Jack slowly led the small, rather strange group closer to civilization. growing rather quiet as they approached the town, his eyes sharp under the shadow of his hat. Light was fading quickly in the sky, but as the light faded, the wind carried sounds of rowdy merrymaking and activity within the dusty town. The cowboy sighed and rubbed at his chin, shifting in his saddle. He was rapidly trying to think of the best way for this to go.

His newfound Indian friend, however, seemed to have an idea of how all this would work already. Chetan sidled up next to Jack and started asking questions. Slowing down a bit so he could answer, Jack glanced over to him and nodded. "River's Edge's the name. Though, the river they built the town on isn't much more than a creek," He gestured towards the shine of the setting sun on a mediocre river that curved around the outer edge of the place. "Used ta be gold here, I think. S'why the town popped up. A lot of 'em have been doin' that lately."

Allowing his horse to move forward once again, he gave a shrug. "A couple hundred people, I'd wager. And yeah, I robbed 'em." He offered up a smile that he couldn't quite help. Despite how much he'd rather not set foot in that town again, he was somewhat eager to see if there'd been any buzz about him. The last couple of towns he'd gone through had some sketches up by the Sheriff's office, even before he'd done anything. Slowly the man seemed to be making a name for himself - albeit a bad one.

Shaking his head at Chetan's bravery (or perhaps ignorance), he followed him into River's Edge, greeting those with a tip of his hat that gave a nod first, and quickly caught up to Chetan, who was already gathering stares. "Yer a brave one, ya know that?" Jack asked, trotting up to the young man's side. "We'd best take care of things, 'n get a couple 'o beds fer the night. There's an Inn jus' over that way." He waved a gloved hand towards what looked to be a quaint little bed and breakfast.

So far, so good. Getting into any fights right now would probably end up with someone killed - namely himself, or Chetan. It wasn't every day someone led an Indian into a town... Even more rare that the one doing it was someone whose last stop in town was to rob a couple of carriages blind.

((I HAS THINGS TO POST TOO, WTFFFF.... I was beginning to think my rps were all apart of my iiiimaaaaaginatioooon.))

"Brave?" Chetan asked when Jack had caught up with him. "Of course. I'm of the People." He flashed him a joking smile. "I have no choice but to be brave."

The stares and looks that Chetan got were either ignored, or completely unnoticed. The Indian merely sat up in his saddle relaxed as he could be. George may have been the wiser of two, and seemed alert. His ears were moving back and forth and his eyes were large and watching.

"A couple of beds?" He asked suddenly. "Does this mean we are companions now?" He smiled the smile of a boy, his black eyes shining.

As they continued on through the town it was to be expected that they would eventually be stopped and stopped they eventually were. A larger man a few had chosen from their ranks stepped into Chetan's path with a fierce look in his mouth and eyes and a gun to match his vicious intentions. George halted and blew his hot breath hard through his nostrils and into his face. The man wheeled back and glared. He thew an accusing finger at the red man on his horse.

"We don't want none of YER kind here." He through a filthy look at Jack. "Especially yer kind that drags along THAT kind at his heels." The filthy man stopped and spat. "Or maybe I should say this in a language you can UNDERSTAND, red man." His face twisted with gnarled smirk. He proceeded to leap around and yell wildly and then gestured crudely and rather offensively to get his a** out of his town.

Chetan looked at him peaceably. "There wasn't enough," He held a note and clapped his hand on and off of his mouth, "In your war cry, white man. Maybe that is why you always lose." Chetan smiled a white toothed smile.

The white man reddened and his eyes popped. "We don't want you here!" He shouted and leveled his gun. "DON'T THINK I'LL ASK AGAIN!"

Chetan stared right down the barrel. George shifted beneath him. The young man furrowed his eyebrows and with a half shrug guided George with his knees around the fuming man. "There is no fight here." Is what he said.

The man gave a wild shout and cocked his gun, his body shaking with rage, but there was no shot.

"Get AHOLD of yerself you great ugly b*****d!" A woman shouted. "Have you no MANNERS?" She beat him over the head with a tankard she had been carting underneath her arm. "If he's not here to scalp us then let him BE. The red man is a rare thing and it's dying with this GOD FORSAKEN DESERT. You leave that BOY ALONE." And she proceeded to hit him a few more times. "You great STINKIN' DRUNKARD. HE'S JUST A BOY! I don't GIVE a damn if he's red! Or BLUE or GREEN, or you're ugly shade of hate, you great-" And then she started shouting off strings of profanities no woman should ever utter.

