While Lise's outburst was initially surprising to Fenrys, the end result was little more than a couple of stunned blinks. He was, quite used to being yelled at by basically everyone that surrounded him. In fact, this was so much so that even in combat, his role among his comrades was to violently anger whatever he was fighting to the point where the target would focus all of it's attacks on Fenrys, and not on any of his friends, most of whom were significantly less armored, but significantly more capable of causing death and destruction. One could say he was singularly gifted at pissing things off. People, beastmen, small furry woodland creatures; it didn't matter, everything just had a natural tendency to hate Fenrys, and it had long ceased to bother him. So when Lise the Mail Clerk, joined the ranks of the majority of the populace of Vana'diel Fenrys did exactly this:

He blinked twice, then laughed. Hard. And a lot. It could almost be construed as insulting, most especially since it seemed like he had very little to be laughing about. When finally he quieted down, he clutched his sides for a moment then said "I'm sorry, I just find the concept of someone enjoying the miserable task of counting and sorting mail I will never even read hilarious. From what I'm told the Federation has lost no less than thirteen clerks to this most mundane task. No doubt how you managed to find this job. Well, no matter, I'm glad you like where you are, I'll be sure to let Parliament know they've found a real keeper down here." Fenrys flitted his eyes very briefly over to where Chime was standing, catching a glimpse of her reading one of his letters, but turned on his heel towards the exit before making his glance obvious. "C'mon Seth, let's go get you outfitted."

He strode towards the door, but stopped just short of exiting, and turned around once more. He seemed to gaze at the still massive piles of his mail sitting strewn across the room and emitted a small "Oh." Very nonchalantly; as if he were doing something simple, like breathing or blinking, Fenrys unsheathed his sword and shouted "SERAPH BLADE!" while making a crosswise cut into the empty air in front of him. A brilliant golden light flooded through the room for an instant, and as quickly as it had come, it was gone, except that it had neatly vaporized every item in the room that bore his name. Hey, he wasn't one of the best Paladins in the world for nothing.

After rooting through more letters, hunched over and crouched, Seth's catlike ears perked up to hear his name.

"C'mon Seth, let's go get you outfitted." Fenrys had said.

'I like the sound'a that.' Seth thought with a smile only a cat could match, and scooped up the last few baubles.

He fell over when Fenrys did whatever little spell that he did, blinking as the mail was nearly vaporized. Panicked, he searched his person for the baubles he had found, and then let a sigh of relief. They were still there.

Hopping up, he looked over at Tryph somewhat longingly, and then to Chime neutrally, and then finally to Lise, looking at her with a slight bit of resentment for ignoring him.

He turned towards Fenrys and took a few steps nearer to him.

"Ready when you are." Seth said with a slight grin. The Mithra was more than ready to get some newer gear. He still wanted to pay a visit to his fence, though. The disgruntled Tarutaru would die if he saw the Paladin walking through his front door.

Seth giggled slightly at the thought.

Tryph whimpered and covered her head, as if it were some form of instinct: even before Fenrys has signalled his attack by shouting, she was trying to get away from it. When the proverbial dust settled and Tryph opened her liquid eyes once more, she blinked in suprise at how empty the room looked all of a sudden.

Okay, so this... this was a bad idea. Who needs the tools anyway, huh? Why don't I just...

She turned towards the doorway, eyes meeting briefly with Seth's. She froze once more and turned away quickly.

... Why don't I just get the package...

Looking towards the Elvaan woman and the newest arrival, Tryph bit her lip, still awaiting service despite having arrived before the silver-skinned Gradian.

... And get out of here, as soon as I can.

Fenrys had only just finished sheathing his sword when Lise called out to him, and he looked up with a convivial smile when he gave his answer. "Oh. That? I learned that from a Paladin named Maulis many years ago. He was always afraid I would never quite get the hang of it because of my 'limited Hume capacities' and the 'innate Elvaan grace' in the technique. Of course I learned later that it was merely a sword technique that has been passed down between warriors of all kinds for centuries and that there wasn't any real Elvaan grace, he was just goading me."

