"It matters because I never said that."

He was starting to remember things, seemingly small and inconsequential things that he hadn't paid attention to at first. They were things like looks he remembered seeing from Mapiya's father... a harsh word here and there when he felt they weren't merited. Did Caelin believe that he would have broken his integrity and lied about his daughter's feelings? If so, why would he do such a thing?

Did it make any more sense than Mapiya lying to him herself?

"Either you, myself, or your father is a liar from amongst us and I know that I am not. If... if you aren't the liar, why would your father have done this to both of us?" He was less angry but no more friendly than when he had first seen her. He had spent a long time convinced of her guilt in this... and it was a hard conception to let go of.

The words had barley left his muzzle when she gave a low moan of pain, golden eyes closing. It made sense...too much sense given things that had happened after his disapperance.

"Because....we were his.....oh Cae..."

All the pain and heartache of betrayl were real...only their source was a lie. The little filly inside her wanted to cry out that their daddy would never, ever do something like that but the mare knew it had to be true.

"When...after....." She sighed not knowing how to start, " Once you were gone, the other yearling colts began to leave. I really was in no condition to notice but Rith meantioned it." Once meantion of her twin would never have slipped her lips, but in the face of this pain...it seemed rather trivial.

His heart beat was a dull thud in his ears. It made sense in a way that Mapiya persistently lying about the event did not. After all this time he finally had the truth... but it didn't make him any happier. "I see," was all he said then.

He turned his face away and his expression closed off. He tried and failed to think of what else he could say to that. Mapiya was innocent of this. It seemed like she had even loved him once, though he didn't know what she felt now. He didn't know what he felt either. He couldn't decide what emotion it was he was experiencing but it reminded him of the time he had been running to close to the edge of a ravine in the rain. The ground crumbled into mud beneath his hooves and had sent him falling towards the river below. He remembered seeing his hooves beneath him flailing for the ground that had left him behind.

Where would he land this time?

"Thank you for telling me," he finally added.

She couldn't see him through the tears that choked her. She had long thought that her father hadn't approved of her young suitor but to know he had done this.....

"I..uh..I should go...I..." She had to get away from him before she broke down. God to know all her life had been a lie. "I swear to you Cae I didn't know..."

"Neither of us knew. If we did... things would be different, wouldn't they?"

He tried to bring up the memories of how he had felt with her when everything had been bright and new but it was hard to find anything untainted by his bitterness. Knowing the truth couldn't strip all that away in an instant. It maybe couldn't strip it away ever. He would never be able to love her as fully and innocently as he had the first time. Her father had taken away that chance for both of them.

Still, he hated to see her cry.

"Stop crying." He reached forward to give her neck a soft nudge. "It won't change anything now. What's done is done." His words of comfort felt empty as he said them. The past couldn't be undone, no, but that didn't make it powerless.

Mapiya's breath caught in her throat when he nudged her gently. It was nothing short of amazing he was willing to touch her at all. Perhaps that was the sadest thought of all, that it was so amazing that the first love of her life could show her the smallest kindness.

Her golden eyes were sad adn haunted as she gave him a very faint smile. "I don't expect kindness from you Caelin, I don't deserve it. I knew what my father was, and what he was capable of, I should have known better but I still feel for his lies. " She shook her head then looking away.

"It's pointless to be upset over it. That's all I meant." His voice came out rough and tense. He was trying to be calm, trying to act calm...

"There's just no point."

He turned his head away and looked to the sky, searching. He couldn't see the eagle and the wind wasn't blowing. He kept looking there, searching for comforts in the blue and swirls of white but today comfort eluded him. Each breath was a wave washing away his distant indifference and bringing with it pain.

How could it be that this had happened?

She shuddered faintly sighing "I..I should go. " Her smile was pathetic and fake but she had to try. "It...it was good to see you again Caelin..."

That time, turning away from him was the hardest thing she had ever done but the sun had long since risen and Adour would be looking for her. She nickered faintly as she headed back to her home.

"Wait!" The shout was out of him before Caelin had time to stop it and with it came another wave of emotion.