Finally feeling that the situation was under control and the man who had confronted Chetan was thoroughly humiliated, the woman bustled over to the two men. She flashed them a slightly crooked smile and fiddled with her skirts. She was older, mid twenties, and it showed a little in her face. She was stocky, a sturdier woman than most. Her sleeves were rolled up to show off brawny arms and she was thick from head to toe. She had an expansive bust size to match and an abundance of brown hair. Her eyes were grey.

"So." She said roughly. "I hear you boys will be needin' a room." She winked at Chetan. "He'll be back, but I got that old p***y cat in his place for now."

Chetan smiled hugely and slid from his mount to hug this woman around her shoulders. "YOU'RE A FINE WOMAN!" He exclaimed, his eyes over bright.

The woman laughed, surprised, and patted Chetan on his bare back. "I don't hear that often enough." She looked to Jack. "He's a right affectionate fella, ain't he?"

((OKAY. I TRY AND POST NOW. ahahaha I dunno how good it is 'cos I got TIRED. GUH.))

"Companions ain't the word I'd immediately choose, Chetan, but I wouldn't mind ya hangin' 'round for a bit. You're an interestin' fella." Jack nodded, but a much more serious look crossed his face when they were (inevitably) approached by someone who didn't care too much for the pair being in the city.

Resting a hand on one of the guns at his side, Jack raised an eyebrow and grinned widely at the man, "My kind? I'm not the one causin' trouble right now, am I?" His eyes flickered dangerously upon hearing him insult Chetan. They'd only known each other for a few hours, but like the Indian boy, he too felt some sort of reason to have him 'at his heels' as it were. He trusted the kid. For whatever reason, he did.

However, it seemed Chetan wouldn't be prodded into doing something stupid-- Well... Saying things like that might get him in trouble, but trouble was staved off by a rather unexpected method. Jack had drawn his own gun the moment their aggressor had, but found he wouldn't have to shoot (good thing too, he wasn't too sure if any of his bullets would fire properly).

Out of nowhere, a very strong, very IRRITATED voice sounded, and Jack looked over his shoulder to see where that voice belonged. Who he saw brought a highly amused smile to his face. That sort of woman you didn't mess with. Those women of the frontier - the ones who helped pave the way for expansion westward... They were no one to be trifled with. Jack had met a few of these incredible women in his time, and knew good and well that they were no one to be trifled with. Gender aside, it was easy to tell this woman could rip you in half if she wanted... And even more, there was that motherly instinct that kicked in.

Giving a low whistle as the once-manly man was driven down to being a whining, sniveling coward, Jack urged his horse forward towards the woman, holstering his gun. "Thanks fer that, Ma'am," he tipped his hat, "And that's right. A room would be somethin' we could use." He slid off his own horse as Chetan tried to hug the woman, and had to laugh again. He could barely get his arms around her.

"I haven't known him too long, but I'd figure that'd be a good assumption ta make. Th'name's Jack," he nodded in formal greeting, then offered a hand. "And this 'Lil Indian here is Chetan. We didn't expect to find ourselves in th'town tonight, but, things happen." He shrugged. "Usually I'm outta here before the trouble I cause catches up ta me." The man offered a grin. "So, before anyone else gets any bright ideas, shall we go?"

((OKAY. READY. GO.))

The woman smiled and Chetan released her from his dark arms. "Nice to meet ya, Jack. Chetan." She gripped the cowboy's hand firmly and shook ((SHAKED)) it. She nodded her head at Chetan. "I'd shake yer hand, but I'd say me n' you were past that already." And she laughed.

Chetan flashed her a grin.

"My names Rebecca Marie. You can call me Rebecca.... or ya know, Marie. Whatever gets your beans baked, alright? I ain't picky." She laughed a little and turned on a heel. "Let's get you boys into someplace warm. You hungry? I have some food made up."

And as simple as that the woman led them back to her home. Any looks she may have gotten she didn't seem to notice and any remarks she just shot off one twice as mean.

"Here we are!" She said of a little cabin set off from the others. The windows glowed golden and warm in the gathering dark of the desert. A smell of warm dinner wafted from the open door. "There's a stable if you two wanna put up your mounts."

Chetan shook his head. "George doesn't like being put up." He patted his horse affectionately.

