"Richard, this is not just a ballroom, but a gathering place for the scum of the world!" Damian tried to keep his voice low so Lorey wouldn't hear from outside the door. "People who are involved in the police force like to try and gather attention to themselves, but in your case, I intervened. Be thankful, or your situation could be worse with more people knowing, or even the wrong people knowing." Even Damian himself wasn't sure of all the details, but knew enough that Richard's wife had died in the crossfire and his life was nearly ruined. "Now, though, I only have Lorey's interests at heart. She is just as subject to their treachery as you once were."

Richard's eyes narrowed. He didn't like the fact some pansy rich boy was getting into his business. That was a definate no-no in the 'keep you face from being rearranged' department. But after a moment, Richard's anger subsided and he smiled. his smile was followed by a light chuckle into a full out laugh. He hugged his ribs as he gasped for breath, wiping his eyes as he finally got a hold of himself. "You simpleton..." He sighed, still smiling as he smoothed his hair back. "You think my problem was a mere scuttle that could be patched up with some hush money?! You ave NO CLUE how big it is..." He took a deep breath as he kicked the cigarette on the floor. "This goes past the police force...this is right up there with the big dogs. There's things out there that certain people don't want you o know, and would probably kill you for knowing that they even existed...Do you have enough money to hide a scandal that affects this entire galaxy, possibly the universe?" He asked, threateningly as he took a few more steps towards him, until he was inches from Damian's face.

A rich boy he might have been, but Damian had pluck when the time came. "Hence why I wanted them quiet. I thought it might have been a bit more... involved." Damian came just a bit closer for his next point. "If you are at the heart of something so large, then why are you bringing Lorelee with you? Hasn't she been through enough?" His cold eyes went right into his with an unmistakable challenge.

That struck a deep chord within Richard. This is partially been the reason he had felt so conflicted this morning. But what right did Damian have to bring it up? Even if it were true. Richard stared down at the ground, his temper boiling. he had so many things he wanted to say and do to this punk, but all of them would get them no where, and most likely just give Damian more material in which to use against Richard. After a moment Richard furrowed his brow and turned away slightly. "You're right. I knew going into this that Lorey would be put in danger and I couldn't live with that. But I would put my life on the line for her, and I was not going to let her stay under the 'care' of some stuck up, abusive jerk who threw her onto the streets where she cried out for someone...someone to take care of her..." His anger simmered down a tad as he looked lovingly towards the door. But he closed his eyes tightly again, returning to his fury with Damian. "So what should I do?! Just get up go, break her heart, and vamoose?!" he demanded, poking Damian roughly on the chest.

The smirk that crawled across his lips seemed poisonous. "You're a man of true character, Richard. Would you approve of my methods for casting her away if you knew that once I loved her?" The shocking statement hung in the air. "I know what I did was wrong. But if it kept her away from this place and from another dust rag, the ends justified the means."

Richard looked him dead in the eye for a moment longer before redirecting his eyes, thinking. As much as he hated to admit it, Damian made sense. Richard was silent for a long time before reaching for another cigarette, though he didn't light it. He merely fumbled with the little stick, thinking intently. "I Can't just let her go..." He said finally, taking a seat in one of the chairs near the large desk. Richard couldn't decide if he couldn't let Lorey go because it'd break her heart, or his....which only seemed to justify Damian's solution.

"Fortunately for you, she's more partial to your decision," he said dryly. "I am not here to sway your decision, but... you've already within one day had an overwhelming positive effect upon her, more than any effect I had over her in the year I knew her." The meeting was more for a judgement of his character, which Damian was already beginning to hate because it only fulfilled his shortcomings. "If there is suffering, at least she'll be happy with you." The ends justify the means.

Richard put the cigarette in his pocket and looked up, surprised at Damian. Was he actually giving Richard his consent? Not that he needed it, but his sudden turn on the conversation made Richard see him in a different light. "You know....You're all right..." Richard sighed, standing again, holding his hand out to shake. Anyone who care for Lorey's best interest was alright with Richard, even if their attempts to make her happy looked negative.

Damian looked at his hand for a moment before grudgingly taking it. "While you think with your fists, I suppose you are suitable as well." With a more tame smirk, he let his hand drop and returned to his desk. "Now get out of my office before I summon security and have them arrest the man who assaulted me not twenty-four hours ago."
Meanwhile, Lorelee was pacing a ways down the hall. She had heard the muffled yelling, but resolved not to go anywhere near the door. Then, a silhouette against the large stained glass window that adorned the very furthest wall, she seemed like a princess waiting for her prince to come and save her.

Richard shook his head with a slight chuckle and reached for the door. He lifted a hand as if to say goodbye before spotting Lorey. He said nothing but shrugged and smiled, reassuring her that everything was fine. He causally stuffed his hands into his pockets and approached her.

"I heard yelling..." she began, though he looked so calm. "What happened? Is everything alright?"

Richard just shrugged again. "Just guy stuff..." He joked. "I didn't rough him up too bad...He should wake up in an hour or two." He smiled coyly as he leaned against the window behind her, slipping his arms around her waist.

She gladly leaned into him for a bit of calm, but his remark made her start. "Are you... oh, you better be joking." There was a glint in her eye as she tried to figure out for herself if Richard was lying.

Richard's answer came in the form of a soft kiss on the lips before leaning back against the window again. He wasn't about to give Damian any props forget him in good with Lorey again. if he wanted her respect, he'd have to get it himself.

"I'll take that as a maybe." It amazed her how a little kiss like that could send a swarm of butterflies through her stomach. Lorey leaned her head on his chest, almost wanting to crawl into his lap. They weren't in a casua setting, though. "I still can't believe his reasoning behind it all..." she whispered.
