Jace staggered to her feet; grimly, she took Irelia's hand, still panting, and they hurried down the rest of the stairs. The door through to the main room stuck like all the others did; they could hear Jonathon, creaking down the steps behind them, when the door unstuck and they tumbled through to the map room. Map room; something screamed far off --

She didn't want to stick around to see what the hell was screaming. If anything. It sounded like it had come from below, in the basements maybe, down the spiral staircase they had left. She ran like a bat out of hell with Irelia behind her, bursting out the doorway, into the atrium, down past the gate and out of the asylum entirely; slipped-ran down the steps until they were at the river and she waded in up to her calves, still panting, wiping the sweat from her brow.

"They can't cross the river," she gasped, "not ghosts, he probably can't -- probably can't leave that damn place, anyway -- "

Oh god, they were out. The sun was shining. She was still terrified and angry that she was terrified, heart pounding, but God.

As they broke in to the sunlight Irelia winced, her eyes adjusting to the usual brightness of day, not the pseudo-night that had taken over the asylum. Water splashing at her thighs, Irelia gasped for breath and finally felt her tie to the ghost fade away.

"He's-- Not--Dead," Irelia gasped, even more winded than Jace, "I-- made him alive. Didn't-- know---what I was--doing." Irelia had sort of figured out what she had done half way though the screaming horror that they had just gone through.

Regaining her breath, Irelia felt like collapsing, her mind and body strained beyond all reason. Staggering over to the bank opposite the asylum, Irelia slumped on to the beach, sand clinging to her wet tights and skirt.

"I'm sorry Jace," Irelia said quietly. It was all her fault.

Jace doggedly crossed after her, carefully, eventually collapsing down next to Irelia on her back and holding her sides. They still hurt. After a little while she sat up, shoulder to shoulder next to her friend.

"Shut up, retard," she said lowly. "It was my idea to go in there. You wanted to go back. You were the one who -- got possessed by that weird-a** book, and the walls. That was goddamn freaky, Rel."

So he was still in there. Because of them; because of both of them.

The book. How could she have forgotten about the book. Her book, the one she had always had since childhood, had only ever served to help her focus her innate talents. This was the first time that it had actually done something on its own, but Irelia had been expecting it for a long while. She had a pretty good idea Aher had too.

Reaching in to her backpack, Irelia retrieved the book, knowing that it had somehow found its way there though she hadn't the time to put it there herself.

"This goddamn book! It almost got us killed!" Irelia heaved the book in to the rived, and watched it glug under the surface. Next thing she knew, it was back in her hands and only slightly ********." Irelia said quietly, and placed the book beside her.

"I... I don't think the book possessed me," Irelia murmured honestly, "I'm pretty sure I did that. It just... helped. And wouldn't let me stop."

Picking up a rock, she threw it angrily in to the river, happy that it sank like the stone it was and not an enchanted ********. I'm a demon after all."

This was answered by a fairly sharp punch to her shoulder, whereupon Jace grabbed it and shook her a little, insistently; "Shut up," Jace said, with heavy-lidded orange eyes and gritted teeth, "just shut your stupid face up; you're not a demon, ghosts just -- ghosts are a goddamn fact, chica. Okay? Okay."

Awkwardly, she ducked her head near Irelia's and placed a kiss on her cheekbone, light and swift. "So stop being a robotard. That ghost was always gonna be there; it was just an accident, that's all, your messed-up power s**t that I don't wanna know about. What's important is that we got out, away from that thing."

Jace looked up at the hill and the stark white of Winchester Insane Asylum, and she said darkly:

"We're just gonna have to remember it's there."