"George?" Rebecca laughed and shook her head. "Alright." She said.

Chetan grinned and as he usually did, spoke to him in his own language. The horse tossed it's great head and galloped off.

Rebecca looked to Jack. "Your horse going to run off too?" And she shook her head. "What kind of men am I letting into my house?" And with that, she led them inside.

As soon as they were there they were greeted rather noisily by several voices... several small voices... with dark hair, skin, and wild eyes. No less than six children gathered in around the newcomers shouting in so many voices no one knew quite what was being said at all. Rebecca fixed that quickly.

"Ya'll shut yer mouths before I get cross with you!" She shouted in a commanding voice, but somehow she still seemed kind about it. She was grinning.

The children quickly obeyed and backed off a little, only a few lingering.

Chetan looked at them and slowly a grin grew broader and broader. "They are yours?"

Rebecca nodded her head wearily. "Yep. Every single one."

"Half and half." He said happily and then something in is native tongue. He translated: "They're beautiful." He looked to Jack grinning. "There are little red and white men."

A little girl scowled.

"And women." He corrected.

"Well, don't just stand in the door!" Rebecca said gently shoving them to the table. "Sit! Eat! Tell me what brings a couple of fellas like you up this way."

((SHAKED!!!!!))

"Couldn't say no to a good meal, now could we?" Jack said lightly, wrapping the reigns around his hand and leading his horse after the woman, Chetan not far behind.

Jack wasn't surprised that her home was a short walk outside of the main town. It was obvious the woman was quite capable of causing a stir among the inhabitants, and the cowboy found that quite amusing. If nothing else, he'd never try and rob any of her kin.

Upon arriving, the horses were quickly taken care of, and both Jack and Chetan eagerly entered her home, enticed by the delicious smell of warm food and a place to stay. Jack was still a bit damp from the storm, and the thought of a fire was far from unwanted.

What he hadn't expected though, was to be practically bombarded by an unexpected group of children. It was easy to tell they weren't what a normal man would call 'white folk,' but no one in the room there seemed to care. Chetan was obviously enthralled by such people, and Jack couldn't help but smile too. Today had been a STRANGE day. Removing his hat and giving it a good bop to his knee, he looked over his shoulder at Rebecca and raised his eyebrows. "Yer some woman, aren'tcha?"

Letting himself be ushered to the table, he sat down in a chair next to the little girl that had so deeply scowled at Chetan and pulled himself up to the table, lightly hanging his hat on the back of the chair. "Well, Ma'am, I was just passin' through, ta be perfectly honest. Ran into a little bit of a storm, and then this crazy kid, and ended up back 'ere. I oughta scoot come mornin' though. I have a knack for causin' trouble." He shot a glance towards Chetan. He vaguely wondered if the Indian would opt to follow. There were a few more towns in the near area, and he was pretty sure that'd mean some profit for his own endeavors.

((POSTIESSSS... Cos I was lame the passed two days... srsly. Wtf was up with that?))

Rebecca flashed Jack a smile as old and harsh as the landscape. "That's what I've been told... but maybe not in those kind of words." And she laughed carelessly. "I've been called lots of names for a woman." And she bustled around in the kitchen, hefting a child off her counter and scolding him gently. "But if it's a night's all you'll be needing the it's a night you'll have... Chetan will be going with you I expect."

When Jack sat down next to the sole daughter in the family she looked up at him with hard grey eyes. She tugged her lips into a slight frown. "My name's Ellie." She said. "I wanna be a cowboy." And she looked Jack up and down with a child's calculating gaze. "Are you gonna laugh?" She demanded. "Cos I'll kick your AS-"

"Ellie." Came Rebecca's warning tone.

Ellie sucked in her lips and narrowed her eyes.

Chetan glanced at Ellie once and laughed, but found himself mostly distracted by the other boys. They were excited to see someone as dark as their father had been. They were wrestling him a little and Chetan humored their little dog pile routine. He growled and howled like an animal, bucking and kicking gently to remove their little hands. They laughed gleefully and mimicked his howls.

The oldest watched, detached and wise, eyes warily on Jack. He helped his mother in the kitchen.

Rebecca, with her eldest son carrying another plate with her, came to the table and placed the two dinners heaping and full on the low wooden table. "Hey now, you little indians! Leave that boy alone and let him eat! He looks half about starved, anyway! What you been living on?"

