Tolfitken nodded and smiled, "I've had a few songs like that." She perked her ears a little and cocked her head to the head to the side again. "Yes, it is a pity... Maybe we could each find a duet we know and pick one to learn?" she suggested, her blue and red eyes glowing happily at the thought.

JoJo cocked his head to one side, pondering the idea. "Hmm......sounds fair enough. But I don't know which song I would pick, to be honest. I've heard plenty of nice duets. But I would be game to learn any one that YOU pick." He noted the happy sparkle in Tolfitken's eyes, and it made him think of a time when he had seen taht same sparkle, alive with hopes and good times to come. The thought seemed to gash him raw, and before he could stop it, a runaway tear was trickling out of one eye and making its way down his face.

"One I would pick... I don't know that many... What would be a good one...?" she murmurred, running through the songs she did know in her head. Her attention was distracted by a glittering of light and the laughter in her eyes died as she saw the tear. "Mm..." she looked down at her paws worriedly, not knowing what to say. Her voice sounded quiet even to her own ears as she offered, "Ummm, we don't have to learn how to do a new duet if you don't want to..." She found herself overly reluctant to make him do anything that would make him sad, and a little startled that for once he actually was sad, instead of the usual anger he had shown before. She risked a hesitant peek up at him, wondering what had changed other than that they had found an understanding from their previous argument.

JoJo shook his head quickly, and the teardrop flew away and landed in the grass, evaporating into nothingness, the way he thought it ought to be. Still, he felt that he at least ought to explain, lest it end in a huff the way it did before.
He looked at Tolfitken steadily, choosing his words carefully. "No, it isn't that. It's just that......you reminded me just then of someone I knew, that's all." He didn't feel much like elaborating, but he realized that if Tolfitken asked, he would probably find himself telling her more, if she wanted to know it.

"I do? Who?" her curious mouth asked before she could stop it. Her eyes widened, making her blink and look shamefully to the ground again, "I'm sorry, you don't have to tell me if you want to..." She realized that though she had told him of her past, at least the main reason why she didn't like being left alone, he hadn't said much of his. Knowing she had no right to ask she kept silent again, though her mind was now turning over the question and wondering if it would ever be answered.

JoJo blinked and looked at Tolfitken with his eyebrows raised. It was as if she had read his mind. He found himself speaking more freely than he thought he would to anyone else who had had the gall to ask him the same question.
"He was a boy. A human boy. He was the only human I knew that never tried to catch me. He had sparkling eyes....and when you looked so hopeful just then, you looked so much like him."

"Oh," she said quietly, wondering who the human boy was and if her eyes sparkled. She shrugged the second thought away, figuring she could just look at herself in the pond later, and turned her attention back to JoJo. She tilted her head to look at the sky again, pondering out loud, "I looked hopeful? I don't think I've looked like that in a while... Isn't it a good thing?" Hoping her musings hadn't made him more sad, she kept her gaze trained to the sky and tried to resist the urge to ask more questions about the boy.

JoJo's eyes were at the ground, seeing his green hair in the blades of grass, and he knew that if he looked up at the sky, he was in danger of finding the shade of blue that his eyes were, even if they were more like ocean water.
He looked up and observed Tolfitken staring up at the sky, but didn't join her; he was afrais that if he did, he would find that elusive shade and another tear might escape. Instead, he nodded, forgetting that Tolfitken couldntt see the gesture. "It IS a good thing, and something I tend to envy sometimes. To be vibrant, full of life, hopeful....." He let out a long sigh. "I've never had much hope. For anything."

Her gaze dropped from the sky to rest on JoJo, her eyes filling with a little of the hope from before, but more with the determination she was used to having in them. "Well, how does one go about changing that?" she asked, figuring that if he had given her hope she ought to return the favor. Her mood had lightened again, now it was time for his. All she had heard him sing so far were sad songs, and though they were beautiful, she knew that the only thing with more power than despair was hope. If she was to get her way, the forest would resonate with a deeper and far more lively meaning than despair from every rootlet and insect to every leaf and bird.

(Kind of sappy and cliche, I know, but when her determination kicks in she doesn't care if it is sappy or not... >.>)

(Bring on the sap! 8D)

JoJo smiled and shook his head a little. "That's a nice thought, but I don't think I can ever hope. Even when I was born there was no hope. I did have hope a few times, but it never got me anywhere. I hoped of escaping when I was younger; I escaped alright, but I met people and dared to hope again that I'd found a place in the world, and I wouldn't HAVE to roam around and predict disaster. So much for THAT happening. I lost any chances I had and.....well, having all teh hopes you ever had dashed at the same time......it kinda makes you not want to hope anymore, you know? Like if you have something nice, like a bracelet, and every time you wear a bracelet it fells off somewhere and you lose it and get another one, wouldn't you eventually not want to get any more bracelets?"

(I don't think he's ever said so much. oO)

Soaking that in a little, she responded, "No, knowing me I'd be stubborn and duct tape them on..." She let out a half-hearted laugh and continued. "If you stop getting the bracelet, then don't you think you would miss out on having a bracelet for those few times that it really matters to have a bracelet?" she said, hoping her explanation wasn't too confusing, "Without hope you don't have any fun." The last part was a little simplistic and childish, but she thought it got more of the point across.

JoJo managed a small humorless chuckle. "Okay, so that wasn't the best example." He pondered Tolfitken's words for a minute, then replied. "Well, if you wind up really REALLY sad from it, wouldn't it be better to just stop? Because if you just keep at it, before long you'll be so hurt that that's all you'll have is pain; anythingother emotions just get swallowed up." He shrugged. "Well, sometimes I think I'm not meant to have fun. Or friends....."

Tolfitken shook her head, "But if you don't have any fun either you aren't really living, so it really wouldn't matter if you wound up sad or indifferent, so why not try for happy?" Frowning a little, her blue and red eyes glowing feircely she growled firmly, "Everyone is meant to have fun and freinds!" She mainly said this because she had to beleive it, too; if he couldn't find a freind, what were the chances of her finding one? Most of her own family even neglected her. "One of Neko's theories, I think it's actually an old philosophy, is that everything wants to be in balance. This includes good and bad feelings and times; so, the more bad times your life starts with, the more good times there will be in store later. If you give up, then those good times aren't really getting a chance to show up..."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 04, 2008 7:21 pm

JoJo looked at Tolfitken with serious eyes. "I know it's no way to live; you don't know how many times I wish that I had died from my injury after I escaped. I wouldn't have minded, but I had to be found by a bunch that I would never wish harm on, and yet harm came anyway. It seems like the balance I get in my own life is good things happen, and they get taken away."
He straightened and dared to look into the clear blue sky. "I read something in a book once that had blown into my cave after a storm. I could only make out one bit, and it said, 'Ours is a high and lonely destiny.' I felt like it was speaking to me; I know it's my destiny, whether I want it or not, to warn others of disaster and take everybody's flack. And watch any almost friends either turn on me or die."

With equally serious eyes she replied, "Well, I'm not going to turn on you, so you might as well have fun and be my freind until I die." She hadn't meant to be so blunt about it, but all the pretty words in the world couldn't change the truth as she saw it. "But just so you know, I don't plan on dieing for a long, long while," she added, her eyes and voice both hard, heavy, and somewhat playful at the same time. She didn't beleive anyone could be killed just by being freinds with another, and she was bound and determined to prove that. And have fun like she used to. If she did end up dieing, at least then she wouldn't regret it.
