Looking up from the notes, the British lad found himself being asked a question. Glazed over emerald orbs eyed the object that Micajah was so meticulously working on. Blinking a little, he tilted his head trying to truly focus on it instead of simply looking. A gaze would not be sufficient enough to answer the question at hand. Prepared looks and failed guesses would not do here. He had to pull himself out of the trance that he had gotten lost in.
"Hm," he began as he tilted his head to the other side, "It's rather colorful. Very well made too, especially for something you just did right now. It's obvious that there was quite a bit of craftsmanship put into it..." That was the technical answer, but he figured that wouldn't be sufficient enough for the other, who so detested his obviously 'holier than thou' comments. Note sarcasm.
"I like the way it came out, it suits you." And with that, Nathaniel attempted a small smile. It was a little awkward, but well placed and meaningful. Not so much fake as it was nervous, as if he'd never really smiled at anyone. And this was true. He only smiled with Jaden or when he was cooking. Those kinds of expressions just never seemed to suit him. Not now, nor ever. Very unlike the hat that would fit Micajah so well.

Micajah slipped the hat on his head and noticed that it slid down just a little, which would be fine so he could tuck his hair into the empty space should he want to, and for a few moments he tilted his head back and forth to see how much it moved when he did so. It moved only in the slightest, not enough that it would fall off or blow off with a breeze, so he was satisfied.
"For some reason I think I'll believe you when you say that. You're a little rough on honesty it seems, but when you're complimenting someone I think you're actually telling the truth. It's harder to lie when you're doing that, and manners don't have anything to do with anything from that standpoint."
He pulled the hat from his head and soothed down his hair, since it stood up from the sudden introduction and departure of a cap, turning his head towards Nathaniel one last time.
"You should try to be that way all the time when you talk, it makes you seem more human and friendlier. You should try to smile like that more too."
Micajah gave off his own little smile, one that was real and not a catty grin.

Nathaniel spent a moment watching the other fidget with his hat before turning back to his notes. He was nearly finished by this point and had every intention of pulling himself out of Micajah's way very shortly. This of course, was until the other continued speaking to him. Naturally, he would have to pay attention, but he frowned a little, closing his notebook and deciding that he was done with it for now. It was useless to try and work while also trying to hold a conversation. He was not yet confident enough with the latter to attempt the former simultaneously.
Strangely though, Nathaniel thought he was quite honest and not 'rough' about it at all. He said what needed to be said, or didn't say what he didn't care about (which was nearly everything not concerning himself.) He let the other speak though, for he could not formulate words quite yet. Nathaniel only 'lied' to protect himself, and he didn't see it quite as such. Was that what other people saw? Ah well.
His face turned almost thoughtful, looking at Micajah's smile. A truer one. It made him nod, and smile again, less nervously but still very very small and not notable. The British youth raised an eyebrow, "I am human... I simply try to uphold my manners." However he felt a bit of deja vu with this conversation and stopped it there, shrugging slightly, "If you think so, though I'm not sure I know what you mean about the way I talk..." Nathaniel tilted his head to the side innocently, not quite sure if he wasn't friendly, or if he could smile a lot, or if he had even just changed his speech pattern.... if only for a moment. He hadn't noticed it. But apparently Aja had, and that was somewhat significant in it's own right. Hm...

"Don't worry about it then, sometimes these things take time. While I want you to try harder I also don't want you to do things that make you look and feel awkward, you know?"
Micajah slowly rose to his feet as he spoke, indicating it was now time for him to leave or at that he at least was wanting to go now that he'd finished the project he was working on. His legs were a little stiff from sitting as he head been and his fingers smarted when he rubbed his hands together, from being so much by the needles, though he was clearly pleased with himself for doing something.
"You should keep being you, but try something new each day. Maybe instead of just saying hello to someone, why not try to smile too as you speak? Shaking hands works, but that's a basic reaction to things, while a smile can sometimes seem out of place. It can take people aback, or it can invite them in towards you more. Human emotion can be expressed far better with your actions than your words, and since we're still young we need to get as much interaction as we can."
With that he dusted the back of his pants off and offered a hand down to the other, lifting him up as well, and he adjusted the cap on his head one last time as he put it back on.
"I've got to go now, it was not my intention to sit out here and do this for as long as I did, so I'll see you around okay? You take care of yourself and remember - smile."
The teen quickly gathered his things and hoisted then up on his shoulder, waving before he took off back towards the dorms.