"Nothing but tall grass and river water!" He shouted back playfully and emerged from a pile of little limbs. He quickly took a seat at the table. "Who was he?" Chetan wanted to know. "The father."

Rebecca took a seat with Ellie. She hefted her daughter from her seat, sat, and then placed her lightly in her lap. Her eldest took a seat close to Jack, eyes wary and sharp.

Rebecca smiled softly for a woman with such a harsh face. She said a beautiful word.

Chetan grinned. "I hope he was as strong as his name."

"Stronger." She said and then exhaled softly. "But enough of that. Eat."

And he ate.

((YOU WERE SO LAME. >:B

Hahaha and I SO can't focus right now...))

"I'd hope he would," Jack said, looking over at Chetan play-wrestled with the other children. He leaned back in his chair and stretched his arms behind his head, shoulders popping. The man let the two front legs of the chair pop back onto the ground and he looked over at Ellie, smiling a crooked smile on his scruffy face, "Nothin' wrong with bein' a cowboy! Though I'd figure you'd be a cowgirl. Differen' name, same idea." The cowboy dropped his voice to a whisper and he leaned down next to Ellie, covering the side of his mouth with a hand, "And I dun' doubt you'd kick my a** if it came down to it. You're a determined little kiddo, aren't ya?" This time, he DID laugh, but not in a mean way.

It had been a long while since Jack had seen so many children, all in one confined area. Rarely did he set foot in anyone's home, or frequent anywhere a set of children might be. So, despite how warm and friendly it was, the many howls and shouts and overall fun-having of the children was very rapidly bringing about a headache.

But soon, the children calmed down and scrambled to the table as some damn good smelling food was placed on the wooden surface. Jack shook his head as Chetan explained he'd been living on practically nothing, bud didn't waste time in gathering a plate for himself.

The short exchanged about the children's father wasn't quite to Jack's understanding, but he didn't push it further. Instead, he took a few bites of food before looking to the young man sitting next to him, who had thus far remained rather quiet. And that sharp look he'd been getting was, to say the least, a bit unsettling. Swallowing his food, he waved a crudely shaped fork at the boy, "So, Ellie 'ere wants ta be a cowboy. I never caught yer name. And you look like a strong young lad. What're your plans for when ya grow up?"

((YAY DINNERZ. I'm hungry. And zomgs maybe we can get some plot thrown in here in the next few posts! :O))

((ALRIGHT. But only 'cos you asked me nice... then I go WALK MEH DOGGEH. OH. YAH.))

Ellie, from her mother's lap, might have spared Jack one of her rare smiles from her hard, scowling mouth. "You can bet your horse on it!" She said and her mother looked down at her with a raised eyebrow. Ellie smirked up at her.

Chetan laughed a little. "She's seems hard, like her mother." He remarked and laughed more at the expression he received from the young lady. She was jokingly looking terrible, gnashing her teeth and flexing her fingers like claws.

"Yeah." Rebecca said, adjusting her in her lap. "I swear she's more of a handful than her brothers most days." And she laughed. "I'm glad."

Chetan then returned to cleaning his plate (it had been gone with a few forkfuls) and then glanced once at the sharp eyed boy sitting next to Jack. He focused all of his attention on the young man when Jack addressed him.

The young man twisted his mouth. He had the same eyes as his sister, but softer and lighter so that they were bright against his mixed skin. His hair was dark and feathered like his father's for certain, and tumbled down his neck and stopped short. There was something about his face that made him look older than he was and there were softened features that would make him handsome in the future. He had a very serious and solemn face. Jack received a very serious and solemn answer.

"Jim." He said and then leaned forward. "And don't talk to me like a kid. I can shoot just as well as anyone in this town, and I'll be damned if some cut throat thief b*****d is going to talk to ME like I'm some sorta-"

"JIM." Rebecca said in the commanding voice of hers. "He's a guest... I expected better from YOU, at least."

Jim settled back in his chair, still hot around the collar. "When I grow up?" He asked quietly. "I'm gonna be the one hunting dirt like you."

"JAMES." Rebecca said at last, using his full name to exhort full authority on her son. "You best be gettin' to bed before I tan your hide."

Jim threw himself away from the table and stood angrily from his chair. "I can't understand why you let someone like HIM into our house. I swear if he-"

"JAMES." She said one more time.