When he finished he pursed his lips in silent contemplation. He'd neglected to mention in his story that Maulis was in fact, one of Fenrys' heroes, and was one of the many that died defending Jeuno on his orders. Before his silence became awkward, he smiled again and spoke "I apologize for startling everyone, but I'm fairly certain no one in the room was particularly interested in whatever tripe I get in the mail, so I thought I'd just dispose of it all. If you'll excuse me..." and with that, he turned on his heel and headed for the exit.

And then, the exit, along with the entire front of the post office, exploded.

Five minutes earlier, Blitz Magnum had been walking idly along the streets of Windurst, searching for the post office. The air was much cooler than that to which he was accustomed, and he was certainly taking his time in finding his destination. He had, after all, been given an indeterminate amount of time to finish his deliveries to Windurst and Jeuno, a luxury that none of his co-workers had ever been afforded. Today, he was wearing unassuming garments, tailored to allow him to blend in with the native Windurstians, but airy enough so that he could feel the wind against his skin. He had taken a moment to rest his yellow eyes on the movements of an unusual orange fish in a small stream, when the peaceful atmosphere was disrupted by a piercing yell.

"YOU!" the voice shouted.

Blitz payed the outburst no heed, treating it as if it were someone remembering a particular letter of the alphabet, or more likely, a yell directed at someone else. However, instead of at least glancing in the direction of the voice to verify this, the young man opted instead to scratch his beard.

God, I've gotta shave sometime soon. Blitz often thought this, and almost equally as often neglected to groom himself. However, he did not often catch fire immediately after the consideration of the purchase of a razorblade or haircut. In fact, now was the first time. It appeared that the fellow belonging to the aforementioned voice was actually angry at HIM, and wished him bodily harm. Fortunately for Blitz, his spell landed on his clothes, which he switched out for another outfit that was less flaming, and that would incite fewer jokes regarding the homosexual nature of certain clothing styles.

It is important to note that the man attacking Blitz now was not a strangely belligerent one, bent on random and fiery mayhem. Indeed, his was a focused violence, specifically on Blitz Magnum, his former student who had previously ruined a precious artifact and several buildings in the process. It took a moment for Blitz to realize the identity of his assailant, and as another spell was prepared, Blitz used the additional moment offered him to flee. And flee he did, with particular rapidity. It seemed his ex-mentor, having noticed that mere flames would not suffice, had extended his attempts on Blitz's life to explosions, charring the ground where he walked.

And so, in his flight, Blitz found his way to the front of the post office. Ironically, the man with a goal most opposing Blitz's progress (his death!) had, in a way, helped him reach his destination.

And then he blew it up.

((I was so tempted to begin this post with:

"AND THEN THINGS GOT WORSE."

... caps hold.))

Tryph had never been a very lucky young Mithra, and the events of the previous few hours stood as a monument to this fact. Of course, as the front wall of the post office imploded, Tryph's first reaction was a sharp cry and a backwards stumble that resulted in a rather intimate meeting with the desk.

Pain flared through her back briefly as a wave of heat washed over her, but she became more preoccupied with the origin of the explosion (or, more specifically, whether or not it was still around). Hurt was pushed to a later priority. Her ears still rang from the terrific sound, her senses of smell and sight were confused by the smoke, and her mind was a tangled knot.

Was whatever caused the explosion still out there? She knew she had to get out of the building, but she didn't want to run right into a crazed mage. So her best bet?

... Stay behind Fenrys, of course.

Coughing, Tryph stumbled towards the silhouette she recognised vaguely as the paladin.

((Okay!! I'm gonna attempt this!!!))

A wheel-boat began it's slow, crawling way from the docks of the west coast of The Elshimo lowlands, It's decks full of sailors tending to duties and travelers, merchants, and other people with enough money to afford a fair (and some who couldn't). One of those was a small Mandragora huddled in a corner all by herself. A seamless wooden box full of seeds sat on the deck beside her as well as a small bundle of clothes and the few precious items she owned. She peered through the boat's railings with dark, colorless eyes, sparkling with wonder and fear as the deep water rushed beneath her.

