Thank you for your in-depth response, I'll definitely refer to this in the future when creating profiles, as I'm always at a loss. And I'll try that writing exercise, it sounds like fun. ^^

Nah, I love reading. Part of why I got into RPing in the first place. In fact, I've been reading the threads in the Memorable forum. ^^

Wow Sarcasm, that was a truly impressive concrit post! XD

I'm always open to hearing constructive criticism at any time, but I'm afraid I'm not very good at giving it, at least as far as writing is concerned. But if you ask me, I'll do my best for you biggrin

D;

I forgot his fears!!

I'm sure I can think of something for Michel, though...
PostPosted: Sun Aug 03, 2008 12:12 pm

Oh. MY. MERLIN.
Just reading what's here is frustrating me, because I forgot one major thing in my profile. I forgot to add fears, flaws, etc. I almost added one, but I thought it was a fear that was too random, so I cut out that entire thing at the time and planned to go back and add them in later. Flaws and fears. Damn it.

Well, ignoring my sudden annoyance, I might have some good tips for both roleplaying and for building a character.

First off, details. When most people and building a character, they write things that they think are necessary, but they don't normally add facts about their character unless they think the facts are interesting or fit in with the topic. But don't be afraid to add as many facts about them as you can think of. Flaws and otherwise. The more facts, the more 3-d your character will appear.

Is your character a morning person? A night person? Do they have any major fears or a weaknesses? Are they paranoid? What's their favorite color? Boxers or Briefs? White or black? Whats their dream? What do they want to be when they grow up? Are they more interested in long term or short term ideas? What is their wand? Do they prefer sweet or salty? Are they a cat person, or a dog person?

Secondly, when you build a character, don't just build one character. Your character has a family, right? People who raised them? Friends? When you create your character, create several characters. Don't just tell us that they were raised by their aunt and uncle, who were obsessed with grades, or who hated magic. Tell us about that aunt and uncle. How old are they? What are their names? Their jobs? What's their blood? What do they believe in? Were they nice or strict? What do they do in their free time? Do they have any strong supports? What school did they go to? What house, if any, were they in? What house did they hope their children would get into, if any? Think about as many facts for the people in your character's profile as your character itself.

When building a character, be as realistic as possible. Your first year isn't going to be able to do potion mastery work. If they can, you'd better have a nice, detailed background explaining why. Was their father a potions master who taught them, maybe?

Also, keep things from the book in mind. If your character is someone who's had a nice life, who's never had anything bad happen to them, and who's just a little bit pissed off at someone, they won't be able to use the unforgivables, because you have to WANT to use them. If they just want to hurt that person in a fit of anger, they won't be able to use crucio. Remember Harry, who was unable to crucio Bellatrix even though he hated her with a passion and wanted her to suffer for killing Sirius. He couldn't do it, because his personality wasn't the personality of someone who honestly wants people to suffer, he just wanted her to suffer at that time.

Lastly, when building a character, don't just sit there and work on it. Look around at other profiles, because maybe they'll give you an idea for a fact. Look at a mary sue limitus test, maybe, and at what makes a bad character. While using too many of those facts makes you a mary sue, using some isn't bad, if you can back them up. Also, you can use that test to decide facts not to do, as well.

Actually, I do have one, last idea. Use an online spell check, or even your word program. If you're using a word that isn't normal, like a spell name, google that spelling. If you got it wrong, google will still show you the right spelling. Remember folks: We may be able to read it if you spell it wrong, but people are more likely to roleplay with you if you at least try to spell it right.

I've been seeing a lot of posts that are almost exclusively just about the roleplayer's character, and they don't interact, much less even mention other characters in the vicinity.

I think interacting or at least mentioning other characters helps move the rp along. Just talking about your own character is kind of boring.

For example:

The wizard entered the bar, clutching his cloak close to himself. Looking around, he slunk into a dark corner and sat there alone, occasionally glancing around himself. He slipped a book out of his pocket, and began to read, taking in the words on the pages as his eyes slipped quickly over them.

versus

The wizard entered the bar, clutching his cloak close to himself. Looking around, he met the eyes of the owner of the business who was standing behind the bar, pausing for a moment to nod his head in greeting, before continuing to a dark corner. He sat there alone, occasionally glancing around himself. Several witches and wizards were watching him, and, even though his mouth was constantly in a grimace, he lifted the corners of his lips up to give them what could almost be considered a smile. He slipped a book out of his pocket, and began to read, taking in the words on the pages as his eyes slipped quickly over them.

I dunno, this was just something I noticed.

Something that should always be done:
-REMEMBER TO PROOFREAD-
Even after you post, re-read it. That's why there's the edit button. c:

If you have spelling issues, type out your post in Microsoft Word (or whatever you use) first and run spell check.
And hey, Firefox is so nifty it underlines misspelled words for you automatically.

Also, watch which versions of "your" and "there" you are using. >_>
"Your" vs. "you're" and "there" vs. "their" vs. "they're".
This is a literate role play after all.

I'd like to clarify what is considered godmoding:

-Playing other people's characters. Whether it be their actions, reactions, thoughts or words. Just don't do it.
-Playing staff. You can state absently that a professor gave your RPC a pointed look to quiet them down. But that is it. No controlling what punishments, compliments or rewards the professors give out. No stating that they said something they didn't.
-Declaring the outcome of a situation without giving others the chance or time to react
-Giving your character a position or title thay don't have. Your character cannot be on the Quidditch team or a Perfect without permission from a mod. They cannot say they are 'the best dueler in the school,' without having proven it. They cannot say that everyone finds them irresistably handsome, because I doubt that.
-Having knowledge beyond the norm. Like knowing what someone else's character is thinking, feeling, going to do or going to say. Sure they can assume things, but even then, they wont be completely correct every bloody time.

Those are just some Godmoding styles. I'm sure there are more, but these ones occurr the most.

Oh my gosh, I love having firefox. If I didn't have the spell checker, my posts would look really bad. Sometimes when I go back and reread it I still see some serious grammar mistakes and immediately fix them.
I feel so bad afterwords though.

Godmolding. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. NO one wants to deal with a character that is perfect, and flaws makes them more interesting.

Too bad Firefox doesn't check for grammar too, huh?

Mmm, godmodding is the devil. I'm in a very casual Kingdom Hearts role play and fighting happens a lot. The way we do it is player 1 will just aim a punch at player 2 and then player 2 will decide whether or not the punch lands. It works just fine as long as everyone knows their character's limitations and are mature.

I have the habit of creating one character that is a total mary-sue.
-coughASCELLAcough-

And a character that totally gets mad at said mary-sue.
-coughRAINAcough-

So I get one character, that in a fight, would totally pretend to get hit and loose. While the other would think they could win. They balance each other out.

Right?

Um, no, I don't think they do. >_>
Why would you make a Mary-Sue when clearly their kind is hated and not allowed in this RP?
PostPosted: Sat Aug 16, 2008 3:02 pm

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with Fiendfyre on this one. It is stated explicity in the guild rules that "Mary-Sue" characters are not allowed. >___>

Well, she's not completely Mary-sue, but she resembles qualities. At least I think so. maybe I'm just being pretentious.
Oh well. Anyways, I think you got what I was saying.
