"Actually, Kodiak, I don't think I've seen another Painter since I was very small. I haven't had the benefit of observation or reading," Nila said nervously. She hadn't felt that a lack of an education was a bad thing before, but now her lack felt somewhat painful. "We'll see what happens when we go to the Island, depending on the volcano."

Florian's eyes widened. "Really, Nila? You must visit the canyon sometime. I guess it'd be a bit scary at first, but me and Kodiak could show you round - right?" He glanced over at his companion with a hopeful grin. "People are fun. They're mostly nice, and...yeah." He shrugged, a little embarrassed. "Reading is good, too, but the the reason I'm travelling is that I figured it was time to see things for myself."

Kodiak could hear the nervousness in Nila's voice. She appeared worried about not having spent time reading books. "We each follow different paths. No path is more right than another. You've done things that I've never even thought of doing." He smiled warmly at her. "I'm honored to be one of your new acquaintances. And as Florian said, if you decide to visit the canyon, you may call on us for assistance."
Kodiak looked at Florian, "I agree, people are very interesting. They can be down right funny sometimes. Have you acquired one of your own yet?"

"A person of my own?" Florian stared at the older painter, uncomprehending, for a few moments. "What do you...oh!" Realisation hit, and he grinned in embarrassment. "Like, a mate?"
Shaking his head, the brightly coloured painter continued, "No. I'm too young for that still. Some of my friends are settling down, but it's not something I've thought about yet... that is what you meant, right?" It was a slightly odd question, but he supposed it did follow on from their conversation, and there wasn't really anything else Kodiak could have meant.

Kodiak chuckled at Florian. "No, no no. I can be too curious at times, but I try not to pry into another's personal life. By person, I meant a two-legged, soft skinned companion. Something like having a familiar, but they're a little more intelligent. Since you lived in the Canyon, I just wondered if you'd adopted one."

"Oh!" And now Florian was really embarrassed. If he'd been on the ground, and not somewhat awkwardly perched on a tree branch, he would have shuffled his feet nervously. As it was, he looked down, avoiding the faces of his companions, and his reply was slightly muffled since he was speaking to his feet and not to them. "Oh, no, I haven't... hadn't really thought about it. Surely they'd get in the way? I mean they can't fly... um, that is, no offence meant," he added, looking up at last. "Why, do either of you have one?"

Nila shook her head. "I've never seen anything with two legs before, except birds, let alone adopted one. This is the first time I can actually remember seeing other Sandpainters."

"I don't have any pets, but I hear that humans can be useful to have around."
Looking at Nila, "All the more reason for you to visit the Canyon some day. Humans are an interesting lot to observe in their daily routines. They seem to put importance on trivial things."
Kodiak noticed Florian's shifting about awkwardly on the tree branch. "Since sunrise has come and gone, we could leave these uncomfortable tree branches and find a more comfortable place to continue our conversations."

"Yeah, Nila, you should definitely visit some time," Florian added encouragingly. "And..." He glanced at Kodiak. "I think I'm a bit tangled in with these branches, but moving sounds like a good idea." If I can get out... the young painter thought uncertainly, smiling down at the female who had had the sense to stay on the ground. He began to gingerly manoeuvre his wings upwards and out of the many tiny branches.
The sunrise had been as beautiful as he'd expected, and after that and the unexpected new friends he'd made, he'd completely forgotten what he intended to do next. "Did you have anywhere in mind, Kodiak?" he asked, too busy concentrating on untangling himself to look up at the older painter.

"Well, I think I'll be moving on. I'll definitely see you again someday." Nila bowed her head and started moving off to a more open space where she could continue flying north and east. She still wanted to explore the island in that direction.

With the sunrise come and gone, the three painters departed on separate paths, each following it's own destiny.