"Just please... wait," he said quieter. "It's been so long..." His mind raced. What was he saying? He couldn't let go of the past, he knew that. Emotions had been tainted. If that was true, why was he having such a hard time letting her go? Instead of the sky he was looking at Mapiya, she who was more blue by far. She had already tried to leave several times in their conversation and Caelin wondered if she'd keep going this time.

Her heart lept in her chest as she turned her head back to him. She had no desire to walk away from him but it was so hard and hurt so much...

It had been so long...Her smile was gentle and more like the one he remembered when he had use to come running up to her breathless with excitement. It had been attractive on a filly, it was devistating on the grown mare.

"I live with a new herd now. You are welcome to come join us so we can talk more. I must get back though, my foster daughter will be waking up soon and will panic to find me gone. Her father is a dear friend and left her in my care." She wasn't sure why she was rambling so but she couldn't seem to shut up!

It took a moment for Caelin to realize that Mapiya was speaking. When she turned to him and smiled it was as if he had been transported back to their time together when they were both still so young and unhurt. He tuned back in to realize that she was inviting him to come with her. That and... she was taking care of a filly? Had he heard her correctly?

"I'll come and meet your herd," he said neutrally, not wanting to betray any misgivings that he might have. Even if she might still have a place in his heart that didn't mean that he had a place in her herd. He knew now only too well what happened to those that weren't welcome.

Mapiya's smile brightened as he came to her side. It was if they were young again and both knew where they belonged..with each other but real life intrudded again as they emerged from the bushes near her home.

A young pink and black sparkely usdia stallion was teaming up with a black she wolf as they chased rabbits about the clearing. An older black usdia with a red, white, and blue mane and tail watched with faintly disapproving before turning a suspicious eye on Caelin. A oddly dressed creamy stallion was looking about frantic and upon seeing them bolted over"
Piya! Piya!! Adour is threatening me agian!!"He sounded like a scared child even though he was obviously a full grown stallion

Mapiya heaved a sigh as she shook her head amused, " Momi she is less than a year old why do you let her bully you?"

"Cause she is scarey!

"MOMMA!!!"

Momi winced and somehow ended up hidding behind Caelin as the young obviously part kalona filly bolted up to Mapiya to nuzzle her, demanding to know why she had left her alone. Mapiya just laughed nipping her shoulder lightly. " Hush now pet." the filly subsided with a glare at the strange stallion.

Caelin's head jerked back and his ears shot upright when he saw the filly run to Mapiya. "Kalona!" He spat the word out and his head jerked towards Mapiya in shock. "Why do you have a kalona filly here?"

Out of all the surprises and shocks of the day this one was almost more than Caelin could swallow. He was still coming to terms with the idea that Mapiya might not have betrayed him after all... but now she was associating with kalonas? Caelin had been lucky enough to never have been severely damaged by one but had been chased out of their territories enough to have both a great respect and dislike for their race. Belatedly he wondered whether he should have been more subtle but not quickly enough to recall the words already said.

She reacted before she though, immedatly putting herself between 'her' foal and a perviced threat her ears pinned flat back, teeth bared. When her brain caught up with her actions she hesitated, ear ears coming back up, but she still kept the bulk of her body between them.

"I told you. She is my foster daughter, her father is my best friend. He is a good man who couldn't help his heritage. I love them both dearly."

The little filly peered at him rather in shock. Never had she seen her 'momma' react violently to anything, but then again she had never heard such harshness directed at her. Everyone loved her...they had to...didn't they?

Caelin forced himself to calm, forced himself not to react suddenly and without thinking. What he wanted to do was shout at Mapiya for her foolishness. She thought that the kalona foal she loved wouldn't hesitate to bite her throat out some day? Snakes were snakes even if they were raised by rabbits. He was about to say some version of this when he noticed the tail on the filly. It wasn't a serpentine kalona tail like he had first thought but a tufted unicorn one. He looked at it for a moment longer before turning back to Mapiya in frustration.

"All right. I agree with you. They can't help being what they are.... but you should have warned me."

Just because the filly had unicorn blood in her didn't mean it'd be able to overpower the kalona heritage but it at least meant she had a chance at it. A chance and kalona wings. The chance made her lucky even as the wings made her hard for Caelin to trust.
