Steven listened to what the girl said and nodded. She sounded just as scared as he was truthfully. Steven then made up his mind and decided to crawl over to the little group by the light. He got onto his hands and knees and crawled over to them, stopping right in front of them and sitting down, holding his knees close to his chest. He then looked into their faces, the man was the only one who seemed even relatively calm. He then took the yo-yo out of his pocket and started to play with it in the darkness, while still holding his knees. He was doing to to try to stay calm, but it wasn't helping that much. Steven then put the yo-yo away and took out a piece of gum from his pocket. He stuck it in his mouth and then looked around at the small group. "Anyone want a piece of gum? Its Juicy Fruit." he asked sweetly, smiling.

Still leaning against the wall, Vera started to hear strange sounds in the room, the soft rustling of clothes and the sound of feet stumbling aross the room. Still unable to see anything except the darkness, Vera's calm faded away. Fear gripped her heart suddenly and firmly, pumping blood faster and faster throughout her body. Feeling overwhelmed by the fear, Vera tried to keep her head. She decided to find a way to get out of the dark room, and away from the strange sounds. Vera walked sideways cautiously with her back pressed to the wall, like a crab.

Suddenly, a yell of "OOF!" and the sound of something thudding onto the hard floor reached her ears, Vera froze in her track. A small light flickered on in the middle of the room, illuminating the young girl holding it, and those around it. From the weak light, Vera could see the faint outlines of people scattered about in the room with her. Although she could not see their faces, their defensive postures suggested that they were the same as her, frightened and not knowing why they got here. She was not alone.

Suddenly, a scared girl's voice rang out from somewhere further along the wall, asking the question that everyone had in their mind: What is this about? It was directed to a tall man standing in the middle of the room. Feeling her fear relaxed its grip a bit, Vera turned her head towards the man, hoping for a clear explanation to all this.

Michelle blinked a couple of times, letting her eyes get acclimated with the low level of light. Even a lighter's light is better than the impenetrable darkness of before. She scanned the room, noting several moving figures. There were at least a dozen, maybe more. Many different voices started to penetrate the silence. All of them seemed scared, out of place. Except for one.

The voice she was referencing came from near the light, so she could see the source in more detail. His figure was perfectly calm, relaxed. None of this was bothering him. Either he had a mental problem, or he knew something. Someone else noticed it too and asked him what was going on in a very polite manner.

Michelle shook her head. That wasn't enough. She took a few steps forward and, in a commanding voice, demanded, "If you know something, anything, speak up. Some of us have places to go."

((Ah, I sort of forgot to mention this before so I'll do it now before I forget again. The people with roles actually aren't the only ones that will receive special PMs about the RP with prompts, it's just quite unlikely, but people without roles MAY also receive special PMs every once in a while. Sometimes, though I think I did mention this part, I'll be posting public events for everyone to see. Be sure to pay attention to any prompts (public/private) and make sure to read it carefully to see how it would affect your character.))

Quote:
It was quite a stroke of luck that someone had a lighter in hand. Thanks to that, there's now a source of light. Though it seems to illuminate the faces of people quite well, it doesn't seem to effectively penetrate the darkness as well as it should. It looks like you'll have to be quite close to anything inanimate in order to see it.

She wasn’t hurt. But dear god, she was scared out of her mind.
Codi leaped over the thing’s legs, scuttling backwards on the seat of her pants. Fear forced the air out of her lungs in a series of gasping, horrified breaths, body shaking with adrenaline and stored sugar.
But the creature had a lighter. And the creature was certainly human.
Codi calmed down.
”Ohmygod,” she rambled, knees tucked close to her chest as she slowly rocked back and forth, ”I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”
She paused and raised an eyebrow.
”…What are you doing in my room?”
A distant throbbing came from the back of her head; it grew slightly more annoying as the seconds passed, until Muse finally awoke from the far reaches of Codi’s subconscious. She imagined the cartoon figure yawning, the bags under her eyes deep with lack of soda—which would explain her headache.
Headache?
Codi faintly remembered the pounding in her temples moments after she passed out, but only faintly because she figured it was part of a dream she was having, one which included somebody screaming…
”Oh my,” breathed Muse, voice echoing within Codi’s ears, ”Dear, I don’t think this is your room.”
Codi sighed loudly. Why hadn’t that occurred to her before? Plus her room didn’t have hardwood floors? She felt rather stupid and chuckled apologetically.
However, other voices were emerging from the dark. There must’ve been at least a dozen people in this large space. Thankfully, due to the tiny flame hovering alone, Codi’s eyes were able to adjust to where she could see the blurry outlines of figures yet undiscovered.
Suddenly, something familiar. It was a voice, and it was sturdy, husky, and distinctly southern in nature. Codi’s face brightened with hope.
”Clay?” she asked loudly to the man, wherever he may have been standing, ”Is that…that can’t be you! You’re not Clay, are you?”
She felt even more stupid. Of course that wasn’t Clay. Clay was in medical school. He was not locked in a stuffy room with a bunch of random people. But his voice…it carried a lot of confidence, similar to her wayward friend. How could he be so sure of himself in a time like this? It was like he wasn’t worried at all…like he knew what was going on…
Codi shook her head. ”Get a grip,” Muse grumbled in her usual mild-mannered way, ”And get me my coffee.”
That was probably the best idea she’d heard so far. Codi reached into her messenger bag, pulling out an aluminum can and a straw from within. She opened it, the tab clicking loudly as a stream of carbon dioxide burst forth from the pressurized container. Codi took a sniff and instantly recognized the sweet smell of Dr. Pepper. It wasn’t Muse’s coffee, but it would have to do. She dropped in the straw and took a long, refreshing sip. Instantly she woke up and her headache disappeared.
”Good girl,” Muse said, and Codi imagined her grinning wide with energy, ”What would I do without you?”
”Go without caffeine?” Codi muttered jokingly—to the others, she would appear to be talking to herself, ”I mean, god forbid I should ever run out of soda.”

