Reluctantly, the ranger let the guard take the reins as she noted the location she was at and the stable nearby, looking back toward where Caleb exited when the remaining number took a few steps back and bowed. It felt like a stone sank in her stomach as she saw what was coming her way.
A mage. A void-cursed magic-user and two armed men.
She took a step backwards as she heard the orders before remembering the other guards were behind her. Already there wasn't even a glimmer of a chance for a civil meeting like she had been hoping for.
"This whole thing reeks, but it's not me," she said aloud toward the mage, her hands moving over her blades hesitantly, knowing once those were drawn, there were no holds barred from the others doing the same behind her. "I've got nothing of importance for you," she growled, judging her options which were growing fewer with each guard's step closer.

Rakura Lynn -He looked at the spur one last time.- "That's an interesting fact I did not know." "And Neither did it answer my questions."
-Then he looked at the dagger as this distaste for certain types of dragons was stirring again.-
"Fine, I guess you have another slave."
-He then cut his palm like the dragon instructed earlier after all he is fortunate to be still living. Then he dropped the dagger and applied much pressure against the cut as his hand pulsed and stung from the sweat and dirt.- Tarketh laughed and unfolded, rising from the ground like the blossoming of a flower. He reached down, his clawed hand seizing the man's arm, wrenching it up so that the blood from the palm slid down over his talons. He said something low and gutteral in his own language, almost sounding bored as he did so. He had Bound many many humans in his lifetime. This one would be no different. His will flowed down through the blood, the dragon-magic almost a poison of its own. The dragon's chanting became faster, more liquid, and a sense of pressure grew in the human's mind. Tarketh's will infected him, spreading throughout the blood, raking nerves against sheer power, flaying open the mind and laying every thought and emotion bare. Tarketh skimmed through them, his family, the people he saw die, his hopes, and for a moment the pressure relented, a sense of indifference sweeping between the two. Tarketh didn't care about his past. It was just something to rifle through, to define who was the master. Then Tarketh let go. The aftereffects remained, a shuddering sort of ache, and a growing pain on the shoulderblades. Muscles protested as heat built up. "It will take a couple hours for your wings to grow," Tarketh said, "They will be shaped by magic and despite what you feel, you will not die. Use them to get out of the pit and I'll consider you my Bound." All contact with Tarketh's mind was gone. Its influence remained there as a subtle reminder but Tarketh's own thoughts and emotions were securely locked away. The dragon turned and walked away, taking the light with him as he did, leaving his new Bound to grow his wings alone. ((I have no more plans for the two. If you wish, feel free to make a last post and from here out you now control Tarketh's Bound. Congrats? Let me know if you need Tarketh himself to show up in a roleplay.))

Jayara Reluctantly, the ranger let the guard take the reins as she noted the location she was at and the stable nearby, looking back toward where Caleb exited when the remaining number took a few steps back and bowed. It felt like a stone sank in her stomach as she saw what was coming her way. A mage. A void-cursed magic-user and two armed men. "I've got nothing of importance for you," she growled, judging her options which were growing fewer with each guard's step closer. "How little you know," the mage said softly, still not taking his eyes off the ranger. "You'll see soon enough." At the slight movement towards her weapons both the guards unsheathed their swords. One swept the tip so that it rested mere inches from her collarbones, a not so subtle hint to behave. The other guard walked behind her and without warning slammed the pommel into the back of the ranger's skull. "I won't be kept waiting," the mage said, "Disarm her and bring her along." ---------------- The mage's lab was a stark room save for a runic circle carved directly into the stone floor. The room itself was a circle with no windows and only one entrance and exit. Torches lined the walls and cast an uncertain light. There were chains affixed to the ground in the middle of the circle and these were bound to Jay's wrists, giving her only enough slack to kneel, not to stand. There was a line of tables along one edge of the room, holding various jars and containers. The mage stood at the edge of the circle. He lifted his head slightly, as if sensing the ranger regaining consciousness. ((You can have her back now.))

