D gave himself a quick check and looked back at York. "Yes, I appear to be functioning normally...but I don't think thats what you really asked me..." he paused and thought for several seconds.

"I am...confused...I can't seem to explain it any more accurately than that..." he looked away for a second. " I don't want it to go away though, York...I think ...I think I..." he looked up at York hoping that maybe somehow he'd understand what it was that he wanted to say but couldn't find the words for.

York leaned over the small table and nuzzled D. "I think I understand," he murmured. He paused, not sure if he could explain either. "I don't think I can explain it any more accurately, though." He closed his eyes and let time drift away. "But for what it's worth...I think I understand. I'm here for you, D...I'll always be here for you, no matter what happens."

He didn't know how long he stood there, but finally he pulled himself away and set himself on the bowl of fruit with a will. Once he finished, he could get to work securing the windows so that they might not wake up one morning--or night--to unwelcome intruders.

D smiled and nuzzled York back. "I will always be here for you too, York." D murmured back closing his eyes and just focusing on the feel of flesh to flesh. They'd been mind to mind more times than D could count but this...this was special and D always savored it.

He was a little regretful when York pulled away, but the logic kicked back in and D knew that York and he had things to do tonight and if they were going to get done they couldn't stand in the living room all night. D gave one more half smile before he turned to get the dishes done before they left.

York reluctantly finished his bowl of fruit and the salad. Piling his dishes in the stack by the sink, he touched D lightly with the tip of his tail. He pulled out a cardboard box of tools to find what he needed to place some force fields on the windows...

((Sorry for the lame entry, I'm tired...urgh...good night!))

((Its alright. I'm tired too.))

D set the clean dishes on the right side of the sink and picked up the bowls and placed them under the running water. He idly flicked his tail and brushed it along York's back. "Second kit from the right." D said without looking up. He'd memorized the different contents of that box a long time ago. He'd found it saved time even if York did have them labeled. Especially if it was something on the left.

York grinned; "Thanks, D!" He slid that box back and pulled out the correct one. Carefully selecting the equipment, he began to put the field generators together piece by piece.

York had long since given up labelling the boxes; if it was dark, or if the box was on the left, it was simply easier to ask D. All of the boxes he had here had been with them in their last apartment; they were his standard kits for creating locks and other such security devices. Smaller boxes he kept in the bedroom contained his tools for picking locks and foiling devices. Those he had memorized, partly because they contained basic gear, but also because it was a small kit.

Half an hour of work later, York had the generators placed on the windows. "Time to hook 'em up, D!" he told his partner. "Let's see if we can get them in place before tomorrow morning. Then we can get a good night's sleep."

D nodded. He'd finished the dishes, wiped down the counters and dusted a bit in the living room. "Alright." he said looping a towel through the handle on the stove.

"Would you like me to assist you in getting the remote power sources installed or stay here and put the actual units in the windows?" he asked. Although he wasn't very mechanically inclined he'd picked up enough over the years to be able to do small simple jobs on his own. D wasn't sure how he wanted to York to answer. On one paw going with York meant they'd get to spend more time together and talk, although though if D put the units in here and York put in the power sources they'd be done in half the time which meant more time together that they weren't working. D sighed and tried to figure out which one he wanted more.

York was similiarly torn. Did he want more time with his partner, or more time not doing work? The second option won out; after they finished, D could read to him and they could get some sleep. "How about you put the units on the windows? That way we can get things done faster." He picked up a flashlight and padded out the door into the dim twilight outside. They had wired things to powergrids before; their limited funds did not allow for high power bills. York still wondered if the government had deliberately robbed him of any skills he could use outside of the program to get a regular job.

D nodded and watched York leave. Although he knew it wouldn't take York long and they'd be back together again soon, D couldn't help but feel a sudden wave of longing and loneliness. "Be careful..." he said rather late. York was already gone.

D then went and gathered the small units to go in the corners of the windows and the tools he needed. He went over to the windows and opened one and slid out onto the fire escape. Neither he or York liked the fire escape being here but they hadn't really had much choice. On the up side it did give a way for York to leave the apartment without using the front door.

D looked around to see if anyone was watching and then carefully set the first unit on the corner of the window and began attaching it.

Soon after acquiring the apartment, York had investigated it thoroughly. The fire escape in particular bothered him; it had no lock at all, and it could easily be used by anyone. On the other hand, it was an extra entrance--anyone he was worried about meeting would never think of using the fire escape. He had compromised by padlocking it shut, promising that he would get a better lock as soon as possible.

He padded down the rickety stairs to the darkening alleyway behind the apartment block. Luckily, a chill wind convinced their neighbors to close the windows; no one would catch him wire the units up. "Is it attached?" he hissed to D. "Be careful up there!" he added. The thought of D falling and getting injured frightened him beyond belief, even if some small part of York reminded him that it was unlikely that an AI could be harmed from a fall.

D's ear twitched as he heard York. He finished hooking up the unit he was on and then moved to the edge of the fire escape. "They're all attached and giving the green light, York. They're ready when you are." he said giving his partner a faint smile.

"Good!" York grinned. He turned back to his end of the job.

"Done," he muttered after a while. Getting to his feet, he clattered back up the fire escape. "That should take care of the windows." He opened held the door open for D, pausing to listen for anyone else in the alley. It was quiet as usual; it appeared that no one had noticed them hooking up the force field generators. Secure in the knowledge of a plan perfectly executed, he slipped inside and padlocked the door once more.

Once they were back inside D waited for York to finish with the lock before he practically tackled his partner getting between his front legs and nuzzling against his chest. Although the action didn't actually make much sense to D it felt right.

"What would you like to do for the rest of the evening?" D asked securely wedged up against York. His face was half buried in the fur on York's so his voice was muffled. But he was pretty sure York understood what he'd said. His partner seemed to have a sixth sense for understanding him even when he was being unintelligible.

Startled by his partner's sudden display of affection, York froze. As D buried his face into York's chest, he relaxed, wrapping his arms around D. Though surprised at D's unusual action, he made no move to disentangle himself. I couldn't even if I wanted to... he realized. And I don't want to.

"I...I was wondering if you could read to me?" he asked shyly. After many years together, he could tell what D was saying no matter how muffled his voice got. In the same way, he was sure that D could understand him when he left words out of his sentences, as he was liable to do in pain or distress. He wasn't sure whether it was sixth sense or simply their close association with each other for a long time. Part of him insisted that sharing a mind gave them each a clear view of how the other felt, but some deeper part of him, the same part that locked his limbs in place, insisted that it was because they were meant for each other...

D nodded and gently rubbed his head against York. "What do you feel like?" he asked so that he could call up the proper data file while York got the book.

Even if he couldn't read it himself, York liked to have it in his hand while D recited the contents. Although it din't make much sense, D liked the book being there. It made him feel more like a living being than a program. He wondered idly if thats why York did it..