He threw a hard and angry look at Jack once more and stormed from the room. His siblings watched him go deathly quiet.

"All of you." She said. "I want all of you to go with him." They hardly waited a minute to listen to her and trailed after their eldest brother.

((SRS BUSINESS!!!!!))

"I dun' think that it'd end too well fer me if I did," Jack grinned over at Ellie before really diving into his meal. It was absolutely delicious. Fresh corn, chicken, potatoes, garden beans, and homemade bread were quickly eaten off his plate, and more made its way onto the tin dish.

In the middle of his second helping, he had stopped to ask the boy next to him a simple question, and frankly, had half-expected that sort of answer. The cold light in Jim's pale eyes said a lot before the young man had even opened his mouth. A cold smile crossed Jack's face as Jim spoke. He'd heard this before - many times.

And yet, he still did the things he did.

There was little for him to say to Jim's words, for almost immediately, his mother stepped in and tried to quiet her son. But despite how formidable the woman was, she still had to deliver a few more than expected harsh words before her son complied. And, shortly thereafter, the rest of the children.

As soon as they had all gone to their beds, Jack shook his head and started in on his food again, casting a glance towards Rebecca. Leaning back from his now empty plate, he rested his hands lightly on his now-full stomach and gave a bit of a laugh. "My apologies, ma'am. Seems yer son's got quite th'eye. Pegged me fer what I am right away. But I dun' want ya ta have any worries. 'Tis a rare thing to find such kindness. Out here, not many people're willin' ta take in a pair of strangers such as ourselves," with a hand, Jack indicated himself and Chetan. "And I could do nothin' more than accept such hospitality. I'd let yer son know that, but I'm afraid it'd end in a fire-fight. And unfortunately fer me, I dun' have many rounds on me that I can trust."

Jack laughed at that statement, but there was still a rather serious look on his face. "Not sure what lit that fire in him, but it's good ta see such passion in a young man. He's got focus... That's a lot more than most folks out 'ere." he paused, then added, "I'll have ta stay out of his way, inn't that right, Chetan?"

((Wtf, that looked a LOT longer than it turned out to be. D: ))
PostPosted: Wed Aug 27, 2008 4:53 pm

((LAWLZ. OKAY. POST AGAIN.))

Rebecca only nodded her head as Jack spoke. "I didn't think you seemed the type to turn on a good meal and a warm bed, Jack... and if you even thought about trying to rob MY family." She paused, smirked and tilted her head. "Let's just say you'd think twice about robbing a woman like me again. I've dealt with more yellow bellied bastards in my time than I can count... and some twice as mean as you." She laughed. "I've found you right damned polite."

She looked at Chetan as well. "And you seemed alright. I've dealt with red men too, but you're definitely something, Chetan." She smiled. "What a face you had on when you came riding into town!" She howled with laughter. "I nearly lost it if I hadn't had been so shocked!"

Chetan returned her smile. "Any friend of the People is a friend of mine... even if the People aren't always so wise."

She laughed. "Most clear headed thinker..." She shook her head. "Just like Jim..." She looked to Jack. "He's had his heart in the right place ever since he learnt right from wrong... doesn't care who you are, he knows a bad thing when he sees one." Rebecca smiled wistfully. "He's always know just what he was going to do ever since his father."

Chetan nodded his dark head wisely. "He's seen a lot." He just seemed to know and then flashed a smile at Jack. "I guess the more I spend time with you the more I'll HAVE to look out for the lawmen, won't I?" And he laughed.

Rebecca grinned at the pair of them. "Well, here I am keepin' you two up when I'm sure you've had a long day... why don't you two just get on to bed now?" She jerked her head down the hall. "I got a spare bed in the last room on the left... I'll let you two fight tooth and nail for it."

((YAY SLEEPY TIME!))

"Heh, ya got me. I'm a low-down, dirty scumbag of a man, but it's easy enough ta find my good side. Can't say no to a good meal 'n a warm bed." He offered her an easy smile. "I'm not a stupid man. There's no way in hell I'd try 'n rob you. And hey, just 'cos I do a few questionable things doesn't mean I dun' have ta show some manners when th'time comes for 'em."

Jack left little comment about Rebecca's eldest son. It was obvious they weren't the type to get along, and he didn't dare say anything ill about the boy. Instead, he puzzled quietly about what Chetan had said to the woman - as if he'd known - and brushed off his well-worn hat.

