Xi's summed up the first part of what I told you in PMs. And although Kenshin said to go ahead and debate here, I would recommend we keep that little disagreement in PMs. No sense bogging down the thread with what borders on personal attacks.

Although ... after I do a bit of research, so I'm certain I know whereof I speak ... it might be interesting to have a "why these books?" thread. Let me work on that ... after I finish this stack of books I was handed last night, that is. sweatdrop Gotta return 'em by next Wednesday, and I've not started yet. Busy day.

And thus ... back to the movies. *Tries to think of one.* Um ... to be honest, I almost never watch religion-based movies. Movies are my fantasy, not my reality.

I think I'm kinda the same way Dragonbait, which is kinda why I started the thread. Someone at church mentioned that back when Hollywood was starting up, Christians poopooed it as evil... regardless of the fact that it could have been used to further His kingdom... and so what is Hollywood today? Its just pushed the line further and further, because nothing is really holding it back.

Kenshin, be fair. Whenever anything has started in the past millenia, people have called it evil, even when it had potential for good -- no, especially when it had potential for good. And being called "evil" so early on, I'm convinced, has directed so many things down the "evil" path -- or at least the "usually used for evil" path. RPGs, video games, pop music, the Internet, television, radio, movies, nuclear energy, Manifest Destiny, mass media, higher education, the American Revolution, coffee, the Protestant Reformation, the printing press -- need I continue?

Okay, Christian movies (I'll omit the "good", because that's relative). Um, a couple of the In Search Of ... films might count, but those are old even by my standards. I can't think of ...

*Thunk!* Oy. Has anybody considered The Ten Commandments? I can't believe we overlooked that one. It's older, definitely older, but still valid.

And there's Ben-Hur, I suppose. My father would definitely argue for Ben-Hur, but to me that's more a normal movie in a Biblical setting, like ... well, like Life of Brian.

Hah, you have a point Dragoinbait... but Hollywood did have allot of potential to be used for good...

I have no problem with older movies, I added an extra section just for them... =p

*quickly does a google for "In Search of ..." then an IMDB search for "In Search of ..."* hmm... looks like there are allot of people searching for things... >_>;; could you be more specific Dragonbait?

Posting the other two though, as well as yours Knuckles... looks like there was a 1907 Ben-Hur as well as a 1959 one, and a TV show that came out in 2003... I guess I'll post the '59 one?

"In Search Of ... " was a documentary TV series in the mid- to late-70's hosted by Leonard Nimoy (yes, Spock) focusing on the ... strange and unusual: ancient astronauts, the Kennedy conspiracies, Amelia Earhart, Atlantis, and so forth.

The TV show was interesting enough (well, if you're into that sort of thing, which I always have been), but there were two ... eh, not exactly spin-offs, but I don't think they were actually part of the show, in spite of following the same format. At any rate, there were at least two movies: In Search Of Noah's Ark, and In Search Of Historic Jesus; I have the book that accompanies Ark (can't really call it a novelization), and I saw Jesus in theatres around '82 with my Sunday School class.

Ark had the same producer as the show (Alan Landsburg), so I'm assuming it's part of the overall series. I've also seen In Search Of Historic Jesus in video stores ... granted, not recently, but I do know it had a home video release.

By the way ... User Image This is Wikipe-tan. Wikipe-tan is our friend.

And yes, I do recommend the '59 version of Ben-Hur. It's the most famous, at any rate, and thus the most likely version for people to find. I didn't even know about the TV show, I admit.

there this movie called Six the mark unleashed came out in 2005 0r 2006 and be careful becuase as far as reveltions goes it doesnt bring about everything in revelations and Jesus said to not add or take away for that specific book if oyou add to it God will put his wrath on you and to take it away Jesus says that God will take your palce from the book of life. I enjoyed this movie but its not revelations based it soesnt explain the mark of the beast and alot of atuff it leaves out but check it out though like i said be careful on believing how revelations goes down just read revelations for what it says and believe it .May God bless you all and Jesus Christ save you.

I'm guessing you're talking about this movie knuckles... The Emissary: A Biblical Epic
and not this one... The Emissary

As for the other one, I think you'd have to look at the reasoning behind cutting out things... is it in order to make it more accessible to a larger audience? or was it because of time reasons? In either case I suppose it is still removing from the book... maybe Dragonbait has a better answer... ?

No promises, Kenshin, but I'll do what I can.

*Sigh.* This sounds like a conversation topic repeated between the three of us every time there's a super-hero movie. Meadow asks why such-and-such a character didn't appear in the movie, BlckRobe yells at her for asking the same question over and over and over ad infinitum et nauseam, I separate them and try (unsuccessfully) to explain to her (again) that with 45 years of history (to pick on the X-Men), it'd be impossible to squeeze in everybody without turning the movie into a four-hour slideshow.

Since that probably doesn't make sense to some people here, I'll explain. Every word written in the Bible is important. But movies, regardless of how faithful they may be to the original material, are not the Bible. Frankly, as long as you keep enough of the original to make it recognizable, I personally wouldn't complain about things being left out in movies.

No movie based on a pre-existing medium (usually a book) is an exact duplicate of the original. Are there time cuts? Yes. Are there cuts to make something accessible to a larger audience? Yes. Are there things that are important, but would quickly drive most audiences into the street because they're boring? Yes. Are there events that just plain don't make sense to people? Yes. And my personal favorite, are there events which probably didn't happen the way we think they did? Yes.

And is any of these a bad thing? No, not generally. Oh, don't misunderstand; if you were to tell the story of Jesus, but leave out the resurrection, you'd be leaving out probably the most important part. But it might be safe to skip over Him cursing the fig tree; with no disrespect intended to the Lord or His word, that's a (by human standards) lesser part of the overall story. Heck, how many people reading this post aren't sure what I'm talking about? If you don't know about Jesus and the fig tree, my point is proven.

There's two ways to view a Biblical movie, in my opinion. For Christians, it's a retelling, a dramatization, but not a complete replay of the original. For non-Christians, it's a sampler, something to whet their appetites and make them want more.

To swap metaphors for a moment, you don't throw the entire menu into the "appetizer" section. Make sense, folks?

==========

When I first saw that title, I thought of the pilot for DS9. Yes, we know how my brain works, when it works. I admit, I hadn't heard of the Paul movie (at least, I don't recall hearing of it), but if it qualifies, great.

Knuckles, there's no need to double-post. In fact, we discourage that. It's just one step up from spamming.

I'd if I was you would rather read about her in the book of Esther from the Bible you KNow how movies can be and well The bible is great to read Iv'e read the whole thing And it's my favorite book. Not to refer the bible with a mere book but I love the bible.May God bless you all.User ImageUser Image

The only one I know of that hasn't been said is for kids. I have a friend who works at a Christian school and loves veggie tales. I'm not that crazy about them because they make me hungry and then I want to eat them so I focus on my appetite and not the movie or show, but I've heard a lot of good things about it if younger folks want to watch a movie.

If it makes you feel any better, I thought of the DS9 pilot too. But that's pretty much a given.

Lyme, I'm sorry, but the subject was "good Christian movies", not "Christian movies that make us want to break the sixth commandment". xp But you get an A for effort.

eek ... you want to eat them?