Nathan, who'd been listening for a while before he could manage movement, finally dragged himself into a sitting position against a wall. A girl, too far away to see clearly in the miserably dim light, spoke up as he relaxed against the cool surface, her voice authoritative. "...Some of us have places to go." He smirked at that, and thought about adding a sardonic 'Hear, hear!', but quickly decided that would be stupid on numerous levels. Anyway, a manic little teenager was talking, now.

Instead he reached into the pocket of his jacket, pulled out his own lighter, and brought a flame to life even as he flipped back the top. The flickering light brought the face of the kid next to him into sharp relief. The little guy looked like he was about to either burst into tears or loose it completely, so Nathan shot him a small smile before pulling himself to his feet, using the wall for support. It wasn't so much the headache, although that had been painful as hell when he first woke up, and dizzying to boot, as it was the painful stiffness of his limbs. He stood there, propped up against the wall, waiting for it to subside.

When it did, he was going to go look around himself; to hell with sitting around with strangers, asking questions instead of doing something. Of course, if you believed horror flicks, that was a good way to get yourself killed in a particularly grotesque way, but Nathan didn't believe horror flicks. Anyway, I'm not a jock, and I'm not a slutty blonde chick, he thought, smirking.

Patrick sighed heavily, closing his eyes. "I have no idea. All I know it that we all need to stay calm. Panic isn't exactly the best solution when you wake up and have no damn idea where you are." He opened his eyes to a half-lidded state, his hands in his pockets, and began to rummage about with his right hand in his pocket. "First of all, we're gonna need to see." Though his voice was very calm, an almost tired droll adorned it. With a quiet 'Aha!' he pulled out a cell phone and flipped it open, allowing more light into the room. "I don't have any signal, so it'll just have to do as a light."

Now that there was more light in the room, more of his appearance was visible. He had short, dark brown hair no longer than an inch, and dull hazel eyes that scanned the others with a distinct tiredness. He was tall, very tall, and well-built. An un-shaven stubble covered the rough, pale skin off his face, as well as a thick goatee. His black jacket was un-zipped, revealing a thin white undershirt. When the girl called out toward him with an unfamiliar name, his right eyebrow rose. "I think you have the wrong guy. I'm Patrick."

Steven looked at the guy who smiled at him and felt a little better. When the guy stood up, he did to. He found that he was a lot shorter than the man he was standing next to, but he still looked up into his face. "Hi mister. My name is Steven, whats yours?" he whispered curiously. Steven could already see that this man looked like he wanted to go somewhere, and he wanted to follow.

Steven was trying to egnore the other peoplein the room, who were acting rather hostile towards a man sort of near him. Instead of watching the other people attack the other man, Steven focused all of his attention towards the man standing next to him.

Anna's face fell, and she bit her lip as her wide eyes, oddly colorless in the orangey-yellow glow of the flame, fell to the ground, heavy with extreme disappointment and sudden, fluttering panic. He doesn't know. She was silent for several long seconds, emotion after emotion flitting across her face in quick succession, each one too brief to really read. When she finally looked back up, there was a hardness to her face that hadn't been there before, and though the panic was still definitely there, just below the surface, it looked as though she'd pushed it back until she could deal with it. "Their aren't any windows, so we're probably underground, right? Maybe if we can get above ground level, you'll have a signal."

Nathan tried not to wince at the kid's words, and glanced down at him. Steven was standing up, now, and staring up at Nathan with an almost worshipful expression on his small face. Dammit, Nathan thought furiously at himself, Why did you smile at the kid? You have two nephews his age; you know how this works. Now he's going to be following the stupid, impulsive guy who's wandering around through the dark basement instead of trailing after one of the people who would actually do a good job of looking after him. Nice going. It was too late for regrets, in any case. With another smile, though this one had more of a bitter edge, Nathan whispered back. "Nathan. Nice to meet you Steven."

