Kiyae key word being "random" yes, I think random smut is completely distasteful and should not be written in books. Tasteful, impostant smut however, is perfectly fine with me. Again, key word being "random". If it's a major action scene, then suddenly that scene is over and a new chapter starts out with the two heroes starting off a completely pointless high-energy sex scene and then having a ciggy afterwords, that's pathetic and stupid. Otherwise, I like the smut ninja i agree totally "random" is the key word

Graphic, explicit sex in books are grounds for me to throw them out. When sexual content is necessary, its okay. Some books just need it for th story line.

I'm not sure if it's every "totally necessary". It never has to be explicit, l think it should be left up to the readers imagination. That way those of us who would not like to read the smut don't have to, but those who feel it necessary can imagine all they like.

It really depends on that book. If the sex makes little to no sense, and is only there for smutty pointless purposes, then i generally just flip the pages until it's done. But if there is an actual purpose to it, and it's very evident there is a purpose for it, I'll read it. It doesn't bother me especially, it just gets annoying when it's a tad over the top. It also depends on the genre of book as well of course. If it's a romance novel, there is probably more of a chance for it, but if it's a novel about say... a group of nerds or something roleplaying (*i don't know, just making an example*) Smut would be fairly... out of place shall we say.

I'm fine with it in a book. The only thing I don't like about it is when it reoccurs over and over in a disgusting fashion. I, myself have read a few books that had a few sexual encounters, but they were not lewd and actually helped the book along. Besides that... as long as it has a pretty good plot going, it doesn't bother me one bit.

If it's done tastefully and actually serves a purpose for the story then I rather like a little smut cool

Besides that... as long as it has a pretty good plot going, it doesn't bother me one bit. Exactly. I was reading The Shelters of Stone by Jean M. Auel a while ago, and it started out good, but then thirty pages into it I ran into the most explicit smut scene ever. A complete turn-off, really. After that, the story never really recovered.
This is just a basic example of what needless or too explicit smut can do to a story. I don't mind if there's sex in a book, but if it doesn't tie in with the plot, I prefer foreshadowing and afterglow and such. I have, however, run into very good plot-related smut, for instance in Kushiël's Dart and Kushiël's Chosen by Jacqueline Carey.

I like smut as long as there's a lead up to it, like the characters have been dating for most of the book. If two characters, friends/strangers/whatever, start doing the horizontal dance seemingly out of nowhere then it DOESN'T work...Well, unless the book is advertised by the summary on the back cover as being meant to be almost pure smut; random sex is okay in that case because readers were told what to expect.

I really don't mind it. I've been reading books that seemed to have pretty graphic sex scenes in them - but probably actually haven't - since I was about twelve. I've never come across anything with pointless smut either really...
Dragon_Fire1995 Eh...I just skim over those parts in books, though there is a stupid, needless one in the book "saberiel' somone turned this guy to wood and got him naked first, and now this girl finds him naked! and thinking hes a wood statue she studys him....I could go without reading that all my life.
Hehe, what the-? You really think thats bad? From your username, I'm guessing you're like, about thirteen, right? I read Sabriel when I was twelve, and while I had a bit of a giggle over it, it wasn't something that made me immediately run to my friend to show her.
Yeah, I had only one friend at the time. And we both read way too much. And came across our first smutty novels at about the same time, got really giggly and excited, and traded stories with each other the next time we saw each other. And then someone would always come up and ask what was so funny as we stood in the middle of the locker room, book open between us and we'd blush and be like, "Umm..." and that was why we had no other friends! People still think we're lesbians... Anyway, then we read more and more smut and suddenly it wasn't so exciting anymore, just another part of the book. Though we still tell each other if we come across anything really graphic, which we rarely do in "real" fiction. Just fanfiction mostly.

I really dislike reading sex scenes in books because they aren't really necessary in most plot lines. My dad and I once talked about this years ago and he shared that in one of his favorite books(The Spy Who Came in from the Cold?) there was a part that just ended with "And they spent the night as lovers". Concise, left it all to the imagination.
I have no idea why my dad and I talked about this btw.

I found out there is a random graphic scene in the book I am currently reading "Touch the Dark" by Karen Chance.I found out from some reviews I read. Then I thought "Oh God, I thought this was a young adult novel. I better keep this to myself, and not tell my mom then". I'm silly but this kind of thing...ugh. I think it's unnecessary sometimes, exspecially if it's 'suppose' to be a young adult novel. (Yes there's some in there too!)

I don't like it when it's all graphic and full of certain slang words for certain parts... >.<
But sometimes it's really fitting and sweet, like the sex scenes in Anne Rice's novels. Those are far too elegant and tasteful to be called "smutty".
