"Mm. My sisters help at least, so that's good. They were old enough to babysit by the time I got sick." she explained with a nod.

Henri nodded knowingly, and just left it at that. What did you say after that? He couldn't think of anything proper.

Luckily, by this point, Tan Pan had actually gotten an idea of something to talk about. "So, what's it like working at the lighthouse? I've never actually been able to see one up close before."

"It used to be a lot more involved," Henri replied, as if it had been from experience that he knew this, "You had to carry lamp oil up the stairs and the bucket back down. The building had to be maintained, constantly...battered by the sea winds. The light had to be watched all night, you only slept during the day...but now it's electric. I just flip a switch in the morning, and flip it on at night."

Tan Pan laughed much more loudly at that - a real laugh. "Sounds more convenient but a lot more boring." she commented.
SuSu and the boys stared then. They had never heard their mother actually laugh before.

Henri nodded, grinning simply because Tan Pan had laughed.
"It is, it is," he said softly, "but the pay is alright, and I get to spend whole days out having fun, so..." And he shrugged.

"I wouldn't know what to do with a whole day to myself. I barely know what to do on a whole day with the little ones." she grinned at that, glancing back at her kids. The boys were still staring a bit, but Susu'd relaxed once more.

Tan Pan laughed again at that statement. She seemed to be opening up more already - strange, since she'd only just met this man.
"Maybe, we'll have to see about that. I've barely just met you."

"Well of course," Henri said with a little smile, "but then how could we get to know each other at all? Of course, we could perhaps run into one another in town or on the beach, but why leave it to chance? You're very good company."

"More likely than not, if we didn't actively seek each other out, we wouldn't meet again. I don't tend to get out often and spend most of my time working. It'd be a shame to deprive SuSu of a friend though, and she seems to have taken a shine to your Izzy, so we may have at least that to bring us together more often."
By that point, SuSu as well had fallen asleep and the boys had wandered over to curl up by their sister.