There was a painful crack, followed by a bright flash of white light...
The chilled stone beneath her cheek was the first thing she noticed afterward. A shiver ran through her body and she realized that there was less of a weight about her. Her cloak and armor were gone, leaving her just the basics: the shirt on her back, pants, and boots. Or at least she thought she still was wearing her boots. Maybe her feet were too cold to tell.
Then the throbbing kicked in. Jay groaned as she lifted a hand to press at the back of her head until her wrist was jerked to a stop. Slowly her eyes fluttered open, her fuzzy vision directed toward her hand hovering in the air in front of her prone form.
She grumbled some as her vision cleared and she could see the chains that cuffed her... as well as the mage standing not far off. Quietly she pressed her hands to the floor and tried to push herself up, discovering the chain's short length as she tried to wobbly straighten up. The disarmed ranger jerked on the chains in a short burst of fury before quickly residing to the fact that breaking them by pure strength alone was just not in her repertoire of skills.
Silently she sat down on the floor, crossing her legs, staring maliciously back at the mage who was in the room with her.

Silently she sat down on the floor, crossing her legs, staring maliciously back at the mage who was in the room with her. The mage glanced at her, once, and then returned to the book he was reading. He gave no indication of caring that the ranger was awake, instead just flipped the pages and after a few minutes nodded to himself and shut the book. He was lean with sharp features and apparently was not too familiar with the sun. He stopped just at the edge of the circle, staring in at Jay. "I'll need your full name," he said languidly, "It's important for these things. Fate hangs heavy around you, as I suspected it would. Baroness Yvette might not be able to take the prophetess, but someone that has been near Avalene can make do." His eyes narrowed. "And you have certainly been near her. I doubt you would understand the nuances of power and the channeling of, but to put it crudely - fate has touched you directly. Rather strongly, in fact... much stronger than I would have expected from just the prophetess. So much the better. All I need from you now is a little cooperation and your full name."

The woman seated on the floor said nothing in reference to her name, the mention of Avalene, nor toward any sort of meeting.
That however didn't mean that any of it wasn't on her mind. Avalene had made it sound as if she had been caught once before and somehow had gotten away. It was just too bad that she had not gotten to explain how she pulled off the latter.
Had this been how they treated the girl? Jay let herself wonder only a moment before she forced herself not to think of it. It was probably best to avoid thinking of that past event all together right now. If that other mage could read her past, who knows what else could be done by the whole lot of them now.
"Don't give me that 'Fate' dirt. Only fools afraid of their own choices use it as their crutch and god." The ranger leaned forward while still sitting. "So take your Fate and your book and go hang yourself."

Caleb was ready to execute you as soon as you woke up once he searched your things and found the tabard of one of those dragon-knights in your saddlebag. It was only because I needed you that stayed his hand." He smiled thinly, crossing the circle and walking over to stand just out of Jay's reach. "I can always inform him that I don't necessarily need you -intact- if you cause trouble. And as for fate... that is merely what the ignorant call it. With you being a woman I don't expect much comprehension. Just accept that your contact with the prophetess will let me see the possibilities the future might bring. Now hold out your hand - blood is a component of the scrying."

She swore to herself as she had completely forgotten she had that blood-stained orange scrap. With her luck, the damned thing probably had Hammand's name stitched in as well somewhere. She'd have to conjure some excuse for having that on her, but she wasn't going to give anything for now if she wasn't pressed.
Jay jumped to her toes until the chains clanked and held her back.
"Just as your kind are cowards behind your words. Remove the chains and we'll see who comprehends what," she said as she put more weight on her feet and lowered herself into a crouch so the chains weren't as tight, her hands held protectively at her sides.

"Very well then," the mage murmured, "We'll do this the hard way. Tell me when you're ready to cooperate." And he gestured, whispering to the air. Runes danced about his upraised hand for a moment, the brief ritual binding power to his will. It converged on the ranger, air made solid, and heavy, wrapping around her limbs, her chest like iron chains. He closed his fist and they began to tighten until it seemed her ribs would give way. Somewhere, the faint notes of a song drifted past.