'So much water in one spot' Shanara mused to herself. Holding her items close by her side, she watched the water and the deck in her vision at the same time. So many people, everyone so tall!! She should have been scared of them, like most of her people, but she had no reason to fear them, most of them couldn't even catch her if they tried. She knew that these giants expected her kin to fear them, and were very surprised when she showed nothing but a passive curiousity towards them.

"Prideful things.. these giants.. but even a wasp has learned to take down the tarantula..." She whispered to herself with a grin. She was heading to the shores of Windurst, her seeds ready for her to start a new life in a new world. The young mandragora wondered if it would be all that different from Kazham, if she would find people like herself, or would they all be towering giants? The frail-seeming thing shuddered at the thought.

Hours passed by, and all this little, golden-skinned creature did was watch the people around her and the water pass by her. She did not watch the people out of distrust, in fact, she trusted everyone untill they proved otherwise, she was curious, so many different people, so many different cultures already, what would it be like when she came to the main continent?

That evening, she was still found on the deck, but not sleeping, she did not need sleep, she was watching the clear, starry sky. Marvelling at it's beauty and vastness undaunted by leaves or trees to block her view.

She still kept her seeds very close to her though, she would not dare loose them, they were what she would use to start her new crop in Windurst. How she would start her new life.

Whatever cry Tryph had let out, it certainly wasn't as high-pitched as what Seth had shrieked. Well, perhaps that was an exaggeration, but let us just say that Seth hadn't learned to shriek in any way that wasn't high on the pitch and feminine scale.

After being thrown to the ground by the force of the tremors that rocked the tree, along with his own instinct to hit the deck, he felt a wave of heat lick at his toes, which he promptly 'saved' by bringing up his knees to his chin, now in the fetal posistion. Smoke had filled the room, luckily, so nobody really saw Seth in this embarassing pose.

Getting up after he was convinced that there was going to be no additional explosions, Seth coughed a few times, regretting his decision. His sense of sight was near-useless in the smoke, and his eardrums rang from the explosion. His eyes watered and his nostrils were clogged with the smoke, and Seth honestly thought they were all doomed, that the world was ending.

Sadly for both of them, Seth had the same thought as Tryph; to get behind Fenris. So, on his way over to behind the paladin's barely-visible form amongst to the smoke, Seth plowed right into Tryph, knocking her onto the ground, and to make matters worse, with him atop her.

He blinked a couple of times now that they were below the smoke. Well... what a fine day this was turning out to be.

In his younger days, Fenrys would've been able to dodge the explosion entirely, but such was not the case any more, so he, like everyone else in the room, was caught virtually flatfooted when the entrance to the post office made a sudden and unexpected inward movement. However, unlike the others, he was not knocked back, for as dull as his physical reflexes had grown, his mental reflexes were still as sharp as they ever were, he found he had ample time to throw up his arm with his palm thrust forward and, once more, cast some magic.

It was hard to tell exactly what it was he shouted over the din of the explosion, but the end result was that a blue crystalline shield erupted from his hand, deflecting the scattering debris safely away from his figure. Of course, even had he had not cast the spell, it wasn't as if his plate armor had gotten any thinner in the past twenty minutes, but Fenrys rather liked his armor, and didn't feel the urge to polish it just because someone wanted to commit the offense of "mail tampering". When the explosive force subsided, Fenrys dropped his arm quickly to the hilt of his blade, drawing it in a flash of silver. He knew of very few people with the power necessary to blow a hole in the Great Tree, and he knew very well to take those people seriously.

Tryph wasn't exactly sure what had happened, as she barely had time to notice Seth before he ploughed into her. But now, in her rather awkward position on the floor, she had a moment to mul it over. It was a good thing she did, too -- in the fall, a few arrows had clattered from the quiver on her leg and she had managed to grab one in her one free hand. She nearly stabbed him out of sheer instinct.

"Y-you..." Tryph managed to wheeze, recognizing Seth through a haze of pain and tears. She dropped the arrow and began to push against his shoulders, trying to roll him off. "You! Ah... get away--!"

