get all moody about something I can't change. Just the occasional twinge of jealousy that two of my brothers and my sister got wings.' Marut chuckled.

'And I get to do all the ground things, the racing, the swimming, sparring. I like to think I enjoy what I am able to do.'

She listened quietly, walking slowly, her tail trailing behind her.
'No, how come?'
It was odd that parents seemed to be all the same, there was always something their children weren't doing right. She wasn't tidy enough, and therefore would apparently never attract a mate.

'I'd love to!' Marut grinned back, pleased he'd taken her hint. She did so enjoy running..