Patrick nodded, thinking for a few moments. Hm. Now, where would a light be in this place? A confused, and slightly frustrated expression crept upon his face. He turned and glanced toward each of the others with lighters. "Everyone search for a light switch. Since it's dark, if you don't have a light than feel along the walls." He shrugged, forgetting that they probably couldn't see him very well. "Several hands are better than a few." Immediately after the words left his lips, he walked around toward the middle of the room, holding the cell phone close to the ceiling in case there was a light on the ceiling. Atleast being tall comes in handy.

As odd as it was, Connor rarely panicked. Logic overpowered emotion in his mind. Hell, someone could put a gun to his head and he probably wouldn't even blink. What was it that was called? Connor mused confusedly, racking his brain for a word. Ah, yes. Desensitized. He shook his head side to side, paying little mind to the others there unless they spoke. Despite his pondering, he was still moving around the room, scanning each piece of the ceiling that was illuminated for a light.

Ah, her specialty. Codi grinned from ear to ear; if someone shined a light on her face, they would most likely be very creeped out by what they saw. But then again, she had already begun to talk to herself, among other things. Her odd habits had a way of creeping in no matter the situation.
But for now, Codi needed to find a light switch. Taking—what was his name?—Patrick’s advice, she got unsteadily to her feet and reached into one of her deep cargo pockets. She pulled out a rather bulky black cell phone. Triumphant, Codi opened the top, expecting to be blinded by a bright flash; however that wasn’t the case. It was turned off.
”Uh-oh…” Muse chortled, and Codi scowled at her and the phone. Why was she worried? All she had to do was turn it on…
The button pressed, the phone flickered to life—then it immediately died. She furiously depressed the switch several times until it didn’t respond at all.
”My batteries are dead,” Codi growled, deterred, dropping the defective piece of equipment back into the pocket whence it came, ”I’ll just try not to trip over anything.”
”Which will be a miracle,” muttered Muse, in which Codi snapped indignantly, ”Would you shut it? I can’t be useful with you distracting me every five seconds.”
Stupid voice. Codi shook her head, Muse rattling about in her subconscious, and she crept along the floor towards what she hoped was the wall. She tried to follow the other glimmers of light, but her depth perception was extremely inaccurate in this lighting. The room seemed to have no end to it—just a floor and, from the glow of Patrick’s cell phone, a ceiling—but that would soon change.
No matter how carefully she shuffled her feet across the rotting wood, Codi was doomed to collide with something. Almost immediately after she stood she grazed her pinkie toe on something inanimate and either heavy or plastered to the ground. Cursing, she hopped on one foot and managed to finally find the wall. Her hand, held out to support her, also found an object engraved into the stone.
”Hey!” Codi cried, forgetting about her throbbing toe, ”The light switch! I think I found it!”

Steven heard the man's name and smiled widely. "Hey Nathan, want to know whats cool? One of my friends at school is named Nathan too. Well actually he isn't really my friend, but kind of." he shrugged. Steven then heard Patrick say to look for a light switch. He was about to start looking when a girl called that she had found it. The funny thing was she didn't turn it on. He then sighed and looked up at Nathan. He looked aggitated for some reason. "Whats that face for?" he asked curiously.

Nathan, who'd squinted off towards the source of the teenage girl's voice upon hearing that she'd found the lights, looked down at Steven again, his dark eyebrows going up. Perceptive kid. With some effort, he managed to turn the somewhat strained half-smile into a sheepish grin. "I'm freaked out," he replied honestly, "I have absolutely no idea what's going on, and to top it all off, I'm one of the biggest people in the room. If bad guys show up, and they're too tough for me, I'll be one of the first people they take out. If only I had someone smaller to watch my back," he added with a fake sigh.

Quote:
The object Codi found jutting out of the wall is certainly what she thought it was, a light switch. However, it won't work. It doesn't matter who, or how many times the switch if flicked, the area remains completely dark. Obviously, the lights aren't simply turned off, they're broken. That, or the entire power is out. Either way, it appears that everyone will have to continue to search in the dark.

Quote:
Moving around the room, Patrick bumps into something tall and solid. Upon shining a light on the said object, it becomes very obvious what it is. A tall winding staircase with wooden steps and metal railings. It might've been quite beautiful, had it not looked so worn with age. The wooden steps are all but broken and appear to be rotting and the elegant black railings are coated with rust in various places. It almost looks as though the steps would fall apart just by blowing on it. But despite its brittle looks, no parts of it are missing. In fact, nothing will break, no matter how much weight is put on the steps or railings. How strange.

At the very end, there's a wooden trap door. It doesn't appear to be locked.