Smirking at the Indian, he nodded, "I warned ya 'bout that one."

When the place they were to take for their rest was indicated, Jack gave a thankful nod and started down the hallway, his spurred boots clinking as he walked. "G'night then, ma'am! If I dun' see ya before we leave, thanks." Nodding, he disappeared into the room, taking the bed before Chetan had a chance to complain. He had a feeling the young man wouldn't mind anyway. After all, he'd said he'd been living on long grass and river water. A real bed was probably out of reach.

Shedding all but his jeans, Jack got into the bed and was almost immediately asleep.

((LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAAAAAAAIN~))

It was before dawn that Jack stirred, his senses already alight with the need to keep moving. He'd been quite thankful for the time he'd spent in a (mostly) welcoming home and for the wonderful meal, but he knew it was time to get moving.

So, he pulled the blankets off him and fumbled around in the dark for the rest of his clothes. He nearly tripped over Chetan, who had happily plopped down on the floor and started snoozing. Prodding the young man with a toe, he tried to quietly wake him up. "Time ta go, partner," the cowboy muttered as he shoved his hat on his head and started buttoning up his shirt. The vest and jacket came next, and finally his boots.

Securing his belt around his waist, he made sure his guns were loose in their holsters before quietly making his way to the door. "Let's get outta here."

What he hadn't expected was to nearly run right into Jim, who too seemed awake and ready to go.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 29, 2008 7:59 am

((OOOH YEEEAH D:<. LET'S DO THIS THING.))

Chetan didn't complain at all when he was banished to the floor. In fact, Chetan had really never slept in an actual bed, what with all that hay in the mattress and feathered blankets and pillows. Sounded bad on the back to him.

"White man has tender back... red man sleeps in the dirt." And he laughed.

He took to the floor with a blanket he often tossed over George when it rained and slept beneath the window. There, where he could still see starlight, made him feel more at ease and a few moments he was out.

Though he did a mumble a: "Goodnight, white man." Before he was completely out.

In the dim light before dawn, Chetan was already awake. His face was turned towards the window to catch the first light, and then there was the rough stumblings of Jack awake. Chetan turned his head to watch him. He nearly tripped over him. Chetan had to laugh a little at his clumsiness in the dark and squirmed a little when he found himself poked with a toe.

Chetan sat up wide awake and ready. His dark eyes shone brightly in the faded light. He rubbed at his face. "Not the kind to say goodbye?" He said and got lightly to his feet. His clothes were already mostly on, being that they consisted of pants and then his moccasins which he slid into.

He was rolling up George's blanket and slinging it across his back, over one shoulder, and tying it off across his chest when Jack first ran into trouble. He moved up behind him. "Sure doesn't look like you're going anywhere." Chetan said of his stopped position in the doorway. He met the serious face of Jim.

The young man had a pack strapped to his back and a stubbornly set face. "I'm coming." He said. He was looking at Jack at first, but now was looking intently at Chetan. "And you can't stop me."

Chetan smiled kindly as he could. "What would a boy like you want with a couple of strangers? Your mother needs you here, doesn't she? You're a man in this house."

Jim's face was still set. "I have to come."

Chetan exchanged a look with Jack. "Why?" Was his simple question.

"I need to know about my father's tribe. YOU can teach me... AND you can show me."

Chetan shook his head. "What makes you think I was in his tribe?" He pressed past the boy, waving for Jack to follow.

Jim stayed in Jack's path. "I'm coming." He repeated.

"No, I'm not," Jack said quietly, "Usually people can't wait ta see me leave. Not many bother with pleasantries when I'm 'round." And it seemed that would remain the case. When he all but ran into Jim, the boy didn't give an early morning greeting, a smile... Anything. No, he was packed like he was headed out somewhere, and claimed that somewhere would be wherever Jack and Chetan were going.

Jack frowned at the young man, green eyes searching his young dark face. "No." He took a step forward, but was blocked yet again by Jim. The cowboy's frown deepened. "Yer NOT comin' with us, kid." And he sounded like he meant it.

But that didn't deter Jim's own determination, and even when Chetan passed him, the boy made sure that Jack couldn't. "Damn it, yer not comin' with us!" He hissed, drawing his gun and pressing it against Jim's chest. He had no intention of shooting the boy - he didn't want to suffer the wrath of an angry mother, especially one as formidable as he knew Rebecca could be - but he DID want to leave.

