Sorry for this, but I've always felt bass was basically the instrument for guitarists with too little skill to actually play guitar in a band.
*ducks and covers head*
Some of the run-of-the-mill bassists who play one note at a time, may be failed guitarists, but to be a good bassist takes just as much time and practice as a guitar.
And not only that but the bassist is the key person in a band usually. If the bassist screws up usually it throws the drummer off and then everyone else...or at least thats how its work in any band I've been in.
3nodding Yeah, it's the "run-of-the-mill" type I've mostly encountered... seems like every bassist I've met is the guy who was 3rd best guitarist in the band, and got demoted.
I'm not saying this is always the case, just that it has been my typical experience.
