TheEscapist58 [neon.zombie] Oh yeah, I love music in different languages, it's so helpful! A good long set of the language in a relatively easy-to-learn format, what's not to like? Plus, I think you get a feel for the culture as well. Plus, it's always a good starter for things to translate back into your native language - lyrics tend to be idiomatic, so it always helps you with the nuances of the language. not necessarily the translating thing... ive tried translating songs from russian to english with horrible results..lol.. german seems to work pretty well though...at least i think so cus i dont speak german, but ive heard songs that have both an english and german version and they sound the same and the lyrics are direct translations... example: gott ist ein popstar/god is a popstar by Oomph! they lyrics are basically direct translations of each other.. Ahh yes, quite often one can miss the point, lost in translation right? Haha... But true, German tends to be the most simple, I think, to translate (even in one's head as you're listening to it)...

Rammstein got me (and my friend Slip) into German, so, of course, when we're cruising along in his car and a Rammstein or a Megaherz song happens to come on the iPod, we both start singing out loud. (Of course, out of the two of us, I'm the only one who has the slightest idea what they're saying. lol )
I also like to sing in Spanish to some Santana songs.
But, on the whole, I don't really listen to music for the sole purpose that it's in a different language (even German). For example, unless Tokio Hotel's guitarist can bust out in a Kirk Hammett-style solo from time to time, I probably won't listen to 'em.

Omg I LOVE singing in Japanese biggrin Makes people think yer crazy lol. I remember listening to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me on the radio and one of the guests was saying the best way to stay safe in NYC was skip down the streets and sing in a foreign language- people will stay away from you biggrin But listening to music in general in a foreign language is a good idea cause 1, it's fun and you can choose which songs, 2, you can get a feel for more casual language and 3, you can sing along and practice biggrin

Hey cool! Thank you for the great tip! Now I can start my Basshunter and Rammstein singalong practices. rofl
I suck what it comes to anything related with music though. I hope others can handle my studies. biggrin
Btw, if you want to find new singers/bands singing in Finnish feel free to ask in my profile, OK? It's because I think it's really cool that some people want to learn Finnish. lol

I could remember every Spice Girls' song from the album Spiceworld, I was 4-5 years back then. I don't remember how my English pronounciation sounded, but at least all the aunties in the kindergarten were chukling. =3
I don't really pay attention to listening music in different languages, but I do think it's helpful.. But personally I usually find playing games and watching movies in different languages more helpful. And when I watched Mi Gorda Bella from TV, I learned a lot of random phrases by accident.

One annoying thing about listening to non Natlang music with your friend is that there's always that one person who has to ask "what are they saying?!?1?"....every.....five....seconds! xp

They speak Spanish, Hindustani, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Russian, Armenian, Farsi, or Arabic.

TheEscapist58 Does everyone agree that the best way to learn the phonetics of a language is to sing along with songs in that language? lol..i find it very usefull and fun! Now, thanks to Nightwish and Indica, i can pronounce and sort of read in finnish, although i have absolutely no idea what i'm saying... Also, singing along in french helps me learn it better and improve my pronounciation... anyone else feel this way??
To an extent this is true, but when singing pronunciation is often a bit different than the spoken version of a language.
Like in French, sometimes the schwa (silent e) at the end of words is pronounced when sung but never pronounced conversationally unless you speak a certain dialect of French.