"I dun' need some kid runnin' after us, squealin' to the law the moment somethin' doesn't sit right with 'im. You wanna learn 'bout yer daddy's tribe, there's nothin' wrong with that, but as Chetan said, you dun' even know if he's from th'same place. So why doncha go back ta bed before somethin' unwanted really happens, hmm?" With an extra little push for good measure, Jack got around Jim and holstered his weapon, looking rather irritable.

He did take a moment to turn back towards Jim and give a very stern point of his finger, "You'd better not let me catch ya tailin' us. I'd rather not have anythin' tragic on my conscience 'cos of some idiot kid not doin' what he was told."

Okay, so Jack might have been taking it a bit too far. Jim looked old enough to be, as Chetan had said, the man of the house, but even a few years difference was enough to speak for worlds of experience. Jack was pretty sure this child had rarely left his own home, much less the town, and it was well known that the roads between the dusty little places people were trying to live were even worse. And then there were bandits (Jack didn't worry too much about THEM though) and a lot of nature, as well as the Red Men. Chetan had been a kind one... But there were tribes out there that'd rather skin you alive than try and talk.

That, and Jack simply didn't want Jim to come along.

So, words said, Jack and Chetan quietly picked their way to the front door and left. They made a quick stop by the stables to gather Jack's horse, and after throwing a saddle on the animal and checking his supplies, they were ready to move. Daylight's first fingers crawled across the now purple-pink sky, a few clouds remained from the previous night's storm. They'd burn up as soon as the sun was out in full force, but until that time, they reflected the early morning colors of the desert sky.

((Haha I really need to name his horse... AND ALSO they're like... outside the stables in case you want Jim to show up again. XD))

((POSTIE TIME AGAIN. NOWAI.))

When Chetan left, Jim really rather wished he hadn't; he had left the wolf behind for Jim to deal with. Next thing he knew he was on the bad end of the gun, the hard metal pressed into the center of his chest. But did Jim seem put off? He didn't flinch, didn't blink, didn't twitch, he kept his light eyes on Jack's face.

Jim's frown deepened into an almost snarl at his words. When Jack pushed him out of the way he swung around glaring after him in the dark. "But he HAS to know." He said after him. "I KNOW he knows."

When he was threatened not to tail, Jim was left alone in the dark hall. He clenched his fists and glared hard long after they were gone.

Chetan looked up to Jack on his horse. "Did you take care of him?" He wanted to know. He grinned. The young Indian was walking alongside Jack's horse, a hand on the animal's flank. "He seems stubborn."

And just as the words were out of his mouth, Jim was back again. He was saddled up on a horse almost too big for him; a strong palomino. He trotted up to them with Chetan's horse in tow. The wild horse seemed peaceable about being led by the young man. Jim looked twice as stubborn as ever. His pack was with him, as well as his shot gun.

Chetan looked at him wide eyed for a moment and then laughed quietly his wild laugh. "Well, Jack. I'm sorry to say, but when a boy can tame a wild horse, I would say he's pretty determined." He clucked quietly and George gently trotted to butt Chetan's ear with his nose. He laughed again and looked to Jack simply.

Jim was looking to him as well. "I meant it when I said I was coming." He said in a voice too serious for such a young man.

((Lolz, you're sitting next to me. XD))

Jack grunted at Chetan's question, shaking his head, "Probably not." He murmured, tugging on his horse's reigns to keep the animal moving. The man didn't have high hopes that that Jim child would stay behind, but it would have been nice.

And as that question had been posed, there he was, riding a horse and looking irritable. George was in tow, which was rather surprising. Wasn't the animal a wild horse? Great.

"Determined ta be stupid," Jack said, glowering at the boy sitting atop the horse. With a practiced movement, he mounted his own horse and stepped up alongside the young man, pursing his lips as he searched for words that might get through to Jim. He didn't have much hope for that either.

"And I meant it when I said ya couldn't. Git off that damn horse and go back home." And to reiterate his point, he lashed out and grabbed the front of Jim's shirt in his gloved hands, "Need help?" He gave a rather hefty tug and pulled Jim out of his saddle. The boy landed on his feet, then rump in the dusty road. "Now STAY."

"C'mon," Jack said almost angrily to Chetan, and with a good kick, sent his horse into a gallop down the road. If he couldn't keep the kid from following, maybe he could just outrun him.

((Haha you are STILL sitting next to me!))
