Ruque's eyes shone proudly as Niyana praised him, and he nodded eagerly at her suggestions.
"We'll make good food!" he said enthusiastically, jumping down from the table. He fell to his knees, but was up in an instant, brushing them off and running off towards the basin they used for water. He washed his hands, scrubbing them together and humming happily, then dried them on a towel and ran for the sugar.
"What kind of sauce are we going to make?" he asked, holding up the sack for Niyana to place on the table, since he couldn't reach.

Niyana picked up the sag and placed it on the table then went back to chopping. "Well it is going to be a simple sugar or sweet sauce. We just mix sugar with water and boil it then pour it over the fruit." She smiled, "So it is very easy."
"But lets see now...we don't know what the meat will be like to we have to make a light rub for it because if it is fish we do not want to over power it. But if it is venison we want it to be flavorful."

Ruque climbed back up onto the table and sat down, looking at Niyana wide-eyed.
"Should we wait for Papa to get back then before we make it?" he asked her curiously. "That way we know which one we should make, right? And we don't have to waste anything?"

Niyana nods, "Well we could do that or we can make a light rub...but right now we need to mix the sugar with the water....it should be three cups of water to 2 cups sugar...and we mix it well before putting it near the fire...do you think you can scoop the water and sugar or would you like to mix the fruit together?"

Ruque looked at the sugar, then at the fruit, and then he looked up at Niyana and blushed deeply.
"I think maybe you better pour the water and the sugar," he said softly, shuffling his feet awkwardly and looking at the table he was standing on. "The cup's nearly as big as me, I don't think I could carry it full of water."
And he turned around and looked over the edge of the bowl that the fruit was in, wondering if he was even big enough to mix it.

Niyana saw her son's worry and laughed warmly. She pulled a large book over and smiled, "You can stand on this and..." she pulled out a tall wooden spoon. "stir with this, just take it nice and slow." She moved to poor the water into a small bowl after helping her son up. Stirring would help strengthen his arms but he would just see it as helping her and not working.

Ruque's eyes filled with gratefulness and relief when Niyana offered him the book, and he smiled up at her warmly, his blush fading.
"Thank you, Mama," he said brightly, taking the spoon from her. It was taller than he was! But at least it wasn't heavy. He was sure he could stir the fruit with this!
With a giggle, he climbed up onto the book and put the spoon into the bowl and began to stir. It was harder than he thought it would be, but he put all of his weight into it (even though he didn't have much to put into it) and slowly but surely the fruit began to mix.
"Am I doing good, Mama?" he asked, smiling brightly.

Niyana looked up from her pouring of the sugar and smiled, "Your doing great Ruque."
She leaned over and turned the bowl so he could get the other side, "Just keep stirring just like that and I will start the syrup heating and we should hopefully have it ready before your father returns so it can cool and I guess we can go over the first aid kit better."

Ruque smiled proudly and continued his stirring.
"I think it's good that you're teaching me about the first aid kit," he said seriously. "Because I get hurt a lot, and Ruran and Kanis and Aras might get hurt a lot when they're fighting, and this way I can take care of them and make them get better."
He smiled up at her. "And I can feed them too when they can't make food for themselves!"

Niyana nods, "Yup you will be able to make them good food, not just food for them to survive on. And i can tell that you are going to become a great healer...you have a very good knack for it. I am sure if I just told you the name of an item and maybe what it is used for you could find it in the kit without even knowing it."
She beamed at Ruque proudly, "And I am sure we will all be amazed with your food when you get older, maybe you will even beat me in the cooking field and you can be the head chief of the house!"
She was not trying to pressure her son but encourage him.

Ruque flushed again, but this time it was with pride and excitement rather than embarrassment. Did his mother really think that he could do all of those things? It sounded so wonderful!
"Do you really think so?" he asked her, his eyes shining brightly. "It's nice to know that I might be good at something - because the others are all good at lots of things!"
Well the only thing he could think of that Ruran was good at was being grumpy, but still he was amazing at it, so that counted for a lot. Even if it wasn't in a good way.

Niyana nods, "Yes I do think so and I also think your good in lots of other things as well. I think if you would have raced your sister's you may have beaten them. Your pretty fast too."
She knelt down to put the suryp near the fire and heat it a bit to reduce it. She held her hand up for him, "You can stop stirring for now...if you can bring the first aid kit down here and we will figure out what is in side."

Ruque blushed brightly at Niyana's compliments, his eyes shining brightly. He didn't know what to say - so he didn't say anything. He simply set the spoon to the side and hopped off the book, then picked up the first aid bag and slung it over his shoulder like a pack.
"It's kind of heavy," he commented, heaving it until he had it in such a position that it was easier to carry. He jumped off the edge of the table, and this time the bag's weight behind him helped him not to fall over as he landed, and he made his way quickly over to Niyana.
"Here you go, Mama," he smiled, holding the bag up to her.

Niyana could tell he was already growing older as he refused to climb into her hand a third time. She felt the small hurt of a mother whose child was growing up to fast. She laughed and nods, "It has to be heavy it has much inside of it...and the first thing we need to remember is always refill our kits after using them as soon as we can that way we will always be prepared for anything we have to fix."
She nods, "I will show you how to make the cleaning pads later tonight but for now lets see how much you can figure out?" She looked thoughtful, "Try to find the tweezers they are used to pick things out of wounds or to help hold the skin when stitching it."

Ruque sat next to Niyana and opened the bag.
"Tweezers," he repeated, sticking his head inside and looking around. "For taking out ... like splinters, right?"
He looked around until he found a tong-like device with point on the end. That would work ... the points went together nicely and were small enough that they could reach where fingers couldn't. He picked it up and held it out to show Niyana. "This?"