He was heavy enough (well, heavier enough) to keep her pinned to the ground, despite her struggles, and Tryph... well, she was put off enough by normal contact with people she knew. This was a complete stranger lying on top of her, so she, needless to say, was beginning to panic even more.

Tryph's hearing, while still muddled, was sharp enough to pick up on the sound of a blade being drawn. Had Fenrys found whoever caused the explosion? She wanted to help from afar, once she found a vantage point that wasn't on fire, but she couldn't see, or get up -- and she had never feathered anything other than animals or targets.

Seth had been too dumbfounded at his pose atop her to actually do something before she became, understandably, rather angry and frantic to get him off. "Ack! Sorry!" He apologized quickly as he scrambled off of her and then flattened himself, on his back, away from her, as if they were two opposing covers of a book.

"Liss'n." He said, getting up in a kind of crawling stance with his legs and arms spread wide in order to keep himself low to the ground. "a**'i'dent." He told her as he crawled past, towards what, he didn't know.

Before he even knew it, he was outside of the great tree and near whatever action was happening. The only thing he had realized, though, was the lack of a smoke cieling not even an inch away from his head, so he stood.

Whoever had done this was in the process of chasing someone, and, by the looks of him, was a spellcaster, and probably was the one that blew the tree up. He plowed right into Seth, and Seth groaned about this not being his day. They both got up at the same time, and the spellcaster shoved past Seth.

Seth looked over his shoulder with an unappreciative glance, and then looked down at his open palm, proud of himself.

In his hand he held an amulet, a shining, golden one with a ruby in it.

Seth did not know, however, that he had just pinched the wizard's very object of Ether-channeling.

(Hope that was okay. I figure that Blitz'll have a reason to thank Seth now xd )

A week later from when she started, the steam-boat thumped softly into the dock as sailors ran too and fro to get ropes tied down and the ship secured to the wooden pillars. Bags full of wool ran along the edge of the ship between the hull and the dock, no use in damaging the hull if all they wanted to do was land.

As soon as they were secure, a plank was set down and travelers began to disembark, almost the first one down, and nearly dancing with excitement, was the young mandragora. Her hair, a blackish color with a green tinge to it, waved out behind her as she panced down the plank with her bundle of clothes over her shoulder, and her box under one arm, a broad smile on her leathery face.

'I'm here! I'm finally here!' Shanara proclamed silently, almost dropping her things right there to dance joyously. Instead, the short woman kept her composure and headed down the dock towards the port, and the rest of the city of Windurst.

Something troubled her though, far from the docks, black smoke drifted lazily into the sky. Knowing fire and fearing it greatly, she made a mental note to ask about it later. No need to go find out now, from what she knew about fires and towns (no matter how big or small) everyone would be crowded around the scene either gawking in amazment or rushing around helping. Very easy for someone who barely came up to the waist of some of these people to get trampled.

Furrowing her brow, she headed into the city and tugged at the hem of what looked like a young man's cloak.

"Excuse me sir?" She asked in a warm, high-pitched, silvery voice. "Can you direct me to the cities gates?"

Blitz desperately tried to recall the ether barrier spell he'd learned years ago, as his teacher approached him. He was a little less than prepared to do this, though, with imminent death looming over him. Blitz was frozen in place, not by fear, but by confusion. He could've sworn that his previous master was a Tarutaru, but definitely recognized this man as the one who had taught him. Further, his confusion was detracting from his ability to recall the spell, and he was losing precious seconds as his master fizzled the next fireball.

Wait, fizzled? This wasn't a wizard-in-training, destined by vague prophecies to save the world with mangled Latin and questionable logic. This was a master of nearly every legalized form of ether manipulation available. He didn't fizzle spells, except for now, of course. This was obviously equally confusing for both parties, but Blitz took the opportunity to steal away to a corner and change his clothes into something more concealing. Covering himself in heavy brown robes, with everything but the lower half of his face conealed, it was very unlikely that his master, who was now frantically searching his person for something, would not notice him.