"I'd let Yvette's right hand have me far before I'd listen to you, mage," the captive taunted during his whispers until she felt her shoulders being pressed inward. Her eyes scoured the area around her as the tension grew. By the time she saw the mage's hand, she was already on her knees sucking in air, the pain from her chest overriding nearly any other thoughts in her head.
Then there was a loud crack and Jay cried out as her left arm gave way, the bone snapping in half.
The ranger's head hung downward, pained, as she could feel as well as hear the effects of the pressure on the rest of her bones. It was making a music of their own with a song that was playing in her head, one that she didn't recognize but felt she should and struggled with her memories as to why that was.
Did she want to remember though? the rest of her asked as her body gradually began to quit struggling against the pressure, simply giving in. She'd be dead soon anyway if the mage kept up the way he was going. Lotta good that would do him, something else inside her laughed despite the circumstances.

She'd be dead soon anyway if the mage kept up the way he was going. Lotta good that would do him, something else inside her laughed despite the circumstances. As the ranger collapsed the mage stepped forwards, stooping to run the knife blade along the inside of Jay's broken arm. The pressure stabilized but did not grow any worse. For his part, the mage did not seem to notice - or care - about the pain he had inflicted. Instead, he took the bloodied knife and returned to the edge of the circle, scratching it across the runes until the blood dripped off. Pale light broke loose, racing through the circle until it was fully illuminated. The tension in the air around Jay broke. The song remained distant, just a few notes escaping here and there. The mage did not seem to notice it at all, merely concentrating on his spell. The pupils of his eyes had faded and it appeared they weren't there at all. And all around the ranger power ebbed and flowed, reaching up to taste the remains of the Blessed magic that clung to the ranger from that brief contact with Sain. 'He won't take any care with your life,' the voice whispered and the song faltered, 'He'll rip what he wants to know free... shall I sing to you and ease your passing?' 'Or do you want to see him dead, drowning in his own blood?'

'I... I...' the ranger's mental voice stuttered, lifting her head to watch the mage after he drew blood. She had felt the blade cross skin but it was more of a sting compared to the throbbing that was beneath the top layer.
Jay's face went from one of pain to one crossed with revolt as she watched the mage's eyes lose their color only to become something akin to what she had seen happen with Sain.
'Can't let him... no, no, no...'
What if he learned something of Avalene? Or the Dragon Knights? She didn't like dragons, but if something were to happen to them through this...
"Stop! Stop it!" she shouted at the mage.
'Dead!' she yelled in her head as she made a new effort to struggle against the chains, biting her cheek against the pain shooting from her arm. 'Damned mages!'

'I thought you weren't the type to give up. A few minutes more, beloved, and it'll all be over. And I will give you what you want.' 'Not even Sain can stop me.' The mages chanting reached a halt and the energy he had been channeling imploded into the ranger, ripping through her mind and body alike, wrapping the remnants of Sain's power up and pulling it away to form a nebulous cloud around the mage. He idly gestured, directing it with a glazed look in his eyes, navigating the path of the future with stolen power. As for the source of it... all that remained was a broken body, bones shattered and blood vessels burst from the spell, the raw power destroying almost everything it touched. Mortals were blind to the swan. He appeared out of nothing, a massive black beast with wings that were almost draconic stretching out of his feathered bones. His chest was caved in where the heart would be, a small cavity that deformed his otherwise elegant form. He stood over the ranger's body for a moment, regarding it quietly, and then lifted his head and sang. Birth, death... what was living anyway? The swan song, said to be the most beautiful song ever sung, only voiced at the swan's death. And now the Black Swan sung for the ranger. It spoke of the natural way of things, that oh so brief lifespan that glittered so brightly before vanishing. And how to defy this order. Claim life. Demand to live. 'Stand,' the Swan ordered, 'Your heart will no longer beat. Give it to me so that I might sustain it, and the seal will be made and all the power you could want will be yours.'

The ranger was about to respond to the voice that had been in her head when suddenly everything swirled around her. Pictures, sound, feeling, smell, all turned about, became wrong and right at the same time all before it went blood red. She opened her mouth to scream but it was cut off as the spell went off...
...and then there was nothing but the song.
It was a song she had never heard before in her stops at taverns and camps. A song that washed away all songs that she had ever heard. There was a sense of peace that came with melody. She felt a tug on her soul to move along, but the song was entrancing; it had enraptured her. As the song trailed toward the end, it was not the peaceful melody that now held her still, but the trumpet calls to continue on.
Then she heard the words from the Swan itself.
Voiceless, the air filled with fiery agreement that rushed about where the Swan stood beside the broken body of the ranger on the floor.
