They didnt have mythology classes when i was in high school argh the education board district 50 of south carolina argh you. yeah and that is a good link i have visited it to help with spelling on several occasions. square should just bring out a big book out that has all the information in it for us. as dumb as that sounds there are enough nerds out there to buy it and i might be included among them not sure. I have always found it wierd that they use more european and african based mythology in there games than japanese mythology even though there is alot of that too.

I never really knew any of this stuff. My head's for games and fighting not facts like these. Even after reading every post in this thread in one sitting, I can't recall a damn thing about it. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to check back every once in a while and put in my 2 cents about the newer things that have been added in here.

though.. there is one that I knew (since I've studied much about kendo and ken jutsu and the teachings of Musashi Miyamoto) that you made a mistake on.

Masamune... was never thought to be the greatest sword ever. but rather, is the name of one of the greatest lines of blacksmiths in Japan. The first of them being known as Goro Nyudo, living in the early 1300s. You may have confused the fact that it's a sword rather than a smith due to a katana called the "Honjo Masamune" this is simply the katana carried by the Tokugawa shogunate in the late 1400s, which was made by the 7th decendant of Goro, making him part of the Masamune line.

In early japan it was common to call swords by who made them, this often leads to people not realizing that they are speaking of a swordsmith rather than a sword.

Yay, this thread is back!

Hm, well, looking back, I have a correction on the Midgar thing.
It is from the name of the human world in Norse mythology, but that was originally called Midgard. It really makes sense if you think about it, the symbolism...

Hero Of Three Kingdoms
All Final Fantasies have several connections to mythologies. These connections inlcude summons, weapons, items, quest, and so forth. Some of the bigger connections are easily noticed while the smaller ones go on seen. I honestly can not say I know them all or half of them at best but I plan on listing them as I can remember then and would like some help from some of the elites of Final Fantasy fandom. Also if you have a question i would be glad to research it and find the answer. So not to offend anybody i will label all beings of mystical supernatural and or godly status as mythology.

Ragnarok- The Final Battle of Norse Mythology where the worlds end and are reborn through the few surviving gods and mortals. Odin meets his end on this day. Is a summon, sword, and a ship.

Odin- The leader of the Aesir who gave up his eye , life and talked to a head with out a body to recieve infinite knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Is a summon.

Shiva, Azura- Are all Hindu gods/goddesses if I am not mistaken. All summons.

Titan- Greek mythology titans came before the gods. They were defeated by the gods and most were tortured in some way. A summon.

Masamune- Japanese mythology and historically known as best Katana ever. Sword

Murasame-Japanese mythology and historically known was series of weapons made by the blacksmith Murasame these weapons when possessed by a member of a certain family would meet a tragic end they where banned from being owned in Japan i believe only 5 exist today. Sword

Excalibur- sword from English mythology owned by King Arthur however commonly mistaken as the sword pulled from the stone. That sword was in fact his fathers sword not excalibur which comes from the lady of the lake. a sword

Phoenix -mythological bird that rises from its own ashes. summon also feathers are items

Leviathan- mythological and biblical creature also means large ship. Summon

Ifrit -Djinn cast wishes but will make them true through the worst ways possible they are tricksters. Ifrit is not another word for djinn but it is a type of djinn the others are daos, marid, and i cant remember the forth at this time.also another mythological Ifrit is a large winged being can take form of man or animal and cant be harmed by physical means only magical. Summon

Quezacotl- Aztec god of wind

Sirens- Greek mythology woman mixed with birds whose voices bring young men to their doom plays a role in Homer's The Odyssey. summon

Golem- jewish mythology a humanoid made of mud brought to life. summon

Gilgamesh- legendary hero in Mesopotamian culture. summon

Hades- name of both god and the underworld from greek mythology. enemy

Cait Sith- fairy cat spirit that brings good luck. character

Siegfried- found in Wagner's opera is from a german tale he kills the dragon fafnir. His death is the result of a betrayal for greed and he is pierced by a spear from one he called friend.

Cloud Strife- while not mythological his last name ironically means the lack of agreement or harmony in which both externally and internally cloud lacked.

Grimoire: (vincents father) is the name of a book written in the middle ages about magic contents include angels and demons.

Nero: One of the insane emperors of Rome. boss in dirge of cerberus

cerberus- the three headed dog that guards the gates to hades

Sleipnir the eight legged horse of odin. He was born from Loki after Loki had transformed into a mare to prevent the completion of a wall to protect the Aesir. enemy in the up coming final fantasy 12
Also midgar is a ploy off of Midgard, which is one of the 9 norse worlds.. and the Midgar Zolom is modeled after Jormundgand, Loki's serpent child

huh... alot of stuff I already knew... but good info nontheless. I thought you were going to talk about some REALLY in depth stuff... like, if I remember correctly, Sephiroth's name's meaning, or it's connection to Tifa's last name... and stuff like that. (i thought it was interesting o.O)

sry for 2x posting but my Gothic black magic freak friend told me that sephiroth comes from the sephirothic circle in black magic. It's used to get power to yourself instead of using a summon circle. My friend said there are two types one for summoning demons and another to gain magical powers.
