Cocking his head to the side, Epi listened intently, every muscle tense with anticipation, gaze flicking indecisively between the surface of the water, and Feng's face. He wanted to give this 'fishing' a try, but it sounded so difficult...
As the other continued telling his tales of fishing, and actually -catching- the nimble creatures, Epi's eyes widened further, until it looked as if they were half-likely to pop straight out of his head. Finally, clearing his throat, Epi blinked, not quite sure he understood the last bit.
"So wait..they can't breathe when you take them out of the water?" he asked, creeping a few paces closer, until he stood with his fore-hooves just barely in the water.

He hadn't really understood it himself when it had first happened, all he had noticed that the fish seemed desperate to get back into the water again. His mother had later explained it and it had all seemed so very clear. Of course, his mother was the fountain of all knowledge and slowly but surely he was drinking from it - so his method of learning wasn't exactly traditional or one to be embraced by other foals but it worked and to those he encountered he was pleased to be informed that he was like a sage. Some day, he'd be as awesome as his parents were or better, he liked the sound of 'better' a bit more really... Merely because he was competitive.
"I didn't get it either," he confessed after a few moments. "But I saw it flapping about really quickly and then it started to get really slow and it's mouth was doing this..." he paused mid explanation and opened and closed his mouth repeatedly, widening his eyes as best he could to mimic the expression a fish might have. "But my mommy told me that the world is filled with different creatures and some are meant to live in places we can't. Fish live in the water because we can't... but because we can up here they can't come onto our turf - see my meaning?" He finished his explanation and grinned. It was hardly the most eloquent of explanations but it did it's job.
"But as I said, so long as you're really careful about your aim or stand far enough into the water then they all end up okay. Wanna try?"

Epi listened intently, nodding in understanding--the explanation made sense, he supposed. Unable to help himself, he giggled, able to picture the poor fish gasping for air quite clearly in his mind, thanks to Feng's impression.
Nodding emphatically, Epi stepped out a bit further into the water, clearly caught up enough in the moment to not even consider what sort of dangers might linger beneath the water's surface (not that there were likely to be any, but still!).
"Is this far enough?" he asked a moment later, flicking his tail.

The good thing about foals was their vivid imaginations, no matter what their age. The explanations they gave would most likely confuse or amuse an adult but to another of their 'kind' it made perfect sense. Fenghuang's demonstration had been clear enough but his imitation of a fish had been a tad over exagerated. Nevertheless, Epi's acceptance of both spirred him on and he gave a nod of encouragement as the colt stepped into the water. He soon followed, splashing happily through the liquid until he was side by side with the lilac colt - a fair distance away but still.
"You need to be a little further forward," he murmured after inspecting his current location. It hadn't taken him long to recognise that he was still too close to the shore. "Just a bit though," he explained and took another two steps. That done, he inspected his position again and slowly shifted to the right until he was parallel with the shore line. He did this a few times, shifting left and then right until he was comfortable that being parallel to the edge with his right side would work.
"Then you turn round like I am," he added and wiggled his rump. "Then you stand really still...and you wait."
